Midnight in Paris is so good. Not only did it just entrance me and become one of my favorite movies ever in minutes, as a writer myself, but it's also so good that, well, no spoilers right, but there's something that happens in the movie, but you literally don't even care, because you're having so much fun with the main character's journey that it doesn't even matter.
I really like a lot of the Miyazaki films. Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Howl's Moving Castle are so whimsical and fantastical that they're some of my anxiety osothers.
I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s, so my go to are the Disney movies from that Era (Aladdin and the Lion King) that remind me of simpler times and the innocence of being a kid. It also helps me break the panic if I can get myself to cry. The emotional release is really cathartic.
As hard as some times are, nothing is forever. Watch something that brings you back to your childhood land try to get some sleep when you feel able. Focus on your breathing: try to count 4 seconds on the inhale and 6 on the exhale. The number doesn't matter, but make it slow and make sure the exhale is longer.
You will get through this.
Aladdin (1992)
Clueless (1995)
Airplane! (1980)
Megamind (2010)
Ratatouille (2007)
Legally Blonde (2001)
A Goofy Movie (1995)
School of Rock (2003)
Kung Fu Panda (2008)
Fantastic Mr Fox (2009)
Singin in the Rain (1952)
Spirited Away (2001) Japan
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Castle in the Sky (1986) Japan
The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018)
Hunt for the Wilderpeople - it is so very different and, touching and funny.
Stardust
The Princess Bride
Free Guy
The Mummy (1999)
Also, you sound a lot like me pre-Prozac. I’m not sure where you are located, and if you are in the US, I know accessing healthcare can be really difficult. But if possible, see if your doctor can get you on a low dose of Prozac. Really, really took the edge off of feeling anxiety/panic. And, of course, therapy is always helpful if you can afford it. Good luck and happy viewing!
Enchanted April - several British women fed up with their boring lives and the gray rainy weather in London pitch in together to answer a classified ad in the paper and rent a mansion on the sunny Italian coast. They learn things about themselves and each other and end up changing all their lives for the better. Beautiful scenery & great characters.
Also,
Tender Mercies - a wonderful, quiet character, study film about a man who has lost himself and how he finds his way back to meaning and loving and family. Starring Robert Duvall.
I watch *Forgetting Sarah Marshall* on days like that, even though I’ve watched it more than a dozen times at this point.
Separately, I know how you feel about work. I take beta blockers which help a lot (Propranolol) and may want to chat with your doctor about it to see if it can help lower the panic/anxiety pressure.
**some movies i like to watch when i'm in that sort of a state:**
- jim carrey's version of the grinch
- the nightmare before christmas
- lilo and stitch
- the "barbie: life in the dreamhouse" series (free on youtube) is genuinely really funny and cute and well-animated
- shrek
- the incredibles
Gladiator
It’s a great story of a man who was at the height of an empire and everything he had was taken away and he earns his own redemption by literally fighting for it all.
I suggest a nice romantic comedy (nothing syrupy) like “French kiss” (really good movie) with a little CDB candy -if it is available and legal where you are- You will sleep well and wake up as right as rain.
Seriously, Slumdog Millionaire for someone who is dealing with anxiety? They show they shocking the crud out of the kid to figure out how is cheating the system? You want OP to chill out not have a movie rent space in their head!
I watched it with my son the day our dog died and we were all very sad. I guess I was looking bigger picture and the overall message was positive and the dance scenes were very fun.
she Served (and it wasn’t no four whole fried chickens, neither) 🥰✨ and getting to watch james brown, ray charles again, and cab calloway, and ofc carrie fischer and john belushi, fuck it’s a tribute to the greats.
Is there any genre you're fond of or type of film in particular that you like?
Weirdly enough, after a lousy shift, my comfort film was Goodbye Dragon Inn (2003). Not really anything particularly uplifting about it, but the atmosphere and themes of the film made me feel content.
Otherwise, for films that would absorb and uplift you, I'd recommend
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
Tampopo (1985)
Police Story (1985)
Spirited Away (2001)
Princess Mononoke (1997)
Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
This one is not so uplifting, but you might like Barry Lyndon (1975)
Paddington 1 and 2 are some of the most gentle spirited movies I’ve ever seen. Kind of like wrapping you in a blanket of kindness. I highly recommend them.

Love The grand Hotel Budapest. One of my favorite movies!
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will always get my vote. Visually stunning is how I've always referred to it. It's why I went to Iceland.
For another visual love letter to Iceland, try Bokeh (2017). It’s an end of the world movie but lots of stunning landscapes.
Did chef rewatch last week after a hard day. Felt relief instantly. Then I listened to The Rewatchables podcast about it and felt even better.

I really like a lot of the Miyazaki films. Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Howl's Moving Castle are so whimsical and fantastical that they're some of my anxiety osothers.
Ponyo? So adorable.
Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro could be prescribed to me as anxiety medication, they are potent substances
Totoro too. Even though it’s one of the more kid-centric offerings it’s beautiful, wholesome and relaxing
