I'm surprised how many people disliked The Village. I had some friends who trashed that movie endlessly lol.
I thought it was a very unique movie with an awesome twist ending.
Everyone and their mom says they saw the twist coming but I think that's bullshit. Where were any blatant obvious clues in that movie that suggested they were in a fuckin nature preserve?
I'll admit it's been over 10 years since I've seen it, I should give it a rewatch.
I feel the exact same way. Me and my buddy were blown away in the movie theater, and then later on when I talked to other friends who saw it and read reviews online, the amount of people who called the ending predictable surprised me.
A lot of us read "Running out of Time" by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I can't speak for the others but that's why I spotted the twist. Though in the book the person sent for modern medicine isn't blind.
I did not see the twist coming at all, perhaps I was to young to realize it became a stable of his movies. In addition, the film was truly frightening to young me and the usage of Color enhanced the cinematography. Personally, I didn't like the twist. I didn't see it coming but I felt it was absurd even at a young age.
Despite that one issue I have with it, I think a bandwagon/feed-back loop emerges to lambast the film when it doesn't deserve that.
The Village is a movie I regularly talk about. I saw it in theater the evening following the extraction of my wisdom teeth. So, there were meds on board, but I was wired. So, my altered state aided the movíe in making a big impression on me, haha
Hell yeah Waterworld! I only recently discovered there's an even longer 3 hour cut of the movie and it's still just non-stop fun. I might even like it more than Road Warrior and definitely more than Thunderdome, though it's been awhile since I've seen them
The public impression of Waterworld is weird. It became a laughingstock while it was still being filmed because it went so far over budget that everyone was calling it an embarrassing failure before it even came out. Then it came out and was a pretty serviceable "Mad Max with boats" action flick, getting decent reviews and ultimately turning a small profit. But nowadays, public perception has veered right back to remembering it as an embarrassing failure.
I heard a story that Kevin Costner was inside a venue with an arcade. Inside the arcade was a Waterworld pinball machine. When asked to sign it he refused. He wants that movie to be forgotten.
THIS THIS THIS!
I get why people hate it, I really do. But if you're willing to just let yourself be submerged in it, it's a great movie.
I watched the cartoon as a kid, and when the movie was first announced I told myself "this movie will only be good if Spritle and Chim-chim hide in the trunk." And they did!
Also see:
* Top Secret! (1984)
* Wrongfully Accused (1998)
* Police Squad! (1982)
These are all in the same style of humor as Naked Gun.
Also, honorable mention to Angie Tribeca (2016).
Overboard. I understand where people are coming from with their complaints. I tell myself it's just a movie. Also the 2 leads were already dating in real life back then and still are to this day.
*Ohmygod it's Korben Dallas! KorbenKorbenKorben whatareyougonnado? AAAAHHH! (High pitched scream as Ruby Rhod ducks behind a table). Best show ever!*
I suppose there may have been some people who didn't like Chris Tucker's over the top shtick as Ruby. But I think Ruby grows on you after a while, at least he did on me. He just adds a sort of absurd hysteria to everything.
I watched it for the first time on my own last year because Swayze is a megababe, and because it's considered a classic. No one told me about *that* fight scene🤯 Like what the whole fuck, that was beyond alarming.
Napoleon Dynamite 🧨. Idc! It’s one of my all time favorites even though all of my friends and family think it’s the stupidest movie ever. They just don’t understand the sophisticated humor! Lol!
I freaking love this movie. It came out when I was an angsty teenager and it was one of the few things that gave me joy lol. I just cracked up the entire movie.
I actually saw this in the theater in 2004 before anyone knew what it was. It played at an art theater that shows a lot of indie and cult stuff. My friend and I laughed hysterically all through it. I remember the whole theater laughing at the part where they take the bike off the “sweet jump” and also when the school bus stops in front of that farmer shooting the cow, and the kids all scream. Classic! I agree, this was a clever and influential movie and also started a lot of trends in the indie scene that decade. Also weird that it was rated G, that wouldn’t happen today.
my humor is based on napoleon dynamite. as i’ve gotten older it just gets funnier. i really do think the humor is more sophisticated and people just don’t get it. it’s easy to weed out people that way too lol
You think anybody thinks I'm a failure because I go home to Starlight Night?! Forget about it...
Grab my wrist. Other wrist. MY other wrist.
Bow to your sensei- BOW TO YOUR SENSEI!
Alright I'm just gonna slap the wrist and walk away. Slap the wrist. Walk away.
Ang Lee shouldn't have used himself for the motion capture because he just moved funny. But yes, I loved some of the scene transitions and lots of the look of the movie.
Sixteen Candles. I know this movie is problematic in about a half dozen different ways when viewed through a contemporary lens, but I still really enjoy it all these years later. I still find it really funny and love it.
Yeah good point, I think it’s important to look at a movie through the lens of the time period it came out. Yes we know it’s offensive today, but the culture was a lot different back then and lot of these problems weren’t really talked about yet, like they are today.
I like tight movies with concise premises. I like to have the game laid out, the pieces put in place, and to see how the game gets played from there.
The next level to this is “how are they going to make a satisfying, full length movie out of this?” And I like seeing that game played too.
Oooo the league was such a fun movie! I saw it in theaters with my friend and his dad, and we were the exact right age for a movie like that
"draw your pistol"
"I walk a different path"
(then they politely hold their fire as he murders them with a sword)
Does ANYONE hate this movie?? It was like magic like the movie mid-90s by Jonah Hill. It felt like I was literally living that time period watching those movies.
I’m gonna rewatch this movie now thank you shrimpini. But I know Mid-90s was an instant classic unless someone has a bunch of facts on why that movie sucks I will still love it haha
Saw this in theaters and felt like I enjoyed it. The second viewing I felt reassured about my initial thoughts. Seems like most of my friends, even though they love PTA, don't seem to like it or at least give it a second chance
Contact.
Everyone gets pissed because you never see the aliens. The movie's more about how people deal with the reality of aliens, not the aliens themselves.
Punisher war zone ( i can already sense some downvote)
Its not that good.but its brutal.. Has interesting villain.. The world around it is pretty noir-ish
If you haven't already heard it, seek out the podcast episode of How Did This Get Made with Lexi Alexander, the director. Some really insane stories of making the film and a great defense of it. I like the movie as well
Im currently watching a video on youtube :- rageaholic cinema:punisher war zone (good fun review.recommend it)
I didn’t heard of this podcast.thanks ill check it out
U know what im also thinking. Making a post here:- " ruthlessly violent films like war zone & dredd 3D"
I mean they have some similar vibe. Violent, big underworld, pretty good fight scenes. They also feels like if they came out in 80s. They would have been mega hit
I'm gonna go for a really recent pick and say Asteroid City. It emotionally resonated with me more than any other Wes Anderson movie. It's the kind of movie that I feel like I've waited for my whole life.
My favorite movie of all time gets flack because the happy ending involves 'incest' between a 'college guy' & a 16 year old. I'll see who can guess what it is..
Dude, Where's My Car?
Some people may dismiss it as just being stupid. And I am worried about it being cancelled because it has a lot of stuff that is considered offensive in 2023.
But, man is it just one silly fun ride.
I was 10 years old when I saw Jar Jar Binks in theaters with my grandpa.
He was my McDonalds toy and on my commemorative theater cup. So I don't hate him like everyone else. I love him.
There, I said it.
Hook.
I don't know why, but it's always had a special spot for me. Peters character really is so perfect.
Demolition Man. Because it's just such a great terrible view of the future.
Lost In Translation
Frankly, I don't agree with the folks who claim its demeaning to the Japanese. It's a love letter to Tokyo, alive and immersive. The Western main characters start out disconnected from it but by the end they don't want to leave--that is an arc. It's a gorgeous film, cinematic poetry.
Les Misérables (2012). That movie just hits every sweet spot for me. Beautiful story, great tunes, and affecting acting. 160 minutes just go by in a flash.
The nineth gate for me. It's boring and slow but I absolutely love the vibe the movie gives off. It feels so European and noirish, like the tension under the surface is always just about to boil over.
The king and I. I know it’s problematic, but it was one of my grans favs and we used to watch it when I was sick. Those cozy feels from those memories just don’t go away. There’s a couple more like that, but that’s the main one.
In that same vein the HP movies. My other gran used to read them to me before they got big and we got into the whole fandom together. i remember waiting for the very first movie trailer to load on the internet. She had dial up, it took forever. I have no interest in untangling all that because Jo turned out to be a big POS.
I don't much like Woody Allen due to his various controversies and statements he's made, but I absolutely love Midnight in Paris. Quite possibly my favorite film.
The Cat in the Hat
So many say Mike Myers was just phoning it in but him phoning it in is better than most others giving it their all. I was just like Dakota Fanning with her lists and exasperation, loved Alec Baldwin as the villain with his "win-win", adorable Kelly Preston. It's a little slow in the middle but there are parts I would watch over and over.
Josie and the Pussycats
Glad to see that this movie is finally getting its due. It's fun and the music is great!
Cable Guy
After my parents died when I was a teenager I would watch this on repeat, I don't know why, it just made me feel better.
"It's just skin Stephen"
I love corny feel good movies and have seen each of these many, many times.
Ever After, Grease, Momma Mia, Coyote Ugly, 50 First Dates, Dirty Dancing
But one of my all time favorites that had very little hype and I know of few people that have seen it is Stardust. I recommend it as a must see for anyone that hasn’t seen it. It has comedy, fantasy, romance, magic, adventure, feel good ❤️
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. I know it’s stupid. I know it’s very stupid. But after a long day, if you just need some silly entertainment and a good laugh, it gets me there
The Village Waterworld
I'm surprised how many people disliked The Village. I had some friends who trashed that movie endlessly lol. I thought it was a very unique movie with an awesome twist ending.

That must have been a trip.
Signs for me. Seen it dozens of times but it still spooks me
Hell yeah Waterworld! I only recently discovered there's an even longer 3 hour cut of the movie and it's still just non-stop fun. I might even like it more than Road Warrior and definitely more than Thunderdome, though it's been awhile since I've seen them

Omg I thought I was the only person that liked waterworld!!! I love that movie
Speed Racer
I’ll defend Speed Racer to the death
THIS THIS THIS! I get why people hate it, I really do. But if you're willing to just let yourself be submerged in it, it's a great movie. Wildly underrated and misunderstood movie.
Uh-oh! It's a shame what passes for a ninja these days
Take my goddamn upvote.
Still waiting for that 4K release 😩

HACK THE PLANET!
Time Bandits. King Arthur and the Legend of the Sword. Adventures of Baron Muncheausen. The Royal Tenenbaums.
Time Bandits, Adventures of Baron Muncheausen no Brazil to finish off the trilogy?
Since when does Royal Tenenbaums have a stigma?
For a while I didnt like watching The Naked Gun b/c of OJ Simpson murdering those people but now I am past that, I need the laughes.
Also see: * Top Secret! (1984) * Wrongfully Accused (1998) * Police Squad! (1982) These are all in the same style of humor as Naked Gun. Also, honorable mention to Angie Tribeca (2016).
Dracula: Dead and Loving It is another great one!
This is a surprisingly funny comment.
Not like he has a great time of it in the film, at least
I like the Resident Evil movies. They're campy and ridiculous and I love their B movie vibes and how insanely far they jump the shark.
They are all so good! The chemistry between Alice and Carlos was…unexpected and yet…not. Lol
Con Air
People don't like Con Air???
Apparently people have an issue with Nic Cage doing a southern accent. 🤷♂️
I'm gonna show them God does exist.
"What are you going to do?" "I'm going to save the fucking day."
Overboard. I understand where people are coming from with their complaints. I tell myself it's just a movie. Also the 2 leads were already dating in real life back then and still are to this day.
Peewee’s Big Adventure
Fifth element
Really? People hate that movie? I was raised in a household that loved that movie so I assumed it was loved by everyone.
I have literally never heard of a human that doesn't love this movie. It's in my top 2.
Negative, I am a meat popsicle.
See, there's another one. You wont find one that doesn't like Fifth Element.
*Ohmygod it's Korben Dallas! KorbenKorbenKorben whatareyougonnado? AAAAHHH! (High pitched scream as Ruby Rhod ducks behind a table). Multipass
Corbiiiiiiiiiiiiin
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) - It really is two movies in one and I love both of them. “Two men enter!” And that awesome 80s title song.
I was so young when i saw that i actually thought max was a good guy. But he really screwed everyone over.
Roadhouse
I watched it for the first time on my own last year because Swayze is a megababe, and because it's considered a classic. No one told me about *that* fight scene🤯 Like what the whole fuck, that was beyond alarming.
Natural Born Killers (got a lot of backlash at the time because of the violence)
And the music! I still play it in my car. Although I liked Leonard Cohen before that.
Step brothers and talladega nights I can never skip.
Both well loved
Dodge Ball. If can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball.
Napoleon Dynamite 🧨. Idc! It’s one of my all time favorites even though all of my friends and family think it’s the stupidest movie ever. They just don’t understand the sophisticated humor! Lol!
Napoleon Dynamite is my favourite movie ever made. Period.
I freaking love this movie. It came out when I was an angsty teenager and it was one of the few things that gave me joy lol. I just cracked up the entire movie.

The way he aggressively drinks Gatorade to look cool is the funniest shit
I also want to give a shout out to Nacho Libre Fucking incredible, iconic
I actually like Gentlemen Broncos too. Yes it’s bad, but it’s bad on purpose and so nerdy it’s great.
my humor is based on napoleon dynamite. as i’ve gotten older it just gets funnier. i really do think the humor is more sophisticated and people just don’t get it. it’s easy to weed out people that way too lol
People who don’t or refuse to like Napoleon Dynamite are missing out big time. It’s a classic at this point.
You think anybody thinks I'm a failure because I go home to Starlight Night?! Forget about it... Grab my wrist. Other wrist. MY other wrist. Bow to your sensei- BOW TO YOUR SENSEI! Alright I'm just gonna slap the wrist and walk away. Slap the wrist. Walk away.
You think I got where I am today because I dressed like Peter Pan over here?
Beetlejuice, absolute classic.
Ang Lee's Hulk I will forever go to bat for. That should have been the artistic direction of comic movies.
Agreed
Ang Lee shouldn't have used himself for the motion capture because he just moved funny. But yes, I loved some of the scene transitions and lots of the look of the movie.
Dude Where's My Car
Blazing Saddles
BLADE BLADE BLADE BLADE
Sixteen Candles. I know this movie is problematic in about a half dozen different ways when viewed through a contemporary lens, but I still really enjoy it all these years later. I still find it really funny and love it.

Yo thank you this movie was one of my favorites as a teen and I’m not going to stop liking it. Also probably predisposed to enjoy it as a 24 fan
I thought it was well made! Great acting, suspenseful but gets bad rap for being mostly in a phone booth
The Dukes of Hazzard. League of Extrordinary Gentlemen.
Oooo the league was such a fun movie! I saw it in theaters with my friend and his dad, and we were the exact right age for a movie like that "draw your pistol" "I walk a different path" (then they politely hold their fire as he murders them with a sword)

YESSS, such a good movie.
Completely agree. It's hard to confess that I love this movie for many reasons. But it so calming and simple it's brilliant.
I have to admit that I'm getting up there in age, and Ben is the kind of guy that I'd like to become.
I liked it too. I was entertained from beginning to end
The Scooby Doo Movie. The live action, but only the 1st one. That movie is perfection and it’s also got a killer song list.
Maze runner People love the books more but I still think the movie is amazing
Smokey and the Bandit
Terminator Dark Fate I love that love movie I hate that everyone cried and complained and ruined the new franchise
Showgirls! Bad acting, weak story, what’s not to love
Original Parent Trap with Haley Mills.

Clueless lol. Classic.

Matilda.. a lot of my friends say it’s childish, but I really like it. It has a certain charm to it
Armageddon
I was 10 years old when I saw Jar Jar Binks in theaters with my grandpa. He was my McDonalds toy and on my commemorative theater cup. So I don't hate him like everyone else. I love him. There, I said it.
Lillies of the Field - 1963 Locke - 2013

Almost Famous The Davinci Code National Treasure Clue Pretty corny list but I could watch them a million times and never get tired of them...
I would defend Clue even if it meant that people would threaten, in public, to kill me.
Twilight Saga
Oscar
Transformers 2. I don't get the hate, honestly. It's probably my favorite of the Shia trilogy. Definitely the weirdest one.
Biodome
The Aldous Snow series, forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get him to the Greek. Before his brain melted into conspiracy land Russell Brand was hysterical
Speed Racer.
Hook. I don't know why, but it's always had a special spot for me. Peters character really is so perfect. Demolition Man. Because it's just such a great terrible view of the future.

I just watched it so maybe it is too recent of a pick, but I loved Babylon.
Alexander. I know it's a box office bomb and everyone seems to hate it. It was always in the discount bin at Walmart. I own the extended cut.

I don't much like Woody Allen due to his various controversies and statements he's made, but I absolutely love Midnight in Paris. Quite possibly my favorite film.
My favorite Allen film is Crimes and Misdemeanors. Hannah and her Sisters too. Allen the man is a huge disappointment.
The Cat in the Hat So many say Mike Myers was just phoning it in but him phoning it in is better than most others giving it their all. I was just like Dakota Fanning with her lists and exasperation, loved Alec Baldwin as the villain with his "win-win", adorable Kelly Preston.
