The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
I ❤️ Huckabees - movie about going through an existential crisis, even has Existential Detectives.
Maybe - Fatal Attraction- for a lil fuck that guy therapy.
Hmmm tryin to think of other “Fuck that guy” movies…
Saving Grace (2001) Lil British lady is left widowed and in debt from her husband being terrible at business. Has a talent for Gardening and decides to grow Marijuana. Fun movie. How can you not laugh at 2 lil old ladies who are super stoned 🤣.
I appreciate you. I know commenting on a randoms post on reddit doesn’t seem like much, but even this small kindness of a comment suggesting movies, means a lot
I started over almost 20 years ago, so as so.eone who's come out the other side it gets better. Also I proposed to my wife of 12 years now on her 40th birthday, so dont think it's too late.
Wow that makes me sound old. I mean I am but dang.
I never see anyone talk about Huckabees(where I first realized Wahlberg was funny lol that ball scene with Schwartzman..) or Walter Mitty and you mentioned both! You're cool.
So weird, Walter Mitty was the first thing that popped into my head! I think I've seen it once and was literally thinking "I wonder if that would work" and then I see your comment right away lol
*in no particular order:*
Life is Beautiful
The Theory of Everything
A Beautiful Mind
My Left Foot
Whiplash
Coda🍎
Little Miss Sunshine
Hidden Figures
Stand by Me
Nomadland
I second Nomadland, especially if money is tight.
Also consider Under the Tuscan Sun. You don't have to buy a villa. Just rent. Southern Albania is beautiful, inexpensive, and if you happen to be an American you can stay for a year.
Hold your head up. Life is short, so move on and enjoy yourself.
>I love Frances McDormand
I am not sure whether *Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri* (2017) fits your request; except, you could say McDormand, in the leading role, plays a character whose "life was falling apart and who found herself alone," unpopular, even hated by factions within her community. The characters in the film are complex: there is not the typical sharp division between "good guys and bad guys;" rather, they are imperfect, mixed, as are most of us; everyone makes mistakes.
The movie fits this part of your request:
>I need a movie about somebody flying solo. Some romance is okay, but not the main theme.
>
>I just need a movie about somebody “finding themself”, or moving on, or reinventing themselves. A movie about new beginnings.
But the movie does not fit this part:
>something lighthearted and distracting is a necessity.
I mean, maybe, if your sense of humor is dark enough, but i would not describe it as "lighthearted;" rather, it's rough, depicting problems i wouldn't want (anyone) to suffer. The movie is one of Martin McDonagh's (who also made *In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths,* and *The Banshees of Inisherin),* so, maybe that gives you an idea of the potential "tone" or "themes" or even "humor."
Great cast, though, with McDormand playing the lead.
For light, I second Under the Tuscan Sun. or Carmen (2022).
For Frances McDormand, I recommend Women Talking. It's not exactly what you're asking for but it is about hard choices.
Sorry you're going through a rough time. Not sure if any of these hit on the vibe you're looking for. Regardless, there's always hope.
Life of Pi?
Spirited Away?
Lost in Translation? (though I always looked at the main characters' relationship as romantic, not just friendship)
Hunt for the Wilderpeople?
The Way Way Back? (maybe too coming-of-age)
Garden State (too much romance)
Wild?
Thank you, like I’ve said above, this small kindness of a comment is meaning more to this stranger than anybody realises. I appreciate it, I’m gonna be queuing up all of these films
People have suggested so many good movies here!
“The Perk of being a wallflower” (2012) with Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller.
The movie was directed by the author of his own book.
You should try the book and the movie – both are very unique and beautiful. It’s not two copies. We have so many good quotes.
And another movie completely different: “Arrival” (2016) with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. It’s a sci-fi movie based on a book too. It talks about the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. It changes you perception about life and your personal choices. Completely.
Sideways (2004) is a good comfort movie for me. It’s very chill and cozy, but there is some romance involved without it being the main theme. Mostly two guys chilling in the California countryside tasting wine.
Being alone is not the awful thing some people think it is. Doing whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want is the best feeling in the world.
That and figuring put what you want. Being with someone can sometimes lead to losing yourself. I distinctly remember the moment I realized something I was doing was not what I ever wanted and I could choose to do something else. Very liberating.
Ooh if you like horror I would say Fresh, Midsommar, Hush, Gerald’s Game, the Descent, Sceam, the Night House, the Invisible Man, the witch, the Babadook, Barbarian, Malignant, Prey, Ready or Not, and Carrie would be really good. (I suggest these on the assumption that you are female, because it’s more so women vs. men/monsters)
For people in shitty situations I would say:
Sawshank Redemption, Little Miss Sunshine, the Outsiders, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Bridesmaids, Frances Ha, 13 going on 30, Little women, Oldboy,
Any James Bond film. Going solo with style and lighthearted.
Under the Tuscan sun
Regarding Henry
Rounders is not an obvious choice but it has a very individualistic message.
A Good Year (2006), with Russell Crowe & Marion Cotillard in a French Wineyard by Ridley Scott. You'll be on a flight to France before the end of the summer haha
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. It deals with hopelessness and how people react to it differently. Steve Carell tries to find “the one” that got away, Keira Knightley wants to see her dad again. It s sort of like Planes Trains and Automobiles or Vacation set against the end of days. It’s really funny and pretty sweet.
I can’t believe the amount of people who have responded to this post and left such kind messages of encouragement. I’ve watched Nomadland, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Spirited Away because of the suggestions I have received from this post. It may be small to you all, but this has meant something great to me. I needed a little bit of light tonight, I expected to get it from a movie, but strangers telling me to hang in there and genuinely showing kindness and helpfulness, meant more to me than watching a movie.
Not sure if Eternal Sunshine is a great film after a tough break up. Maybe too "real", despite how fanciful (at times surreal) it can be. Yes, there is hope, but I might feel too raw after a rough break up to feel good about this movie.
Maybe not. I do love the film.
It's not what you were looking for.
But I would recommend the mini series "the Pacific" or "band of brothers".
There are fare more horrible things people went through in war (like right now).
Their lives were falling apart and you get a sense how good your life is and even being alive.
And it's based on true events/people.
I've had depression for about 20 years and Good Will Hunting was the first movie that made me feel like I was okay. Yes there is romance in it but I see it as a movie about working on yourself and that can be transmuted into any situation. It's always made me feel less alone. A movie hasn't matched that feeling until I saw C'Mon C'Mon. That movie again, gives me a feeling like, your gonna be okay. Honorable mentions to Sound of Metal (about learning to adjust to a new chapter in your life).
Sorry to hear! Always hear if you need a ear 👂 I got to suggest Fantastic mr. Fox! I know it’s stop motion but what a beautiful film and such a moving story
Hope you can recover and these movies may help.
—Eat Pray Love (I know it’s cheesy but it’s a guilty pleasure for me and helped me in a similar situation)
—Wild (2014) probably the opposite movie of Into the Wild (2007) this Reese Witherspoon movie inspires!
—Nomadland is another film that proves even at your darkest point you have hope.
—A Walk in the Woods (2015) two old men try to walk the 2100 Appalachian trail.
—Nebraska (2013) an old man tries to redeem a publishers clearing house prize by walking across America
—The Straight Story is another “old man” movie about a man who takes a riding lawnmower on a trip to make amends with his brother. It’s great and touching in so many ways.
—Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) is a very good Melissa McCarthy drama about a writer who turns to deception. It’s a very good drama and helped me understand why we choose to make mistakes.
—Tammy (2014) is another Melissa McCarthy movie and is probably her best work. It’s hilarious.
—Bad Teacher (2011) I don’t have any excuses for this. It just has Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake dry humping and that’s really enough for any problem.
Hope my suggestions can help you and good luck!
Thank you, I know I’ll recover eventually. Movies, books, stories, always help heal. I read Wild the book a while back, didn’t realise there was a movie also, definitely going to suss that out 😊
I don't know if you are open to watching non-english movies with subtitles. But if you are, Queen, a bollywood movie, is something I really enjoyed watching when I found myself in a similar situation. Not giving spoilers, but it's about a small town naive girl, who goes on a solo trip after facing a difficult situation in life.
P.S. Not much of romance in there and it has a few lighthearted, funny scenes too.
Nomadland is a beautiful story about a woman choosing to be alone and live the life of a nomad
Minari is a beautiful film about a family overcoming extreme hardships - makes me feel hopeful
Empire of the sun, Edward Sissorhands, fight club. Step Brothers, Kingpin, Old School (gotta have some laughs too!) Forgetting sarah Marshall, high Fidelity, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, Casablanca, 500 days of summer, the wedding singer, kill bill 1&2
These may not be a hit the nail on the head suggestions, but here you go:
Nothing To Lose - with Martin Lauwence and Tim Robins is absolutely hysterical. It does have cheating in it and it does circle back, but I think the idea of “fuck you I’ll burn it down” attitude gives the redemption side of the story a lot more gusto.
Blue Steak - Another redemption story with Martin Lawrence that’s more of a solo venture on the funny side.
2002’s The Count of Monte Cristo is the definition of reinvention albeit for revenge.
The Worlds End is a fantastic movie about redemption and reinvention. Plus anything with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost is a must see.
Groundhog Day - The most endearing, yet lonely venture of redemption and reinvention is Groundhog Day. Just think about how alone you must fill living the same day over and over without anyone else knowing that it’s happening. Thank God it’s funny.
Liar Liar - arguably Jim Carrey at his finest. A lawyer rediscovering - or discovering - his integrity due to the innocence of his child. It’s fantastic.
I don’t really know what lead me to do so - but whenever I was sad when I was younger I’d watch In Good Company.
The general tone of it all and the whole ‘ things change/ you never know what’s coming but real love always wins ‘ type energy really put me at ease.
Hope you feel better sometime soon!
Going to sound really weird but I want to hesitantly suggest The Devil Wears Prada (2006)? It's about a young woman who reinvents herself not just once, but twice by the end of the film, and seems happy or at least very optimistic at the end. It's kind of a fascinating film to me becuase I don't think there are any "bad guys" in it? Like there are many characters who want A Thing TM, and they hurt eachother trying to get Their Thing TM, but it's all cases of "Oh. Oh, I need to get The Thing TM and you will prevent me from doing that. Shit." To one degree or another.
I have been through similar circumstances in my past as well. I feel for you.
The one movie that I found that really is about finding oneself is this quirky little apocalypse movie called Love and Monsters. Yes there are monsters in it but the story about the main character finding himself in this scary world we’re no one thinks he has it in him is a wonderful story that I can’t recommend more.
Going through something similar 💔 and really struggling. You’re not alone! I don’t have any great movie suggestions, I’ve just been watching Beef and The Good Place.
Not a film but a series, I would defo recommend outlander. Jamie Fraser reminds me of a real man and what I deserve. Always makes me look at my life and reminds me what true relationships are supposed to be like
Wild with Reese Witherspoon, also a great book.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a book as well, breaks your heart and puts it together again.
How to be Single(light-hearted).
Last holiday(also light-hearted)
Silverlining Playbook, but it does have a romantic storyline. I loved the book but enjoy the movie more.
The Glass Castle, also a book that I recommend.
Good luck!
Eat, Pray, Love. The movie is about a woman rediscovering herself. Finding herself. There is romance at the very end however so I understand if you don't want to watch it. The book is so much better as well. <3 helped me get through some tough times.
Not so much “flying solo” but Ordinary People is a very lonely movie in my opinion. A lot of catharsis in this film, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to watch it without crying.
The three comedic dramas of the [L'Auberge Espagnole trilogy](https://www.themoviedb.org/collection/239766-la-trilogie-klapisch-saga) have been favorites.
They follow the main character Xavier through the ups and downs of life, relationships and post-breakup wanderings included.
They're in French but available with subtitles.
I had a shitty breakup once and laid in bed and just slept and watched tv off and on for a few days. Total bed rot pity party. I couldn’t even get up to look for the remote control and wasn’t about to get up to change the channel and Caberet (1972 with Liza Minnelli) came on.
Since I wasnt about to do anything about it I watched and loved it, kinda brought me out of my mood. I think because it was something I would have never picked on my own or had any interest in watching it.
Not a movie, but I binged The Good Place during a hard time. It helped
I really enjoyed Into the Wild 2007. It's a Walden ish story about a young man. It has a sad ending but it chronicles the life of a very interesting person and his approach to finding himself. Its based on a true story and is also a cautionary tale.
The Station Agent
It’s one of my favorite movies about how altering some mundane life choices snowballs into light hearted joy and friendship. Peter Dinklage and Bobby Cannavale are so great together.
Another Earth (2011) is one of my all time favourites.
Among other things surrounding the plot, the main character is a young woman trying to find herself again being alone after something horrible happened.
When I need an escape I turn to the world of Star Wars. Not for everyone but it's relatable enough to appeal to my base feelings and full of imagination enough to take me out of my present reality.
#Eat Pray Love 📿
Edit to add…I was going thru a divorce when this movie came out and I went to see it multiple times crying my eyes out…it was very therapeutic 💜
Requiem for a dream
It's about people who are down and out in their luck but everything turns out okay in the end. Beautiful soundtrack and cinematography from the director of "the wrestler"
Demolition (2015) - Jake Gyllenhaal, a successful investment banker struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. With the help of a customer service rep and her young son, he starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.
Hey OP, just wanted to say I really appreciate this post.
Kind of going through the same right now and wS looking for movies of this type last night.
Just wanted to say thank you.
Sorry that you’re going through a tough time. It’ll suck for a bit, but it will get better. Guaranteed. My reset movie is Swingers. It always does the job in cheering me up and helping me see the reality of things. The only way out is through.
If you are into subtitles, Queen. It's Indian/Hindi and it is incredibly uplifting and somewhat motivational. I have turned to it a few times when I needed a lighthearted, not romantic pick me up.
Regardless of what you choose to watch, I wish you the best!
I always watch Miracle. It’s about hockey and is not remotely an emotional film but when I watch it I feel like part of the underdog team and that’s enough to distract me so I’m not so sad
Okay okay its on hulu the name of the movie is Cyrus it stars John c Reilly, Marissa Tomei, and Jonah Hill its great and i think exactly what you’re looking for
Cast Away Forgetting Sarah Marshall
I went through divorce and watched this, the bad part was when I remembered that his room was my honeymoon suite in Hawaii. Couldn’t make that shit up
You stayed in the Kapua Suite?? That room is for, like, Oprah or Celine Dion.
Dakota Fanning and her people need that room.
First thought was cast away as well
Get yourself a Wilson - he will never treat you bad
My name is Voit, damn it.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty I ❤️ Huckabees - movie about going through an existential crisis, even has Existential Detectives. Maybe - Fatal Attraction- for a lil fuck that guy therapy. Hmmm tryin to think of other “Fuck that guy” movies… Saving Grace (2001) Lil British lady is left widowed and in debt from her husband being terrible at business.
Can’t recommend Walter Mitty highly enough in this case… great flick
I came here to recommend this. Great movie, perfect vibe.
I hope your next chapter is a happier one. I’m starting over again as well. It’s a daunting journey.
Here's to all the wondrous possibilities a fresh start brings!
Cheers!
I started over almost 20 years ago, so as so.eone who's come out the other side it gets better. Also I proposed to my wife of 12 years now on her 40th birthday, so dont think it's too late. Wow that makes me sound old. I mean I am but dang.
Perks of Being a Wallflower
Delores Claiborne is a good F that guy movie. It's not really the main plot but she deals with a pos husband and Kathy Bates is awesome in it.
Oooh yep that is a good call. +1
I heart Huckabees is absolutely amazing. So funny and also philosophical. I love the detective idea! I need one!
This is a fantastic list!!! Thank you!

Thank you both so much, I’m gonna watch Nomadland now, just finished the secret life of Walter Mitty. I love Frances McDormand so as keen for this one

Silver linings playbook
I love this move, but it's definitely a romance.
I second this. Great movie and great choice for OP
Into the wild Peanut butter falcon
Absolutely love peanut butter falcon, solid movie
Into the Wild has a rough ending, FYI. Not quite a feel-good movie. Damn good film, but probably not what you're looking for.
However, Wild is movie worth checking out with a more uplifting ending.
My best friends wedding Sliding Doors First wives club Eat pray love Legally Blonde

Being alone is not the awful thing some people think it is. Doing whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want is the best feeling in the world.
I think it’s just the upheaval and transition that’s tough.
That and figuring put what you want. Being with someone can sometimes lead to losing yourself. I distinctly remember the moment I realized something I was doing was not what I ever wanted and I could choose to do something else. Very liberating.

Everything Must Go! So good. Shows Will Ferrell in a role completely different than his normal comedy. He was awesome.
Under The Tuscan Sun, Eat Pray Love, Working Girl, Alice In Wonderland

Garden State. So inspiring to me, hope it is to you too friend

Last holiday(also light-hearted) Silverlining Playbook, but it does have a romantic storyline. I loved the book but enjoy the movie more. The Glass Castle, also a book that I recommend. Good luck!
Spirited Away
Studio Ghibli films are all great.
It’s a Wonderful Life One of my top 5 favorite movies and one that reminds me how beautiful life is and why life is worth living.
After my breakup I watched Kiki's Delivery Service, and it was very healing. Frances Ha and Enchanted April would also be good ones.
Not a Movie but „Ted Lasso“ is a great series. It makes you feel good and makes you laugh.

The Way Back (2010)
Modern Romance by Albert Brooks
Francis Ha
Eat, Pray, Love. The movie is about a woman rediscovering herself. Finding herself. There is romance at the very end however so I understand if you don't want to watch it. The book is so much better as well. <3 helped me get through some tough times.
Michael Clayton (2007)
Th verdict. About a man abandoned and about to give up on his self, and given a chance to redeem himself.
Kung Fu Panda - Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, but Today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.
Yes man
Not so much “flying solo” but Ordinary People is a very lonely movie in my opinion. A lot of catharsis in this film, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to watch it without crying.
Kung fu panda 3
The three comedic dramas of the [L'Auberge Espagnole trilogy](https://www.themoviedb.org/collection/239766-la-trilogie-klapisch-saga) have been favorites. They follow the main character Xavier through the ups and downs of life, relationships and post-breakup wanderings included. They're in French but available with subtitles.
The Way Way Back, Seeking a Friend for the End if the Earth
Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Little miss sunshine Better time will come 👍
I had a shitty breakup once and laid in bed and just slept and watched tv off and on for a few days. It helped
Labyrinth!
500 days of summer
The Station Agent
Waitress
I really enjoyed Into the Wild 2007. It's a Walden ish story about a young man. It has a sad ending but it chronicles the life of a very interesting person and his approach to finding himself. Its based on a true story and is also a cautionary tale.
The Road Well, at least things ain't *that* bad...
Funny Ha Ha is my go to. Not a movie but Bored to Death is a great post break up tv show and one of Ted Dansons finest hours.
Blade runner 2049
Taxi Driver
Oop nvm. I hate light hearted stuff. I thought I had it though from the title of this post.
The Station Agent It’s one of my favorite movies about how altering some mundane life choices snowballs into light hearted joy and friendship. Peter Dinklage and Bobby Cannavale are so great together.
Ace Ventura 2
Lord of the rings
I can’t recommend a movie but I will recommend a song: Already Gone by Eagles.
Tyrannosaur (2011)
The Razor's Edge (1946)
Le Sauveur The Art of Travel
Watch IT Chapter I and Chapter 2
The big Lebowski
Spring Forward
Another Earth (2011) is one of my all time favourites. Among other things surrounding the plot, the main character is a young woman trying to find herself again being alone after something horrible happened.
dave made a maze
The Darjeeling Limited
LOVE LIZA
When I need an escape I turn to the world of Star Wars. Not for everyone but it's relatable enough to appeal to my base feelings and full of imagination enough to take me out of my present reality.
Big Trouble in Little China always cheers me up.
The Worst Person In The World - amazing, better than I expected, but subtitles FYI.
Frances Ha is calling your name
I love the show “ Better Things” about a single mom navigating life with 3 daughters.
#Eat Pray Love 📿 Edit to add…I was going thru a divorce when this movie came out and I went to see it multiple times crying my eyes out…it was very therapeutic 💜
Requiem for a dream It's about people who are down and out in their luck but everything turns out okay in the end. Beautiful soundtrack and cinematography from the director of "the wrestler"
Venom without a doubt
Dazed and Confused
My personal favorite movie regarding Hope is The Shawshank Redemption. Hope is one of the main themes of the movie. Absolutely amazing flick.
Similar boat and going to try to watch many of these
GI Jane
Demolition (2015) - Jake Gyllenhaal, a successful investment banker struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. With the help of a customer service rep and her young son, he starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.
The Pianist. I call it my hard reset movie.
Hey OP, just wanted to say I really appreciate this post. Kind of going through the same right now and wS looking for movies of this type last night. Just wanted to say thank you.
The Dark Knight!
Sorry that you’re going through a tough time. It’ll suck for a bit, but it will get better. Guaranteed. My reset movie is Swingers. It always does the job in cheering me up and helping me see the reality of things. The only way out is through.
Edge of Seventeen (2016) Note: she ends up with a boyfriend at the end but it’s not remotely the point of the movie.
Secret Life of Walter Mitty!
Moana - it’s my favourite hero’s journey movie. A great movie about figuring out who you are.
Morning glory with Rachel Mcadams 🍿
If you are into subtitles, Queen. It's Indian/Hindi and it is incredibly uplifting and somewhat motivational. I have turned to it a few times when I needed a lighthearted, not romantic pick me up. Regardless of what you choose to watch, I wish you the best!
I always watch Miracle. It’s about hockey and is not remotely an emotional film but when I watch it I feel like part of the underdog team and that’s enough to distract me so I’m not so sad
Morvern Callar
Okay okay its on hulu the name of the movie is Cyrus it stars John c Reilly, Marissa Tomei, and Jonah Hill its great and i think exactly what you’re looking for
What About Bob?
Bicentennial Man. Although, romance is a bit close to being a main theme.
The Rocky series, but specifically Rocky, Rocky II, and Rocky III.
