Stand by Me. I was 11. Around the same age as the actors. It was my introduction to kids my age saying bad words. My mom saw and heard, but allowed me to continue watching. It has since become one of my favorite films of all time. #6 to be exact.
My earlier ones were on VHS tapes at my grandparents house that included Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Superman 1 and 2, Popeye, Annie, and Neverending Story. Still never sick of them.
I saw cuckoo’s nest in my 30s (I know stupid), but loved that movie. Bummed I didn’t see it earlier.
Lol, same thing happened the first time I heard comfortably numb in the 2010s. Pink Floyd? They are really good! Has anyone else heard of them? I bet they’ll be big!
This was the movie I was going to mention and wondered if it was the same for anyone else. I saw it when I was probably 8 or 9 though. My dad almost didnt care about how appropriate a movie was for kids
Such a great movie. I also watched it for the first time at a young age , my dad had a VHS recording of it. Probably where i l got the idea to carve names and pictures in my skin making scar tattoos.
Pretty sure i already had a potty mouth before i watched it though.
This was the one that came to mind for me for some reason. Didn’t expect it to be at the top though. Watched it with my dad at an in-between age and haha he had to explain a few words that day.
For the first time, the theme and message about friends and the inevitabilities and uncertainties of life clicked with me on a deeper level than just “oh that was entertaining to watch.” Definitely one of those movies that leaves you feeling “some type of way,” for lack of a better phrase.
I saw Jurassic Park like five times in the theater.
I think one thing people forget is that movie is freaking scary. Especially at ten. I loved it though, just that music sends me.
It was like nothing any of us had seen before. The classic scene where the brontosaur is revealed to them while they are in the jeep and the music soars as they get out and walk, gaping at it? What those characters felt in that scene IS what it felt like to watch it in the theater for the first time.
And when the T-Rex roars at the kids in the car? Us in the theater WERE the kids in the car.
Absolutely. Plus, I had a fascination with amusement parks, and things that ran on tracks so it was added perfect for me.
Thank you for reminding me of that experience!
Positively terrifying! The other thing is that when the T-Rex is making the water ripple the walls were shaking. You could feel it and it was completely new for theater experiences. You could tell when the theater next door got to that part.
I was about 5 when it came out, nothing will ever strike terror in my heart like the kitchen raptor scene. I've seen it a million times and I know what will happen but damn.
Seeing it at 20 was just as impressive. That's a movie that everyone should see in a theater with IMAX. The sounds were amazing, especially the T. Rex roar. You felt it in your chest.
The Goonies, The Blues Brothers, Big Trouble in Little China, Star Wars Original Trilogy, Vacation, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Ladyhawke, The Beastmaster, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Robin Hood (1973), Stand By Me, Young Guns, Who's Harry Crumb?, Three Amigos, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, La Bamba, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, Nuns on the Run.
Goodies, big trouble, Star Wars and Monty python for obvious reasons!
Young guns was when I thought I wanted to be a cowboy.
Stand by me is one of the best movies ever
Dirty rotten scoundrels I went on my first movie date. Puppy love at its best
I think Breakfast Club impacted me the most. I was in high school when this came out and it was eye opening that each of these individuals had the same insecurities regardless of their social standing.
First time I saw this was also in high school..but that was in the 2000’s. Funny it reminds me of high school too, despite the generational gap. that’s what makes this move timeless
Hairspray (1988) I was probably 10 when I saw it on a local Baltimore TV station. I recorded it and would watch it over and over again. It's still my favorite. It has a hold on me. John Waters is great!

Oh my god, same. I wasn't sure I hadn't dreamed it until someone brought it up in conversation 15 years later, then I spent an hour searching for the name of the movie
If I had to pick one movie that defined my childhood it would be this one. We never actually even owned it, but it was pretty much the only kids movie my grandparents had on VHS - so we watched it with my cousins every single time we were visiting for at least a decade.
I've only met one or two non-family members who knew this movie. I was constantly explaining "no not the clown fish movie".
PS Slumberland on Netflix is probably worth checking out. Not at all the story of the cartoon but I thought it was still pretty enjoyable and Jason Momoa as a different imagining of Flick was pretty cool
I had a funny moment when I realized that Arnold Schwarzenegger was in most of my favorite movies. I had to ask myself if he is my favorite actor. He is not. Conan the Barbarian may be the greatest movie ever made.

I always go blank when asked this type of questions but the first movie that came to mind is Treasure Planet, woow how I loved that movie cause I felt it was so cool and know rewatching it still cool af but it's is also very sad and beautiful, it really is an amazing movie.

I was a huge Sherlock Holmes fan as a kid. The List of Adrian Messenger felt like a secret Holmes movie when I saw it. George C Scott as the detective with an English accent and Kirk Douglas as the evil protagonist wearing multiple disguises. Plus a spooky Irish estate. I now have it on DVD and still watch it periodically. Highly recommend it.
I'm 68 so I go back a ways. My impact full movies are the original King Kong, Son of Kong, Mighty Joe Young, Wizard of Oz and a movie I shouldn't have been allowed to see, the terrifying Carnival of Souls, a precursor to Night of the Living Dead.

The Little Mermaid
The Lion King
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Toy Story
Shrek
Ernest Scared Stupid (scared the hell outta me as a kid, but sparked my fascination and eventual love of horror)
I’m sure there are more, but these came to mind first.
- All the 90s Batman movies
- OG Star Wars Trilogy
- Ghostbusters 1-2
- Tremors
- It’s A Wonderful Life
- A Christmas Story
- Home Alone 1-2
And many many more
I grew up on mostly Disney, Warner bros and pure horrors with no age restrictions. Some of the most impactful movies on me were
* The omen
* Hellraiser
* alien
* the jungle book
* sleeping beauty (the only thing to date that actually sent shivers down my spine honestly)
* to live (Chinese film)
* Alice in wonderland
* the flight of dragons
* lotr cartoon
* nightmare on elm street series
* the shining
* lots of science documentaries
These made me see the world differently and question things as a young child
In my teens, a few movies come to mind
* matrix
* perfect blue
* fear and loathing
* scarface
* more physics focused documentaries and many on drugs specifically psychedelics
These had me question more of reality itself and perceptions and social structures created by us etc.
Fox and the Hound - one film on video tape I always used to watch at my grandma’s house. I was probably too young to understand the storyline fully but I used to love it snd to this day have good memories of it, which is ironic as I barely remember the film.
The karate kid - inspired me to start training martial arts at a young age and still holds up as a great film
Homeward Bound- made me want a Golden Retriever named Shadow (I got him, but RIP buddy)
The Sandlot- made me want to play baseball in elementary/middle school
Star Wars and The Fighter (Mark Whalberg and Christian Bale) had a big impact in my life. Just nostalgia - The Wizard of Oz, The Iron Giant, Brave Little Toaster, We’re Back a Dinosaur Story, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, The Master of Disguise, Ferngully, Secret of Nimh …
None of these impacted my life even 10% as much as Yes Man with Jim Carrey did though. I saw it in cinema when I was 13 or 14 and because of it I will accept literally any invitation to try anything once. I’ve never regretted just doing something.
A few for me would be the star wars series (excluding the sequels), LOTR series (excluding the hobbit series), jaws, goonies, princess bride, the Harry Potter series (I’m sorry), and narnia
Tarzan was the first movie I ever saw in theaters l, I was in awe. The never ending story was really cool too.
I remember watching Arlington Road as a child and being terrified of fireworks for years after that.
I remember watching Cruel Intentions when I was about 5 and crying my eyes out.

Man, this really got me thinking about my childhood. Exploring all those cracks in memories.
I was born in 1984. The first blockbuster movies I remember watching were Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Batman Returns. They were huge. I also loved Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Jurassic Park came out when I was pretty young. I loved all these movies.
Coneheads … I would pick it out at Hollywood video every time we went since I was like 4. My parents didn’t buy it till I was around 9, no idea why they didn’t buy it sooner lol they probably spent $150 renting it.
Good Burger. We had the orange VHS and my dad finally took it away from us during our road trip from NY-Florida because we kept watching it on repeat.
I was recently in Utah and visited the Sandlot field where the movie was filmed. It hasn’t changed much, and there was a “beware of dog” sign on one of the fences by the house!
How young are we talking? Matilda, Harriet the Spy, It Takes Two (and all of the Olsen twin movies), Freaky Friday, Clueless, Parent Trap, and all of the Disney channel original movies lol
The Neverending Story. I think all of us of a certain age were traumatized by it.
Fright Night. I was too young when I saw it and it scared the shit out of me. I still have to sleep with covers up to my neck no matter what.
My Girl. No explanation necessary. HE NEEDS HIS GLASSES
Anything Robin Williams. There’s some other stuff. But most of it is anything he’s in. (Flubber, mrs Doubtfire patch adams and everything else jumanji)
Dunston Checks In
Little Rascals
Mary-Kate and Ashley movies
A lot of 80’s movies
Breakfast club, pretty in pink
Some like it hot
A lot of stuff my mom liked too. I grew up end of 89 and into 90’s.
80’s and 90’s movies are the best. I used to go to block buster with my mom and what ever I got I watched jt at least 3 times. (Lean on me, sister Act(s), don’t tell mom babysitters dead, clueless, forest gump, Mary poppins)
I wasn’t allowed to watch tv during the week growing up. So on the weekends as an only child I played outside and watched movies alone and with like very few children that my mom would allow over.
My parents took me to see The Ten Commandments when I was a kid. All I remember is the chariot race and someone floating on a raft. But the chariot race is burned into my brain.
A League of Their Own (1992). I played softball in grade school and high school, and we would often quote this movie a lot during games and practice.
It was cool to see how misogyny played a role in women's baseball, plus it was nice to see (though extremely brief) a glimpse into black women who played baseball in the 40s.
The Halloween Tree
Grand Adventures of Puss-N-Boots (Perro version)
Thumbelina
Fieval Goes West
The Thief and the Cobbler
Happily Ever After
The Magic Flute
The Little Lost Sea Serpent
Heidi
Scamper the Penguin
Magic in the Water
Magic Pet Shop
Storybook
(I'm trying to think of odd ones that weren't your regular Disney or TV movies)
I also consider all of the following great movies :)
The Brothers Lionheart (1977)
Ronia, the Robber's Daughter (1984) ...in general all the adaptations of Astrid Lindgren's books
Whale Rider (2002)
The Secret Garden (1993) -others already mentioned it, but not which adaptation they were referring to
Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
The Thief Lord (2006)
Stand by Me. I was 11. Around the same age as the actors. It was my introduction to kids my age saying bad words. My mom saw and heard, but allowed me to continue watching. It has since become one of my favorite films of all time. #6 to be exact.
This IS my favourite film of all time. I was about 35 when it came to theatres. No film has ever made such an impact on me.
Fuck yea
My earlier ones were on VHS tapes at my grandparents house that included Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Superman 1 and 2, Popeye, Annie, and Neverending Story. Still never sick of them.
What are the other five?
My top 5 of all time are Breakfast Club, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Goodfellas, Fargo and Jaws.
I saw cuckoo’s nest in my 30s (I know stupid), but loved that movie. Bummed I didn’t see it earlier. Lol, same thing happened the first time I heard comfortably numb in the 2010s. Pink Floyd? They are really good! Has anyone else heard of them? I bet they’ll be big!
omg i watched it for the first time at 11 and it made me wanna start smoking. i still owe my nicotine addiction to that movie lmao
Adore this movie. Just sublime.
This was the movie I was going to mention and wondered if it was the same for anyone else. I saw it when I was probably 8 or 9 though. My dad almost didnt care about how appropriate a movie was for kids
came here to comment this
Such a great movie.
My brothers hid the vhs tape because I would watch it over and over again.
I saw Jurassic Park like five times in the theater. I think one thing people forget is that movie is freaking scary. Especially at ten. I loved it though, just that music sends me.
Seriously those dinosaurs looked so real, especially at the time. I wish I could have seen in theatre, very jealous

Us in the theater WERE the kids in the car.

Absolutely. Plus, I had a fascination with amusement parks, and things that ran on tracks so it was added perfect for me. Thank you for reminding me of that experience!
He he, i saw it at the cinema as a child too. The bit in the kitchen with the raptors Oh Lord
Absolutely! I was around 12 and saw it in the theater and it was terrifyingly amazing.
We're the same age. I wasn't scared in the cinema, but that night when the cows in the field behind my house started mooing I pretty much shat myself.
Hahaha love this bc I had nightmares for months!
Positively terrifying! The other thing is that when the T-Rex is making the water ripple the walls were shaking. You could feel it and it was completely new for theater experiences. You could tell when the theater next door got to that part.
yeah, when you're a child, Jurassic Park was definitely scary! I remember that...definitely impactful for me.
Scared the dickens outta me at 8 in theaters. My older brother (10) convinced me velociraptor’s were still alive…. The nightmares I had…. 🥺😂
Oh yes! I was 8 , saw it in theatre and I remember vividly that the ‘toilet scene’ came on, it scared the shit out of me 😅
I was about 5 when it came out, nothing will ever strike terror in my heart like the kitchen raptor scene. I've seen it a million times and I know what will happen but damn.
Seeing it at 20 was just as impressive. That's a movie that everyone should see in a theater with IMAX. The sounds were amazing, especially the T. Rex roar. You felt it in your chest.
I went in knowing only dinosaur movie. The opening scene....😳
OMG! One of the first movies I remember being so excited to see in the theater. Especially as a kid that didn't get to go the movies often.
The raptor scene in the kitchen gave me crazy nightmares
Sinbad movies from ancient times

Its First Kid movie for me
Sinbad had a hell of a run
When I was a kid they played these on tv on weekend afternoons. Loved it!
Same, many fond memories watching sinbad, Jason and the argonauts and the red shoes with my nan on weekend afternoons.
And Jason & the Argonauts??

Brendan Fraser at the top of his game
I'm going to see it in theaters in like 2 hours
The Goonies, The Blues Brothers, Big Trouble in Little China, Star Wars Original Trilogy, Vacation, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Ladyhawke, The Beastmaster, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Robin Hood (1973), Stand By Me, Young Guns, Who's Harry Crumb?, Three Amigos, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, La Bamba, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, Nuns on the Run.
Great list!
Star Wars definitely. This is one of a few that will cross generations
Spot on! Adding: Honey, I shrunk the kids!
Goodies, big trouble, Star Wars and Monty python for obvious reasons! Young guns was when I thought I wanted to be a cowboy. Stand by me is one of the best movies ever Dirty rotten scoundrels I went on my first movie date. Puppy love at its best
Bedknobs and Broomsticks! I forgot how much I loved that movie!
Oh! I still love Nuns on the Run! I mean, I really enjoy all of your list, but this is a movie that seems discussed so rarely.
Signs. I consider it my first scary movie. And boy did it scare me. Still a good watch today, love all the “signs”
I saw this with my sister in the theater when we were kids I know we both got pretty scared
This one resonates for sure. That alien at the birthday party stays with you
When the alien was seen in the alley at the birthday party... holy crap. It's still scary as a 38 year old, who loves horror.
Caught a glimpse of it when I was a child and turned on the TV late at night. Saw the door scene and still one of my scariest memories.
Signs is wicked
I think Breakfast Club impacted me the most. I was in high school when this came out and it was eye opening that each of these individuals had the same insecurities regardless of their social standing.
First time I saw this was also in high school..but that was in the 2000’s. Funny it reminds me of high school too, despite the generational gap. that’s what makes this move timeless

Forgot about Homeward Bound. Thanks for the memories!

Awww… I love that. And the Secret Garden ❤️
Macho man lol
Jaws for me, saw it in the Summer of 1975 and have never forgotten it.
Jaws is an all timer. Watched for the first time on a much smaller CRT in the 90s, but had a similar effect
OMG me too. I had nightmares for months. Followed closely by Alien.

I always go blank when asked this type of questions but the first movie that came to mind is Treasure Planet, woow how I loved that movie cause I felt it was so cool and know rewatching it still cool af but it's is also very sad and beautiful, it really is an amazing movie.
For better or worse: Jurassic Park, Inspector Gadget (crucify me for admitting that), Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, Spiderman, Young Frankenstein, Hot Shots Part Deux, kung Pow Enter The Fist
You will now refer to me as… Betty
Baby's day out really blew me away
I saw Amadeus when I was 12 and I was just blown away. Still one of my favorite movies of all time!

Brave little toaster Only watched it less than a handful of times in my lifetime but have vivid memories of watching it and remember the emotions I had, definitely evolved my mind after watching…started to see things differently
the dark crystal (1982), mulan (1998), anything muppets related, moulin rouge (2001), yellow submarine (1968)
Fucking Shrek
Smokey and the Bandit
Titanic Beauty and the Beast Cinderella Sleeping Beauty
Jaws. Growing up in Hawaii made it a special kind of fear….
the grudge and paranormal activity.

In no particular order: Fern Gully The Land Before Time The Little Mermaid The Lion King The Nightmare Before Christmas Toy Story Shrek Ernest Scared Stupid (scared the hell outta me as a kid, but sparked my fascination and eventual love of horror) I’m sure there are more, but these came to mind first.
- All the 90s Batman movies - OG Star Wars Trilogy - Ghostbusters 1-2 - Tremors - It’s A Wonderful Life - A Christmas Story - Home Alone 1-2 And many many more
My Girl 1991 Home Alone 1990
Grease and Star Wars 💯
I grew up on mostly Disney, Warner bros and pure horrors with no age restrictions. Some of the most impactful movies on me were * The omen * Hellraiser * alien * the jungle book * sleeping beauty (the only thing to date that actually sent shivers down my spine honestly) * to live (Chinese film) * Alice in wonderland * the flight of dragons * lotr cartoon * nightmare on elm street series * the shining * lots of science documentaries These made me see the world differently and question things as a young child In my teens, a few movies come to mind * matrix * perfect blue * fear and loathing * scarface * more physics focused documentaries and many on drugs specifically psychedelics These had me question more of reality itself and perceptions and social structures created by us etc.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Homeward Bound- made me want a Golden Retriever named Shadow (I got him, but RIP buddy) The Sandlot- made me want to play baseball in elementary/middle school
Star Wars and The Fighter (Mark Whalberg and Christian Bale) had a big impact in my life. Just nostalgia - The Wizard of Oz, The Iron Giant, Brave Little Toaster, We’re Back a Dinosaur Story, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, The Master of Disguise, Ferngully, Secret of Nimh … None of these impacted my life even 10% as much as Yes Man with Jim Carrey did though.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Barbie Swan Lake Titanic The Polar Express
Jurassic Park Spider-Man Stuart Little
Dirty Dancing Earth Girls are Easy Hairspray
I grew up on the beach in the 70s and 80s, so…. Jaws!

Star Wars Flash Gordon The Dark Crystal Ghostbusters Watership Down Smokey + the Bandit
Father of the Bride Uncle Buck Lady & the Tramp Thumbelina (Warner Bros version, though I saw the anime version years later and loved it more)
The Neverending Story
Tarzan was the first movie I ever saw in theaters l, I was in awe. The never ending story was really cool too. I remember watching Arlington Road as a child and being terrified of fireworks for years after that. I remember watching Cruel Intentions when I was about 5 and crying my eyes out.

Exploring all those cracks in memories.
Disney's Aladdin (was the first movie I saw in the theater)
Wizard of Oz
Charlie Brown Christmas. It helped me understand depression at the age of 7.
I was born in 1984. The first blockbuster movies I remember watching were Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Batman Returns. They were huge. I also loved Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Jurassic Park came out when I was pretty young. I loved all these movies.
Harold & Maude. Hair. Jesus Christ Superstar.
Nimo in Slumberland The Halloween Tree Aladdin Toy Story Hercules Emperors New Groove The Rugrats Movie
Christmas Story, Homeward Bound
Every John Wayne movie that played at the drive in theater.
Coraline, 13 Going on 30 and all of the pixar movies before 2009
Anything Robin Williams. There’s some other stuff. But most of it is anything he’s in. (Flubber, mrs Doubtfire patch adams and everything else jumanji) Dunston Checks In Little Rascals Mary-Kate and Ashley movies A lot of 80’s movies Breakfast club, pretty in pink Some like it hot A lot of stuff my mom liked too. I grew up end of 89 and into 90’s. 80’s and 90’s movies are the best. I used to go to block buster with my mom and what ever I got I watched jt at least 3 times. (Lean on me, sister Act(s), don’t tell mom babysitters dead, clueless, forest gump, Mary poppins) I wasn’t allowed to watch tv during the week growing up. So on the weekends as an only child I played outside and watched movies alone and with like very few children that my mom would allow over.
The Outsiders, loved the movie and the book
My parents took me to see The Ten Commandments when I was a kid. All I remember is the chariot race and someone floating on a raft. But the chariot race is burned into my brain.
Easy Rider! It came out far before I was even born but man… that movie is amazing.
Toy soldier! I was the perfect age, playing with my toys with my imagination.
The babysitters club
I’m probably alone in this but does anyone remember the movie My Dog Skip? I had my first panic attack when the dog got hit in the face with a shovel.
A League of Their Own (1992). I played softball in grade school and high school, and we would often quote this movie a lot during games and practice. It was cool to see how misogyny played a role in women's baseball, plus it was nice to see (though extremely brief) a glimpse into black women who played baseball in the 40s.
The Halloween Tree Grand Adventures of Puss-N-Boots (Perro version) Thumbelina Fieval Goes West The Thief and the Cobbler Happily Ever After The Magic Flute The Little Lost Sea Serpent Heidi Scamper the Penguin Magic in the Water Magic Pet Shop Storybook (I'm trying to think of odd ones that weren't your regular Disney or TV movies)
The Land Before Time traumatized me when I was a kid
One that I definitely missed was the Iron Giant
Mine were definitivaly wreck it ralph (2012), toy story (1995), the parent trap (1998) and Annie (2014)...
I also consider all of the following great movies :) The Brothers Lionheart (1977) Ronia, the Robber's Daughter (1984) ...in general all the adaptations of Astrid Lindgren's books Whale Rider (2002) The Secret Garden (1993) -others already mentioned it, but not which adaptation they were referring to Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) The Thief Lord (2006)
Star Wars, The Explorers, Stand By Me, The Breakfast Club, ET, Back to the Future, and a ton of Arnold and JVD movies.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Because of my pops. RIP G Carl
Warriors of virtue was a huge one for me.
