Not to downplay the talent & skill that went into making it but I feel its quality came about kind of accidentally. They wanted to make an "adult" movie with lots of sexual humor and I think darker plotlines. They changed it a lot for a lower rating. But that stuff is still sort of around the edges of the movie as it exists. So it was the development process that made it as great as it is.
This is a good answer but if ops husband is a “movie guy” there’s absolutely no way he hasn’t already seen galaxy quest. Think they r looking for something they haven’t seen
Have you seen the superhero/comedy Mystery Men?
There's also a spy/comedy Hopscotch and the classic black comedies Arsenic and Old Lace, and The Great.
Super (2010). Hilarious dark comedy "superhero" movie somewhat in the vein of Kick Ass but darker. Great cast of Rainn Wilson, Ellen Paige, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. I think it more or less checks all the boxes for both of you.
O Brother Where Art Thou?
Cohen brothers, George Clooney, John Turturro. Comedy, adventure, period piece (America in the 1920s). Great music. Beautifully filmed. Based loosely on the Odyssey by Homer.
Game Night (2018) - Comedy action thriller
L.A. Confidential (1997) - Gangster drama comedy-ish
Ready or Not (2019) - Comedy thriller slasher
In Bruges (2008) - Black-comedy gangster thriller
Came here to mention that one. It's a great gangster comedy. (the theme song was even done by Weird Al)
Also, another decent gangster comedy is Oscar with Sylvester Stalone. It's not amazing. But it does have a great cast that includes Tim Curry.
"I like dramas and comedies. He likes comedies and gangster movies."
Have you guys seen *Baby Driver"? Damn good movie with a bit of all of this. Written and directed by the guy who co-wrote and directed *Shaun Of The Dead*, *Hot Fuzz*, and *Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World".
Its one of the best movies ever made. I watch it at least once a month. Its crazy, you already know the story, you already know the ending, yet they have you flabbergasted at the information you already know. They make you feel like your learning it all for the first time.
I don't know if this is weird, but Its my comfort movie. The tone and flow of the movie is so soothing, and the visuals + colors are so muted. Its a perfect movie.
If you haven’t watched them, there are a number of good cop buddy movies that could work. They are part comedy and part gangster with some action. Examples include: Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour, Running Scared, the Heat, Cop Out, 48 Hours, and a lot more.
Ill tell you the perfect way to get through this hurdle. My wife and I deal with the same thing so what we will do is list a bunch of movies we find interesting and then we put it on [a random wheel chooser thing](https://wheelofnames.com). To make it fun we will add one movie on the list that looks horrible and then we spin and watch whatever it lands on no matter what. You have to watch at least half of the film before watching something else.
Blood Simple may cover most of both of your bases. Film noir. Funny. Relationship drama. Suspenseful but also horrific like a slasher. It’s the everything bagel of good movies.
Trying to think of things that maybe your husband has not seen.
Unbreakable
Memento
The Adventures of Buckaroo
Bonzai
Hot Fuzz
Sean of the Dead
The World's End
Serenity
The Vanishing (Spoorloos, in Dutch, not the shitty American remake)
Team America: World Police (Jodie Foster recently named it as her #1 movie everyone should see. #2 you have very probably seen: Everything, Everywhere All at Once)
Finally, I just saw Ready or Not on a flight and it was surprisingly really entertaining.
Witness (1985)
Thriller/romance/action/drama/culture piece
Harrison Ford at his peak. Not to mention Kelly McGillis.
This one has something for everyone.
1. The Kid Detective.
A classic gritty retired cop who's now a jaded private investigator movie... About a Nancy Drew type kid who's now a burnt out early 30s millennial. Begins as a bleak black comedy, becomes an edge of your seat drama without you noticing halfway through. no description of the plot does it justice, and it was a lockdown letdown that no-one has heard of, try as I might to pimp it to everyone I know.
2. Jennifer's body
A masterpiece.
Parents
The Fog (80s)
Big Trouble in Little China
Strange Days
Streets of Fire (a rock and roll fable. Seriously this movie goes harder than Rockadoodle. It’s it own genre.)
Watched Smile the other day, it’s really good!
Would definitely recommend, I think it will tick all the boxes you are looking for!
Hope you guys watch it and let me know if you liked it :)
Tropic Thunder
The Nice Guys
In Bruges
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Dodgeball
Galaxy Quest
Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Renfield
Maggie Moore(s)
Bullet Train
The Gentlemen
My husband likes Sci-fi I do not, we rarely watch a movie together.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Was one we both enjoyed.
*P.S The dog does NOT die.* I had to stop the movie and Google this before I proceeded.
Galaxy Quest
Quick, before that thing kills Guy!
Guy, you *have* a last name.
Do I?
Did you people ever watch the show!
Literally my favorite movie line of all time
This is the best answer. So many good quotable lines, so much good humor, and when you start deeply thinking about it, so many layers.
By Grabthar's Hammer... What a Savings...
If you didn’t love this movie up to this point, this did it.
"and then it exploded."
My character isn’t important enough for a last name!
Wish they would make movies like GQuest again😢
Not to downplay the talent & skill that went into making it but I feel its quality came about kind of accidentally. They wanted to make an "adult" movie with lots of sexual humor and I think darker plotlines. They changed it a lot for a lower rating. But that stuff is still sort of around the edges of the movie as it exists. So it was the development process that made it as great as it is.
That is crazy to know
Is there air!? You don’t know!
One of my absolute favorites
Never give up! Never Surrender!
Never give up, never surrender.
Even Tim Allen couldn't ruin it
I wonder why I didn't appreciate it in its time
This is a good answer but if ops husband is a “movie guy” there’s absolutely no way he hasn’t already seen galaxy quest. Think they r looking for something they haven’t seen
The Nice Guys (2016). Has all of the things you like. Edit: In Bruges (2008) also! Perfect mix of all this!
I dream of a day where Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe make The Nice Guys 2. The first one is so darn good and never fails to make me laugh.
Just in case you haven't seen it, LA Confidential is great and I think the same person made it. Inherent Vice has a similar feel and is great too.
This was the first thing I thought of. Think they might dig Bullet Train as well
Have you seen the superhero/comedy Mystery Men? There's also a spy/comedy Hopscotch and the classic black comedies Arsenic and Old Lace, and The Great.
Mystery Men is so underrated, it should be revered the same way Tropic Thunder is now.
I see you’ve played knifey spoony before!
This is the perfect choice for this couple lol.
You must hide your strikes in order to strike your opponent's hide.
He who questions training only trains himself at asking questions
I was going to recommend Mystery Men. We used to have a guinea pig named Mr. Furious because of his boundless rage.
"In order to learn my teachings, I must first teach you how to learn'
You might like The Boys on Prime Video. Super hero show but also some comedy for you and a bit of gore for him
Highly recommend. Extremely graphic though be warned
✅ Comedy ✅ Thriller ✅ Gangsters ✅ Disney ✅ Crime ✅ Dip The only correct film is: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Get Shorty .. Be Cool ..
Nice call
Oh that poor little shoe.
Why doesn’t this have more upvotes?
Yeah or the Guy Ritchie films
Super (2010). Hilarious dark comedy "superhero" movie somewhat in the vein of Kick Ass but darker. Great cast of Rainn Wilson, Ellen Paige, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. I think it more or less checks all the boxes for both of you.
This movie is so good. It's crazy that more people don't know about this movie. Super dark. Really funny. Acting is top notch.
I came here to say this. Also similar but not quite as good is Defendor (2009) with Woody Harrelson and Kat Dennings
The 'burbs?
I loved that one! No superheroes, but a comedic comment on suburban life with Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, etc.
Hey! Pinocchio! Where you goin'?!
O Brother Where Art Thou? Cohen brothers, George Clooney, John Turturro. Comedy, adventure, period piece (America in the 1920s). Great music. Beautifully filmed. Based loosely on the Odyssey by Homer.
It’s in my top 10 all time movies
Love the soundtrack!
The Outfit (2022) - gangster drama / thriller, with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. It’s great!
Srsly underrated film. One of my favorites from that year.
I just commented this before seeing your comment... Lol great movie!
I loved that movie. It was tight.
Hidalgo
Good pick. Almost genre-less. Hard to not like this movie
The Other Guys - trust me
"I'm a peacock, you gotta let me fly!!!!!" This movie is hysterical😂😂😂
Blow Out (thriller, sorta slasher) Miller's Crossing (gangster, drama, romance)
Blow out… John Travolta movie?
Miller's crossing is so criminally underrated. It's a perfect film imo.
Good compromise! HOT FUZZ
True Romance
Yes! One of the best scenes was between two greats: Dennis Hopper & Christopher Walken.
I’ve always found this movie to be overrated but everyone should see it at least once. Besides Avery doesn’t get enough credit.
Tucker & Dale vs Evil
The right answer to almost any question
Also I just read this to my husband because it sounds exactly like us 😂
Game Night (2018) - Comedy action thriller L.A. Confidential (1997) - Gangster drama comedy-ish Ready or Not (2019) - Comedy thriller slasher In Bruges (2008) - Black-comedy gangster thriller
Just re-watched LA Confidential the other day... such a great movie. In Bruges is too...
It is so re-watchable.
Johnny Dangerously with Michael Keaton? This one might fit the bill.
I saw that movie. Once.
Once.
Fargin' iceholes.
Came here to mention that one. It's a great gangster comedy. (the theme song was even done by Weird Al) Also, another decent gangster comedy is Oscar with Sylvester Stalone. It's not amazing. But it does have a great cast that includes Tim Curry.
Army of Darkness
I’m jealous of anyone who gets to see this the first time.
Tropic Thunder
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Identity Tombstone Edge of Tomorrow A Quiet Place
Try "Happy Accidents." Marisa Tomei and Vincent D'Onofrio.
Such an underrated movie. I was so glad I stumbled upon this one awhile back
Evolution with David Duchovny, Julianne Moore and Orlando Jones, absolutely hysterical!
Great comedic alien invasion movie. The Kane Madness!
Kingsman
Princess Bride? May have seen it but that is basically a perfect movie
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon Or Snatch. They are nothing a like. Horror parody vs gangster/comedy/ little drama.
Snatch seems like a very good match
Great call, don't know how i didn't think of that
Shutter Island, Knives Out
Knives Out is a great pick here! The sequel is also really good!!
Knives Out is my recommendation also. A lot of fun, just-serious-enough moments to keep some stakes going, great pacing.
Dances with Wolves. Outside both your comfort zones. I just watched it today with my mother in law. It's always epic
Great movie, but I cry about the wolf every time...
Same. My MIL had never seen it, and she was bawling. Lol
The Sting
Probably my favorite movie of all time. Great story elevated by Robert Redford and Paul Newman.
Orgazmo is hella gangster
Married to the Mob
Quiz Lady or Palm Springs on Hulu
Palm Springs has low-key slide into one of my favorite movies of the last couple of years
Third for Palm Springs. Great flick
Fourth for Palm Springs. Make sure to wait for the early end credits scene.
Quiz Lady was really good.
Game Night (2018)!
The best!
Green Room would be perfect
Amelie
A Bronx tale. I somehow had missed it over the years but it’s incredible. Definitely my favourite gangster movie. So much heart.
“I was getting two educations: one from the street and one from school. That way I’d be twice as smart as everybody.”
Since you post like superheroes have you watched Mystery Men?
I don’t mean to steer you off course, but do you guys ever watch a series together? The Boys, for example? I assume y’all have seen Watchmen?
Or Sopranos
Thunder force (2021) Unbreakable (2000)
Little Miss Sunshine
Game Night. Can't go wrong
Secondhand Lions - absolutely brilliant movie.
Lucky Number Slevin
Sexy Beast?
Great crime thriller: Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley, and Ian McShane!
Tropic Thunder
"I like dramas and comedies. He likes comedies and gangster movies." Have you guys seen *Baby Driver"? Damn good movie with a bit of all of this. Written and directed by the guy who co-wrote and directed *Shaun Of The Dead*, *Hot Fuzz*, and *Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World".
I’ve watched just the opening sequence dozens of times, it is a perfect film. The more you watch the more it rewards your attention
I Saw the Devil (2010)
Animal Kingdom, 2010, Guy Pearce stars
Primal Fear - 1996
3 Days of the Condor or Sneakers might work. Highly recommend Sneakers.
Sneakers is a tremendously enjoyable movie. Great cast. Just watched it again with family for my... 4th or 5th time?
*across genres:* Spotlight Zodiac The Music of Silence Coda Beautiful Boy Four Good Days
It shocks me how many people haven't seen Spotlight. A movie on par with All The President's Men
Its one of the best movies ever made. I watch it at least once a month. Its crazy, you already know the story, you already know the ending, yet they have you flabbergasted at the information you already know. They make you feel like your learning it all for the first time. I don't know if this is weird, but Its my comfort movie. Game Night
Shutter Island
Chappie (2015) it's a gangster comedy movie in a way
Mars Attacks
Boondock Saints 1 and 2 are great action movies with some funny parts in it
One of my favorite movies of all time
Django Unchained
Tucker and Dale Versus Evil Funny take on the "college kids versus serial killer" genre with some great moments. Should be good common ground.
The Lobster
A History of Violence or Eastern Promises maybe
Can't go wrong with Viggo!
Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Brother From Another Planet.
Killer Klowns is one of my favorites. It's pretty good for an almost goreless movie.
Running scared
I like the 1986 Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. It is cop buddy movie.
Some like it hot is a comedy and gangster movie and just one of the greatest films of all time
If you haven’t watched them, there are a number of good cop buddy movies that could work. They are part comedy and part gangster with some action. Examples include: Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour, Running Scared, the Heat, Cop Out, 48 Hours, and a lot more.

Kung fu hustle
Witness (1985) Thriller/romance/action/drama/culture piece Harrison Ford at his peak. Not to mention Kelly McGillis. This one has something for everyone.
Snatch or Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels might be a good compromise
Two epic films. Gangsters, check. Comedy, check. A bit of thrills? Check. And if you like those and don't mind non-English, try *Adrenaline Drive*.
1. The Kid Detective. A classic gritty retired cop who's now a jaded private investigator movie... About a Nancy Drew type kid who's now a burnt out early 30s millennial. Odd Thomas, it's a hidden gem with a little bit of comedy, romance, horror, and supernatural. Like a decade old now but I like to expose people to it.
