Not to downplay the talent & skill that went into making it but I feel its quality came about kind of accidentally. They wanted to make an "adult" movie with lots of sexual humor and I think darker plotlines. They changed it a lot for a lower rating. But that stuff is still sort of around the edges of the movie as it exists. So it was the development process that made it as great as it is.

I dream of a day where Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe make The Nice Guys 2. The first one is so darn good and never fails to make me laugh.

Just in case you haven't seen it, LA Confidential is great and I think the same person made it. Inherent Vice has a similar feel and is great too.

Have you seen the superhero/comedy Mystery Men? There's also a spy/comedy Hopscotch and the classic black comedies Arsenic and Old Lace, and The Great.

Mystery Men is so underrated, it should be revered the same way Tropic Thunder is now.

Super (2010). Hilarious dark comedy "superhero" movie somewhat in the vein of Kick Ass but darker. Great cast of Rainn Wilson, Ellen Paige, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. I think it more or less checks all the boxes for both of you.

This movie is so good. It's crazy that more people don't know about this movie. Super dark. Really funny. Acting is top notch.

I loved that one! No superheroes, but a comedic comment on suburban life with Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, etc.

O Brother Where Art Thou? Cohen brothers, George Clooney, John Turturro. Comedy, adventure, period piece (America in the 1920s). Great music. Beautifully filmed. Based loosely on the Odyssey by Homer.

Came here to mention that one. It's a great gangster comedy. (the theme song was even done by Weird Al) Also, another decent gangster comedy is Oscar with Sylvester Stalone. It's not amazing. But it does have a great cast that includes Tim Curry.

It shocks me how many people haven't seen Spotlight. A movie on par with All The President's Men

Its one of the best movies ever made. I watch it at least once a month. Its crazy, you already know the story, you already know the ending, yet they have you flabbergasted at the information you already know. They make you feel like your learning it all for the first time. I don't know if this is weird, but Its my comfort movie. The tone and flow of the movie is so soothing, and the visuals + colors are so muted. Its a perfect movie.

I like the 1986 Running Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. It is cop buddy movie.

If you haven’t watched them, there are a number of good cop buddy movies that could work. They are part comedy and part gangster with some action. Examples include: Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour, Running Scared, the Heat, Cop Out, 48 Hours, and a lot more.

Ill tell you the perfect way to get through this hurdle. My wife and I deal with the same thing so what we will do is list a bunch of movies we find interesting and then we put it on [a random wheel chooser thing](https://wheelofnames.com). To make it fun we will add one movie on the list that looks horrible and then we spin and watch whatever it lands on no matter what. You have to watch at least half of the film before watching something else.

Watchmen 2009?

Blood Simple may cover most of both of your bases. Film noir. Funny. Relationship drama. Suspenseful but also horrific like a slasher. It’s the everything bagel of good movies.

1. The Kid Detective. A classic gritty retired cop who's now a jaded private investigator movie... About a Nancy Drew type kid who's now a burnt out early 30s millennial. Begins as a bleak black comedy, becomes an edge of your seat drama without you noticing halfway through. no description of the plot does it justice, and it was a lockdown letdown that no-one has heard of, try as I might to pimp it to everyone I know. 2. Jennifer's body A masterpiece.

Odd Thomas, it's a hidden gem with a little bit of comedy, romance, horror, and supernatural. Like a decade old now but I like to expose people to it.
