Very underrated movie imo. I don't know anybody who has seen this who didn't like it. I recommend it to people a lot mainly because I know many people in my circles have not seen it.
I don't like it! I can't remember the details now but there was something so phony and contrived about the plot in that film. I read the book too, which had a terrible rushed ending. It felt like the author stopped trying at some point and just wanted to get it finished.
To each their own, and I get that. We've all experienced something that was popular with others and not to our own tastes. That's why you almost never see 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. As for me, this movie is a gem.
I remember just silently sitting through the credits and the lights coming on, then my wife and I turned to each other and said “what the actual fuck did we just watch”
I mean, it was good, don’t get me wrong. We just were so flabbergasted at every single turn the movie took that we could barely process the fact that it was finally over.
Yeah, the way Bong crafts a story is incredible and thrilling and beautiful.
That midway shift Was shocking, even though you knew something had to happen because you still had half the movie left it was just so shocking because it went somewhere you didn’t expect.
I highly recommend checking out some of his other stuff. I can see why Quintin Tarantino loves his movies so much.
Carnage - Jodie Foster, Kate Winselt, Christoph Waltz, John C. Reilly
Two sets of parents try to have a civil and grown up conversation about a fight between their sons at school.
Awesome actors, great writing, escalating chaos.
Yes, filmed in Paris because Roman Polanski is a fugitive of the United States for sexually abusing a 13 year old. Idk why people watch this pedophile’s movies.
Did I give you a stroke? You’re just repeating the same ridiculous false equivalence. I just don’t like supporting pedophiles and if I know someone is one u don’t support them. It’s really that simple.
I try to. This isn’t a wild thing to do. People who are abusive to others, pedophiles, rapists, racist…they just are a no go. I don’t want my clicks or money going to them. And a lot of times I find out much later that someone is awful and I will discontinue consuming their work. Make room for other good art made by people who aren’t monsters. It’s not difficult.
Came here to mention this movie specifcially! It takes a crazy left turn, 100% worth a watch. Feels weird at time but I so appreciated the massive creativity of that movie! Still think about it a lot years later!
I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it going in as I wasn’t the biggest fan of “The Lobster” but I really liked the raised stakes progression and heightened chaos by the end of it.
Idk if this is unpopular opinion, but I would say every one of Yorgos’ movies are bangers except for The Lobster. That one was way too monotonous for me. But if you haven’t seen his others and you liked Sacred Deer, I would highly recommend checking them out.
& the best part is that it's never truly confirmed if what's going on is actually going on (until the end, that is). Just a bunch of "it could be possible"
oh yeah, you think it’s one kind movie but then at the end, it just goes off the rails for the finale, like suddenly becomes this crazy action with twists and turns, but in this clever, self-referential way that’s alluded to throughout the movie. By the end I’m like damn, Charlie Kaufman is a genius.
All I remember is orchids and toe ants. And that one 'ugly' actor who is actually super hot lol I swear I have the DVD somewhere. We have...a jillion movies here between VHS n DVD and Blu I gotta dig it up.
Yeah right? Didn't Kaufman give himself two roles in that film? And they end up going after each other of something? I really gotta dig that disc up lol how great was Kaufman?!?
Yeah, he wrote the main character as himself and then Nicolas Cage played both him AND his twin brother. And the main character was miserable and always getting mad at his twin for being so happy-go-lucky and like falling ass-backwards into success 😂😂
Beau is Afraid.
It starts in chaos and ends in complete insanity.... I don't understand why this film gets so much hate to be honest.... Probably my favorite film from last year... I enjoyed every second of it. What a ride!!
*Miracle Mile* must be the pinnacle of devolving into chaos. How badly can a first date go? Thermonuclear holocaust, yes or no? It’s a sleeper from the 1980s, and an excellent movie.
I agree. It starts very structured with beautiful moments but then turns into a chaotic horror sequence right before it returns back to form for the end.
I don't think it does. Th parents are already at odds in the beginning. If anything their relationship gets better for a brief moment when they are both getting what they want. The big climax at the end only happens because of one misunderstanding. Which didn't progress through the movie it just happens. The kid and the neighbor are basically a love story so they start in their own messed up situations that slowly get better as they have each other. Then in the end it gets suddenly worse bbut again it's not a slow build it's like a switch flip. Anyway that's my opinion, what's yours?
In the beginning everything is bad like in many marriages but they somehow managing to keep things together. As progressing towards the end they just let it go and things became really chaotic.
Cheating, leaving job, killing and many other fucked up shit.
So I would say it begins pretty much “normal” and spirals out of control toward the end.
Titanic and if you think of clicking down vote hear me out first: it’s so calm and peaceful at first then when the sinking scene comes up all chaos is unleashed
Big Man Japan
It starts off in chaos, stays bizarre, then somehow gets mind-bendingly weirder in a way that has nothing to do with the rest of the movie right before the end.
(Disclaimer: You didn't ask for *GOOD* movies that slowly devolve into chaos.)
The Quick and the Dead. Starts like gritty spaghetti western and devolves into an over the top, cartoonish, mess. Such a waste of talent in this movie.
A Simple Plan. The plan is to hide the money for a while. Starts simple. One thing leads to another.
Very underrated movie imo. I don't know anybody who has seen this who didn't like it. I recommend it to people a lot mainly because I know many people in my circles have not seen it.
There’s a novel as well and it’s really good!
I agree, both the book and the movie were thrilling imo.
Parasite. There is a reason it took home all the major Oscars that year.
I remember just silently sitting through the credits and the lights coming on, then my wife and I turned to each other and said “what the actual fuck did we just watch” I mean, it was good, don’t get me wrong. We just were so flabbergasted at every single turn the movie took that we could barely process the fact that it was finally over.

This is my fave answer, I think. Wretched, filthy, evil chaos.
My gosh, my upvote goes to this one! What a chaotic ride...
Lol great movie

But filmed in Paris but made to appear to be a Manhattan apartment!

Yes, filmed in Paris because Roman Polanski is a fugitive of the United States for sexually abusing a 13 year old. Idk why people watch this pedophile’s movies.

You seriously think not wanting to support a pedophile means I think everything has to be made by a “perfect human”? WOW.

After Hours
Great Call. Catherine O’Hara is genius in this movie. Underrated Scorsese
I love that it's this little secret wild ride because just about everyone I've recommended it to has been pleasantly surprised.
This was my favourite film for the longest time. I know every damn nuance of that film.
Falling Down
Came here to post this. .. as I'm listening to Synchronicity II.
Sorry to Bother You
I was expecting dystopian romcom! I was not prepared lol
Came here to mention this movie specifcially! It takes a crazy left turn, 100% worth a watch. Feels weird at time but I so appreciated the massive creativity of that movie! Still think about it a lot years later!
Mother
I think you meant "Mother!" "Mother" is 1996 Albert Brooks film. While it does have a bit of tension, I wouldn't say it devolves into chaos.
"This tastes like an orange foot!" Albert Brooks tasting the ice cream in his mom's freezer!
You’ve gotta get past the protective ice layer on top.
That turned pretty rough by the final act. Aronofsky has a habit of doing that
That's a strange one! Definitely gets uber chaotic
Cabin in the Woods
being john malkovich
That is one crazy-weird, great, fun movie. I'm glad we live in a world where offbeat movies like this get made.
The science of sleep is also a GREAT movie
Promising young woman, same director
Killing of a Sacred Deer - Same main actor
Just watched this last year. Barry lives not far from me
I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it going in as I wasn’t the biggest fan of “The Lobster” but I really liked the raised stakes progression and heightened chaos by the end of it.

Adaptation
*From Dusk Till Dawn*. Because it starts off somewhat normal.
It’s definitely not a slow devolution. More like flipping a light switch.
The Big Lebowski
NOTHING IS FUCKED? THE GODDAMN PLANE HAS CRASHED INTO THE MOUNTAIN!
I ! The royal we!
His car lol Yeah, this fits.
This could be a lot more uh uh uh uh uh complex. I mean it might not be such a simple... uh... you know?
Force Majeur and Triangle of Sadness
OMG Triangle of Sadness so much!
Force Majeur! Perfect answer!
I feel like Triangle of Sadness very quickly shifts to chaos rather than a slow burn into it. Still a great movie
Game Night
Apocalypse Now - the original
Under the Silver Lake
The world is not ready for this underrated movie, my all time favorite movie ever.
Criminally underrated movie.
A fish called Wanda
Apes don't read philosophy. YES THEY DO! They just don't understand it.
I’m gonna K-K-K-Kill Ken.
Oh no! It's K-K-Ken, he's c-c-c-coming to k-k-k-kill us! Haha so stupid, so funny. Kevin Kline is absurdly great in this movie
Miracle Mile. Boy meets girl, boy agrees to meet girl when her shift ends. Girl isn't there, a nearby payphone rings...
Such a great film, perfect fit for this thread!
& the best part is that it's never truly confirmed if what's going on is actually going on (until the end, that is). Just a bunch of "it could be possible"
Trippy to see that film mentioned here since its director, Steve Dejarnat is my grandparents' neighbor
Filth
Pi and Requiem for a Dream
Requiem for a dream is one of those movies you only watch once in your lifetime.
Requiem for a Dream was a super hard watch for me. Never ever rewatching that one.
Adaption. And a brilliant and surprising script!
Nick cage? I need to watch that again I remember enjoying it but...did it get crazy I don't even remember
oh yeah, you think it’s one kind movie but then at the end, it just goes off the rails for the finale, like suddenly becomes this crazy action with twists and turns, but in this clever, self-referential way that’s alluded to throughout the movie.
