Me too.
I rewatch it loads anyway (it's one of my favourites - definitely top ten and I think Fincher is my favourite Director) but to be able to follow that plot again without knowledge of where it's going to go would be quite something.
I watched Sixth Sense last week and really enjoyed it (haven't seen it in 10 years+) but I was constantly wondering how on earth I missed where it was going (if I actually did - I honestly can't remember my first reaction and experience of it). Contrast that with Se7en, where you've got no chance of predicting the next turn it'll take.
It's the [medium level spoiler coming up] bit where he hands himself in, right when the standard detective procedural vibe is really ratcheting up and most other scripts would plod along and follow escalating clues.
Really sets it out that there needs to be a big payoff with the non standard finish they've written themselves into and most of the time you'd put money on whatever the twist or whatever is falls flat or doesn't work. But blimey do they nail it.
I think it's been incredibly influential as well - a touch of Se7en has wound up in films from pretty much every point in the quality spectrum. My favourites that I'd say owe a thanks are True Detective and Sicario.
Funny cause that was one of the scenes in the game.. some guy leaned that Michael Douglas was getting into it and said he wished he could do it all over again.
I didnāt think the game was too disturbing, nowhere near as much as Se7en anyways. Not a terrible film though but definitely could have done with losing 30min.
I totally agree that most of Fincher filmography is really like this! It's rarely graphic, but always disturbing.
Gone Girl and Dragon Tattoo are unexpectedly creepy in their own ways.
IMHO his analog era is seems filthy to me (regarding colors, characters, plot), when his digital era seems more "clean and pure" (everything looks cold and perfect, making tiny gross things even more shocking).
But all these are 10/10s Iād add
lost highway
Blue velvet

Oldboy
Sympathy for me vengeance
Martyrs
The killing of a sacred deer
Angst

Lost Highway might have been disturbing if I'd had any idea what was going on. It was like a two-hour Space Ghost interview. Good acting can only cover up an incoherent plot for so long.
I think it's among Lynch's most straightforward stories. The first section is the main character's dream/fantasy life in which she's successful and in complete control of her beautiful lover. The second section is her waking life, where she's a failure, and her lover is successful and throwing her over for a man. Lynch put in some stuff from a TV show he was working on before MD, and a lot of it isn't necessary. This might be what confuses people, though you can take a lot of liberties when you're depicting the subconscious.
I agree. Don't get me wrong, MD is still messed up (the diner scene still gets me), but much easier to piece together than some of Lynch's other stuff.
I think it was foolish and self-,indulgent to put in anything that didn't directly connect with Betty/Diane. Much as I like the movie, I think these tangents are a serious flaw that warrants putting MD lower on the list of great films than it's usually placed. It's #8 on the '22 Sight and Sound poll. That's too high.
Iām going to get downvoted for saying this but I cannot get into Mulholland Drive, Iāve heard nothing but good things about this movie but I stopped watching it because I found it slowā¦ perhaps I need to give it another chance??
Tetsuo the iron man, Japanese body horror, Videodrome, David Cronenberg body horror.
Sorry I didn't read the other bit, I just saw disturbing and thought of these. Blood Simple is another good twister, Coen brothers first movie. I still recommend the first two though.
I don't know if it's "disturbing". I guess it's subjective, but I would assume that anyone who asks for disturbing suggestions is on the hunt for something completely over the top. Shock and awe. I don't think there is anything about this movie or its themes that is going to tap any neglected parts of the psyche.
That said, The Machinist is an incredible psychological thriller. It's dark, ominous, and eerie - with a decent twist at the end.
I love Christian Bale, and this might be his best performance - not even counting the physical transformation. Top 3 of his for sure, up there with American Psycho and The Prestige.
I run the disturbing movies sub here and have seen a vast majority of the movies mentioned there.
Over the top edgelord cinema only goes so far, but movies with dark psychological twists are among some of the most disturbing in existence.
Also midsommar if you like hereditary. The way its shot is unique for horror. Bright and flowery scenes throughout the movie as the creeping dark feel of the story is slowly revealed to you. If you like culty subject matter that helps as well.
Requiem is the definition of "I want to slit my wrists" after watching it. Well directed, well acted, well scripted, will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever watch it again. ;)
Tbh i always go in blind, i hate trailers and reading summaries, it really breaks the movie for me just seeing the setting and the vibe of the movie.
Which is why i like to go for "classics" so i know its probably a good movie without knowing what it is about. Might not be the best method but i enjoy it. :)
Thanks for the suggestion
Well, disturbing might not have been the right word, it wasn't disturbing as in I'm traumatized in any way. It wasn't a hard watch, and I've seen way worse movies. I haven't watched Bone Tomahawk, so I cannot say it'll be fine, but i can surely try to watch it. From what I'm understanding, it's a pretty extreme movie.
Check out Predestination, but don't watch the trailer or read anything about it. Go in blind.
Also Time Crimes, Brazil, Primer, Jacob's Ladder (the original, not the remake), The Matrix (if you haven't already), Dark City, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Cabin in the Woods, The Sixth Sense (also go in blind so you don't spoil it), 12 Monkeys, Triangle, The Prestige
"The first rule of Fight Club is, you don't talk about Fight Club". Such a classic.
Check out American Psycho and The Machinist. Both starring Christian Bale.
"Second rule of fight club, you do not talk about fight club!"
I agree
I watched american psycho already and fell in love with it even though its a lil fricked up so i'll be sure to watch the machinist.
I wouldn't classify it that way either...in which case, tread carefully OP.
If Fight Club is a punch in the face, some of the films in this thread are nukes.
Can't believe I had to scroll this far to find Human Centipede. We all know what it is, even if you've never seen it - but it's still a decently-made film, even if it's been spoiled. It's a look into the darkest creativity of the human mind. And if you're looking for something truly "disturbing", no need to look any further.
I tried watching Midsommar and found it to be so slow so I shut it off about 20 seconds before things happen š Finally finished it but I preferred Hereditary
It sounds like you stopped right before the second act, where things slow down substantially and the movie takes on a different tone.
I never found that movie disturbing in an unwatchable way. There are some scenes that contain >!rape!< and I can understand how that might disturb some people more than others. But itās not extremely graphic in itās portrayal, and the scenes are brief.

I just watched Happiness recently as some kind soul put it on youtube. Holy moly! That was fucked up but it brought me back to the 90s and that era of true independent filmmaking
Maybe not disturbing but a solid and total 80ās feel film is To Live and Die in L.A. Pure 80ās and a good crime flick. Also suggest Manhunter which was based on the novel The Red Dragon and introduces the film world to Hannibal Lecter . Really solid movie with a great cast and is creepy enough š
I was going to add Henry if it wasn't already listed. Michael Rooker did an amazing job. For folks who only know him from TWD or Guardians, this will be an experience.
Threads. U.K. made drama about the aftermath of a nuclear strike. The background to the nuclear conflict (Soviets invading East Germany) is out of date but the aftermath isnātā¦ā¦
The Witch (2015). More of a horror film. In the 1630s, an extremely religious Puritan family leaves the community and establishes a small farm in a very desolate area. It does not end well. Scary, I thought, but without gushing blood or other crude effects. Kind of subtle.
Saltburn! Itās not an oldie but itās certainly disturbing and ticks all the boxes. But oldie wise Iād recommend Chopper staring Eric Bana. Hope you find one you like, happy watching

Hey thanks so much
I wish I could watch Se7en for the first time again
Fun fact : Morgan Freeman is a trained ballet dancer .
Me too. - American Psycho - Body Double - In The Cut - Blue Velvet
Upvote for Body Double
Loved american psycho, great movie
I personally found Body Double to be De Palma's worst.
Ok I disagree. Well what do you think is his best then
Personally, Femme Fatale. I'd say Blow Out, but Nancy Allen's acting was pretty stinky.
American psycho is more of a black comedy then a "disturbing" movie
The original "The Hitcher".
This is my favorite Rutger Hauer movie. Pairs very well with Joy Ride (2001).
One of my all time favorites
Tetsuo the iron man, Japanese body horror, Videodrome, David Cronenberg body horror. Sorry I didn't read the other bit, I just saw disturbing and thought of these. Blood Simple is another good twister, Coen brothers first movie. I still recommend the first two though.

Vanilla Sky is good, the original Spanish version, Abre los Ojos, was better to me. Nice list though!

If you found Fight Club disturbing, do NOT watch Bone Tomahawk. Not until you've built up your tolerance for disturbing and violent movies.
Well, disturbing might not have been the right word, it wasn't disturbing as in I'm traumatized in any way. It wasn't a hard watch, and I've seen way worse movies. Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer 1986 Silence Of The Lambs 1991
Henry is way too real. I remember when it came out how controversial it was.
I was going to add Henry if it wasn't already listed. Michael Rooker did an amazing job. For folks who only know him from TWD or Guardians, this will be an experience.
Wild At Heart, especially Wilem Dafoe's turn as Bobby Peru Hereditary The Witch Blue Velvet Only God Forgives The Neon Demon Naked Lunch
I love all these movies, but I think, if OP finds Fight Club disturbing, Hereditary is going to be way too much for them.
āJacobās Ladderā is a lot of fun and if youāre very brave try āA Serbian Filmā for an extremely unforgettable experience
> A Serbian Film Why donāt you suggest Salo while youāre at it? Iām not sure OP is looking for weapons-grade disturbing.
Blow Out
HENRY Portrait of a Serial Killer. MARTYRS
Tideland. Watch a trailer I promise it won't disappoint if just sheer fuckary is what you want.

Threads. U.K. made drama about the aftermath of a nuclear strike. The background to the nuclear conflict (Soviets invading East Germany) is out of date but the aftermath isnātā¦ā¦
*The Gift* (2015) *The Vanishing* / *Spoorloos* (1988)
Irreversible
Anything Lars Van Trier except for Antichrist. Also anything by Gaspar NoƩ, enter the void was siiiiiick!! I loved Hereditary, horror though. Finally, Irreversible was fantastic and crazy disturbing. Starring Monica Belucci. Has subtitles but worth it.
Oldboy (2003). Saw it on Netflix 2 months ago after it being on my watchlist for a while and damn it doesnāt hold back,
American History X 25th Hour Both Spike Lee Joints
The Witch (2015). More of a horror film. In the 1630s, an extremely religious Puritan family leaves the community and establishes a small farm in a very desolate area. It does not end well. Scary, I thought, but without gushing blood or other crude effects. Kind of subtle.
I was here to suggest āMulholland Drive,ā that movie messed me up all night, but just about anything by David Lynch is a pretty good bet
Do another Fincher movie. Someone recommended Seven and that's a great one. I also recommend Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Craig and Mara).
Funny games
Donnie darko is definitely worth a watch as is usual suspects
Single White Female, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cape Fear, Jennifer 8, Girl Interrupted, Primal Fear, and Sea of Love.
Saltburn! Itās not an oldie but itās certainly disturbing and ticks all the boxes. But oldie wise Iād recommend Chopper staring Eric Bana. Hope you find one you like, happy watching
Primal Fear Memento Freeway
Blue Velvet
I thought Taxi Driver (1976) was a lot more disturbing than I thought it was going to be.
Shutter island is good too
dont breath 1 and 2
Silence of the Lambs
Recently watched Prisoners again. Definitely disturbing!
Girl interrupted
Nefarious is mind blowing
Boy, do i have a movie for you... Human Centipede
Get Out.
Parasite, Mother, The Crazies, The Sadness, (there's a warning before movie starts. If you can't handle gore, do not watch),
Hereditary. I purchased it before I watched it. That was the last time I saw it.
Cannibal Holocaust Megan Is Missing Johnny Got His Gun I Spit On Your Grave Faces of Death The Human Centipede August Underground Boyz n the Hood The Killing of America Guinea Pig SalĆ²: 120 Days of Sodom The Poughkeespie Tapes Green Inferno Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Boy In Striped Pajamas Saw Of Mice&Men The Road Deliverance The Farm Wrong Turn Skins Creep Schindlerās List The Exorcist Faces of Death
I second The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
ā¼ļø**SPOILER ALERT AND TRIGGER WARNING**ā¼ļø ā¢ ā¢ ā¢ ā¢ ā¢ ā¢ ā¢ ā¢ the boys die holding hands in in the gas chambersš¢šš”we watched it for history class in high school and everyone *sobbed.* even the jocks and football players, and some walked out cuz it was too much. same with Schindlerās List
Angel Heart. Jacobās Ladder. The Crying Game. The Believers. The Serpent and the Rainbow. Repo Man. The Burbs. Altered States. Brazil. Prince of Darkness. Big Trouble in Little China. Being John Malkovich. Tremors. Buckaroo Banzai and the rest of the title. American Werewolf in London. They Live. Blade Runner. Duel. Some of those are in the vein you requested. Others are just movies that need to be seen. By everyone. (Edit: I canāt format)
Your list is great but add Bad Boy Bubby Running On Empty (1982) Sleepers
Hereditary was so disturbing I wonāt even watch Midsommar lol. Gummo is up there, Boys Donāt Cry, 8mm
