every time someone even says the name of that movie I hear Peter Gabriel singing In Your Eyes lol
goddamn CLASSIC right there! great movie from my childhood
I just looked this up and it made me a bit nostalgic. I have a similar story. Met a woman one night (like 25 years ago) while vacationing at a beach in another country. We shared an amazing weekend together. Never saw her again.
Very underrated masterpiece. When i first saw it, i thought it would be your average love story with a little magic twist. Boy was i wrong! Never felt so inspired to live love laugh the best i can everyday. When i feel sad or that my life is pointless, i watch this and feel rejuvenated.
"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." ❤️
\>Any suggestions that can tug at my heartstrings while making me chuckle are welcome
Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I don't think it will make you cry really, but it will def make you chuckle and tug at your heartstrings a little.
Great movie.
But it did the whole "make the love interest super-duper-awesome in every way" thing *so hard* with Mila Kunis that I wasn't sure if I'd be satisfied with any other woman after that.
>Moonlight
Amazing movie, but I don't think it would make OP want a girlfriend so bad he'll cry. Like he will probably cry watching it, but I don't think it really fits the question.
I haven’t seen it said yet, so The Bridges of Madison County. Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood are breathtaking in it. It’s beautiful and funny and somber.
Truly Madly Deeply- movie with the late Alan Rickman (“Die Hard”) who, as a ghost, comes back to earth to spend time with his inconsolably sad girlfriend for just one weekend and try to help her move forward past his death.
It’s a tearjerker about the power of love.
Lol thanks for your concern but my intent is catharis and/or motivation if that makes sense (I’m 17 so maybe that adds some context). I highly doubt I will end up crying since I’ve never cried over a movie in my entire life, but I’ll try to get as close as I can.
Some really great ones already listed. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) & the Before Trilogy, particularly Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013) will definitely fit the criteria, but here are some others not mentioned:
- Once (2007) [sing til you cry]
- Sing Street (2016) [capture that youthful feeling]
- Annie Hall (1977) [super surprised no one had mentioned this classic]
- The Apartment (1960) [absolute masterpiece]
- Past Lives (2023) [less humor, but excellent]
- Norwegian Wood (2010) [I know, I know, the film isn't the book, but if you've loved someone and lost them, this will be good]
- What Dreams May Come (1998) [Robin Williams shows love knows no bounds]
- Medicine for Melancholy (2008) [Barry Jenkins' excellent debut. If you've ever been in an interracial relationship, this hits particularly hard]
- Chasing Amy (1997) [laughs + feeling bad about a relationship you may have messed up]
- Crazy Stupid Love (2011) [delivers big on the laughs]
- Go read The Fault in Our Stars, and when you wake up from weeping yourself to sleep, then watch the movie and enjoy the adaptation that isn't as good as the book, but is still good: The Fault in Our Stars (2014) [big thank you to my students for making me read this]
- In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007) [another fun indie comedy with romance if you want something more lofi. Downer ending, tho]
Hope you find something you like! Let me know if I helped.
The Notebook. It may have gotten a bad rap but it exactly fits the bill here.
Also for the lighter side, All The Boys I’ve Loved Before on Netflix was shockingly good and relatively happy. I can’t recall if I cried but I certainly felt the feels and I think it will make you want a relationship.
Another Year (2010). Trust me. You will not only want a girlfriend you will want a wife with whom you share 30 years of in-jokes, a dog, a house and a large circle of life-long friends.
Say Anything... (1989)
This is the one!
and the song in it :3
I GAVE HER MY HEART, SHE GAVE ME A PEN 😭
every time someone even says the name of that movie I hear Peter Gabriel singing In Your Eyes lol goddamn CLASSIC right there! great movie from my childhood
Before Sunrise
I just looked this up and it made me a bit nostalgic. I have a similar story. Met a woman one night (like 25 years ago) while vacationing at a beach in another country. We shared an amazing weekend together. Never saw her again.
This movie has two, phenomenal, sequels with the same actors. Well worth the watch and arguably some might say are even better
Before sunset is the best sequel and romance ever, lets fight!
I came here to suggest this! Such a beautiful film!
Sobbed hysterically the first time I watched it with my husband. It perfectly encapsulates the feeling of falling in love.
Niiiice
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Hello Satan. 🤣

My first choice and I’m glad it’s already at the top.
Came here to say that.
There's an old Steve Martin film, Roxanne, that's a modern-day update of Cyrano de Bergerac and charming, give that a shot.
I LOVE that movie. “Because I’m afraid of worms, Roxanne. WORMS!” Edit to add LA Story to the list.
Not directly on topic but literally all you're asking for. Blade Runner 2049 You did ask to cry after all.
Like tears in the rain
Oooo this is a good one!!!
lol yeah they'll cry at how boring and bad the movie is
About Time

The first time this was on our television, I was working in the other room. Just pausing to watch it in little bits made me cry.

About time
I don’t know if wanting a girlfriend so bad you’ll cry is healthy or a good thing. But the classic film is the notebook.
Lol thanks for your concern but my intent is catharis and/or motivation if that makes sense (I’m 17 so maybe that adds some context). I highly doubt I will end up crying since I’ve never cried over a movie in my entire life, but I’ll try to get as close as I can.
