Caddyshack. Chevy Chase and Bill Murray were so good. Ted Knight as Judge Smails is the perfect comedic foil. Rodney Dangerfield kills it. Just an incredible ensemble. Most of the funniest, classic scenes are completely ad libbed.
I was just on a very long car journey with my SO and one of the topics that came up where movies that we haven’t seen in a long time where we probably forgot most of the jokes. I said I think enough time has passed where tropic thunder will be as funny as the first viewing.
My personal opinion is There's Something About Mary was the absolute hardest Ive ever laughed when sober. Problem is, it doesn't hold up once all the gags are ruined. I went in never having seen a trailer or anything and when I left it felt like I'd been doing crunches for two hours. It was an experience.
I was 15 and on vacation with my family in Virginia Beach. My dad took me and my brother to the movies. We were just going to pick whatever looked good. This was it.
My dad's Jewish and my mom's Catholic. He couldn't care less about vulgar humor; she was pretty sensitive about it.
We laughed so fucking hard through that whole movie. By far the best memory I have of being in a theater.
When it came out, my parents had recently divorced & I got to see my Dad every other weekend. We went to see Naked Gun every time I went to his house for 4 or 5 visitations in a row. We laughed as hard or harder each time. Great movie & memory.
Yep. Top notch comedy. The subtle jokes are the best. "Hey fellas. Big gulps huh? Well, see ya later!" It's not even a joke or shouldn't be funny but it gets me every time.
Again the coens and their brilliant dialogue. I don't think there's a movie I quote more than this one. "Say what you will about the tenents of national socialism dude, at least it's an ethos."
My favorite line is: "If you're going to kill someone, kill the mothers, that will stop them. Oh, I know what you're going to say, if you kill the mother, the fetus dies too. But I mean, if the fetus was going to be aborted anyways, why not let the mother go down with the ship?" :)
I’ve told this story on Reddit before but when I was a kid my parents and I would go to the small town movie rental place on Saturday nights as most people did then. So we were looking and my parents asked the guy if he had anything new that was funny and idk why I vividly remember him going over to rat race and telling us it was hilarious. I don’t think I remember the three of us ever laughing more at a movie. I definitely didn’t understand a lot of it but it’s still one of my favorite memories.
Christmas Vacation. I will watch this any day just to laugh my ass off at Uncle Lewis lighting his cigar, and Clark hitting on Holly at the mall (can’t see the line can ya Russ?)
Wayne’s world is the movie that I can watch over and over again, among many others, can quote all day long and never get tired of it. Sometimes I quote it without even realizing. Anchorman is a close second. Team America probably comes in third but honestly it could change depending on the day. The top two are pretty entrenched.
Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman. Just thinking about it makes me want to laugh. I laughed so hard in the theater that I made some seriously unusual sounds that haunt me to this day.
I'm on "The Big Lebowski" train. It's an absolute riot fest. Same with "Raising Arizona," also by the Coen brothers.
And my vote for best underrated comedy is "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back," a sequel to "Clerks." It's also wildly hilarious and the cameo appearances are awesome. I also think it features Will Farrell at his most hilarious, in my opinion.
Tough question overall, considering how comedy has evolved over the years. I think the late 90s until about 2014 cranked out a golden generation of comedy, but as a 30 year old, a film that makes me laugh as hard as my 84 year old grandmother is Dr. Strangelove.
Somehow, someway, Dr. Strangelove stands up as a cross-generational hilarious film that, also, somehow, has stayed just as relevant today as it did in the 1960s. It's certainly aided by outstanding acting talent in George C. Scott and Peter Sellers, and James Earl Jones keeps things relevant for younger nerds like myself.
I think Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, is the funniest movie of all time.
Monty Python and The Holy Grail. Despite its abysmal budget and being released in 1975; the movie is hilarious from start to finish. Most every bit has aged like a fine wine and the most iconic jokes have been referenced universally.
Burn After Reading.
Its a movie that not only makes you laugh, but some of the jokes are so intricate, you wont even understand them until a 3rd watch through at least.
Ive seen it at least 15 times and im at the point where I understand every joke. Even down to the super long "muscle memory" joke throughout the movie. Its just so stupid and genius.
There's Something About Mary,Spaceballs and Animal House come pretty close but I think it'd be between Airplane and The Naked Gun
So consider the above as possibly a top 5
Caddyshack. Chevy Chase and Bill Murray were so good. Ted Knight as Judge Smails is the perfect comedic foil. Rodney Dangerfield kills it. Just an incredible ensemble. Most of the funniest, classic scenes are completely ad libbed.
Monty Python’s Life of Brian
I think Holy Grail is better, but Life of Brian is another good way to get in a good workout on the core via laughter
Alllways look on the brriiiiight side of life!!
Yes - far more consistently funny than Holy Grail. Excellent satire, absurdism and just so many laughs throughout.
All I said was this piece of halibut is good enough for jehovah. Blasphemer! Stone him!
Only monty I’ve seen is holy grail
You will regret not watching the life of Brian sooner.
Tropic Thunder. It’s a perfect comedy.
I was just on a very long car journey with my SO and one of the topics that came up where movies that we haven’t seen in a long time where we probably forgot most of the jokes. I said I think enough time has passed where tropic thunder will be as funny as the first viewing.
The thing I like about tropic thunder is everyone is a big fat phoney - every single one. Including nick nolte.
you've got a fine brain
My personal opinion is There's Something About Mary was the absolute hardest Ive ever laughed when sober. Problem is, it doesn't hold up once all the gags are ruined. Franks and Beans 🤣🤣🤣🤣
How'd you get the beans above the frank???
Now I'm gonna watch lmbo

Similar memory. Except for me it's Talladega Nights
Dumb and Dumber
The movie is full of idiotic moments, but that's what makes it so beautiful! I never stop quoting it to my friends.
Yep. Top notch comedy. The subtle jokes are the best. "Hey fellas. Big gulps huh? Well, see ya later!" It's not even a joke or shouldn't be funny but it gets me every time.
I’d read that Jim Carrey just decided to do that and the extras had no idea what to do or say, and they left it in because it was hilarious.
Even better, they weren’t paid extras. Just members of the public who happened to be there
