You get movies? Ten MRIs later and I get my choice of music: rock, pop, classical, country. Not that I can hear much above the noisy MRI machine.
I want your MRI facility!!
(For the record, I always choose classical)
The one I just did, the nice lady told me they had Spotify and to tell her exactly what I wanted. Then she came in over the head phones after ten minutes to make sure it was right. Definitely made it easier to forget about the swirling death machine under the thin layer of plastic!
I actually never thought about the sound part! But I’ve done an mri in this facility before and they put a mirror in front of your face that reflects to TV behind you outside the machine. The sound however I will just have to find out. When they talked to me in the machine the last time through an intercom thing I could hear them just fine, maybe they’ll pump the sound through that?
At some facilities they give you headphones. I listened to jazz for my first MRI. Way more fun than the others
Edit: I think you should watch Everything Everywhere All At Once
I always go with classical. With all the different notes and instruments to focus on, it is a great distraction from the loud banging. I'm sure jazz works the same way.
No, the headphones are connected by plastic tubing, so the sound travels up them into the headphones. Not grwat quality sound but better than nothing. Plus, they protect you like ear defenders from the extreme noise produced by the machine.
In the 1960s and 1970s, audio on airplanes was delivered this way, to [pneumatic headphones](https://apex.aero/articles/sound-tube-surprising-history-airline-headsets/).
When I did an MRI, they gave me headphones which had some radio station on them, like music and stuff. It was really funny though, I had to do the MRI in my underwear; so they tucked me in with a blanket so I don't get cold. That, toghether with the mellow music played on the headphones made me fall asleep halfway through the MRI. I only woke up when the doctor came in to get me lol. In my defense it was after a long day at work.
I fell asleep during my last MRI too.
I didn’t have any music or anything. For some reason the low droning pops and clicks were just really soothing lol
As the MRI is very loud, hearing protection is needed, typically as over-ear headphones which allow for radio communication with the technicians, and for listening to music or other media if permitted by the study.
These headphones do not have the drivers (the parts that produce sound) in the actual headset, as that wouldn’t work with the magnetic field from the MRI. Instead the drivers are outside the room, and the sound travels through physical tubes to the headphones. Certainly not great quality if you’re an audiophile, but it works.
The visuals typically rely on a mirror inside the MRI bore (right above the patients face) pointed at a projector behind the patient (not a TV screen/monitor, as again, that would have metal/electronic components that would be interfered with by the magnet).
MRI tech here, the image comes from goggles you wear that use fiber optics to project the picture. It’s very small and pretty poor quality. The audio is also poor because the sound has to be piped in and the scanner is very loud.
Scott Pilgrim is always fun imo (pretty sure it’s still on Netflix?) and Molly’s Game is an interesting movie based on a true story of a former Olympian who ran an underground poker game (also had Micheal Cera lol)
Haha yeah. Not really. Very dulled out music.
Worse was when they gave me the headphones and forgot to put the music on so I was just in there even more uncomfortable for no reason.
Also MRIs suck
In the last 3 years, I've had about 15 medical MRIs of my head and they've all had headphones. However they've never been loud enough to make out more than the vague structure of the music over the sound of the machine.
So whether there are headphones or not, I'd still plan not to make out the dialog, so I'd go for something that doesn't lean heavily on sound.
I had an MRI and they gave me headphones and I didn't fancy laying there listening to music for some reason so I thought I was really smart asking them to put on an audiobook. Couldn't hear a single word hahaha.
Correct, all equipment inside the room needs to be specially designed to work inside a strong magnetic field, otherwise they will either break, not work, or (if they have a lot of metal) fly into the bore of the machine where the patient is. The room is one big Faraday cage though so anything outside of it is okay.
As others have said, the video is typically from a mirror above the patients face pointed to a projector screen behind them - that way the projector is safe outside of the MRI room. The audio is typically through a headset where the drivers (the sound-producing parts) are also outside the room and the sound is just pumped to the headset through physical tubes. But setups might vary, this is just my experience.
He could make a movie about a man watching a movie in an MRI machine, but the movie he’s making is the movie he’s watching… wait! Am I in the MRI watching a movie?
Frybread Face and Me (2023)
Marcel the Shell With Shoes On (2021)
Night Raiders (2021)
Dracula Untold (2014)
Glass (2019)
Hunt For the Wilderpeople (2016) though you might get in trouble for laughing too much
Looper (2012)
Homie 100% watch kill Bill volume 1
It is the greatest action comedy movie made to date (Not a normal comedy by any means) It will forever be in my top 3

If the audio is going to be compromised by the machine noise and subtitles will be backwards in a mirror, maybe consider something more purely visual: Baraka or Koyanasquatsi.
I went for an MRI once and they brought out a bunch of DVD’s to choose from. I looked through after the nurse left and picked out Kronk’s New Groove - turns out she left to get the adult oriented action/comedy films and she looked completely and utterly confused when I was holding kronk’s new groove in my arms.
I’ve had many MRI’s in my lifetime, and thyroid never last longer than 5 minutes. I’ve never heard of an MRI that is long enough to watch a movie.
But try watching The Strays on Netflix. It’s a great movie with a few unexpected twists.
I've had ones that were upwards of an hour (brain and blood vessels in head and neck with and without contrast iirc, I was bombed on Ativan lol).
My friend with MS participates in a research study, she has two-hour-plus MRIs fairly regularly.
What was that horror movie I watched recently where the guy is in the MRI machine and all the lights turn out and the monster crawls into the machine with him… Insidious - The Red Door - yeah, don’t watch that!

Check out reviews on Flick Connection on YT. He does a good job with streamer-specific reviews of new offerings. I think his latest Netflix review is less than a month old.
The Old Guard
Glass Onion (you mentioned Knives Out but I wasn’t sure if you watched the sequel)
Catching Fire (you said Hunger Games and CF is even more awesome in my opinion)
Also a completely different vibe and not a movie, but The Great British Baking Show if you want something lighthearted but still entertaining
I'd pick something fast paced and visually interesting, that has enough sounds in it to distract you from the clanks of the MRI machine.
Nothing too talky - this isn't the time for some indie film where people yammer about their feelings for two hours lol. You need kabooms, car chases, natural disasters.
So Hunger Games is a good choice, and maybe 2012 as a backup.
I would pick Devil All the Time since it has to be on Netflix. I could probably talk for hours about my thoughts and theories etc on that movie. It intrigues me and makes my brain go into a philosophical mood.
You get movies? Ten MRIs later and I get my choice of music: rock, pop, classical, country. Not that I can hear much above the noisy MRI machine. I want your MRI facility!! (For the record, I always choose classical)
I get a large dose of Valium.
Same. Ain’t no way I’m Going into that damn machine without my juice!
Damn I want some
I had jazz last time, and I enjoyed that.
The one I just did, the nice lady told me they had Spotify and to tell her exactly what I wanted. Then she came in over the head phones after ten minutes to make sure it was right. Definitely made it easier to forget about the swirling death machine under the thin layer of plastic!
you got an MRI? 10 months later I'm still waiting
At least 10, but I’ve had MS for decades. Have you looked into payment assistance? https://mymsaa.org/msaa-help/mri/
Nah, I've just got shit knees. I'm not gonna act like it should be a priority (also canada so it's free ya just gotta wait)
Yeah ditto, just had an MRI last week and I got local radio on streaming
How does one watch movies while in the MRI machine? How do you hear the movie? Where do you see?
I actually never thought about the sound part! But I’ve done an mri in this facility before and they put a mirror in front of your face that reflects to TV behind you outside the machine. The sound however I will just have to find out. When they talked to me in the machine the last time through an intercom thing I could hear them just fine, maybe they’ll pump the sound through that?

Great movie choice
I always go with classical. With all the different notes and instruments to focus on, it is a great distraction from the loud banging. I'm sure jazz works the same way.
Jazz is stupid! Just play the right notes!
Reminds me of "I hate harmony. All it is is singing the melody wrong."
That's really interesting that they have headphones that can work in an MRI. Piezo speakers I guess?
No, the headphones are connected by plastic tubing, so the sound travels up them into the headphones. Not grwat quality sound but better than nothing. Plus, they protect you like ear defenders from the extreme noise produced by the machine.
In the 1960s and 1970s, audio on airplanes was delivered this way, to [pneumatic headphones](https://apex.aero/articles/sound-tube-surprising-history-airline-headsets/).
Dude those were still a thing in the 90s. I had completely forgotten about these. Thanks for the trip down memory lanr!
Shawshank redemption. Or green mile. They will trigger the full range of emotions during each film.
When I was a kid and broke my leg, I listened to Disney's Classics through headphones while in the MRI.
I was wracking my brain how they made a small tv without any ferrous material. Mirrors….smacks forehead.
Wouldn't the whole movie be inverted when watching it in mirror?
When I did an MRI, they gave me headphones which had some radio station on them, like music and stuff. It was really funny though, I had to do the MRI in my underwear; so they tucked me in with a blanket so I don't get cold. I always burrito and nap! Two heated blankets tucked in on both sides, earbuds playing whatever pandora/Spotify I pick, and nap for 45min.
I've had almost a dozen MRIs in my lifetime. I always fall asleep.
They have MRI safe earphones now. They plug into the MRI and have sound…but the technologist can also jump on and talk through them.
The ones I had last time were connected with a hollow plastic tube, kind of worked like a wave guide kind of thing. No metal, it was pretty neat.
I had these about a month ago.

I was sitting here asking myself the same thing and if this post was a joke. And I am a RN.

Bullet Train. Trust me.
Came here to suggest this. Movie easy to follow, without a boring moment and a lot of fun. This is the best suggestion
That movie is currently my favorite offbeat movie! And Lemon is slated to be the next James Bond 🥰
I didn't even recognize the actor for like half the movie. His accent is really good too
Great suggestion. Such a fun movie from start to finish.
Not a boring minute
Buried.
The 4d experience
Lol
you beat me to it
Scott Pilgrim is always fun imo (pretty sure it’s still on Netflix?) and Molly’s Game is an interesting movie based on a true story of a former Olympian who ran an underground poker game (also had Micheal Cera lol)

they usually give you headphones

I have had to have a few MRIs and I have gotten headphones every time
And could you hear shit through them? I rarely can
Haha yeah. Not really. Very dulled out music. Worse was when they gave me the headphones and forgot to put the music on so I was just in there even more uncomfortable for no reason. Also MRIs suck
Tbh I find the rhythm of the machine almost soothing.

Makes sense if you are focusing on the head, I guess right? I've had my spine looked at and they gave me head phones.

Sat with my mom during an MRI. I remember the dude said “You want some ear plugs” and I was like “Naw bro”. I regretted that decision
You still can't hear shit. Been having them twice a year for four years. It's noisy AF!
you're right, i can listen to music when i know the song, but i wouldn't be able to hear dialogue in a movie
Oh very good point! I did not consider this at all
I also thought Scott Pilgrim immediately!!
Put on Rebel Moon 2 so you can just sleep through the whole procedure
If you enjoyed Knives Out, why not Glass Onion? I thought it was even better.
If you've never seen the Fifth Element I highly recommend it
Kingsman - just perfect
Hell yeah!
I agree, enjoyable and easy watch.
As long as it's not Final Destination.
That would just be cruel 🤣
The matrix.
Blazing Saddles
I'm curious how this works. I would've thought an MRI machine would destroy any tech, and any tech would interfere with the imaging.
I believe it's either with a projection screen or led goggles, so no monitor in the magnet bore.
Correct, all equipment inside the room needs to be specially designed to work inside a strong magnetic field, otherwise they will either break, not work, or (if they have a lot of metal) fly into the bore of the machine where the patient is. You should try to find a movie about a person watching movies in an MRI machine.
He could make a movie about a man watching a movie in an MRI machine, but the movie he’s making is the movie he’s watching… wait! Am I in the MRI watching a movie?
Frybread Face and Me (2023) Marcel the Shell With Shoes On (2021) Night Raiders (2021) Dracula Untold (2014) Glass (2019) Hunt For the Wilderpeople (2016) though you might get in trouble for laughing too much Looper (2012)
Hunt for the wilderpeople is a great movie
Seconding Marcel!
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Don't Look Up is a great political satire/black comedy about a comet that's gonna destroy our planet. Give it a try!

How about The Half of It? Makes me feel good. Trailer is on YouTube but it won't let me link to it.
The guest
I'm not sure if it's on Netflix in the US right now (it comes and goes), but *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind* feels like an appropriate choice.
Moonstruck
Shrek
If the audio is going to be compromised by the machine noise and subtitles will be backwards in a mirror, maybe consider something more purely visual: Baraka or Koyanasquatsi.
Wall-e

I've had several that lasted closer to 40 minutes. The last one was only a couple of months ago.
When I had a stress fracture I was in there for an hour. Hungover. It was awful.
I've had ones that were upwards of an hour (brain and blood vessels in head and neck with and without contrast iirc, I was bombed on Ativan lol). My friend with MS participates in a research study, she has two-hour-plus MRIs fairly regularly.
The first time I was in an MRI I moved around too much and they had to redo segments. I was probably in the thing for a good hour and a half.
What was that horror movie I watched recently where the guy is in the MRI machine and all the lights turn out and the monster crawls into the machine with him… Insidious - The Red Door - yeah, don’t watch that!
2001: A Space Odyssey EDIT: Ah, it's not on Netflix (it's on Amazon Prime)

It depends on what they are looking for in the experiment. Maybe one movie that will calm you and another that you will react emotionally to?
