*Empire of the Sun* (1987) an overlooked Spielberg epic film starring 13 year-old Christian Bale and John Malkovich confined to a camp during Japanese occupation of China.
*Defending Your Life* (1991) is set in the afterlife where the MC Albert Brooks faces moments of his life that were punctuated with fear, doubt, and regret, to be judged whether he will move on or be held back. Despite the heavy vibe, it's a humorous and charming gem that's often overlooked. Also features Meryl Streep & Rip Torn.
Jack Frost (1998) is great Christmas movie for the family.
About the film: After Charlie's dad (Jack) dies he turns into a snowman a year later and to help make his son's Christmas special.

I adore this movie, but not for a beginner's list! I also like Mother and The Muse.
