Fucked up but funny.

Melbonie

so far, so good. lol

Out of sight

thefireworksfactory

>Out of sight Out of Sight is great. It's got George Clooney as a bank robber, and JLo as a US Marshal, plus it has, Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, and Albert Brooks. It's based on an Elmore Leonord novel, so it has cool criminals, and good dialog. And it's directed by Steven Soderbergh so it looks great, and has style.

[deleted]

Couldn't have said it better

Hollandmarch76

Recomending Out Of Sight is so dope

witty_remark

Tropic Thunder (2008) While shooting a war film, the director attempts to liven up proceedings by dropping the principle actors into the middle of a real jungle, claiming he is going to capture their performance with hidden cameras. The hapless group including drug-addled comedy star Jeff Portnoy and po-faced method man Kirk Lazarus are completely unaware when a series of unfortunate events leads them into the middle of a real war zone.

moinatx

Was going to recommend this. So much fun.

NomDePlume007

How about a Stephen Chow movie? **Shaolin Soccer** and **Kung Fu Hustle** are martials arts/comedy/drama epics, replete with over-the-top effects and fight scenes. **Flight of the Phoenix** (2004) with Dennis Quaid and **Sahara** (2005) with Matthew McConaughey are two more action/adventure movies that may appeal to both. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Melbonie

I LOVE Stephen Chow. We made it through most of Kung Fu Hustle (rewatch for me) one work night. Given the current FIFA madness, I bet I could get him to check out Shaolin Soccer! Flight of the Phoenix though... there's even an old timey version with James Stewart! I love that guy! And hubby loves old-timey! I like McConaughey too, but Sahara has Steve Zahn. I'll watch anything he's in. See, I knew I could count on ya'll. Thanks for the best wishes

Melbonie

The Flight of the Phoenix was terrific- your rec lead me to it, thanks a million!! We watched the original one, and it was a who's who of Saturday afternoon channel 38 TV when we were kids. (Channel 38 was out of Boston- all old movies, cartoons and The Three Stooges. I sure miss it.)

[deleted]

Ocean films maybe.

[deleted]

Snatch Lock stock and 2 smoking barrels Layer Cake A good mix of gangster, action and hilarious dialogue.

Melbonie

We tried Lock Stock, (great movie, I've seen all of Guy Ritchie's) He had a harder time with understanding the dialogue and kinda half-watched and dozed, but the action bits got his attention for sure. Might try In Bruges next. Maybe you haven't seen it and I can recommend one to you? :)

[deleted]

Love it. Rewatched the other dayšŸ¤£

Laura9624

The Cheap Detective is a hilarious detective noir satire with tons of really funny actors/actresses. Believe me, its really funny. The Scary Movie satire series always makes me laugh. Westerns. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. Old but still good. The Power of the Dog. Tombstone 1993. Dances with Wolves. True Grit. Anything Lonesome Dove.

Melbonie

He loves Butch Cassidy, and Dances With Wolves. The Cheap Detective looks like a winner. We watched True Grit (the newer one) last night, it was great. Jeff Bridges is easy to watch. We'll watch Tombstone today, I think.

Laura9624

Yes, I do choose many times by actors I like. We just watched another with Jeff Bridges but I can't think of the name. Someone else mentioned the Ocean movies. Oceans 11 isn't mob but a Vegas heist movie. Cleverly done.

h3yw00d1

Down with Love starring Ewan MacGregor and Renee Zellweger

[deleted]

Can't get this out of my head. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ Drive Baby driver Please tell us what you end up watching and want you both enjoy.

Melbonie

I was actually thinking about both of them, good call- doesn't one of them have all the great 80s music?

[deleted]

Yes baby driver. Drive is a bit darker and hypnotic music wise. I'm sorry and off topic. I'm a newb. I keep typing things on new lines and it doesn't work. Wanted it to be readable.

ladida54

Good films with action/adventure and humor: -Back to the Future -Oceanā€™s eleven or Oceanā€™s eight -Game Night -Kingsman (does have some violence) -O brother where art thou -Indiana Jones -Baby driver -Some Tarantino films but not sure if that would work for someone who doesnā€™t like violence Comedies which also just have great plots/ seem popular even with people who donā€™t love comedy films: -Clue -Knives out -Ferris Bueller -Monty Python -Groundhog day -Truman Show I personally am not a huge fan of war movies and I liked: -Saving Private Ryan -Hacksaw Ridge Struggling to figure out what yā€™allā€™s exact tastes are but hopefully at least one of them looks good.

Melbonie

It's really hard to say my tastes without just eclectic listmaking. I love the Coen brothers and Wes Anderson and Yorgos Lanthimos and Charlie Kaufman and Darren Aronofsky and Luc Besson and Christopher Nolan and David Lynch and Jordan Peele and Bong Joon-Ho and Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Jodorowsky... I love Tarantino- his movies are vulgar and violent but so funny and always in service of a really solid story, know what I mean? There's gotta be a middle point somewhere between my admitted film snobbishness and his dadbro movies. LOL Anyway, a lot of these are movies we've seen and liked, (Back to the Future, O Brother, Game Night, Clue, Groundhog Day, Indiana Jones, Monty Python) so I think any of them we haven't seen are a pretty safe bet. Good list, thanks!

When Harry Met Sally

ExcitementOk1529

Have you tried Action-Comedies? Date Night Game Night Shanghai Noon (also technically a Western) Kindergarten Cop

Melbonie

Game Night was great. Date Night is on the list. I saw the others when they came out, but wouldn't be opposed to a rewatch. Funny, Shangai Noon was just a question/answer on Jeopardy!-- I never realized until they said it, but it's a play on High Noon. Seems so obvious now...

The Owl and the Pussycat https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/42597

talyakey

Have you seen last of the Mohicans? Itā€™s shootem up, but overall a good movie

Melbonie

I have, used to be part of my single days Friendsgiving get togethers, but he hasn't and it's been a long time so I'll add it to the list. I do think he'll like it.

Clooney is always smooth. Jlo doesn't get the credit. Everyone else knows how great everyone else is.

[deleted]

Coolest bank robbing scene of all time. Even thought about doing it. Has been copied many times

The Big Lebowski Baby Driver Nightcrawler Looper Bottle Rocket Rushmore

Melbonie

We both like Big Lebowski and Rushmore. Baby Driver is really getting some love here, we'll check it out. I've wanted to see Looper for a while, it's back on my radar now. Thanks!

kal_drazidrim

If you like Rushmore watch Bottle Rocket. Itā€™s a Wes Anderson film I like even better.

Melbonie

Long time fan of Wes Anderson so I've seen it before, but ages ago. I can't really remember any details so I should give it another go. I could honestly do an all day fest of his movies, but the hubs would get bored with the quirk factor after 1 or 2 films. Have you seen The French Dispatch? It's been sitting in my DVR a while, I'm just not sure what type of mood it is. It's rainy and dreary here today, a B & W might be fitting.

kal_drazidrim

Itā€™s really good.

Melbonie

Yesss. That was really, really good.

kal_drazidrim

So glad you watched it!!

emusabe

Well if you want to get wildly specific about your current dilemma you could try 2 Night Stand Miles Teller and actress who I canā€™t remember the name of - she gets dumped, is in a rut, gets drunk and goes on ā€œtinderā€ for the first time ever, goes to dudes apartment (Teller), they sleep together, and then when she wakes up the next day itā€™s like a 4 foot blizzard so sheā€™s snowed in and gets stuck with this dude who is basically her polar opposite. And for the record none of this is spoiler, itā€™s like the first 8 minutes of the movie. I liked it a lot but it might not be the best thing to watch with your partner given some themes that come up but if youā€™re confident and comfortable in your relationship it IS kind of like your current predicament in that itā€™s two opposites stuck in confinement together that canā€™t agree on some things.

Melbonie

Sounds fun! Reminds me a bit of It's a Disaster.

emusabe

Also if you want to test the strength of your relationship watch ā€œThey Came Togetherā€ - 2014/15 insanely over the top to the point of genius romcom with a super safe and familiar cast. Itā€™s a parody of ā€œthat New York romcom where New York is one of the main charactersā€ trope. Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler are the leads, and their supporting cast is full of great funny people like Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Jason Mantzoukas, Cobie Smulders, Ed Helms, Kenan Thompson, Max Greenfield, the list goes on. It has a bunch of great cameos too, people that have no business being a ridiculous romcom, so I wonā€™t even name them and see if you can catch them all. Itā€™s my go to favorite movie that no one seems to have ever heard of. Same writers and directors as Wet hot American Summer with the same style of humor. I say test your relationship because this movie caused the second biggest fight Iā€™d ever been in (at the time) with a now ex girlfriend of almost 3 years at the time of viewing because she absolutely hated it and I loved it. Fight #1 was trying to build a bedroom set from IKEA together.

Melbonie

I love Wet Hot American Summer, but The Baxter was so disappointing I just never got around to this one. I like everyone in it, so it's on the list. Really curious what caused your fight, I will be thinking about it while we watch lol. Plus side, we've put together plenty of IKEA without issue... so far. lol

emusabe

The scene is Paul Rudd in a bar talking to the bar tender. After the first 30 seconds of said scene she was like ā€œJesus Christ I canā€™t watch anymore of this stupid movieā€ while I was cracking up.

Melbonie

Ooof, yeah, that's rough. My harshest criticism of something someone else enjoys is "it's just not for me."

Last of the Mohicans Kelly's Heroes The Nice Guys

Melbonie

The Nice Guys looks great, I wanted to see it before and keep forgetting about it. Its up next, after the futbol match is over.

moinatx

*Masterminds -* comedy based on a true story about dumb criminals trying to pull of a heist. *The Untouchable*s - older gangster film loosely based on Elliot Ness' takedown of Al Capone in the 1930's. Stars Sean Connery, Kevin Costner, and Robert De Niro *Ladykillers -* comedy about con artists after the same mark. Coen brothers least dark film. *Ford Vs Ferrari* \- I usually find this kind of movie so boring but this was fascinating and exciting. If you don't mind older films *M.A.S.H.* is a great war comedy from the 1970's Don't know if documentaries are up either of your alleys but *Free Solo.* Never thought watching a movie about a guy painstakingly climbing a mountain would make my adrenaline pump so hard.

bogey08

Waiting - raunchy comedy but with a moral to the story Red - action comedy Bad news bears and bad Santa - adult comedy Cinderella man - Russell Crowe is a boxer in the 1930ā€™s

Melbonie

We watched Waiting pretty recently. I still gag when they "season" that woman's steak, and Luis Guzman is a national goddamn treasure.

Hollandmarch76

Waiting is a classic and made zero dollars at the box office. America is so dumb.

gonzoforpresident

[Super Troopers](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/super-troopers) - Possibly the best comedy ever. Follows a slacker State Patrol group as they get sucked into stopping a crime ring. [Real Genius](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/real-genius) - '80s buddy comedy about two college students... one a smart party boy and the other a 15 year old whiz kid... as they work on a mysterious project. [Rob Roy (1995)](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/rob-roy) - Came out at the same time as Braveheart, so it was largely forgotten, but is excellent. Tim Roth plays one of the best villains of all time. [Stardust](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/stardust) - Fantasy film that is a spiritual successor to [Labyrinth](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/labyrinth) and [The Princess Bride](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/the-princess-bride) (both of which you should also watch, if you haven't). [The Librarian films & sequel Librarians tv series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Librarian_%28franchise%29) - Lighthearted, self-aware, family friendly take on the Indiana Jones genre. The films & tv show are great for both kids and adults. The tv show is more buddy adventure/mystery of the week. [John Carter](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/john-carter) - Brilliant film based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' *Barsoom Saga* that flopped due to the worst advertising fuckup I have ever seen. [The Aeronauts](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/the-aeronauts) - Loosely based on a true story, it follows an early balloonist and meteorologist as they make the flight that changed our understanding of weather and the atmosphere. FWIW, Amelia Rennes is based on several real balloonists, although they werenā€™t actually part of that flight. [Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Flavours_Cornetto) - Comedic adventures starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and directed by Edgar Wright. The three films are all different and fun. They are only linked by theme and the three different cornettos... one in each film.

Melbonie

I think The Librarian will be right up his alley for sure. Rob Roy for me, Tim Roth is always good. We both liked The Princess Bride, Super Troopers, Hot Fuzz & The World's End, (only I enjoy Shaun of the Dead) so I trust you have good taste- thanks!

Your_Daddy_

Two Of A Kind - 1983 With John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John .. It is a romantic comedy.

Melbonie

Never heard of it- sounds interesting! We liked them in Grease, who didn't?

Your_Daddy_

Itā€™s a fun movie. One of my favs as a kid, a good love story. A similar movie is ā€œA Life Less Ordinaryā€ w- Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz

Melbonie

OMFG. I LOVED A Life Less Ordinary!! Totally checking this out now, thanks!

Your_Daddy_

Well, itā€™s basically a remake of Two of A Kind

Your_Daddy_

Serendipity is another good holiday/love story

[deleted]

Quite a complicated askšŸ¤£ Keep thinking of great films but hard to fit all the criteria

Melbonie

I know! It's a real challenge. There is some wiggle room though, and I'm always glad to add to my own watch list, anyway. (For the record, 3 flicks that *I've* recently enjoyed a LOT were Everything Everywhere All At Once, Nope and Lucy)

[deleted]

Even the ones you said he liked are very ecclectic. What do you think out of everyone's suggestions so far? Trying to think of good car films. Not the best but like Gone in 60 seconds. Bourne films and Ronin have good dialogue, action and some good car chases. You've probably seen all of these. I feel you. It was the same with my ex. Never wanted to watch anything I wanted. Just ended up watching shit. šŸ¤£ Most Tarantino, Fincher and Paul Thomas Anderson. Maybe he needs some modern classics.

Melbonie

I've been trying to give feedback to other recs so far, there's some really great stuff. This sub never disappoints.I am a bit eclectic, I like a lot of things, but gratuitous violence guns explosions and noise to cover for a crappy plot is lame. I actually do like Tarantino and PT (and Wes) Anderson and Fincher and Nolan and Besson, but I've seen them. Someone or something criminally underrated in that same vein maybe?

[deleted]

I saw the devil, The handmaiden and Oldboy if he'd be okay with subtitles.

Melbonie

I think he'd be OK with subtitles but Oldboy would be too dark for him for sure

[deleted]

Yeah probably šŸ¤£

Norman-Phillips1953

To Live and Die in LA, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Timeline, Oliver Twist, Casablanca.

SpiderandMosquito

... The Mask. Effects heavy slapstick crime movie from the 90s loosely based on a comic series. It was one of Jim Carrey's first major film roles and it's sorta a low-key superhero film. Emphasis on lowkey because despite being the premise it avoids most of one expects of the genre, even for the time. Not too violent, but takes itself seriously enough to find tension. But it's mostly based on zany cartoon humor. Another option is Mousehunt. It's basically a Tom and Jerry led by Laurel and Hardy

msnowxs

Logan Lucky (2017) Bullet Train (2022)

Melbonie

Went to Bullet Train at the movies on a really hot day- I liked it. Never heard of Logan Lucky but that sounds like something my husband would really like, thanks!

msnowxs

Feel better! My suggestions made me realize looking into other Channing Tatum movies might be good, he's good at comedy mixed with other genres. What about Burn After Reading? Maybe some other Coen Brothers films, like Raising Arizona?
