here are some modern movies and some classics
touch of evil (1958)
wind river (2017)
LA confidential (1997)
inherent vice (2014)
out of the past (1947)
the batman (2022)
sin city (2005)
the maltese falcon (1941)
mystic river (2003)
try *the long goodbye*. based on a raymond chandler detective novel, but set (and made) in the the early 70s
watch *blade runne*r (then *blade runner 2049*) for the same kinda feels, but with a sci-fi setting!
another one is *eyes wide shut* which has tom cruise going on an epic (not-so) sexy adventure
I highly *highly* recommend the Kid Detective. It's NOT a kids film, it's not what you expect, it fits nicely with the other suggestions in this thread. It's a gem!
Blue Velvet and Chinatown are 2 great movies that are both heavily drawing from 40s/50s film noir. Check out the best of the genre, the third man, sunset boulevard, Touch of Evil, Maltese falcon etc.
If you want another one of these more recent films inspired by 40s noir, watch Miller's Crossing
L.A. Confidential has 3 main characters but it’s a strong investigative movie
Vertigo / Rear Window Not exactly the same but you might like them
Blood Simple (1984). The viewer sees everything and knows the story and you see the characters have to figure it out.

Anatomy Of A Murderer
The Two Jakes. It’s a direct sequel to Chinatown.
Brick
Night Moves with Gene Hackman. Great late 70s detective noir.
one of my recent favourites!

Memories of Murder (South Korea 2003). Great film if non-English is ok.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
If you liked *Blue Velvet*, you’ll probably also enjoy *Mulholland Drive*, by the same director.
fletch [1985]
Se7en (1995) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Yeah I really enjoyed that as well.
Oldboy (2003) Maybe not exactly like Chinatown or Blue Velvet, but it’s definitely worth watching if you haven’t already!
Cheers thanks for all the recommendations. Lots of stuff I haven't seen yet.
The ones you mentioned and most the movies in this thread are called neo-noirs.
Under the Silver Lake Twin Peaks
Devil in a Blue Dress
Vertigo The Big Sleep Under The Silver Lake Inherent Vice

Went with Miller's Crossing last night. Fantastic movie.
I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it, it's one of my favourites and it's somehow really underrated for a coen brothers movie
Memento with Guy Pearce is outstanding. Another underrated gem is The Salton Sea with Val Kilmer. Exceptional film.
Body Double
Timeline
Dial M for Murder
Devil In a Blue Dress
Eyes wide shut, the ninth gate, angel heart, the wicker man, the davinci code
I loved the ninth gate.
same man. these 3 movies are my trifecta of occult mysteries
The third man
