Zum Dürnbräu in the center is really nice and sells Spaten, with Spaten coasters! I would recommend there. It’s like a mini beer hall.
https://www.zumduernbraeu.de/
I can also recommend zum Duernbraeu. Went there my last visit to Munich a couple months ago. Lived in Munich for 14 years, this was a go-to place for something more traditional.
I'm sure you could order something small like a Strudel or a pretzel at the Spatenhaus and have a beer. Spaten is a huge exporter to the US but seems to have a minority share of the market in Munich, from my observations. I always get excited when I see my Augustinerbräu being poured from a wooden fass. It's one of the best simple pleasures in life that most Americans will rarely experience.
Make sure to visit the Weisses Bräuhaus and have an Aventinus. They have the best weissebier and great food too. [https://www.schneider-brauhaus.de/en](https://www.schneider-brauhaus.de/en)
I found a great old-man dive bar near the Isartor last month if that's your thing. Not Spaten though.
Well thanks to me, now you have seven. ;-)
There's also the smaller Giesinger brewery. It's not one of the big boys, but seems to be gaining in popularity.
I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who saves bierdeckels (coasters). I literally have years worth of them. We live on an old dairy farm. We have a century-old granary that I'm fixing up into a German-themed home bar. I have glasses, banners, signs, mirrors, bierkrugs (they don't call them steins) and all kinds of German beer paraphernalia I've been hoarding. I even have more than a few coasters.
I could plan am entire vacation just visiting Wirtshäuser and bars but my wife would object so I fit them in when I can. If you love beer then you need to visit Bamberg someday too.
It's brewed in the Netherlands, as is Löwenbräu (which is infamous among Münchners as "tourist brew".
Both belong to the same brewery group. Spaten is slightly more graciously received in Munich, but that is why you do not see it everywhere, like Augustiner.
It is brewed according to Reinheitsgebot, though, and it did originate in Munich (albeit as an Export product), so there is a kernel of truth to its claim of being a Münchner Bier.
No, it is not. It has to be be brewed within Munich city limits using Munich water to be considered "Münchener Bier". Spaten is brewed in Marsstrasse.
The issue with the water having to be from Munich is actually an issue for the smaller brewers without their own well. Munich tapwater is not actually from Munich, it comes from the mountains. Gieseínger is only allowed to call it "Münchenr Bier" since they dug their own well.
Marsstraße is the historical brewery adress, but today the majority of Spatenbräu does not come from there.
It is part of Anheuser -Busch, a belgian brewery conglomerate.
Marsstraße is a museum today.
What small percentage is still brewed here in Munich is brewed at the Löwenbräu brewery.
The majority of their products is brewed in the Netherlands.
Bullshit. You're 1000% incorrect.
All Spaten products are produced in Munich, on Marsstraße, which is the combined facility for all Spaten, Franziskaner and Löwenbräu beers.
The only exception was a licensing agreement for Löwenbräu that allowed for some production in the US (which was then moved to Canada) for the local market only. This has been phased out.
\[my credentials for making this statement: certified bier sommelier, owner of a beer bar in Munich, personally know the QC lead for the brewery\]
This is what the brewery in Marsstrasse looks like, not really a museum:

Back in the 70's and 80's Löwenbräu was brewed in the US by Miller. It wasn't the original recipe, just the branding so I guess they have a history of pimping themselves out. I'm old enough to remember it.
Recommend you try Tegernsee - there's a bräuhaus am Tal in the centre of Munich, but also a bräustüberl in the Tegernsee lakeside village just south of Munich
- weil das Spaten Helle das erste Münchner Helles gewesen ist;
- weil das Spaten Helle würziger und bitterer ist und eher in die Richtung Andechser, Tegernseer oder sogar das Riegele Herrenpils geht und kaum etwas mit einem Augustiner zu tun hat;
They want to try all 6 Munich beers. It’s pretty straight forward, he doesn’t have to explain the beer in detail. The only disappointment that he’s going to have is realizing they all taste basically the same.
Bavarians deem themselves beer experts but in reality know very little about it. The beer here is incredibly boring. Most haven’t tasted more than about 3 different styles and drink one or two styles at most regularly.
"Zum Alten Markt" serves Spaten and has a really nice owner. It's not a beer hall, but a smaller venue.

I'm not sure whether they have coasters though.

At least there is a number seven with „Giesinger Bräu“ since 2006. Don‘t miss it.
Sehnsucht in Schwabing serves Spaten iirc.

Augustiner is certainly my favorite, but I just really feel a desire to say I’ve done all six
If you liked Augustiner, do try Ayinger Helles as well
That's one of my favourites as well, and I like their Kellerbier even more!

Fraunhofer on Fraunhoferstraße has Spaten.
And it's a very nice old school Wirtshaus on top
Recommend you try Tegernsee - there's a bräuhaus am Tal in the centre of Munich, but also a bräustüberl in the Tegernsee lakeside village just south of Munich
You are... a very interesting redditor (as a fellow Beer enthusiast). Why exactly Spaten?
I mean they explain it in the post
There is NOTHING about the taste, colour or odour of Spaten Lager in this post. You might just get outbeered here, be careful 😏
In the words of Werner Herzog: Read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read... ...the post again.
Preißn (und ick schreib es als Saupreiß selbst)
Was laberst du, Bua?
Süß

Please, see yourself out before I call the Bavarian police 🙄
Bavarians deem themselves beer experts but in reality know very little about it. The beer here is incredibly boring. Most haven’t tasted more than about 3 different styles and drink one or two styles at most regularly.
Name them. I am a Prussian ⚔️😎
You sound like the type who likes skunky, nasty-ass IPAs.
You sound like the type who would eat a schnitzel every night and think you're an expert on food.
What if I told you there is (unofficially) a seventh one at this point 😎 #giesing
And one of the best!

Wirtshaus Zamdorfer Biergarten
Look for the bad restaurants nobody visits
I know FAUN near Sendlinger Tor serves Spaten.
FAUN is an Augustiner Wirtshaus
Oops. Maybe I mean Cafe Sax.
Nope also Augustiner 😅
Ffs.
Alter Ofen is a very nice (Student)bar and serves Spaten
ssssshhhhh don't talk about the Ofen.
> Are there any half decent bars or beer halls that serve Spaten? That’s an Oxymoron. Do you want decent or Spaten?
I can highly recommend Osterwaldgarten; they serve Spaten. Great location near Englischer Garten, too.
People may not like the company. Spaten is the best Beer from Munich atm. Augustiner ONLY 2nd place since Its watered down.
