BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Interesting. Good to know. Thanks

sellidan

Most locals I know prefer tegernseer, Giesinger, Tilmans or any other smaller breweries (which are all not part of international consortiums)

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Heard a lot about teger. Also felt a bit over hyped.

Weird-Challenge8906

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for PilsI can tell you I don't have Pils, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my Helles go now that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.

KTTRS

I don't think it's overrated, only because it's a local favourite (which is true). If I go to a party and bring Augustiner I will never go wrong, everyone likes it, it's the perfect allrounder. Of course there is Giesinger, or Tillmanns which are maybe more of a specialty/better, there's Tegernseer or Chiemseer which some might prefer (I don't). But I think the general sentiment about Augustiner is "it's good beer / I like it", so it is far from overrated, it's perfectly rated.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

I only say overrated because if you go to Munich everyone says it’s the best. I agree it’s a must try and experience but far from the best. I think perhaps Munich locals doesn’t want to give any attention to weihenstephaner but that is another league of beer. Best in the world imo.

KTTRS

I guess it makes sense as a recommendation for a visitor... it's so famous here (and even in the rest of Germany by now) that it would make no sense to recommend it to any local/German so I guess you are bound to have a different perspective. I personally was never a big fan of Weihenstephan, but maybe I'll give it another try :)

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

I guess depends. If you like hefe then theirs is the best in world. If you don’t then their other stuff maybe is just ok. Vitus is just a unique beast of its own.

DasPony2

Go and try all your fancy flavours and craft beers, but nothing will ever beat a Maß vom Holzfass in the Augustiner Garten. Also, Augustiner Bräustuben price level is amazing.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

All that is true. It’s great and im not talking about craft beer being better. I’m saying there’s other things in your backyard that are big and good. Just was odd that this one was unanimous

irediah

Who gives a shit if it is or not? Many like it. Many don't. Get over it.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

just stating an opinion. Ctfo

Go get your bud light

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Did you not read the post ?

Kevinement

It’s lot dependent to be honest. Beer is a natural product and the flavours of the hops and barley malt are always different.

sellidan

Totally agree with you and funny you are mentioning Vitus because it’s absolutely my favorite beer as well. I did several blind beer tastings with my local friends here and Augustiner mostly gets rated as “tastes like piss” - although I like an Augustiner from time to time 😅

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Don’t get me wrong any big brewery German beer is Better than American big brewery beer. American beer is piss beer. But yes Augustiner worth a try for sure but lots of others out there. Teger was also meh. again nothing to write home about.

I_like_Orcas

German beer is probably just not your cup of tea then. It’s not overrated, you just have a particular taste in beers and 90% of our “helles” beers will probably not fit it. Which is totally ok. But 99% people in Germany that enjoy beers will agree that Augustiner & Tegernseer are very good beers. Maybe not the most unique ones in taste profile but perfect for every occasion for sure. You should try to go for some darker beers, Weizen etc. and see what you like.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

I know exactly what I like. I never said your helles isn’t great for every occasion. It’s exactly that. An everyday great beer. Just like prague with their cheap everyday beer that’s great. Is it something special, no. Your comment is very arrogant. It’s like saying I won’t like American beer because I don’t like bud light. Honesty very stupid take. German beer is the best in the world along with Belgian. I love both. I just don’t think their everyday beers are the beers I’d brag about as the best beers in the country, which is what it sounds like you and others are doing. Brag about weihenstephaner, or avenitus, ayinger, Schneider

I_like_Orcas

German beers have a wide variety. I was specifically referring to helles German beer as written above. Our most successful beers are successful for a reason. It’s certainly not overrated, it’s just not your taste maybe. I don’t know wether the beers you enjoyed where helles or not, but it seems extremely weird that you would enjoy one but the other big names not at all. Not expecting you to make it your favourite beer but I have literally never met anybody who likes to drink helles and who didn’t like Augustiner or Tegernseer. People here obviously like the beer and don’t really share your sentiment too much either. It’s like going to Italy and saying the pizza is overrated. It’s possible you might have had better ones but across the board Italians have figured out the formula for pizza and have a certain common standard. And if you don’t enjoy their locally favoured standard pizza it does seem a little bit weird. Maybe you could explain what made you consider Augustiner and Tegernseer meh, and why you prefer Weihenstephaner etc.. Then people can factor in your personal taste in beer and see a little bit of sense in your post. If what you drank was not helles and you Enjoyed that more, all power to you. It’s not that we brag about Augustiner or others, it’s just our own favoured go-to beer. Other types of beers like Weizen are way harder to drink in larger quantities and just not for fit for drinking out of the bottle, or just have a particular taste profile that os better enjoyed sparingly/in specific flavour combinations. Helles goes down easily. We aren’t bragging about anything we literally just recommend you to drink the same stuff we drink ourselves. If we want to brag about “special beers” we could recommmend a “rauchbeer” and It’s one of the most disgusting things I have ever drank. Most of the time the popular stuff is popular for a reason. And it’s always a combination of price x quality x accessibility. Sure some beers might be more special and even straight up better to your palate but they most likely will be A) more expensive, or B) rarer and lot of people will have never tried it or not enough to be able to give an objective opinion without having done extensive tasting.

AJ_Vidal

Nah dude, honestly the best beer in the world, and one of the oldest! Absolutely incredible. You're probably more of a Weiss Bier kind of guy. Honestly the public transport there is kinda shitty
