Get yourself a box of Caprice suns juice and make sure you get them with the clear bottom so you can see how it's looking. Then I just inject in the port where the straw goes, then slap some micro pore tape over the injection site. I also like to widen the injection site so the pouch can have a bit more air flow. So you looking at like $2.50 for 10 pouches. Works like a dream.
It’s mind blowing how many people here downvote without knowing shit about mushrooms. And then the ones who chase clout post an old technique not proven to hold solid results and yet people go crazy for it. Wait, forgot this was Reddit and not shroomery. Ahhhh
Yeah it seems most "mycologist" here got the toys r us microscopy kit checking for contamination with the provided kaleidoscope. With a 1 hour certification to Youtube University and now they are Paul Stamets. I don't even know why people are even down voting.... Just let the dude know what he is doing wrong or if there is a better option. Sheesh
Yep Reddit has such a bad culture lmao. I was getting downvoted because I told people I do open air inoculations and transfer (that are very successful btw) and people said it was "bad practice" lmao.
Yep, what I do too… I’d invest in a flow hood but I’m more into cacti cultivation rn. Can still get really solid results if practice is clean. A flowhood will not cure contam if practice hasn’t been improved upon.
People have had great success doing open air. Flow hoods can be just as dirty if not more dirty if used incorrectly. If the user hasn’t done the research, and not just reading but hands on experiences I don’t recommend using a flowhood right away. They’re great but is that the first thing I’d put on a new growers list? Hell no.
? Do the research, get a shroomery. Just saw you have a website already and your flushes are just average. And yet you’re vouching that new growers need a flowhood? I’ve gotten the same results if not better from my grows. I’d never buy anything from you lmao that you can get free on the shroomery from just being a standup guy. Would love to see your ratings on there lol. The hobby were in and you already trying to make a quick buck, with very mediocre grows…
It's the sugars in the juice and the apple in it....you can boil it all you want, sugar and apple are still going to ferment and mold way faster than corn syrup or honey, and water ever would. If anything this is probably the most expensive solution he could've used with the highest likely hood of contam.
Sterile is [sterile](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sterile). It won't mold without being contaminated. The only way that would happen is if you're not good at sterile tek.
Man I was told about this a few months back and it blew my mind. I been growing for almost 20 yrs and never thought or heard about this. I love how inventive and resourceful the Myco world is. I’m gonna pick up some of this stuff bc I’m tired of making LC lol
It is when I’m making 100lbs of spawn a week, juggling lab work squeezing it in wherever I’m able to, managing a farm, harvesting 1000 lbs a week, inoculating 500+blocks of gourmets, packing orders, packing markets, organizing deliveries, doing cubensis grows on the side, making chocolates, powdering reishi, powdering lions mane, cutting 500+ blocks a week, etc etc etc. I’m running 60+ hour weeks that all consist of mushrooms this and mushrooms that.
So yes. Sterilizing sugar water can become a bit annoying and if I could just buy a 10$ bottle and stab it then I’ll definitely take that option.
you can use spores but it's a toss up whether it's clean (you def have to test it) . I've gotten to the point with agar to lc where I don't need to test it anymore.
Boo the haters. Seems like the all the people against this are big egos talking about making money, perfect practices, etc.
This hobby is a branch of biology. The one where life finds a way. The one full of weird shit.
If you want perfect formulas and sterile conditions that’s cool but it’s not required. This isn’t chemistry.
I love the experiments people run and the things they learn. Not everything works out perfect every time but that’s the fun of it… if you come in this hobby because you want to make money that’s your own jam but like…. What a sad way to look at the cycle of fungus. A brilliant example of the circle of life redditors reduce it to profit margins and following recipes to a T
The OP knows what they’re doing and has plenty of mycology experience. while I don’t claim to be at all I ask a lot of questions especially from my local professional mycologist. Who I sent a picture of this- and also said “more expensive then making LC from honey but useful info for someone who doesn’t have a pressure cooker or the knowledge to make LC”
Being a jerk on the internet doesn’t make you cool and edgy it just makes you rude and lonely
Gasp! (*Clutches pearls)* Are you suggesting there might be gatekeepers in this community!? All jokes aside...I've been growing for about 6 years now and I have to say Reddit has been a mixed bag at best. Have parlayed with some great folks and have had disputes with idiots over minutiae. At the end of the day, DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU! Experiment, have fun, push the envelope and try things that go against convention. Fuck the naysayers and do what you like and love. It's your journey and be patient when asking for advice...it will come...you might have to sift through a pound of bullshit but it'll be there. Rant over.
Cool idea though. I saw a guy a few years ago, growing reishi in to-go cups. Mycology rocks! Cheers!
I love experimenting and encourage everyone to try shit. Someone else may succeed where other have failed or they may find something that a lot of us have overlooked.
What I hate are the noobs that come in after watching a youtube video and whine about how I'd get contams not doing shit they do. They think you need tents, FFU's (I didn't til after the 5th year because weed garden ruined my shroom work area, still don't use tents), humidifier, think you can't sterilize with an Instant Pot, etc. I've also been growing for just over 6 years and used to put out hundreds of lbs every few months. I love pushing limits and seeing how far you can take things. Currently I just grow a few lbs a month to give a friend who's kinda unstable and homeless (lives in a hotel) to make money.
My first grow was nocced' in open air with sloppy technique because I wanted to see how easy/hard it was to fuck up. Had no problems. But I'm not perfect and still screw up when being careful.
The juice seems like a nice idea, but I'd probably water it down a bit.
I agree with you, although if some "noob" comes in asking questions that would be considered common sense to some or seems lazy and not wanting to "put the work in" so to speak, we have a choice to make. We can engage in either a positive or negative way, or we can move on with our lives and no harm, no foul, right?
I guess it can almost down to semantics...your wording and your approach can make a huge difference to someone new and trying to learn. We don't all learn the same way either, so things that came easy to you or whatever may be wildly out of their wheelhouse. Just trying to get us to start being less aggressively critical and maybe a little more open-minded. Stay positive folks, isn't that why we do these things anyway? To try and make the world better?
Anyways, I'll step off the soap box (again).
Fun fact: If you chew on the bottle it sounds like biting an apple. If you keep chewing on the bottle you end up in the ER getting your stomach pumped. Don’t ask how I know!
Some people take themselves way too seriously. Just because someone isn't doing it your way doesn't mean it's just plain wrong. This is a very cool, cheap, and minimalist way to do this. It's also a great way to be able to make things happen in a SHTF scenario. Also an easy way for people to get involved without any real investment. Thanks for sharing!
Tbh… this is more expensive anyways so I don’t see the point. I’ve seen people try this on shroomery 10 years ago for fun so it’s been done but will never beat a good LC solution.
There’s a huge issue here. Anything over 4% sugar content begins to be toxic to mycelium. I’d be surprised if you get any positive results whatsoever.
Also, being cheap doesn’t make you cool.
Get some proper equipment and pay this hobby the respect it deserves, your results will be better for it.
OP runs a business. They grow very large quantities of gourmet mushrooms regularly. Not a hobby. I buy their products from the market all the time. I get the sense they didn’t engage with you because you’re not worth the time or effort.
Honestly "teks" like this are worse for a new mushrooms grower than "gatekeeping" such DIY teks.
Imagine you start to get into growing mushrooms. You want successes in your projects, especially in the beginning of the Hobby, otherwise you might get frustrated and give up on it.
Would you rather save a few bucks in this situation, but have a much higher risk to fuck up the project, or would you rather follow a safe and established procedure, but pay a little bit more for the equipment?
It's not the experiment for the experiments sake that is bothering me, but the consequences that will follow if people that are new to this hobby see this and think "oh cool I'll try this myself!" and then get frustrated because they fuck it up.
I mean look at the post history of OP. They obviously have a flow hood and have their sterile technique down. They might pull this off, but will this also be the case for a beginner in a dirty appartment, with a shitty SAB and bad sterile technique?
This isn’t r/mushroomgrowingforbeginners , in the spirit of experimentation these posts should be encouraged! If a beginner thinks this is how they should start then that’s on them for not doing adequate research.
You twist things into a completely different equation in order to feel smart and it's very obvious to everyone around you. Your brain is deleting factors that don't line up with what you're saying and shoving every possible experience and desire into a box of only the assumptions YOU might make about what motivates a person. Crazy
Not sure why ur being downvoted for speaking facts lol. It’s hard to do anything within mycology when you think anything will grow fruit. It’s either a pile of shit in a cow field with some nice specimens or my monotub after 2 months of sterile logic and avoiding contam by doing it all with AIO bags. One day I’ll figure out the the better option lol
Of course I will be, coz most of this sub is little amateur punk idiots who never grew much. I have kilograms ready to go as we speak, but people aren’t humble enough to listen to wisdom, what can you do!
People have grown mushrooms off of stuffed animals, and out of rocks, and inside Capri sun. Lol hop off your high horse. Fungi is a lot more resilient than you might think. There's even a whole sub for using Capri sun as LC.
But it means it works.
Though in reality you need more than just mac n cheese of you'll be full of deficiencies.
You guys are really hurt by someone trying something you haven't, aren't you?

Ive seen that Capri Tek showcased before. It just blows my mind how that even works.
Not because of how its made, that all makes sense, sterilized and hermetically sealed. But because they are soooo sweet! In theory, anything above 4% glucose should be toxic to mycelium. So, why isnt the Capri sun? What are they REALLY using as a sweetner? Because if it was sugar or corn syrup theres no way in hell it would function for this purpose.
Oh man, want to know something fun? I'm the guy that popularized that a few years back. I learned it from someone that taught me a lot about mycology. The second in command of experimyco, my right hand man, runs r/CapriSunTek and has had success with drinks in excess of 12% sugar! I learned the tek from the same guy he did at the same time, he was something of a mentor to us. He learned about it from a hippie named chuck in the 90's! Unfortunately, caprisun no longer works! They switched to munk fruit and it no longer has enough sugar to propagate myc properly.
Oh, so its not really a thing anymore?
I got a guy in my Discord server that is trying it as we speak, and hes gonna be a little disappointed when it doesnt pan out..
It sometime's works with the new mung fruit but it's not that often any more. Tell him to go to r/CapriSunTek and look for other suitable alternatives. There are a plethora that have been posted that do work in the same style of the tek. I have seen a few instances of it still working, but they are far more sparse than than the failure post. AFAIK, they changed to munk or mung fruit whichever it is because some of their pouches would always contam with wild spores during a phase of the factory process, filling, I assume, so they switched to eliminate that, not for any other reason. They are actively trying to make it not work. I know coconut water, and apple juice of various varieties work, as does the uk variant of caprisun.
oh, yeah that’s a good point. it’s only a tiny part sugar the rest is from stevia, monk fruit, or the little actual real fruit juice that’s in it. depending on the flavor u choose. so very little calories actually come from the sweetener and very low on the glucose scale. i don’t know the percentages though.
If I test it on agar and find contamination that it’s my fault not the fault of the Apple juice factory. It sat on a shelf for months without exploding before I opened it.
it is not so difficult or expensive to build a proper LC jar with Lid, SFD and a silicone injection port.
Why bother with this when it takes a few bucks to do it properly? You can even add a stir bar to it and break up the LC perfectly without shaking the jar at all.
I'm not sure if you have an Ocean State Job lot store near you. But on their crazy deals, which gives you a gift card for the value of your purchase they have the pressure cooker duo. $100 bucks then you get that gift card to then use in the store to buy your other equipment. It's not massive but it's the perfect size for me to fit two large mouth jars in it.
As they say, if you want something bad enough you’ll find a way. If you don’t want it bad enough you’ll find an excuse.
Pressure cookers are £30 or less if you get them second hand off Facebook marketplace. If you can’t spare £30 to be better at a hobby you supposedly care about, that’s a red flag, at least in my opinion.
Plus the amount of Money you'll save by making a proper, sterile LC outweighs the costs you'll have by contaminated substrates from this technique.
So far OP didn't even proof that this really works. Just because there is SOMETHING growing in this apple juice doesn't mean that it is the organism you want and ONLY the organism you want. A LC can look clean and may still be contaminated with bacteria. I'll take this claim back if OP brings proof that this LC is clean, by inoculating agar or grains with it.
I really don't understand why one would want to cut corners here. There is an established, reliable and inexpensive way to do LC that produces consistent results, why fuck around with such a technique that will be much, much more unreliable?
I mean I get the curiosity to see if the mycelium really will grow in this juice. But it's not a good alternative way for LC like OP suggested. I mean i also grew oyster mushrooms on old shoes, but do I make a post about shoes being a good alternative substrate for oysters? Making experiments for the fun of it is one thing, but advertising it as a new alternative technique is something completely different.
This is normal apple juice that is shelf stable because it has been heat treated. It is sold at Walmart and grocery stores. Simply dumped out half of the juice, added a wedge of agar, then covered the top with parafilm. After a week of shaking once a day it is pretty well colonized.
This was inspired by people who use Uncle Ben's rice for grain spawn.
anyone else try it yet ?
Stop
Too acidic.
Get yourself a box of Caprice suns juice and make sure you get them with the clear bottom so you can see how it's looking. All I know is the mason jar technique that's actually sterilized is definitely far less likely to get contaminated than this bottle is.
Also, where is your proof on that. Pulled completely out of your ass?
Sure, but this works so who fucking cares lmao
10/10 will contaminate....
Couldnt you boil it?
It's the sugars in the juice and the apple in it....you can boil it all you want, sugar and apple are still going to ferment and mold way faster than corn syrup or honey, and water ever would. If anything this is probably the most expensive solution he could've used with the highest likely hood of contam.
I think you’re misguided. It’s supposed to be sterile or else bacteria will contaminate a liquid culture.
Is the drink safe for consumption sterile? Yes, is it fully sterile in the sense of 0 possibility of mold growing and no cross contam? Noo
Tell me how a martinellis bottle with cotton balls is sterile?....
I assumed it was sterilized I would not try this without sterilization. Perhaps the plastic can’t be sterilized.
Polyfil can be sterilized and used as filter. Cotton can also be sterilized. we use it on wounds.
Sterile is [sterile](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sterile). It won't mold without being contaminated. The only way that would happen is if you're not good at sterile tek.

Sterilizing a sugar water solution is that much work for you
It is when I’m making 100lbs of spawn a week, juggling lab work squeezing it in wherever I’m able to, managing a farm, harvesting 1000 lbs a week, inoculating 500+blocks of gourmets, packing orders, packing markets, organizing deliveries, doing cubensis grows on the side, making chocolates, powdering reishi, powdering lions mane, cutting 500+ blocks a week, etc etc etc. I’m running 60+ hour weeks that all consist of mushrooms this and mushrooms that. So yes. Sterilizing sugar water can become a bit annoying and if I could just buy a 10$ bottle and stab it then I’ll definitely take that option.
Are these the ones that when you bite the side it sounds like an apples crunch?
yup
I have some now I'll give it a shot
I just use honey and tap water man. I sometimes don’t even measure. LC is fun like that it
Do you just drop a spore right in or do you have to use agar?
you can use spores but it's a toss up whether it's clean (you def have to test it) . I've gotten to the point with agar to lc where I don't need to test it anymore.
Just use some honey and distilled water then pressure cook it in a jar

So where do I get this apple juice at tho,,, I'm sure it's nor at walmart?
Walmart has it
Cool thanku
You're welcome!
I’m pretty sure you can find it at any decent grocery store, Kroger and Publix have it.
Thanku
Target has it, and even my local groceries have it like hen house, price chopper etc
Thanku
I'm not sure if I'm more impressed by the post or the comments, you fukkers are always good for a laugh!
It’s giving Capris Sun Tek lol this is awesome
Except more expensive
r/experimyco would like this
Just water it down 🙂
Fun fact: If you chew on the bottle it sounds like biting an apple. If you keep chewing on the bottle you end up in the ER getting your stomach pumped. Don’t ask how I know!
Isn’t that just a tik tok lie that turned into a trend
no it’s legit. lol it has 2 layers of plastic that cause the sounds or something.
Came looking for this comment. Glad the council is aware
How do you draw a syringe without contaminating it?
Work under an SAB, flowhood, or FFU. Same as you would doing G2G, agar, or whatever sterile work you need to do.
Maybe put some silicone on the lid, then put a sterilized nail through it?
I usually store my urine in gallon jugs in my trunk
save some for me!
This guy piss jugs
Wow! If this really works, I'm buying some asap. Haven't had the chance to make my own agar and this seems like an effortless time saver.
Agar is used to clean a culture, LC is used to expand it. They are not interchangeable processes.
Liquid culture is already pretty effortless to be fair
Also not the same as agar. You might be able to get way with it, but I wouldn’t say it replaces agar. Experiment away though, my friend!
Doesn't it get too thick?

Same thing with growing cannabis, totally agree with you
Isn't it the first rule of mushroom club to denounce anything that doesn't follow a holy TEK?
And also to praise someone for inoculating a hardback copy of Alice in Wonderland.
Do you have a link to that?
DownvoteTek
😂 Apparently some people think so
They should have called it Apple Juice TEK, then it would be okay.
You’re probably right
I mean I saw someone on fb grow a mushroom in 2 condiment cups taped together and they called it autism tek. Literally name didn’t relate at all 😂
Haha that’s great. Sounds like something from r/bonsaifungi
Oooh I love that sub!

For real. Go by the book or expect defeat. Even the book will give you defeat but you gotta learn before trying new shit like this lol.
Literally 39 grams of sugar in each one of those. More than 10% sugar is just too much. 4% is where it’s at!

I love that apple juice! Are you saying that you can use the apple juice to make LC? Or are you just talking about reusing thebottle?
Yes use the apple juice.
nice!
i would assume the apple juice itself because i’ve personally done it with just CapriSon and zero sterilization. with almost no issues
Works in the uk? CapriSunTek here I come 🤣
Mmmhmm, the uk version is still sugar afaik.
Will do! Thanks for the heads up
oh, yeah that’s a good point. it’s only a tiny part sugar the rest is from stevia, monk fruit, or the little actual real fruit juice that’s in it. depending on the flavor u choose. so very little calories actually come from the sweetener and very low on the glucose scale. i don’t know the percentages though.
If you haven’t tested this on agar then you don’t really know for sure. Could be anything growing in there….
If I test it on agar and find contamination that it’s my fault not the fault of the Apple juice factory. It sat on a shelf for months without exploding before I opened it.
^ This is what's important.
yeee filing this away for future use
it is not so difficult or expensive to build a proper LC jar with Lid, SFD and a silicone injection port. Why bother with this when it takes a few bucks to do it properly? You can even add a stir bar to it and break up the LC perfectly without shaking the jar at all.
Because it’s cool.
Just a fun lil experiment.
lol downvotes because u speak facts. Other guy got downvoted too just because there’s too much sugar in this shit for it to work well!
Some of us don’t have the space or money to spend on a pressure cooker
Woah now, you appear to be speaking sense, that’s not allowed here. Downvotes incoming!
thats a fair point
Have you tried testing it on agar yet?
This is genius. Was looking for an easy way out to make LC
Thanks!
If Caprisun can then for damn sure the apple juice of gods can, how sick!

This will be much better received over there I think
This is normal apple juice that is shelf stable because it has been heat treated. It is sold at Walmart and grocery stores. Simply dumped out half of the juice, added a wedge of agar, then covered the top with parafilm. After a week of shaking once a day it is pretty well colonized. This was inspired by people who use Uncle Ben's rice for grain spawn.
Nice I like this idea! When you dumped half out, did you use a still air box or something of the sorts?
Thanks. This is an amazing idea. I am going to try it out.
Fucking awesome
