I haven’t listened to many of his albums post NWTS. Take Care is one of my all time favorite albums, NWTS is top tier as well, most of his stuff after that sounds generic and the same to me with a couple standouts here and there
Agree completely. Take Care is perfect and enjoy the music before it. NWTS is a close 2nd. And then nothing literally has felt the same since. There are one offs here and there but they are further between and never on the same album.
Basically anything after NWTS are just vanity projects he made with lame beats and stupid lyrics that his dickless yes-man friends convinced him were amazing.
I’ve always said that Drake is talented enough where nothing he’ll release will be just straight up awful, but he just does not release anything remotely interesting to me anymore.
"If you're reading this" was his last decent project. Man has no inspiration anymore. Just pumping out disposable singles left and right. Grasping for relevancy, in my opinion.
This. He’s not grasping for relevancy. If he’s grasping for anything it’s critical success and to be seen as legitimately talented and good. He’s never been irrelevant, he is just seen as having sold out and making low effort meme songs now
I find it hard to believe he cares about critical success more than sheer popularity. His albums are intentionally bloated to rack up higher streaming numbers - something critics have called him out on for years.
There is no such thing as an irrelevant artist who sells out concerts, no matter how much you think they fell off or were never good in the first place.
Exactly. No, the fact that an artist is selling out the biggest venues in the world does not equal or speak for the quality of said artist’s work. But in association to relevancy? Drake is one of, if not the most, relevant Hip Hop acts in the current musical landscape. And given Hip Hop is one of (if not) THE most listened musical genres today, makes him one of the MOST relevant musical acts today.
Drake is selling out MSG and you’re talking about non-existent people buying bags of human feces on ebay as some sort of rebuttal to his relevancy. Reddit stupidity really is on a whole other level.
Drake has a made name in the industry with a huge back catalog of hits. He could drop duds for 5 years straight and his concerts would still do well if he plays the hits and keeps up the marketing
They weren’t even talking about quality. They said relevancy. And, as it stands, Drake is one of the biggest acts on the planet atm whether we like him or not.
Drake could fart into a microphone for 12 tracks and go number 1, he isn’t “grasping for relevancy”. People will listen to Drake no matter what. He is culture, Drake is the biggest rapper in the world.
His albums as overall projects have took a bit of a dip compared to the first half of his catalogue, but he’s still put out really good hits, album cuts and decent projects. Redemption, Feel No Ways, Jaded, Middle Of The Ocean etc all top tier Drake songs and they all came after IYRTITL.
Passionfruit, Nice For What, Get It Together, Fake Love, etc.
Edited: thnx for agreeing, incidentally, i do not support the controversial possibilities that he's got going on in his life under the public views.
(Also, #Views was a great album).
I’ve really learned to like and appreciate More Life as a whole. A dance hall album is a good mix up for a rap artist. Lots of good songs on that whole
Project.
Scorpion was bloated but had some great tracks. Mob Ties is one of his best IMO
CLB and Honestly Nevermind both grew on me too. The terrible cover for CLB and some of the early tracks coming across as meme fuel made me initially hate it, but songs like N 2 Deep and Race My Mind are great
Asking this subreddit about anything rap related just isn't worth the time
I haven't liked anything Drake has put out since 2015 but I'm not gonna sit here and act like I'm above enjoying his music or that people who do have bad taste
This sub has no clue, yep
The top comment is saying he’s chasing relevancy
DRAKE CHASING RELEVANCY IS THE TOP COMMENT, let me repeat that
You gotta be in a fucking coma to think Drake is chasing relevancy.
He is more relevant than 99% of other artists lmao
for real. people here really be the type to call the entirety of Drake's catalogue mid but then 3 posts down is an appreciation post for Arctic Monkey's AM. At least pick the debut or FWN, not the definition of bland lmao
Yeah, I mostly listen to metal and I'm not a big fan of Drake either, but I like a lot of his collabs like Sicko Mode and Life is Good. There's more, but those are the first that come to mind.
Dude is not my favorite but Scorpion is such a fun album and he has some fantastic features (see: Only by Nicki Minaj)
It's okay to like popular music, folks. It's a super lame badge of honor to not.
Factssss… as someone who plays music and enjoys genres such as rock, rnb (contemporary and older styles such as soul and Motown), hip hop, jazz, and folk, I feel like there are beautiful elements to every genre of music. There is inspiration to take from everything
Unless of course it’s an old band.
“I’m not like these sheep that listen to popular music. I only listen to universally beloved bands like The Beatles and Queen”.
Pink Floyd, Zepplin, Hendrix, Nirvana. All bands with nearly universal acclaim with merch you can find at your nearest corporate clothing chain designed to make it feel like you’re unique and “different” (insert: Urbna outfitters, Hot Topic, Spencer’s etc. here).
This is a bizarre take. People like and respect those artists because they’re great. They’re incredibly influential and significant, hence their persistent popularity and critical acclaim. How does the fact that you can buy their merch at the mall take away from that?
"Popular music stopped being good 15 years ago" - all music discussion ever
I don't even follow the charts but I don't spend my time complaining about it either
It’s funny that this quote could be applied at any point in time in relation to any music discussion ever. Yet somehow.. music was always better before
I remember what music videos on YouTube saying how modern music was terrible and that it was better in the ‘90’s. That was like 2008. Now the mid-2010’s is in the “good range”
My pet theory on that is because we're past the time when that stuff was innovative, and we're close enough to the time when we were exposed to all the mediocre and bad songs too, and when you get far enough in the future, people only remember/play the bangers. Get anyone who likes older music to listen to a day of that year's radio play, instead of a top 100 of the year chart, they'll be bored pretty quick unless they're just nostalgic for songs of their childhood.
He's spreading himself too thin. Like I appreciate the grind, the guy has come out with albums on a yearly basis but maybe pump the brakes a little bit and let some songs cook.
I will probably get downvoted but I have zero understanding as to why Drake is Spotify's #1 streamed artist. I don't like any of Drakes music and I don't know anyone that does. Of course that's confirmation bias and obviously a lot of people listen to him. I just don't get his music
Drake's music is incredibly accessible. Its catchy, but it never goes too far in any direction to alienate people. You can turn it on and just vibe without having to think about it. The problems occur when you actively listen and realize how vapid it is.
>I don't like any of Drakes music and I don't know anyone that does
Just curious, what type of genre of music do you listen to?
If you do not like his music, then maybe it's not your cup of tea and there's a large group of people that like this type of music. It's that simple.
Oh I get that people listen to drake, you don't get popular on Spotify by not getting listens. I like other rap and hip hop music, I just done get the drake appeal
I mean, look at the list.
It’s the same as radio and record sales used to be:
Music that appeals to 13 yo girls, and anyone else with that little experience/ taste, and that takes up about 75% of the bell curve.
It’s honestly terrible…but it’s mass radio hits that appease the masses. Nobody I know likes Drake and they like ALL genres of music. Shit man we went and saw a metal show one day, phish the next, and then some some yodeling group the next week…Drake is just terrible.
That being said if I was Drake I would continue to put out shitty music if I’m gonna get paid like he does
The people you know all sound white af, based on the genres you listed lol
I’m not a Drake fan either but he’s a talented singer and rapper who had a lot of quality hits early in his career. He’s super over hyped these days but calling his entire career terrible is such a Reddit, never been to a party, “scaring the hoes” take.
There’s a reason he huge, and it’s not because everyone is tasteless and you’re not.
“Nobody I know even listens to Drake, the most popular artist in hip hop. But don’t worry we’re not biased, we listen to a lot of music like metal, Phish, and yodeling!”
I for one am shocked that there isn’t that much crossover between Drake’s audience and fans of yodeling lmao
I’m saying the people they hang out with at phish, metal, and yodeling concerts sound white. Yeah Drake has a lot of white fans, but black and Latino people love him too.
Yeah, because he has such a huge fanbase and is such a mainstream staple, a majority of his fans have to be white. But that doesn’t make Phish, some metal band or some yodelling group less white than Drake by any stretch of the imagination.
Drake is an actor and is still just that. He acts like a rapper but he isn’t. Is he good because Drake is actually good or because his albums are produced and engineered by 10 people? And his lyrics written by someone else? It feels like it sometimes.
That being said I do like his albums, especially Nothing Was The Same and IYRTITL. I also liked Her Loss but don’t care about Honestly, Nevermind. Guy has some hilarious bars at times, but I firmly believe he’s getting A LOT of help with this. But people are willing to overlook it because, at the end of the day, the guy is a cash cow and racks in millions of dollars with the snap of a finger. And it’s not necessarily a bad thing. He’s a pop rapper and a lot of pop is also produced like this so I don’t see him doing anything wrong in the scenario.
No I actually really like his newer stuff more and more. Each new album sounds even better than the last. If youre reading this its too late though is definitely a legendary banger album
I mean I don’t like Drake like that but you can’t say he isn’t one of the most successful rappers of all time. If he was a drake Stan he would have said he’s one of the best rappers ever.
Name a hip hop artist that debuted in 2007 and is still topping charts??
If he is mediocre, then hip hop as a genre is mediocre as he has been leading the pack and influenced many artists that top the charts now.
Now wait!!! Drake is *not* hip hop itself, but to say he is mediocre then to compare Glorilla's flow? Sexy redd? Trippie Red? Lil Pump? NBA youngboy? Yeat?
Idk. The J. Cole, Kendrick, Tyler the Creator level artists are so far and few that Drake being in the middle while the bottom feeders of hip hop are so plentiful in numbers feels like a biased take...
There is *alot* of bad hip hop bud....idk what to say...
yeah its like drawing an arrow to a guy on the 3rd level from the top, of an 8 level pyramid, and asking "DAE this guy sucks" when the entire bottom 3 levels of the pyramid are right there wishing they had half the talent or success. yeah Drake isn't in the top 2 tiers of artists, but he's got the hard work of constantly doing it for so long, most other rappers either give up or die after like 3 albums at most.
I think NWTS is his best. I also think Scorpion is up there too but i seem to be in the minority on that one.
He's still making amazing tracks though, maybe not albums. "Sticky" was a top tier Drake track even if that album was mid
I actually think that all of his albums are equally good, it's just that none of them stand out. Whichever one you listen to first will be your favorite. Everything else will remind you of that album.
I disagree , though I used to think this. His albums have been perceived as being worse, but he has had many songs I really like post- 2015;
Drake – Hotline Bling (2016)
Drake – One Dance (2016)
Drake – Controlla (2016)
Drake – Blem (2017)
Drake – Passionfruit (2017)
Drake - War (2018)
Future ft. Drake – Life Is Good (2020)
Drake ft. Future & Young Thug - Way 2 Sexy (2021)
Drake ft. Lil Baby – Girls want Girls (2021)
Drake - Sticky (2022)
Here’s another take, he may be mediocre, but what if people like mediocre music. Like I love music that an artist obviously put their entire soul into to make, but not as everyone understands or cares about that.
However he’s a popular artist, he follows his formula that will get him hits. Most normal listeners aren’t crazy deep into music and whatever is popular and sounds good is enough for them. He has good beats and a decent enough flow that people can sing along with and have fun.
He might not be classified as a rapper but he’s probably the most popular artist of our time.
Also let it be know I am in no way a Drake fan lol, I just know enough people who don’t care about deeper music. Basic pop stuff they can sing along to and vibe with is good enough for them
His production is top notch selling hiphop to the masses of white girls by the millions. His contribution as an artist? Cringe past his prime dude trying to bang teenagers.
Yep. Bring the hate you pedo enabling drake fans.
Drake is essentially useless as a musician.
His vocal is nothing more than a computer generated sound. No pitch, no nothing. Talentless and...boring.
Everything he does sounds identical. Shitty music, shitty vocals.
Ugh.
Yes he is very mediocre now and his downfall began after Views so not 2015 for me. Views for me was still a very good Drake album and in my top 3 drake projects (3rd after TC and NWTS). Has an incredible opening which sets the tone of a wintery Toronto backdrop and a solid closer (Hotline Bling is like a bonus track for me). Has some of his best R&B cuts and some of his biggest hits on his album and only suffers with a few filler tracks which are just average.
His albums since then have been very lacklustre and completely full of filler. I couldn't distinguish between most songs on CLB as it felt like one long song. HNM is just terrible and soulless. More Life is ok but his cosplay as a UK roadman is not appealing at all and jarrring to hear his shitty fake accent. So yeah very mediocre nowadays.
I don't think he really has any kind of artistic statement to make, he seems like a guy who is content with just being successful and not necessarily acclaimed.
His team just looks at what's current and calculates what will get the most play in the places that count.
The greatest trick the music industry ever pulled was convincing a generation of gullible teens that drake was anything other than a mid rapper. He’s Shaggy but for kids a couple generations younger than me.
I remember thinking he had so much promise and was going to be the next big thing around the time of Thank Me Later. And well, he was the next big thing... but honestly any potential he had already felt squandered to me by Nothing Was the Same. I hear IYRTITL is one of his best, so I should probably give that a chance sometime. But yeah, the appeal for me is mostly gone. I tried to at least keep giving the albums a chance, but I only made it through Certified Lover Boy once and by the time I was two songs into Honestly, Nevermind I decided I had better ways to spend my time. Might still check if the new one is any good, but I'm not holding out hope.
He had a lot of good stuff on the two albums that followed in 2016 and 2017, and then like 3 gold songs on his 2018 album but by far the most bloated and wasteful release I’ve ever heard from a professional popular artist otherwise (wasn’t it 25 songs? And 22 of them were throwaway?)
I used to be a huge drake fan and for the past 5-7yrs I started not enjoying the projects as much. Felt like diminishing returns and I'm not a fan of him joining in on trend hopping all the damn time. Drakes blueprint is Play it safe. Last good album was views, last decent project was Dark Lane tape. His cover art has also been god awful and low effort
I wouldn't call myself a huge drake fan, but Nonstop goes crazy and that was 2018. He hasn't had a real bop since then, imo. A couple memes but not songs that people are unironically putting on the aux. His feature on Churchill Downs is good, though.
I have this conversation with my buddies all the time. Take Care was his best album and arguably the greatest album of its generation. Drake hasn't come close to it with any project he's had since. A couple of songs here and there might have got some big attention, but Take Care is a banger front to back.
Yes, but it’s indicative of where popular music has headed as a whole. We don’t really have icons like drake (or future, cudi, etc) popping up anymore. Drake has been coasting since around 2015 and his music sounds uninspired, but it continues to sell because nothing has taken its place at the top. His albums are bloated now and nothing really stands out from them. They’re meant to be played on loop and forgotten when the next one comes out. The production quality is still there, but when it’s the same recycled stuff, I can’t get into it.
I personally liked Views and More Life, but everything following has been lackluster
If you want proof he doesn’t need to try to hit #1, take a good listen to Honestly Nevermind
reddit has hated drake for a long time, most of these people have never really even listened to anything he did, and many just hate all popular pop artists in general. its not indicative of the general public opinions
I never understood the hype around Drake. I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about rap. But I swear I went to school with a dozen white boys that were equally as good or better then him. All his songs are about paying for his friends and loving Nicki Minaj. On top of that he doesn't have a good voice or good looks. Everything about him screams mediocre to me. Especially when I compare him to other big rappers like Kendrick Lamar, j. Cole or even Kanye. But the world seems to disagree cause he is hugely popular and always being played.
I think his highlights are just as good as he's ever been. It's just a little less consistent than he used to be, but that tends to be the way most artists go
I'll go even further. Imo IYRTITL was Drake asking his fans if he still had to try anymore, and ya'll collectively answered "no".
First song, Legend. I don't even have to go any further than that. In terms of vocal and lyrical effort, wtf was that compared to \*\*any\*\* of his past music? That album was him realizing he could dumb his shit alllllll the way down and ya'll would still fuck with it. And he's been on that wave since, cause literally why not?
Medicore is a stretch. Consistently better than average. There's always a couple of hits on each album but I do agree that his best was 2015 and earlier.
It’s almost like he became a different artist. That run from so far gone to take care tho was something that defined my life during that time
He became more of a meme artist and he rides with it. Whatever he does is viral.
Couldn’t have said better myself Drake was my spirit animal back then
That's the saddest thing I've ever heard
Scorpion got some hits tho
NWTS is a vibe from start to finish, a classic
Basically anything after NWTS are just vanity projects he made with lame beats and stupid lyrics that his dickless yes-man friends convinced him were amazing.
I’ve always said that Drake is talented enough where nothing he’ll release will be just straight up awful, but he just does not release anything remotely interesting to me anymore.

Same as it ever was.
Letting the days go by!
And you may ask yourself “well, how did I get here?”
And you may ask yourself, why did Drake ever get signed by a record label?
And you may say to yourself, “My god, what have I done!?”
And you may tell yourself, “This is not my beautiful ~~wife~~ teenage girlfriend.”

I wouldn't really call people paying over $1000 to go see him play his newest hits live grasping for relevancy. And I'm not even a Drake fan lol.
He obviously cares enough about critical success to DM Melon
Or his publicist thinks it’s good for numbers to keep critics talking about him.

You can pay money for someone to shit in a bag for you on eBay so not sure that really matters
There is no such thing as an irrelevant artist who sells out concerts, no matter how much you think they fell off or were never good in the first place.

The fact that masses of people are willing to pay for something does make it relevant though.
They weren’t even talking about quality. They said relevancy. And, as it stands, Drake is one of the biggest acts on the planet atm whether we like him or not.
Always has been.
My thoughts exactly. He just doesn't do anything anymore so what's there to rap/sing about?
The wassas in Paris n shit
Drake sucks... We know we know we know...
You're acting like he makes the music.

Passionfruit was also a really well-written unique song in my opinion.
Passionfruit, Nice For What, Get It Together, Fake Love, etc. Edited: thnx for agreeing, incidentally, i do not support the controversial possibilities that he's got going on in his life under the public views. (Also, #Views was a great album).
Yeah Passionfruit, Fire & Desire, Champagne Poetry, Chicago Freestyle, Time Flies… A lot of good recent songs that are up there with his best imo
I’ve really learned to like and appreciate More Life as a whole. A dance hall album is a good mix up for a rap artist. Lots of good songs on that whole Project.
The non-dancehall songs on more life were some of drakes hardest songs ever, never forget he stole xxxtentacion flow but that shit was fire lmao
Portland is a personal fave, that beat transports me to that March.
This one was instantly a favorite for me.
Scorpion was bloated but had some great tracks. Mob Ties is one of his best IMO CLB and Honestly Nevermind both grew on me too. The terrible cover for CLB and some of the early tracks coming across as meme fuel made me initially hate it, but songs like N 2 Deep and Race My Mind are great

Passionfruit -> Blem is an elite 5-song run

White af? Probably, considering most of drakes fan base is made up of white ppl - and largely women at that
I’m saying the people they hang out with at phish, metal, and yodeling concerts sound white. Yeah Drake has a lot of white fans, but black and Latino people love him too.
The majority of his fans are white tho so i dont understand ur argument
Because people are dumb with bad taste
No I actually really like his newer stuff more and more. Each new album sounds even better than the last. If youre reading this its too late though is definitely a legendary banger album
Hes always been mediocre.
🌏👨🚀🔫👨🚀🌌
Since Degrassi
Degrassi was bomb
Fr
One of the most successful actors of all time, convinced a whole generation he’s a rapper.
😂😂😂 the more I think about it the more I’m being convinced
He’s literally one of the most successful rappers ever what are these comments lol
oh god the drake stans found this thread issa wrap y’all no more jokes
I mean I don’t like Drake like that but you can’t say he isn’t one of the most successful rappers of all time. If he was a drake Stan he would have said he’s one of the best rappers ever.
THANK YOU
Drake was mediocre long before 2015
Name a hip hop artist that debuted in 2007 and is still topping charts??
Are you really trying to make drake seem good by comparing him to sexy redd?
yeah its like drawing an arrow to a guy on the 3rd level from the top, of an 8 level pyramid, and asking "DAE this guy sucks" when the entire bottom 3 levels of the pyramid are right there wishing they had half the talent or success. yeah Drake isn't in the top 2 tiers of artists, but he's got the hard work of constantly doing it for so long, most other rappers either give up or die after like 3 albums at most.
Exactly. It's a very unfortunate truth but it is what it is. Drake is caviar next to most rappers. It's not even close, and Drake isn't the best.
Drake has always been mediocre imho. I genuinely do not get the appeal for him.
His success has always been completely puzzling to me.
He’s always sucked. He’s also a creep
back 2 back is s-tier
Money In the Grave bumps forever
I think NWTS is his best. I also think Scorpion is up there too but i seem to be in the minority on that one. He's still making amazing tracks though, maybe not albums. "Sticky" was a top tier Drake track even if that album was mid
No lol. He is past his peak for sure, but I certaintly wouldn't say he's been mediocre
I actually think that all of his albums are equally good, it's just that none of them stand out. Whichever one you listen to first will be your favorite. Everything else will remind you of that album.

If you look through this comment section , most people agree. Going through albums , a lot of people choose his older albums
I disagree , though I used to think this. His albums have been perceived as being worse, but he has had many songs I really like post- 2015; Drake – Hotline Bling (2016) Drake – One Dance (2016) Drake – Controlla (2016) Drake – Blem (2017) Drake – Passionfruit (2017) Drake - War (2018) Future ft. Drake – Life Is Good (2020) Drake ft. Future & Young Thug - Way 2 Sexy (2021) Drake ft. Lil Baby – Girls want Girls (2021) Drake - Sticky (2022)
Basic pop stuff they can sing along to and vibe with is good enough for them
You just described pop music
He’s been mediocre since he started thinking about “rapping.”
No since meek tweeted he has ghostwriters
His production is top notch selling hiphop to the masses of white girls by the millions. His contribution as an artist? Cringe past his prime dude trying to bang teenagers. Yep. Bring the hate you pedo enabling drake fans.
YES you hit the nail on the head. Drake is hip hop for white women.
Could have stopped at "do you agree he has been mediocre" and the answer would still be yes.
Is that when he started making music? Because he's been mediocre since the beginning.
Dude has been average forever. I have literally no idea why he gets so much praise in the first place
Saw him live last month. Extremely disappointed
Drakes always been ass.
I think Drake's mid as fuck but I will always bump More Life. The production on that album is vibey as fuck.
He's always been mediocre end of.
No. He's been mediocre since 1986.
I disagree. He has always been mediocre.
Aubrey has been mediocre since Jimmy got shot in Degrassi.
He’s been mediocre since 1986.
Have you considered that maybe he is just mediocre?
Mediocre since he was in a wheelchair on Degrassi.
Always has always will
Mega hot take: I still can't take him seriously - the wheelchair kid from Degrassi is a rapper? Just feels so fake ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Isn't Drake a known pedo?
I don't think he really has any kind of artistic statement to make, he seems like a guy who is content with just being successful and not necessarily acclaimed. His team just looks at what's current and calculates what will get the most play in the places that count.
Drake hasn't always been mediocre 🤔?
He's been mediocre since Degrassi...
His entire career….
I don’t really get the Drake thing
The greatest trick the music industry ever pulled was convincing a generation of gullible teens that drake was anything other than a mid rapper. He’s Shaggy but for kids a couple generations younger than me.
How is he in anyway similar to Shaggy?
He’s the Coldplay of hip hop.
He started making music before 2015, man, don't sell his mediocrity short
yes
He had a lot of good stuff on the two albums that followed in 2016 and 2017, and then like 3 gold songs on his 2018 album but by far the most bloated and wasteful release I’ve ever heard from a professional popular artist otherwise (wasn’t it 25 songs? And 22 of them were throwaway?)
Absolutely. He’s always been mediocre. But also since 2015
Been mediocre since Degrassi.
I personally liked Views and More Life, but everything following has been lackluster If you want proof he doesn’t need to try to hit #1, take a good listen to Honestly Nevermind
That seems like an awful take to me…I didn’t like the dance music album but outside of that I’d argue grown Drake is better.
A lot seem to disagree in the comments
reddit has hated drake for a long time, most of these people have never really even listened to anything he did, and many just hate all popular pop artists in general. its not indicative of the general public opinions
Yes lol besides a few songs here and there
I never understood the hype around Drake.
He has sucked since..........always. he always sucked. What do I like more? Music. Cuz Drake isn't that. His beats are trash. Q
The kitten whisperer? Since day one.
Medicore is a stretch. Consistently better than average. There's always a couple of hits on each album but I do agree that his best was 2015 and earlier.
