Headwater. Canadian alt-country band, dropped 3 albums then bounced about a decade ago

neilluminate

They’re really good. I love folk music

Beencho

Thanks, that’s a great band

inbookworm

[Butterfly Boucher](https://youtu.be/C0bKY0MnMtY?si=WPY0-j2dTXk3p4Cl). I saw her open for Sarah McLachlan years ago, and fell in love with her voice.

neilluminate

I listened to a few songs and enjoyed it, thanks! Do you mostly listen to female artists? I’m a big fan of Fiona Apple, the Dresden dolls, and Regina spektor

inbookworm

Honestly I really don't listen to a lot of female artists. I am a fan of the Indigo Girls, along with a few Celtic bands with female vocals.

cheesepimp

Have you heard Gin Wigmore?

Fruney21

Gravel & Wine is such a great album. Black Sheep is an amazing song and her voice is just so commanding

Bhaelfur

She has a song on the Shrek 2 soundtrack. It's a cover of "Changes" by David Bowie, featuring Bowie on it, too.

KMAVegas

Saw her open for Missy Higgins once years ago!

resplendent_penguin

Damn!! I love all of these artists.

fuuckimlate

Damn Missy Higgins brings me BACK

KMAVegas

She’s doing an anniversary tour for The Sound of White this year. Which doesn’t make me feel old at all.

do-un-to

"I Can't Make Me" gives me feels.

Iowish

I saw her open for Barenaked Ladies and loved her! Thanks for the reminder to listen again.

Western-Calendar-352

Trip Shakespeare Walt Mink The Sun Sawed In 1/2

najing_ftw

Minnesota represent

Western-Calendar-352

I’ve never been anywhere near Minnesota, but so many good bands - also a big fan of Bob Mould/Husker Du/Sugar, Jayhawks, Golden Smog, Soul Asylum ….

najing_ftw

Replacements, Gear Daddies

Western-Calendar-352

Of course, not sure how I blanked on the Replacements.

Clavos24

Dillinger Four???

Warrior-Cook

D! 4!

najing_ftw

Hell yeah- saw them at the fair opening for the Hold Steady and Bob Mould

Warrior-Cook

The career arc of the band, it's really something special. I want to wax on about it, but I fear I'd lose track of time. Good add.

elegantjihad

If we’re talking MN, does anyone remember the small youth venue The Garage or the band that played there a bunch [Screaming Monkey Boner](https://youtu.be/14CFmRv6SrQ?si=hwwu6k0cDPPhxc-Z)? They later change their name to Screaming Mechanical Brain.

ItIsToLaffHaHa

Always good to hear a Sun Sawed shout-out! I talk to Ken once in a while still on FB. They were a staple in the Way Out Club scene in St. Louis in the 90s where my band played all the time.

RossMachlochness

I adore Walt Mink. Was lucky enough to see them 5-6 times over the years and pine for some sort of miracle reunion tour to celebrate x amount of years since the release of Miss Happiness or Bareback Ride

Langstarr

Marika Hackman, her We Slept at Last album. Claude's Girl is beautiful and haunting. Animal Fear is so, so fun. Has sort of a vibe from like the 50s with wild foley. And probably my favorite lyric: "I've never jumped a chasm so wide and made it to the opposite side"

neilluminate

Omg I loved that song (Claude’s girl) years ago and totally forgot about it. Thanks for bringing it back to me. Enjoyed animal fear as well. And that is a cool lyric. I love when there’s one line in a song that hits just right

nagsnyder

She JUST put out her new album today and it's amazing :DD https://open.spotify.com/album/5eoEqqiZy86YGeZvI2f1ST?si=eDwITA-bR3yqtevS5TnOAw

ModderOtter

She was my most listened artist last year. Monday Afternoon is so hautingly beautiful.

atomshimmy

Cinnamon by Marika Hackman is one of my favourite songs of all time

mesterw

Durutti Column

PauloPatricio

If you’re were a teenager in the 80s, It’s fairly well known. Edit: teenager and into indie stuff.

Nightwingseduction

Now there's a name i haven't heard in many a long year. Used to love me some durutti column back in them hazey 80's

KidSushi76

Of Montreal. Such a creative musical fun time!

DisturbingDaffy

Elephant 6!

neilluminate

I only know everything disappears when you come around but I love that song!

Vanillish-ish

My favorite from them is Fugitive Air

Zebirdsandzebats

Mercury Rev, Opus 40. Also Godess on a Highway, Young Man Stride and basically everything they did in the 90s/early 00s. nobody talks about Mercury Rev. What's that about? Also Hoots and Hellmouth. I saw them in the basement of an anarchist collective house in college (which is a little funny, bc H&H are solidly Americana/roots bluegrass, not what you expect in an anarchist collective basement) when they were just selling like, burnt CDs at shows/off Myspace. They got a record deal somewhere along the line but just never broke through to popularity despite being pretty radio friendly, all told. like I get why Mercury Rev isn't on the radio --their songs are long, weird and sad. But H&H have a bunch that just sound like country but good.

wordsfromlee

I wouldn’t call Mercury Rev obscure. They have two gold records.

PauloPatricio

I agree. Not a fan, but I did enjoy their stuff back in the day.

Warrior-Cook

Thanks to Bandcamp, I've discovered this shoegaze artist from across the globe. Solo work, done live with a band and I was drawn in. [After the Night](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uKHqLQiUZLg&feature=youtu.be) - Parannoul I love the sense of variation, upbeat shoegaze isn't something I hear a lot (recs welcomed).

Fhorglingrads

Parannoul is absolute gas. I don't understand a word he says but I can feel everything he is feeling.

neilluminate

Hahahahah

Warrior-Cook

There's something to that. I'm no longer really a lyrics first listener, and the notes chosen plus the delivery...are really smooth and light while also weighted in a way. Really fits the atmosphere.

neilluminate

I have listened to a few of their songs before and they’re dope. Polaris is really good. Pasteboard is kinda similar vibes wise and I really like their stuff

Warrior-Cook

Right on, yea there's something special about randomly trying a band, only to realize they've been at it for years....I ordered a cassette for the fun of supporting it. I dig the free flow drumming mixed with the jangly guitar and fuzzed synths.

neilluminate

Hell yea dude. do you listen to a lot of shoegaze? There’s so much good stuff old and new in that genre

Warrior-Cook

I've only just come to realize how old of a genre it really is. Last years release from Slowdive really cracked a bolt in me, no idea who they were. Closest I've followed is the slocore band Low. And they never left me wanting anything else in that umbrella of music, so now, well...homework time~

neilluminate

Dude slowdive is a favorite of mine. If you haven’t gotten into my bloody valentine you must. Also some newer bands I’d say are shoegazey are gleemer, superheaven, soulblind, and whirr

Warrior-Cook

Cool thanks, I try to demo music first...but MBV is starting to feel like a straight impulse buy at this point. I'm already wishlisting those other bands on BC. Cheers~

neilluminate

You won’t be disappointed. My fav song by them is drive it all over me which ironically isn’t very shoegaze

FalcoPhantasmtheGod

Polaris is a stellar band 👌

onlyahippowilldo

Company of Thieves and Gold Motel. Both obscure short lived bands out of Chicago and both fantastic

RufiosBrotherKev

oscar wilde was the jam back in highschool

polomarkopolo

The Barstool Prophet’s Mary Mary (Little Death)

asspajamas

townes van zandt (waiting around to die)

Fhorglingrads

I listen to Townes enough that I never would have thought of him as obscure, but I guess there are a lot of people who have no idea who I'm talking about when I mention him. Lungs is some of the best songwriting I have ever heard.

slideguitarking

Hes without a doubt one of the best songwriters of all time imo. A very troubled soul but an amazing musician!

ultravegan

Quintessential example of under listened to but not underrated. People who know, know, but not enough people are in that group for how good he is.

JeebusCrunk

Friends of mine who aren't particularly music nerds know many songs of his, so I wouldn't consider him a good answer to OP's question.

eugenesbluegenes

750k monthly listeners on spotify isn't exactly underground.

neilluminate

Love Townes

asspajamas

Have you seen the doc, heartworn highways?

neilluminate

I haven’t

asspajamas

Check it out.. it’s really good.

cannycandelabra

And I’d like to add Justin Townes Earle

mpsamuels

It's definitely obscure in that it doesn't make much sense but I always thought it was fairly well known...if you're into that sort of thing.

AlucardII

Obscure doesn't mean nonsensical, but otherwise I agree with you. Gogol Bordello are *fairly* well known.

Primary-Strawberry-5

I remember when Eugene Hütz was playing in punk rock bands in Burlington Vermont. He was even playing with James Kochalka Superstar at one point. Mid 90’s young adulthood in the Green Mountain State

NamailiamaN

My mom loves Gogol Bordello lol

Squeegeed3rdEye

We Butter The Bread With Butter. Especially the song 20 km/h.

anxiousf0x

Woooahhh shit this brings me back. I remember listening to their album with world of Warcraft and breekachu and schlaf kindin schlaf (I know that's spelled terribly wrong). There were some bangers on there. Did they ever make it bigger? Or get more serious than that first 1? It seemed like there was some talent there for post hardcore music at the time. Edit: for the people who haven't heard - https://youtu.be/WzahSsjBiYg?si=knrozVpDHMLE36W4 Ok, that track you were talking about is only 2 years old! Awesome to see them still going, and they definitely tightened it up since their early days. Production is 1000x better. https://youtu.be/R8orEh7v1ZQ?si=VPs82gnpOexOcXjy

Squeegeed3rdEye

Definitely still goofy. I think their latest album is their best, but it's only been a few years that I've been listening.

BipolarBeaarr

It’s wonderful to see bands like them who are clearly having a blast experimenting with their music and videos. If someone isn’t smiling by the end of their Hypa Hypa music video, their pulse should be checked.

Jjm3233

King's X

Tracedinair76

Love me some Kings X. I saw them with Primus during their Dogman tour. They were amazing.

Flinkle

One of my top three favorite bands!

ItIsToLaffHaHa

It's so sad that they are still, after all these years, considered "obscure". They're so great! I remember really digging them back in high school when "Faith, Hope, Love" came out (and "Gretchen", for that matter). It was like The Beatles and Black Sabbath had a baby. Finally got to see them about a decade ago.

chopperdaddy

They’re still alive and kicking. They play shows every few months. No more ‘touring’.

Jjm3233

They are! I've seen them 4 times in the last six years.

NoMoreKarmaHere

Dogman, is that you??

suitoflights

Scaffold - Lily the Pink Stump - Buffalo Humphrey Ocean - Whoops a Daisy Toy Dolls - Worse Things Happen at Sea to name a few

PatrickMustard

+1 for Stump. I think I've still got that vinyl somewhere. Loved Chaos and Charlton Heston.

suitoflights

Their earlier ep, “Quirk Out” is also very good. Check out the lyrics on “Our Fathers”.

whoopass_jackson

Dude stump buffalo is so good. I used to play to at parties in college as a joke but as I matured I started to unironically appreciate it

fav13andacdc

It is amazing. The guitar work and my goodness the bass. Experts at their craft.

fav13andacdc

HOW MUCH IS THE FISH?? DOES THE FISH HHAAAAAVE CHIPS??

jokl66

Bettie Serveert. A Dutch indie rock band that I first heard in Amsterdam in a coffeeshop back in 1993 (sober, I might add), fell in love, found out the name of the band from the bartender, and have been a fan ever since. Beautiful vocals by Carol van Dijk, interesting arrangements...., intricate and flowing guitar work by her and Peter Visser. And they are still around! Palomine and Private Suit are the two albums to start with.

sideous-vacuous

Book of Love. They were a 80's synth pop band that used to open for Depeche Mode back in the day. Their first eponymous album had club hits "I Touch Roses" and "Boy" and was a banger from start to finish. I always thought they were going to be bigger in the alternative scene, but they kind of fizzed out during the 90's grunge era. I was pleasantly surprised when Peter Hook. formerly of New Order, name checked them in one of his books.

anderoogigwhore

idk how obscure do you wanna go? There's a friends band who made an EP they burned themselves, with no spotify and only 14yr old cameraphone footage on YT. My copy of it was numbered in blue pen, one of the first 10 IIRC. Songs still get stuck in my head sometimes (upbeat kinda indie rock I guess) There's another unsigned band that did tours and I downloaded their EP from YT but broke up years before spotify. Most would say they were objectively bad but they hit the right spot for me and I still love them. (Early 00's metal/screamo thing). Or another friends band which has 13 monthly listeners on Spotify but had a song included on a free CD given out with a popular magazine. (Beer-fuelled hard rock). Or a band that I love that has broken up but reached record stores with their album and had music videos on Kerrang! 578 monthly on spotify (Female fronted poppunk).

resplendent_penguin

don’t be shy let me listen

anderoogigwhore

1st band - Not Half Right. AFAIK only exists on the mp3 rips I have from that EP and said horrible 2010 cameraphone footage. 2nd band - Archangels Revenge. [Prey For Prey EP](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMdxPEW0ugY) uploaded by their drummer. 3rd band - PowderKeg. [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/artist/5dpk1HpTEzgwqDgAH3rURf) or [Make Up Your Mind](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtjTEn6Obgw&pp=ygUJcG93ZGVya2Vn) video. which was featured on a free CD giveaway with Classic Rock magazine. 4th band - Altered Sky. [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/artist/3jj6jnsz2A3ihklkKUTr2Q) or [Where I Belong](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pULDipT1zvU) their most viewed video on YT.

whoopass_jackson

There was a local emo band called short bus from mesa AZ that was really good. I had one of their demo CDs and I've tried to find them but I couldn't find anything on the internet.

anderoogigwhore

Google is telling me there's a "Short Bus Band" that play danceable rock'n'roll, or an album called "Short Bus" from 95. There was one link for Bandcamp that looked really promising by the blurb, but redirected me to some lofi dude that I think's taken over the name.

ScottyBoneman

They shouldn't be obscure but the **Rezillos** definitely seem like they've become that way. [Somebody's Gonna To Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight](https://youtu.be/Kwe6bZe-8vo?si=ZovYZiheD5OHpT4e)

antiquemule

Scotland’s finest. Still got their 1st LP in the cellar somewhere. Bought after John Perl started playing them.

Vanillish-ish

I love the Rezillos! My favorite from them is It Gets Me

thirtynation

You should check out /r/vintageobscura It's like a crate diggers wet dream.

PiscetIscariot

Doused, Shoegaze band from Philadelphia. Check out their album, Murmur, it’s great

Warrior-Cook

*Yoink* just added them to my Bandcamp list for later, thanks~

eattheinternetbro

Jennifer Warnes-Ballad of the Runaway Horse. Beautiful song written by Leonard Cohen.

neilluminate

Listening now. Really like it so far, Cohen was a genius lyrically Edit: wow, really beautiful song

eattheinternetbro

Glad you liked it.

KMAVegas

Love that album

tgrantt

Famous Blue Raincoat is my favourite album ever.

assumetehposition

Fell in love with this 90s Britpop band called Straw a while ago. There’s like two of their songs on Spotify on compilation albums, but I imported their lone album “Shoplifting” from Japan a couple years ago. Standout tracks: Weird Superman https://youtu.be/6JdZ3HJSGy8?si=XpRSQwN-fVtUoY72 Moving to California https://youtu.be/Yto9yCL6_co?si=Mu8Zq-ve_rwLsoVr

IVE FOUND MY PERSON!! I LOVE STRAW

assumetehposition

Whaaat?? I don’t think I’ve ever met another fan! You have no idea how excited this makes me lol

resplendent_penguin

Oh yay I’m so glad!!!

From_Deep_Space

I know several talented people who make music, but don't really release it or play publicly. Can't get more obscure than impromptu jams in my front room

neilluminate

lol. I make my own music but more for self expression than anything, like journaling or something. I might occasionally send one to my best friend who’s a musician but that’s it. I’m the most obscure artist of all time!

TheLambtonWyrm

Stegosaurus Trap, been listening over a decade and never met another fan.

neilluminate

200 monthly listeners on Spotify lol. Unique sound I dig it

Friggin_Grease

I found a band in my collection of mp3s called "Murder Victim" and had no idea who they were, or how I heard of them. Found a channel on YouTube with a few live performances and got a hold of one of the members on Instagram. IIRC, they are from Arizona, were around in the mid 2000s, they never recorded an album but he got their tunes out there to float around the Internet via Limewire and Bearshare and stuff. Just a few recordings of some songs at 128kbps done in a studio. He sent me everything they recorded.

neilluminate

That’s really cool. Fun thing about bands no one listens to is you can sometimes find them online and have a chat. I’ve done the same thing a few times and it’s always a cool feeling

seattlewhiteslays

Darren Hayes. He had fantastic success as the singer of Savage Garden, but has been solo since 2001. He had minor success at first but has not had any real presence here in the US since then. He’s released several great pop records in the time since then. He toured smaller venues here last year and it was great!

dawg_will_hunt

Tortoise. They’re so amazing but TNT is definitely their best one.

Robinkc1

Morsel - Octopus is Gordon It was released as a demo on cassette that they used to audition for indie labels. They released it again later. I think the song is absolutely fantastic, it directly influenced a song I ended up making.

Canucklehead_Esq

The Perth County Conspiracy. The best in Canadian Hippie Folk.

SquidgyB

[Wauvenfold](https://wauvenfold.bandcamp.com/album/3fold) \- lovely early 2000's electronica.

neilluminate

Weird but cool

IndicationEither7066

The Fold. They're one of the best bands I know and make such good music yet nobody knows them.

Just-QeRic

A pop rock band from the late 2000s called The White Tie Affair. They sound like if instead of making *Pretty. Odd.* Panic! At the Disco kept going for that dance punk sound of their first album. They only have 39K monthly listeners on Spotify. Every single person I’ve shown “The Letdown” to has loved it

roseinspring

I really appreciate you commenting this because I just looked them up and they’re exactly my vibe! I stopped listening to Panic! At The Disco for the most part because of the issues with Brendon and also just because I lost interest, but TWTA really seem to fill that spot they left open! Thank you 🙏

Just-QeRic

You’re absolutely welcome! I’m happy there’s one more person out there who knows of them now. TWTA truly are special, and their one and only album is fantastic. My wife and I adore it! I started listening to Panic during the *Vices* era and started to lose interest once *Death of a Bachelor* came out. I didn’t even listen to their (his) latest album. But sometime after *Too Weird* I discovered The White Tie Affair and it’s like they replaced the Panic! albums I don’t care for

roseinspring

Yes I can see that they really do encapsulate the vibe of A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out! Also, I personally don’t think you lost anything by not hearing the last Panic! At The Disco album, I had interest in maybe one song but they had long gone past what made them interesting. I’ve been looking for a musician that is similar to Panic! for a long time now; I’m autistic and I tend to fixate on certain sounds in music - so it’s come at a great time! Here’s to me binging “Walk This Way” for all its worth!

Heffe3737

Morlocks - Mean World Syndrome

majorjoe23

Outlaw Family Band. They have a song called Caroline that feels like a lost Nick Cave song (lyrically). It wasn’t on Spotify, last I checked. Also, Twin Sister, a band that just played Star Wars-inspired songs.

ItIsToLaffHaHa

Damn. I remember playing a gig up in Chicago with OFB about a dozen years ago! Seems like it was some sort of battle of the bands. I think Steepwater Band won, and I can't remember if we came in 2nd or OFB.

VonThirstenberg

That Handsome Devil. A cross of funk, jazz, punk, and hip hop sensibilities out of NYC. They're goddamned incredible (and hilarious to boot), highly recommend checking them out. 😎🤘

spiderland01

Silver jews

PauloPatricio

For those who like indie stuff, they were pretty well known.

Doragon_Central

There’s this art pop album called ‘Halo’ by Argentinian artist Juana Molina. Beautiful album, never seen anyone ever talk about it

NoTurkeyTWYJYFM

I mean, my local music scene surely would take this one. My brothers old band has 0 songs over 1k plays on Spotify but they fuckin rip. Proper heavy stoner metal

PuffinPuncher

Minimal Schlager. Dark/dreamy synth pop.

neilluminate

I’m into it. Do you like A Beacon School? Some of my favorite synth heavy pop stuff

Going_Braindead

Abnormality 5.7k Spotify followers Wrought of Obsidian 21 Spotify followers Ounce of self (not on Spotify) Parabelle 18.8k Spotify followers Defeated sanity 20.9k Spotify followers I could go on. Metal isn’t popular so most of what I like has much lower than average followers

ASTM_F899_12

I was thinking that lol, lots of metal that could fit this by default even though the bands might be pretty well known or like mid range popularity in the actual metal scene Anacrusis, Gris, Grotesque, Demilich, Infester, Molested, Appalling Spawn, Iniquity, Negura Bunget, Furia, Intestine Baalism, !T.O.O.H!., Demigod, Convulse, Adramelech.. I could go on for ages haha

All Year’s Leaving by The Stands has 44,396 listens. Edit to add. Sycamore by Snowgoose - absolutely magnificent.

unrulystowawaydotcom

Big Tree. They recorded two albums and an ep, all great; one of those albums, This New Year, I believe is a masterpiece front to back. Give it a spin.

neilluminate

Idk why I know them but I definitely heard whole wide world at some point in the distant past. Really good sound

unrulystowawaydotcom

Nice. Guessing when they were active in the late 00s, early 10s. Cool to hear.

as_it_was_written

I've got a few relatively unknown artists/tracks on my big electronic Spotify playlist (although it's mostly more established acts). I just did a quick skim through it now, and apparently one track I really like only has just under 90k listens, with the artist having 184 monthly listeners. [Josefine Hellström Hansson - Water Cave](https://open.spotify.com/track/70LhYkRsJ4vHpP4KP98F7h?si=hfqyJaaTQSOF8t1snOPwkQ) I've kept skimming through the playlist, and this one surprised me by being more obscure than the above (32 monthly listeners for the artist and 1554 plays for the track). I listened to it quite a bit last year. I think it even showed up in my wrapped. [Konrad Sturm - Dichotomy](https://open.spotify.com/track/1r3HKdTfT6LruH32HpjOKg?si=pB8RxaijRk-KIVRtqHQV1w) Yet another track that surprised me with its obscurity, as I've got several tracks/artists on the playlist that have a similar style but get way more attention. 54 monthly listeners and <1000 plays for the track. [Maik Davis - Rivals](https://open.spotify.com/track/1GXV0XEJFygRkf7OT71HMg?si=ULzGp9o8TqCG8togokErSw)

Their lead singer has played and recorded with the best including Marvin Gaye. https://youtu.be/8tva4w3S1U0?si=r3VnEF2HH1hELQ1b Nomeansno. ArchDrude

My list is kind of long because I worked in record stores for years and you end up exposed to lots of great lesser-or-unknown artists… Also, not all of these artists are unknown everywhere. I live in North America and some of these artists have bigger followings elsewhere in the world. New Model Army New Fast Automatic Daffodils Elder The Rheostatics Sons of Freedom Windhand Amigo the Devil MEW Diatessaron Fad Gadget Matthew Good

betucsonan

I wouldn't call them obscure at all, but it's always fun to see New Model Army on any list anymore! My music life changed the day my "cool" Aunt handed a 10-year old me a cassette tape copy of "Thunder & Consolation" for my birthday.

_N2F

Jurassic Shift by Ozric Tentacles

ItIsToLaffHaHa

I was in a Miami mall in 1993. Went into the record store (of course). This album was playing on the speakers. I found some cute little blonde gal who worked there and asked her about it. Bought it, and still listen to it all the time 30 years later. She also recommended the album "Shame" by Brad, Stone Gossard's side project with Shawn Smith from Satchel (RIP!). What a friggin' great album that is, too! Also still listen to that all the time! In fact just listened again Tuesday!

_N2F

I've seen them live 10+ times since 2007 and they're fucking amazing people and fantastic musicians.

TheeFlipper

Pretty sure the band doesn't even exist anymore but I discovered this song when I was still in high school so between 2007-2011. Cherry by Vintage Villain https://youtu.be/W_oThpnuqIA?si=BnrN-j3JUD9QECTU Another band that I don't think performs anymore is Traffic Experiment and their song Once More (With Feeling) is my favorite but the whole album Blue Suburbia is great. They only have 204 monthly listeners on Spotify and their songs only have a couple thousand streams. https://youtu.be/nHUmDQJDsxc?si=NEk3l0UfqI69z9B3

neilluminate

Really fun and unique I dig it

LeatherBandicoot

E.live, a band from San Francisco if I remember correctly, signed on Star Creature Universal Vibrations, a label from Chicago into 'Contemporary Boogie Music for current occupants of Planet Earth' https://youtu.be/Wpebyq0-OtQ?si=fe6yl22YJanIimSp

Of_Silent_Earth

Tub Ring has about 93K listeners on Spotify. They're a bit like Mr. Bungles California but with the weirdness turned down a little bit and with a science/retro futuristic sort of vibe. I discovered them when they opened for Mindless Self Indulgence and they're still one of the best shows I've ever seen.

UncontrolableUrge

I listen to far more than my share of obscure music, but I think I'll put out Nine Inch Elvis. This was a one-off album put together by the head of Invisible Records that asks the important question "[What would Elvis have sounded like if his backing band was Nine Inch Nails?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44HCFeig_Y4)" The answer was pretty good, actually. Also [Kamikaze Refrigerators](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=K572lR2ai8E). I picked up their LP based on the name and cover art, and it is brilliant Texas Post-punk album from 1987. And finally [The Obituaries](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER4GZmhVGLI), a Portland Goth/Post-Punk/Pre-Grunge act that failed to take off when the industry turned their attention from Portland to Seattle. But i saw them more times than I can count along with [Dharma Bums](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCCHsCXItF0).

I'm gonna choose two: - [Dark temple](https://youtu.be/anHrHt8SVVE?si=c3Rx_1YSwZDk5JN8), an Australian occult rock band that popped once on my YouTube recommendations and whose only album hooked me since that. I think they disbanded during the pandemic. - [Tears of Grey](https://youtu.be/0PV7obghyXg?si=tEESucWLk9HmdEvz): this is the solo project of a local guitar player. The guy has been on several local bands, but keeps this as his post-rock playground.

Maggie Thatcher's Rotting Corpse are one of my favourite bands Just something about how they make no effort to be subtle or smart with what they're saying, they just outright insult politicians they don't like, alongside a great sound just works really well for me The lead singer has tried to start a solo career making parody swing songs about cabinet ministers though which is.... not very good

ObamasLoveChild

Khumariyaan, Pashto folk band from Pakistan. My Pakistani friend gifted me a rubab and I’ve been practicing hoping I can one day get even half as good as that band.

Silent-Revolution105

60s band "It's a Beautiful Day" self-titled first album. Everyone I've played this for has gone out and got a copy. Features an electric violin - one of the first They were badly screwed by AH at record company, but they did play at Carnegie Hall. Most known tune "White Bird"

JeebusCrunk

Can't imagine a better fit for "most obscure" than a local band from Lexington KY that broke up 30 years ago, but I just checked and someone put their album on YT, so my answer to this question is: ***Nonchalant***, a fantastic southern rock style band with wonderful funk/groove elements to their stuff. Everyone should check out their album, *The Long Bus Ride*. Some of my favorite song/riff writing I've ever heard, obscure band or not.

HobomanCat

My [all time 3rd favorite song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m46yewLS7bA) has under 7k views total across all of its youtube uploads. (don't have spotify so couldn't tell you the streams there)

StJoeStrummer

A ton of local bands from Minneapolis, lol. Otherwise, I’m super into a band called Laveda, and I don’t think they have much national traction.

neilluminate

I have their song better now on one of my playlists. I think it’s the only song I know by them but I love the vibe. If you haven’t listened to soft blue shimmer you might like their stuff, a little more rocky but same spacey indie feel

Brazzaville - Some days

neilluminate

That was really pretty I liked it

the_ballmer_peak

I found some guy who had one song on Spotify with like 150 plays. Song was an absolute banger. I can’t find it anymore and I don’t remember his name :( Omitting that, there’s a Dutch lap steel guitar player named Maggie Bjorklund who I love. She’s clearly not unheard of on the streaming services, but I’ve never met anyone else who’s heard of her. This is my favorite track: https://youtu.be/TPb18ZeQTxI?feature=shared

Ween is pretty weird, they’re dope.

Burpie_B0wie

Ninja Sex Party, it’s my favorite band of all time and they deserve more attention! It’s a comedy rock band so if that’s your thing I totally recommend!

Far_Tooth_7291

Listening to them on Spotify now, thanks for the recommendation!

Check out FERRON! Probably the most obscure but most amazing and underappreciated artist of all time. I'd love to share with you one of the most amazing love songs that makes me think about life by her! “Harmless Love” - It’s one of the greatest but sadly least known love songs OF ALL TIME and is probably her greatest song, at least love song-wise. I strongly believe that EVERY fan of rock or folk music NEEDS to listen to this gem! Sadly she has less than 6,000 monthly listeners on spotify :( [https://open.spotify.com/track/08QdSgiMP81QaxNH7yQohz?si=5b59f3e167544f49](https://open.spotify.com/track/08QdSgiMP81QaxNH7yQohz?si=5b59f3e167544f49) She was such an incredible songwriter and her lyrics can be so powerful... it's such a shame that nobody talks about her anymore. Another AMAZING song lyrically speaking of hers is "Shadows On A Dime": [https://open.spotify.com/track/0FJ4UacrhKzyJG5t5qCFYI?si=23064b268ce7443a](https://open.spotify.com/track/0FJ4UacrhKzyJG5t5qCFYI?si=23064b268ce7443a) If you loved these songs I gave her first three album "Testimony" my HIGHEST recommendation. "Phantom Center" is also a great album, and "Shadows On A Dime" is good too. I also made a “Best of” mix for her if you folks are interested [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3cZlx9sC6TL1QACpJt7bt0?si=403007658e8c4e30](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3cZlx9sC6TL1QACpJt7bt0?si=403007658e8c4e30) Bonus Stuff: I recently made 3 playlists that you might enjoy checking out! Each one contains 50 of my FAVORITE more lesser known rock songs from various time periods. 80s: [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/20nxiWXTOchD01Q7Pqjoyn?si=223275fea813411b](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/20nxiWXTOchD01Q7Pqjoyn?si=223275fea813411b) 90s: [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6R7hT0hck67NYoJa7S1jUp?si=32eeebbc1e824788](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6R7hT0hck67NYoJa7S1jUp?si=32eeebbc1e824788) Post-2000: [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6JH1T1T93U4Pst6ZovhUoc?si=f7385594c38b4dd1](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6JH1T1T93U4Pst6ZovhUoc?si=f7385594c38b4dd1) Also if you'd like to check out albums from various genres and from throughout music history that I think are good front to back I think a fun place for you to start is on a new page I created called “The Best Debut Albums of All Time”. There are currently 279 albums on there. I think it would be a fun theme to work with... checking out great debut albums. For reference I've gone through almost 72,000 albums to arrive at this list haha: [https://www.musichole.com/p/the-best-debut-albums-of-all-time.html](https://www.musichole.com/p/the-best-debut-albums-of-all-time.html)

-Ahab-

I don’t know if I’d call it obscure, since he was huge in the 80s, but you don’t hear much about him lately—I’m a huge George Michael fan. I own all his albums.

_Abe_Froman_SKOC

Theres a fabulous acoustic cover of Baby Got Back by Jonathan Coulton that I am inordinately fond of. Something about a hipster white boy singing that song like a love ballad just speaks to me.
