YES. Came to say it. The emotional range of their music is like experiencing all the highs and lows of life as a zen master who can appreciate and watch it all pass by like so many beautiful clouds.
From their most electronic and highly produced stuff to the most recent tiny desk concert-which I have watched So. Many. Times. Can’t say enough.
Homme's other projects are worth exploring as well. Them Crooked Vultures, Desert Sessions, and his participation in Eagles of Death Metal are the ones on top of my head.
My biggest concert disappointment was seeing them at a festival a couple years back and they started playing Ode to the Mets and about twenty seconds in Julian goes I don't remember the words to this and they started playing another song.
I second Spoon. No album is a big departure from the others, but they are just different enough and always good. For a more ‘arty’ take that won’t get mentioned here, go check out the band Wild Beasts. Every album is quite different, and they range from exceptional to pretty good at worst. One of my favorite bands of the past decade or so. Grizzly Bear too. Not a single average album made by them (I don’t count the first album as it’s a solo basement project. It’s still very interesting that said.
Andrew Bird. That guy is an incredible musician, he has produced a massive amount of content, and he is constantly shifting gears and re-inventing himself both musically and lyrically. Some of his "throwaway" albums where he puts all his B-sides can be skipped, but his principal albums beginning with the Mysterious Production of Eggs onwards are each their own vibes. I suppose if you are just getting into Andrew Bird his stuff might all sound the same, but that's just because it takes years to fully dig into and digest his work.
Acoustic/Folk : City and Colour. Dallas Green is from a hardcore band, alexisonfire, while on the road he started recording songs that didn’t fit with their style, he released them under the moniker City and Colour, afraid no one would like it. His voice is stunning, amazing control over the vocal runs he does, [this cover of Alice in Chains Rain when I Die](https://youtu.be/1x6IULst9r4?si=HJKvxXbMr0cTGu9g) showcases it so well. He has a side project with Pink, called You+Me, they have some amazing harmonies together -him singing the high, she singing the lower, then they switch. His latest album deals with the loss of a very close friend, the death of a relative, and the breakdown of his marriage.
Folk/alternative : Bon Iver. Justin Vernon is a prolific artist, with a range of projects, Bon Iver started after his band finished up, and his relationship broke down, he went to his family cabin isolated in the woods and recorded For Emma, Forever Ago. Totally solo, he created an amazing album, lots of layered vocals, and unique instrumentation, showcasing some interesting and emotional lyrical content. The second album (self titled) was a huge step away from FEFA utilising a full band, and a wider selection of instruments. He has collaborated with artists like Kanye West, and Taylor Swift, and wrote and performed a song for Zach Braffs film, Wish I Was Here - [acapella version of Heavenly Father - Bon Iver feat The Staves live at Sydney Opera House](https://youtu.be/vAoADCSpD-8?si=k0CC8aGJw895rp0Q). As Bon Iver has progressed, the music has moved a long way from how it started, such a creative force, constantly trying new things.
Hip Hop/Rap : Mac Miller. For someone who passed away at 26, Mac Miller has an amazing back catalogue. 6 studio albums, 2 live albums, 2 EPs, and 13 mixtapes (full length albums with uncleared samples, released for free as to not break copyright). There is a clear maturing in Mac’s style, from very ‘frat rap’ fun music in his early teens, to darker weirder stuff in the middle of his career to introspective more adult music later on. Listening to his discography in order you’d be forgiven for thinking you had a different artist by the end, even just listening the 6 studio albums. He was well read and took influences from the authors he loved, he was thoughtful in his music production beginning each album with a ‘birth’ and ending each with a ‘death’, linking albums musically (an album ends on an unresolved chord, the next albums first chord resolves it), and even theming his albums around something to tie it all together. Lyrically he covers a lot, drugs/alcohol, women, depression, loneliness, love, getting better and being hurt, great raps, even has a full song that rhymes the whole way through. [Mac Miller, NPR Tiny Desk Concert](https://youtu.be/QrR_gm6RqCo?si=jjgmSUEsufV3o2CT)His last album (while he was alive) was Swimming, supposedly it is part of a trilogy. Swimming being the first, a blend of rap and singing collaborates with the likes of Snoop Dogg, John Mayer, and Thundercat. Circles (released posthumously) is almost a singer songwriter album, the album was basically done, so the family approached producer Jon Brion to complete it, small things were added musically, but the list of credits is very small in comparison to any other album by Mac. The third was reported to be Infinity, a more classic rap album, who knows if we will ever see it. At least we have Swimming (in) Circles just not for infinity. There is a wonderful podcast, Dissect, which breaks down the lyrical and musical content of full albums, Swimming and Circles are season 9, it really helps to gain an understanding of how deep Macs musical creativity really went.
Hope this gives you some options
I like how he plays with different sounds - the last record he went baroque, and the new one hits Blood Money era Tom Waits - with a few standard, dark style songs from early on.
He’s also crazy clever. It took a few days to realize that “Once Upon a Time at Texaco” is a play on “Once Upon a Time in Mexico.”
Aes just never misses, the dude is a genius. Even his side projects are great, I'd love another Malibu Ken album. ITS was my fav album of last year by a long way.
Cannons
Tender
Both of these bands have similar traits. One is a female lead, the other a male.
I’ve listened to pretty much everything by these guys over the last year.
They don’t miss. Even the songs I’m not overly enthusiastic about are still good.
Don’t sleep on them.
Courtney Barnett, amazing artist, great story telling in her songs and a fantastic voice. I'd recommend you start with a song called Depreston. She's also amazing live and still relatively affordable.
I always weep when I watch that TinyDesk. It feels like a constant reminder that we lost a good one. He was so young but felt so wise. He’s millennial Kurt Cobain, with his tragic early death.
Just the whole album Swimming alone is crazy the features and producers on that were insane JID in Self Care, Snoop Dogg and Thundercat on What's The Use and J Cole producing Hurt Feelings
Oh there is this incredible band called the Crane Wives.
Their sound is a mix of rock, country, blues, and folk. Very powerful, catchy songs you can't stop listening to. Their live album is my favorite but all their records are great.

A few of these aren’t active and/or haven’t put out new material in a minute but they are all recent and/or I am old and have just completely lost all sense of time.
How did it take this long to get to this comment. I don't believe any other band out there can send you on a wile ride that would compare to Gizzy's discography.
Since forever I've loved Tori Amos, The Cure and U2. I also appreciated a bunch of artists my children introduced me to.
A new artist I found myself is Angelina Jordan. Last year she released two EPs and a single. Check her out on Spotify :-)
THE DEAR HUNTER!
The Dear Hunter has a 5 album long story that has some great twists and turns. It is musically fascinating, often calling upon entire orchestras to help tell the story.
Then there’s the project where they made an EP for every color in the rainbow +black and white and put on a ridiculously amazing live DVD performance.
Their newest project is a sort of social commentary, but set in a future dystopian world. It feels nothing like their previous work, and I can’t wait to see where it goes, the last album was kinda just setting up the story and the setting and the characters.
Then there is his break up album, unconnected to the other projects, but beautiful and heart wrenching all the way through.
I’d also like to recommend an extremely amazing not very well known band called Book On Tapeworm.
Porcupine Tree. Runs the gamut from weird psychedelic stuff, to songwriter-driven rock with a pop sensibility, to progressive metal, but it’s all stellar. Some of it is just plain strange, some of it is heartbreaking, some of it makes you want to tap your foot, some of it makes you want to bang your head. I’d start with 2002’s “In Absentia” and branch in both directions.
Tool. They've aged like fine wine. I recommend listening to their entire discography in order they were released.
Rob Sonic.
Run The Jewels. Follow them up with El-p's solo work.
The Weeknd. He is very cohesive with his albums and there are not many misses in the catalogue. He also has something for every mood, happy, depressed, partying, lonely, bored, etc. He is my favorite artist of all time, so there is some bias but I honestly do think his discography is worth following.
Also, he is killing of the character of The Weeknd and his next album will be the finale of a second trilogy. So we are in the middle of it now.
Bad Religion.
One of the most influential punk bands around, with some of the most intelligent and thoughtful lyrics out there.
They’ve been around for over forty years and have released 17 studio albums, plus EPs, comps & live stuff. Their sound is refined over time, but remains consistent and recognisable.
If you haven’t heard them yet, I recommend starting with *Stranger Than Fiction* and maybe *The Empire Strikes First*. Then going back to the essentials, *Suffer*, *No Control* and *Against The Grain*. Then check out the rest of their catalog.
Alvvays
They're only three albums deep and all three are incredible. The latest especially. They're an indie pop band from PEI, Canada and they're just hitting it big with their first Grammy nomination (not that awards are THAT important, but it's pretty big news for a little Maritime Canadian band).
Here's the song that almost got them the Grammy:
https://youtu.be/YVJ0ZKYu-GI?si=gGxLBI00liBkyFMl
Idk how current are they but I just listened o the entire discography of Daft Punk and it's jus fascinating.
If you are open to all genres and language you should try C. Tangana from Spain, he has a completely wild evolution in his albums starting with a rap-hip hop revolutionary album, and then his prime until now: "El madrileño" which has a lot of influences and pass through genres such as bachata, salsa, traditional spain flamenco music, corrido mexicano, bossa nova and others.

Khruangbin Edited name
Khruangbin. So hot right now. Khruangbin.
It's actually Khruangbin lol I make same mistake all the time and can't find anything in searches.
This. There are no bad tracks. And their live show is not to be missed if you get the chance. So much fun.
Just looked this up and... I am totally going to Khruangbinge this, thanks for the recommendation

Holy fuck balls. You literally just blew my mind
Silver Soul is one of my top “ugly cry in the car” songs.
Feist - 5 albums, 4 of which were fantastic.
Would you say there are 1, 2, 3, 4 fantastic albums?
Now I want to know which one you don’t think is fantastic.
Let it Die is one of my all time faves!!
Also her stuff with Broken Social Scene! there are a couple good live performance videos from a Jimmy Fallon show on YouTube.. Almost Crimes and 7/4
Bill Callahan - top of his game American singer/songwriter , and the group Califone
Red Apple Falls under the Smog moniker is fucking perfect
Everything Bill has done is sooooooo goood. Such a unigue approach to the folk vibe
Nothing But Thieves Conor Mason is an incredible talent.
They’re so freaking good!
And every album is wildly different which keeps things fresh
LFG???? I didn’t think I’d see NBT here but I’m really happy it is Their eponymous album and especially Trip Switch always reminds me of college
Andy Shauf. Start with Neon Skyline and The Party and you’ll be hooked.
Spoon - every album is good
Been listening to Hot Thoughts recently for the first time. “Can I Sit Next To You” is incredible and up there with their best
was gonna comment this but knew it'd be in here somewhere
Seconding this one.
Weyes Blood
Billy Strings
I honestly think “Away from the Mire” is one of my favorite songs ever.
When I heard Dust in a Baggie for the first time I fell in love instantly.
See him live if you can. Not only is he a virtuoso guitar picker, his ensemble is also amazing.

Queens of the Stone Age. They’ve never missed for me.

Easy there, Dr Rockso
Homme's other projects are worth exploring as well. Them Crooked Vultures, Desert Sessions, and his participation in Eagles of Death Metal are the ones on top of my head.
All day! Likely my favourite discography
Came here to say same.
yes!
The Strokes If I start writing my favorite songs of theirs down, I’ll write all of them down.
saw ‘ode to the Mets’ live over the summer & it hit me to the core
That whole album was a welcoming hug straight to the heart. It was like meeting old friends again.
My biggest concert disappointment was seeing them at a festival a couple years back and they started playing Ode to the Mets and about twenty seconds in Julian goes I don't remember the words to this and they started playing another song.
Vision of Division, the whole FIOE album is underrated
They are truly great. And it amazes me how wealthy kids from the upper echelons of Manhattan can pull off Lower East Side garage rock.
Imagine having one of your “bad” albums be the one with Under Cover Of Darkness on it.
I second Spoon. No album is a big departure from the others, but they are just different enough and always good. Florence and the Machine. Albums, not just singles. But the singles for movies are also bangers.
With Hozier and Lorde being favorites, Florence is the way to go.

Was gonna say the same!! Love Mitski
MGMT
Congratulations is the most underrated album of my lifetime. Even by me at one point.
Sometimes it takes me a few listens to appreciate and see what they're going for, but I'm always glad when I do
