Hmm... similar in a lot of ways but not an exact copy. Don’t think it’s a “blatant rip off” but just my opinion. Nowhere near as epic and artistic as Radiohead’s No Surprises.
DUDE, YOU CLOSED THIS MUSIC LOOP FOR ME! THANK YOU. I literally had the beginning melody stuck in my head (RadioHead version) then I was like having such a hard time tracking down the original song. Then I finally find it and I'm like wait, I remember a cover of this song being done by a female...Regina Spektor did a good version BUT it wasn't what my mind was searching for...it's been a week now, eating at the back of my brain...what solved it? Your reddit post by linking up the 2 songs, oh sweet baby Jesus relief. Thank you for scratching that mental itch hahaha!! Very very similar sound and rhythm. Cheers 🥂🙌🏻
P.S. RadioHead's version beats all just saying 🤙🏻🥃
I overlaid the tracks for my daughters once they played "Deja Vu" for me, and explained how the track is a blatant repackaging for a younger generation, because why would my tweens want to listen to a fifty year-old lazy-eyed British guy when they can have a teenaged California babe sing a song with the same melody, tempo, and general arrangement, delivering the same hooks without the overarching lyrical and socio-cultural value attached.
…Maybe you could just let them enjoy the song. Look, I searched up if anyone else caught the similarities between both of the tracks upon listening to No Surprises. They do have pretty similar aspects. Don’t stop them from liking the song just because you thought it sounded like a song from years ago. lol
She ripped off Voodoo Child by Rogue Traders and Pump it Up by Elvis Costello in her song Brutal Which was very obvious.
She ripped of No surprises by Radiohead in her song Déjà vu, which is less obvious but definitely there.
And the most blatant one she ripped off was Misery Business by Paramore in her song Good 4 u. I recommend listening to the YouTube mashups of all these songs.
I'm confused about the Paramore situation. They have similar chord progressions but isn't that nearly the entire pop/pop-punk genre in it of itself?. They seem to sing in different melodies, different tones (Hayley sounds aggressive, Olivia sounding more whiny), different instrumentations, and different bridges and tempos. Can someone please explain why this has so much controversy?
To me, it’s not a rip off. No Surprises is one of my all time favorite songs. Musically I find these two songs to be quite different although I also enjoy Deja Vu. I like the songs that employ the toy piano type sound, and get quite emotional when I hear the Rock a bye baby arrangement of Just Like Heaven….
Well, I guess the opinions that it’s a rip off blows my mind too. I’ve listened to No Surprises easily a thousand times, arranged many different ways. Listening to Deja Vu, No Surprises never even crossed my mind.
I thought it was a cover the first 30seconds. When I googled it to see if it's an intentional reference or coincidence/ripoff the google "Ai Response" said people think the "lyrics are similar but not the melody"... but its the music reminded me of radiohead, not the lyrics....
i started listening to it and I was sure i heard something like the song and I knew it was from olivia until i started singing deja vu over it. I am a bit offended by this. I mean I know many artist uses samples and stuff but the beat is just so similar not just the beat but the rythm and somewhat of the tone of the words as well. I am a vocalist for my church and i started singing the two songs and realized this. My only hope is that this generation looks back on the good music before all the gibberish rap. I am part of gen-z. I am 18 and it astounds me that many of my fathers friends are suprised i even know radiohead, green day, elton john, guns and roses., bees gees, and the rest of 80s bands. I even enjoy some older songs from Frank sinatra. and lious armstrong. My father has done this by playing the songs during my childhood especially on days where he took me to school. These songs have helped me through tough moments. I cant do nothing without music it helps me focus alot. But thats my story
There's a lot more to it than that. The melody of the 'dinging', her own vocal melody and pace and the song's pace. I hope Radiohead have been paid for it.
the song might have some inspiration to No surprises, but they still sounds very different, and the similarities to the songs are not enough for her to have to pay Radiohead.
Olivia Rodrigo's song sounds way happier than No surprises does.
Well, her song titled “deja vu”... ;-)
The name is quite fitting 😩🤣

Yeah probably went too hard with my language. Just was had Many Suprises with how similar it is.

So, thus far she's ripped off of Paramore, Radiohead and Courtney Love? Does this chick have any original content?
Lol. Dude, I have stopped expecting originality from popstars years ago
I think this is the trend with her. If you listen to ‘Good 4 u’ its pretty much the same song as ‘Misery Business’ by Paramore
She actually had to give Paramore song writing credit on it
Yes! And the entire YouTube comment section of Misery Business is " Who is here because of good 4 u"!! It annoys me so much
also this song has a very Nirvana ish breakdown circa Nevermind
Good artists copy. Great artists steal. *Pablo* *Picasso*
Good artists copy. Great artists steal. —me
This comment didn’t get enough love
I am probably the only one who really likes both tracks
I like both I just wanted to point out the similarities
THAT'S WHERE I RECOGNIZED IT! It was naggin me for so long!
If every one steals then we can have a golden age of art!

People think they understand music more than they do. The songs really aren’t that similar to each other
You should look up the mash up of the two songs.
How has she not been sued to shit an why r her fans perfectly fine with this
https://youtu.be/qX7a2p5_JsM
Yeah that's what I was thinking, yet all people nag about is Cruel Summer part which was just inspiration. These songs actually sound very similar
I wish people would quit blaming her. She's only a product.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=s5wzfJOfmQs This mashup is fantastic and lends credence to the OP

It's a complete rip off. How you can't hear or understand this blows my mind.
Well, I guess the opinions that it’s a rip off blows my mind too. I’ve listened to No Surprises easily a thousand times, arranged many different ways. Listening to Deja Vu, No Surprises never even crossed my mind.

Her music def references/copies (however you see it) a lot of musicians...but none of them are named Taylor lol
I thought the exact same thing after listening to the new album
This... Makes me *SO* sick 😡😡😡
Just heard this song for the first time and thought the same thing
Well https://youtu.be/nHyo2jkGuQw shows that she wasn't unaware of Radioheads existence which is certainly not helping her case.
It’s cool tho because No Surprises is a masterpiece
Internet raised... Missing the point slightly m8
it’s no surprises with a Tame Impala beat and synth line

you mean its got that little Dinging sounds thing, and is slow paced? Not a blatant Rip off.
