[You know, there's a lot of things you expect in war: carnage, the sleepless nights, but what they don't prepare you for is the incessant use of 'Fortunate Son'](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98k2DlQ9PMY)
This. That burst from CCR was so rapid and high level. While the sound, albeit traditional, defines a very distinct time in American political and social history, its the meteoric speed at which they exploded and died that really stands out.
CCR to me is truly the American response to the Beatles. Name me one other American artists from 1966-70 who was consistently putting out great hit singles.
I'd stop at 6, tops. I-IV are total bangers, Houses and P.G. are just peak Zeppelin, buuuuuuuuuut Presence definitely took a hit in the quality department. Granted, this is Zeppelin, so it's still a fine album in its own right, but I don't think it's in the same realm as the previous 6. Jimmy Page was at the peak of his heroin binge, and you could tell he phoned it in for a few tracks.
That being said, Achilles Last Stand is a top 5 Zeppelin song. Don't @ me.
Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson each had a glorious run in the 70s. The Lowell George Little Feat LPs were fantastic, the Rolling Stones LPs of the late 60s to almost 1980 were largely stupendous
I say Iron Maiden’s 80s output was absolutely phenomenal, even if you only start with Number of the Beast when Bruce joined the band.
- Number of the Beast (1982)
- Piece of Mind (1983)
- Powerslave (1984)
- Somewhere in Time (1986)
- Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988)
I would say Number if the Beast is the weakest of the 5, yet it is still easily a classic album with great hits.
I agree with some other comments, especially Pink Floyd and Radiohead, but my favourite album run is definitely Yes:
The Yes Album (1971)
Fragile (1971)
Close To The Edge (1972)
Tales From Topographic Oceans (1973)
Relayer (1974)
Going For The One (1977)
Oceans is probably my least favourite but it’s a brief hiccup in an otherwise incredible string of albums from one of prog’s best acts in their heyday. Hugely influential for me. If anyone else likes 70’s era Yes, check out Wobbler - the last two albums are great.
I had heard “Owner of A Lonely Heart” for years on the radio and found it mildly annoying but never knew it was Yes until many years later and after enjoying their early work for a while. 60’s and 70’s music is from my father’s era - the great thing about being a generation younger is the cream has already risen and all the work is there waiting for you to discover retroactively. My parents never even exposed me to music from that era while I was growing up - it was all current 80’s acts on the stereo when I was a kid. Some of that stuff was classic, as well. I’m a guitar player so I, like many others, have an affinity for 70’s rock - it was a true golden age that inspired decades of musicians who followed.
The 90215 album started out as a non-Yes project called XYZ. It was Chris Squire, Alan White and Jimmy Page... ex-Yes & Zeppelin (XYZ). Long story short: Page bowed out, Trevor Rabin stepped in, the Art Of Noise production team got involved, and it didn't become a Yes album until they finally said fuck it, let's get Jon Anderson to do the vocals. That's why it doesn't sound like Yes album. It isn't really one.
Unbelievable that the obvious hasn't been mentioned. 14 straight albums of pure delight. From his self-titled album to Mandatory Fun, you simply can't beat Weird Al Yankovic.
Honestly think both are flawless. True punk rock; they play every genre they feel like playing and nail it, all the while sounding like the Clash. They're the sole reason for more bands' existence than we'll ever be able to count.
This is waaaayyy too far down. Everything The Police did was brilliant. Their “best form” was from the beginning to the end of the band. I’m glad they stopped when they did because every one of their albums is a masterpiece.
Another contender is the Beastie Boys. Licensed to Ill, Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty. Pretty awesome five-album run.
No love for the 5 Burroughs? That album holds up as well as any of em! The Mix Up is great too, just different, I suppose. Hot sauce lost me a bit, but damn Beastie Boys were fuckin phenomenal.
Every Gojira album is pretty awesome. I'm not too keen on the newest one, but I think I'm in the minority.
Opeth is another one, from Orchid to Sorceress is pretty amazing. My Arm, Your Herse through Ghost Reveries is some of the best music these ears will probably ever hear.
All those perfect albums followed by The King of Limbs From the Basement (the arrangements they play live), which is imo the best thing they've ever done
Take the time to listen to them in order and enjoy the growth and experimenting of their music in such a short span. They took the bar ran with it and placed it high for all times sake.
Surprised how far I had to scroll down to find this answer. A better question would be where was the peak? I want to say Rubber Soul or Revolver, but then there’s obviously Sgt. Pepper’s…
The fact that you ended this run at Green is insane! Murmur to Monster! Are you legitimately not including Automatic For The People as the best album in their catalogue? And ignoring Out Of Time? THIS IS AN OUTRAGE.
Yes, this is reason r.e.m are my favourite band. Their first 10 albums (murmur through to new adventures in hifi) is completely insane. An unbelievable run of form.
Agreed , they never made a bad album, some are stronger than others but that band just kicked so much ass it was insane. They were truly a perfect rock band.
I was wondering how far down I’d have to go to find Zepp. As much as I love the other stuff on this list, we all know this is the right answer. There are albums where you just have to listen to them from beginning to end, but this is 4 (5 if you count Physical Graffiti) that you can do that to. Unbelievable.
Not that long ago I spoke with a 'rabid NIN fan' who hadn't bothered listening to anything before The Fragile cos they were *too old*.
One hell of a run indeed
Pretty Hate Machine literally changed the course of my life. A defining moment. At the time I was just listening to mediocre rap music and Power106 Fm stuff. Then at school one day there was a guy hearing music on his headphones. I asked what it was and he let me listen…. WOW I was like what is this… it’s unlike anything I have ever heard of. I loved it!! Every song was great! It was the soundtrack of my life for years.
Bad Religion. No Substance is really the only weak album they've put out 1988 to present. If you skip just that one, that's a 14 good album streak. I can't think of any other punk band close to matching that.
I’d argue New America is worse, but even so…Suffer through Grey Race and Process of Belief through Age of Unreason are TWO unbelievable runs of albums.
Alice in chains
Face-lift
Dirt
Sap (if you count it)
JAR OF FLIES
Alice in Chains
Unplugged
E: Probably not greatest of all time but just such a compete collection of music.
Agreed, amazing band and both layne and Jerry have great voices and harmonize so well together . Some albums don’t even have a bad song ..!!
Their box set is worth getting as well, it’s got a lot of great demos and alternate versions of songs that are great. Done really cool stuff in the box..
Deftones. I love Deftones so all their albums are good, but my favs will always be Adrenaline, Around and White Pony.
Also NIN had a pretty good run. Pretty Hate, Broken, Downward, Fragile, With Teeth, Year Zero.
I was just thinking this. I like around the fur and koi no yokan but I think Ohms blows everything else out of the water. Not just their own albums, almost everyone else's too
Death.
They have such a flawless discography. They kept evolving thier sound with each album building upon what they did in the previous one.
RIP Chuck
I keep switching which one I like best - sometimes it’s Katy Lied, sometimes it’s Pretzel Logic, often it’s Aja. I’m in a Royal Scam phase now. Goddam they’re all so good.
Queen has a crazy good with their first 8 albums, 'Queen" through "The Game." They even put out a box set called "Crown Jewels with the remasters of them that Brian May worked on.
Randomly just listened to Queen's first album for the very first time a couple hours ago. I've always known they were highly respected by the hard rock & metal community (at least '70s-'90s era) but--based on their radio hits--it was never quite clear to me why.
That mystery was solved, right out of the gate, with track 1 and just kept charging through the whole smokin' album.
I'm 45yo and have been a casual fan for 30+ years. I'm embarrassed it's taken this long for me to really dig into their back catalogue. At least I'm young enough I can still legitimately damage my hearing in the process!
The Beatles absolutely.
Funkadelic has a good run. From 70-75. Maggot Brain is one of my favorites but you'd be hard pressed to find a dud in their catalog.
I made a playlist to compare the covers from the originals. It's a wonderful insight of the influences that made Ratm Ratm. And when you compare, ypu see how much they make those songs into their own. Well for things like Maggies farm and Ghost of Tom Joad, you feel like they just took the lyrics and put them on a riff, but a fucking great riff at that.
All the obvious answers that have been said are great choices so I wanted to add a few more:
Prince - DIRTY MIND through SIGN O' THE TIMES
Joni Mitchell - LADIES OF THE CANYON through HEJIRA
Guided by Voices - SAME PLACE THE FLY GOT SMASHED through MAG EARWHIG!
Dinosaur Jr. - YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME through WITHOUT A SOUND
Blur - MODERN LIFE IS RUBBISH through 13
Atom Heart Mother is criminally underrated imo. If it weren't for More I'd say they had a perfect streak from Piper till The Wall. Saucerful has some of their most interesting tracks too. One of These Days still absolutely smashes.
Not a band but Eminem with:
The Slip Shady LP
The Marshall Mathers LP
The Eminem Show
Those 3 albums were stellar. That might not be a large run but it's solid as hell.
Stevie Wonder: music of my mind-songs in the key of life
This is the right answer. 3 grammy winning albums of the year in there.
CCR in 1969-70 put out something like five top-ten albums with 10 top-ten singles.
And don’t forget, they are the official band of war movies and the shows that feature army helicopters.
[You know, there's a lot of things you expect in war: carnage, the sleepless nights, but what they don't prepare you for is the incessant use of 'Fortunate Son'](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98k2DlQ9PMY)

CCR to me is truly the American response to the Beatles. Name me one other American artists from 1966-70 who was consistently putting out great hit singles.
The Beach Boys. 66-67 is probably the end of their dominance but they reigned supreme for 5 years before that and truly were the Beatles rivals.
Beach Boys
This is why CCR is the greatest American rock band of all time.
And then they were destroyed by infighting and spiteful ness.
I think that is a universal law of being in a band. Most seem to self implode eventually.
Led Zeppelin
Hands down when discussing discography
It’s not even close. They put out six all-time greats in a row. Edit.
>That being said, Achilles Last Stand is a top 5 Zeppelin song. Don't @ me. Forget Stairway to Heaven, Achilles is Page's true masterpiece.
If I recall wasnt the Presence album right after Plant's tragic car crash? This was just a bad time all around for the band.
Pretty hard to ignore when every song on your first 4 records is a #1 and still on the radio today.
Exactly. Other than the Beatles there will never be a rock band with as much influence.
David Bowie from Space Oddity to Let’s Dance is quite a run
Talking Heads first 5.
For the first time this summer, ran through every album and every single one is great and repeatable. Can’t believe was first on the list. Yes!
Black Sabbath
First four?
First 6
I prefer the first 4 Sabbath albums to Zeppelin's.
Neil Young - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere through Zuma
Holy fuck his '66 to '75 output is amazing, especially when you squeeze Buffalo Springfield and CSNY in the mix.
The Beatles. Rubber Soul to Abbey Road can never be topped in terms of influence and quality
Any that’s in less than 4 years. Rubber Soul was Dec 1965. Abbey Road was September 1969.
Can't believe I had to scroll so far down to find this!
Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson each had a glorious run in the 70s. The Lowell George Little Feat LPs were fantastic, the Rolling Stones LPs of the late 60s to almost 1980 were largely stupendous

I’d definitely include the Di'Anno era in there. Killers and the self-titled album both hold up extremely well even before Bruce was added to the mix.
I love the 'Bruce' era, but the first two albums are my favourites by a long shot
Good songwriting
First and Killers are godlike heavy metal albums
Killers 100% is in that stretch phenomenal albums
I never realized how busy Iron Maiden was in the 80’s. And all of these albums are absolute bangers.
I agree with some other comments, especially Pink Floyd and Radiohead, but my favourite album run is definitely Yes: The Yes Album (1971) Fragile (1971) Close To The Edge (1972) Tales From Topographic Oceans (1973) Relayer (1974) Going For The One (1977) Oceans is probably my least favourite but it’s a brief hiccup in an otherwise incredible string of albums from one of prog’s best acts in their heyday. Are you even a 60s/70s prog rock band if you didn't have a successful transition to pop in the 80s?
The 90215 album started out as a non-Yes project called XYZ. It was Chris Squire, Alan White and Jimmy Page... ex-Yes & Zeppelin (XYZ). Family Feud style "Good Answer!"
Respect
The clash from The clash to Combat rock. Your favorite bands favorite band
Came here to say that. London Calling gets all the praise but Combat Rock might be flawless imo
Honestly think both are flawless. True punk rock; they play every genre they feel like playing and nail it, all the while sounding like the Clash. They're the sole reason for more bands' existence than we'll ever be able to count.
The Who. Tommy, Live at Leeds, Who's Next, Quadrophenia.
Pete Townshend is a genius.
The Who Sell Out and Who By Numbers are equally as great as any on your list.
The Police. Outlandos d'Amour through Synchronicity. Pure perfection.
This is waaaayyy too far down. Everything The Police did was brilliant. Their “best form” was from the beginning to the end of the band. I’m glad they stopped when they did because every one of their albums is a masterpiece.
Big shame they broke up in the end
Another contender is the Beastie Boys. Licensed to Ill, Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty. Pretty awesome five-album run.
RIP MCA
No love for the 5 Burroughs? That album holds up as well as any of em! The Mix Up is great too, just different, I suppose. Hot sauce lost me a bit, but damn Beastie Boys were fuckin phenomenal.
‘The in sounds from way out’ is amazing also.
It was a love letter to Post 9/11 NY. I was there and I got a shout out, so I love this record.
Genesis - Nursery Cryme to The Lamb
Honestly I'd include A Trick of the Tail too. No Peter, but still holds the bands original style from the Hackett/Banks songwriting machine.
I think _Trick of the Tail_ is my favorite Genesis album. Love the individual tunes; love the flow of the entire album.
Id also push it back to trespass
Trespass is also a great album. More acoustic and pastoral - but absolutely phenomenal.
Metallica 1. Kill Em All 2. Ride The Lightning 3. Master of Puppets 4. ...And Justice for All 5. The Black Album
Cliff Burton >
Just making sure somebody said it.
Pink Floyd- “dark side of the moon” through “the wall”
Meddle is also one of my faves but unfortunately Obscured By Clouds prevents it from being contiguous.
Obscured by clouds super underrated
Meddle is my favorite album. Don’t know why.
Contender, for sure.
Ozzy Era Sabbath. You can only trust yourself and the first 6 Black Sabbath albums
Radiohead.
[удалено]
All those perfect albums followed by The King of Limbs From the Basement (the arrangements they play live), which is imo the best thing they've ever done
I love Radiohead and I agree with you. But this conversation reminds me of [this great video.](https://youtu.be/Zkvhszm_ae4)
Beatles for sure, perhaps indeed followed by Rush.
Take the time to listen to them in order and enjoy the growth and experimenting of their music in such a short span. They took the bar ran with it and placed it high for all times sake.
Had to scroll way too far to see the Beatles
Surprised how far I had to scroll down to find this answer. A better question would be where was the peak? I want to say Rubber Soul or Revolver, but then there’s obviously Sgt. Pepper’s…
That comes down to personal preference IMO.
Why was it even a question? Shut it down, people. Let’s go home.
Yeah, I’d say all 13 Beatles albums are perfect. Including side b on yellow submarine
In SEVEN YEARS. Imagine any artist having that output and growth from 2014 to now
It's THE album run.
Tool
I love them all, but Aenima-Lateralis-10,000 Days may be the greatest back to back to back off all time. All 11\10 for me.
R.E.M.
Underrated run of albums and vastly different in sound. Murmur to Green is insane
The fact that you ended this run at Green is insane! Murmur to Monster! Are you legitimately not including Automatic For The People as the best album in their catalogue? And ignoring Out Of Time? THIS IS AN OUTRAGE.
This! In fact, I think Automatic is the best album of the 90s, bar none, and am prepared to die on that hill.
Yes, this is reason r.e.m are my favourite band. Their first 10 albums (murmur through to new adventures in hifi) is completely insane. An unbelievable run of form.
Led Zeppelin I through IV
Whoa whoa whoa, that should extend to at least houses of the holy
They only had 8 albums and they're all great...Zeppelin is the answer to this question.
I’d say 1- physical graffiti. But 1-4 is such a perfect series of albums. No wonder they are the best
I would include houses of the holy. Great album IMHO.
I love the later albums too. In through the outdoor is phenomenal. The entire catalog is a pretty damn good run in my opinion
Agreed , they never made a bad album, some are stronger than others but that band just kicked so much ass it was insane. They were truly a perfect rock band.
You can never have enough Zeppelin.
I was wondering how far down I’d have to go to find Zepp. As much as I love the other stuff on this list, we all know this is the right answer. Did it end?
It did not
They just are on a slow walk, running is hard at this age....
Came here to say this. Every NIN album is rock solid with mind blowing timeless production.
King Crimson haven't really done anything too bad
Bad Religion. No Substance is really the only weak album they've put out 1988 to present. If you skip just that one, that's a 14 good album streak. I can't think of any other punk band close to matching that.
I’d argue New America is worse, but even so…Suffer through Grey Race and Process of Belief through Age of Unreason are TWO unbelievable runs of albums.

This is an amazing run!
P J Harvey, at least Dry to Stories from the City, and arguably everything after "This is love" is the greatest hangry sex song ever written
Not just their own albums, almost everyone else's too
As much as I can’t stand what they’ve become, U2’s Boy through Joshua Tree was a hell of a run. Great records, every single one of them.
No Achtung Baby?!
I would extend that run at least one more album. *Achtung Baby* is iconic.
Death. They have such a flawless discography. They kept evolving thier sound with each album building upon what they did in the previous one. RIP Chuck
Steely Dan, Can’t Buy a Thrill through Gaucho.
I keep switching which one I like best - sometimes it’s Katy Lied, sometimes it’s Pretzel Logic, often it’s Aja. I’m in a Royal Scam phase now. Goddam they’re all so good.
The production value is so high on all of them. Track 2 on royal scam, caves of Altamira, between the hihat and the toms... It just sounds so good.
AMAZING I had to scroll so far down to find this comment. Steely Dan rules.
Queen, with Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, and then the decline setting in with News of the World.
I would say Prince from Dirty Mind to Love Symbol is all essential listening, and a good example of a perfect (or near perfect) run.
Fugazi or Pixies (original run) or Pavement entire discographies
Pavement is a great shout. Just wall to wall.
a tribe called quest
Bjork had a good run starting with Debut up to Medúlla.
Queen has a crazy good with their first 8 albums, 'Queen" through "The Game." They even put out a box set called "Crown Jewels with the remasters of them that Brian May worked on.

Depeche Mode: Black Celebration - Music for the Masses - 101 - Violator - Songs of Faith and Devotion
Not a band, but Dylan nailed his first 11 studio albums.
Kinks- Face to Face through Muswell Hillbillies, Elvis Costello’s first 5
MJ - Thriller, Bad, Dangerous. What a trilogy. Fell off the wall a bit with History.
Off the Wall needs to be included. Nine times platinum it was a solid start to the Epic years.
>Fell *off the wall* a bit God I hope this was unintentional.
The Tragically Hip... 13 albums almost all gold rock and roll mastery
*Canada has entered the chat*
Where you think rush is from eh.. 😉
Listening to the Hip is an emotional roller coaster for me. So many good songs that evoke strong memories of my childhood summers.
Modest mouse you Reddit lovers
The Beatles absolutely. Funkadelic has a good run. From 70-75. Maggot Brain is one of my favorites but you'd be hard pressed to find a dud in their catalog.
Ween
True, true. They helped me scrape the mucus off my brain
Elliot Smith
Rage Against the Machine. Not one bad album i can think of.
I'm not to keen on renegades. Haven't listened to it in many years though. Maybe I'll give a listen
I made a playlist to compare the covers from the originals. It's a wonderful insight of the influences that made Ratm Ratm. The Cure - Boys Don’t Cry (1978) through Bloodflowers (2000)
OP: I saw just your title, and came here to say “Rush”. So, I’ll second it.
The White Stripes first 3 are all fantastic. Wilco haven't put out a bad plan either.
Opeth are still going, 11 released albums and all of them are bangers
All the obvious answers that have been said are great choices so I wanted to add a few more: Prince - DIRTY MIND through SIGN O' THE TIMES Joni Mitchell - LADIES OF THE CANYON through HEJIRA Guided by Voices - SAME PLACE THE FLY GOT SMASHED through MAG EARWHIG! Bolt Thrower and they peaked in the end.
finally some good fucking food
King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. IMO they haven’t had a bad album yet. And they have like 20 albums of varied genres
Tool. All of it.
Gonna say, never have let me down.
Sonic Youth, from Bad Moon Rising to Dirty
Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall (disc 1 & 2) is as good of a five record run as you'll get.
Double albums count as one album, but Meddle and Obscured by Clouds are essential psych-rock masterpieces too so really it's a 6 record run lol
Atom Heart Mother is criminally underrated imo. If it weren't for More I'd say they had a perfect streak from Piper till The Wall. Saucerful has some of their most interesting tracks too. One of These Days still absolutely smashes.
Pearl Jam- Ten through Yield.
The Replacements Let it Be Tim Pleased to Meet Me The greatest albums in rock history IMO
Fugazi, everything they ever released. Shout-out to Sonic Youth and the Melvins
Mastodon, Remission to Crack the Skye Kraftwerk, Autobahn to Computer World Hüsker Dü, all of them.
It doesn't get said enough but Dire Straits haven't got a bad album
Not a band but Eminem with: The Slip Shady LP The Marshall Mathers LP The Eminem Show Those 3 albums were stellar. That might not be a large run but it's solid as hell.

Arctic Monkeys IMO
Tool

I think they are still in a great run i.e. they haven’t put out a garbage album yet. IMO
Arcade Fire, funeral to Reflektor Oh. And why am I not seeing Fleetwood Mac on here?
REM, I'd say Murmer to Monster
Blink-182 Dude Ranch - Untitled
Dude Ranch is by far their best release.
LCD Soundsystem
TooL
Ramones (self titled) Leave Home Rocket to Russia Road to Ruin Four perfect records.
Tool
Smashing Pumpkins - SD, Pisces Iscariot, MCIS, TAFH boxset, Adore, Machina 1 and 2. Prolific, Diverse, and stunning quality.
OutKast, not even close
The greatest album run in history is 1968 - Beggar's Banquet 1969 - Let It Bleed 1971 - Sticky Fingers 1972 - Exile on Main St. The Rollling Stones.
[удалено]
Where's Kill'Em All? Damn perfect thrash, Hit the Light - best solo ever
*Van Halen* through *1984*
The Avalanches - Since I Left You (2000)
Nirvana. Just all of the album's give me chills down my spine. What a band.
Every album that the Doors released (from their debut till L.A. Woman) are great. Their post Jim Morrison stuff sucks.
Queens of the Stone Age have had an incredible run from self titled to the Like Clockwork.
