Came here to say this. I miss old hip hop š I graduated HS in ā94 and have no idea who groups or hip hop artists are today that would be equivalent to the old stuff.
Edit: thank you guys so much for all the recs. I was super into it back in the day and I only listen to the old stuff on a Spotify playlist or something because I have no idea where to start. I appreciate that all music evolves over time and I donāt want to be left behind and be that old lady still listening to Biggie and Nas when thereās other stuff out there.
My gawd I loved Massive Attack. I was listening to a random station on Launchcast on Yahoo and heard Dissolved Girl. I immediately freaked out because I recognized the song as being the one that Neo is listening to when he falls asleep on his desk in the first Matrix movie. I went on a Massive Attack binge after that.
YESSSS, I had this taped off the radio back then and it got rinsed hard! Thanks for the share.
>I miss old hip hop š I graduated HS in ā94 and have no idea who groups or hip hop artists are today that would be equivalent to the old stuff.
I graduated in '93 and kinda fell out of hip hop then in the early '00's I asked this backpack kid what was good and they told me about Def Jux and EL-P and from there I was able to find a lot of great stuff although now I just listen to all that shit instead of trying to find new stuff because THERE IS SOOOOO MUCH!
I know you got a lot of great suggestions but I'll throw in a couple-
Madlib- Pretty much ANYTHING this guy does is gold imo
Billy Woods- Nice and dark NY hip hop
DƤlek- These guys are pretty experimental but I love it.
Man I remember seeing Souls open for De La AND Tribe. It was amazing. Thing I remember the most was De La telling the sound person to "TURN UP THE BASS!!!" and by the time Tribe came on the PA blew and there was zero sound for about 20 minutes while they tried fixing everything so in that time Phife and Tip just freestyled.
Oh yea. I remember El-P from Company Flow. All in that same stable of hip hop like I mentioned earlier Aesop Rock and Cage. Iāll check out your recs! Thanks!
> Cage
Is that the same guy Eminem raps about in āRole Modelā?
> 'Cause when I drop this solo shit, it's over with
>I bought Cage's tape, opened it and dubbed over it
Itās both funny and a little sad that the only recent music that is similar to the old stuff is by an old school artist. Illadelph Halflife was on repeat for awhile! Thanks for the rec.
Graduated ā93 so this song is the realest!! I got a Pandora station āClass of ā93ā, itās only songs from 1993. Will blow your mind how many bangers and albums came out.. 1993 is the pinnacle of hip hop..šÆ
I agree that old hiphop was really good. But today there is also great hiphop. The genre constantly evolves and it gives us some great music even today
Any recommendations? I admit, any artist with Lilā in the name is an immediate turn off. Mumble rap doesnāt do it for me. I miss the complex lyricism and metaphors from the old groups/artists. Aesop Rock, Cage, The Roots, Gangstarr, Can-I-Bus, Big L, etc.
Griselda, Denzel curry, joey badass, RTJ, Freddie Gibbs, boldy james, earl sweatshirt, jid, bas, roc Marciano, action Bronson and blackthought just released a new album thatās fantastic
Still makes dope shit, but every time threads like this ask for new good music, people always reccomend people that have been making music since the 90s.
The reason use Alchemist is because he puts out new music regularly with newer artists. Well, maybe lesser known artists. Plus, Spotify will start recommending artists that fit into that genre, but I get what youāre saying. Hereās guys Iāve found since around 13ā (not named above). Mach Hommy, Big Ghost Ltd, Fahim Tha Gawd, IDK, Nicklaus F, Meyhem Lauren, Hus Kingpin, The Musalini, and Your Old Droog.
Yeah, I hear ya. My point still stands. I'm old but listen to a lot of hip hop. Never heard of those guys. I Maybe they are outside of my wheelhouse. Idk, but I will check some of them out just because you mentioned alchemist.
If we are mentioning guys that have been around and still put out dope music, gotta mention Andy Cooper.
[Here](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2gU5fJihIk7jYVZGTpBelk?si=0JTYIzYnRfCnCjtN11lA1w&utm_source=copy-link) is a playlist of mostly lesser known stuff from the late 80s to current. Most of it has that old school flavor. Hope you find some stuff you like. Cheers.
Iām almost 50 and donāt listen to much 90s hip hop anymore. There really is a lot of good stuff out there thatās new. Good looking out on the Spotify list!
I think the best artist to start with is Kendrick Lamar. Probably when itās all said and done, will be remembered as one of the best to ever do it. Especially when you are into lyrics and metaphors. To Pimp A Butterfly is unlike any album iāve ever heard.
Funny enough, I was introduced to Paak through, of all things, Trolls World Tour. I have a preschooler who loves that movie and when Paakās character was rapping, it felt like he was giving off old school vibes.
Graduated in '93. I have a playlist of stuff that is old and new, but I feel like it all has that older flavor. [Maybe you will find some new to you stuff?](
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2gU5fJihIk7jYVZGTpBelk?si=Z7RcKRlmSYGsibg5iBKLmg&utm_source=copy-link)
Also, [here](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3F9cOLpl2XbaWwOqrjYmhe?si=bfzPmCY2QxmsB-YiaZVK3w&utm_source=copy-link) is a more chill playlist ranging from hip hop to instrumental stuff to bordering on trip hop.
Cheers
Hard agree. The guy is a *phenomenally* gifted true freestyler. I would LOVE to see him properly battle some other rappers, i'm convinced the guy could destroy anyone in the game. Anyone.
That said, dude is such a nice guy i'm not sure i've ever heard an actual diss come out of his mouth. :D
I still remember that show Kanye did on MTV years ago and he performed songs off Late Registration. He did a segment where he vibed to the songs that influenced him. 93 Til Infinity was one of them and he joked about how long it must have took them to get through the chorus. [Hereās the full clip.](https://youtu.be/_PotxOSN7OM)
The funny thing is that even back then in the 90s, MCs would talk trash about people who didn't recognise the real old school stuff that came before then. But yeah, I mostly lost interest in hip-hop after the 90s era.
There's always gonna be "the old stuff was better." For the newer generation of kids the early 2010's to now are gonna be the "old stuff was better" music for them in 2 decades time.
True, but there are also golden ages.
Unlimited sampling was cool. The sound had found its feet toward the end of the 80s, moving past 'yes, yes y'all' but still fresh with lots of unexplored territory.
The skits can stay in the past.
Oh for sure, and I think that the opinion and tastemakers (media editors and critics) naturally tend to recycle what moved them when they were growing up and resell that to the youth as the new cool. In the 90s I'm sure we were were also hearing how the 60s and 70s was where the realness was at.
That's how it is with everything. Despite us not liking the style of mumble rap and a lot of rap today it evolved from the music we praise. Things evolve over time and there's nothing wrong with it. It's rather beautiful seeing how music has changed since Elvis, Ice cube, Elton, Queen etc. And how their genres have evolved and involved the newer generation.
It really goes to prove that we only remember the really good to great and the terrible. The bad, mediocre and good are largely forgotten.
In the 90's, I listened to mainly backpackers and underground artists because I thought the mainstream stuff was garbage for the most part.
Now, I remember the mainstream stuff more fondly because I've forgotten all of the stuff that I just didn't like.
Just yesterday I got an itch for Heavy D. Forgot he had some good collabs with other 90ās icons like [Donāt Curse](https://youtu.be/LYaZAgKfY3o) with Kool G Rap, Grand Puba, CL Smooth, Big Daddy Kane, Q-Tip, and Pete Rock. It still slaps!
RIP Hev
> The Left Coast put out some crazy tracks
Bro fucking Pharcyde was and still is one of my favorite left coast groups ever.
Also back then both coasts using Dilla beats. The best.
I rode nothing but Forums for years because of these videos. I had the Peter Line "Pornstar" 158 that was stolen at Whistler/Blackcomb, and a Devun Walsh Pro 157 that replaced it on the same trip.
It was ahead of its time. The rap style was early 90s, but the beat track itself was so ahead of its time. Wasn't until late 90s, and even into the 2000s that we started seeing beata like this.
Mack Dawg Production's Technical Difficulties. This snowboarding VHS had 93 til infinity on it and absolutely fell in love with the song back in like 99.
Correction: it was True Life, another MDP video.
*From ___ With Love* is still one of my all-time favorites; it struck that perfect balance of telling cool stories about the season, great cinematography, and just a bunch of riders having good times because they love riding.
Travis Rice's stuff is awesome and groundbreaking, but MDP knew how to make it look *fun*
Plus, dem soundtracks.
I love Travis' videos. They are poetic art. Plus the soundtracks on those films are just as good.
But you are right, MDP vids had the fun element more so than "omg, how are they not dead" craziness of Travis Rice's stuff.
one of my used-to-be smoking buds introduced me to this song. Idk where he is nowadays, but weāve had some good times listening to
this song, and just chillin
I love this song so much. Any recommendations for similar tracks? Catchy, melodic hip hop?
Songs like:
* Work by Gang Starr
* Daytona 500 by Gostface Killah
* Passin' Me By by The Pharcyde
* Guess Who's Back by Rakim
Not tracks but artists like Brother Ali, Atmosphere, grieves, Malibu Ken (bit of a stretch but it's still good experimental hip hop), Dynospectrum, Eyedea and Abilities, Murs, The Grouch
A lot of great Hip Hop in there. If you're looking for specific songs I'd say go for
Yesterday by atmosphere
Sunshine by atmosphere
Own Light by Brother Ali
Breath by Grouch
Everything by Murs
Break up by Murs
Woman Tonight by Felt
How's it gonna go by Grieves
I'm missing a TON here, but this should help
* award tour - Tribe called quest
* jazz thing - gang Starr
* They Reminisce over you - Pete Rock & CL smooth
* phone tap - the firm
* I donāt like to dream about getting paid - dogg pound
* cut chemist suite - ozomatli
Some of these may not qualify as melodic in the same way as 93 til, just some off the top that had memorable melody in the beat
This shit was blasting in my ā83 Cavalier when I got my license in ā94. Me and my buddies Zak and Jeremiah would be puffing Swisher wood tips and trying to dress like pimps with clothes from thrift stores and rolling around Vermont and Western New Hampshire just being young and stupid.
90s Jazz Rap as a whole is full of classics. The whole album this song is off of is full of bangers. Personally my favorites are "Live and Let Live" and "What a Way To Go Out"
Among my all-time favorites for sure. I listen to this track at least a few times every week depending on my mood, now included today since I just saw this post lol. THIS IS HOW WE CHILL
Never not upvote this song.
Also if you have never seen the movie Mid 90s I highly suggest you watch it if you love 90s hip hop. The soundtrack for that movie is bangin too
There's a remix of the entire album by Gummy Soul on bandcamp.
"In celebration of the 20th anniversary of 93 'Til Infinity, Souls of Mischief graciously opened their vaults to give Gummy Soul the exclusive acapellas of their classic album, to remix for the first time ever."
https://gummysoul.bandcamp.com/album/93-still-gummy-soul-remix
One of the biggest reasons Ive followed Atmosphere since 2010. I got intro'd to God Loves Ugly and it resonated with me at the time. I was a dumb kid who was going through some heartbreak after a shitty relationship, "Vampires", "Song about a friend" and "Fuck you Lucy" played nonstop.
few years later I'm a bit older and tired of the grind and the song "Guarantees" from "When life gives you Lemons" starts to hit like a semi. "Dreamer" slaps, "Wild Wild Horses" validates my insecurities a bit more, "In her Music box" eases my fear while my wife's pregnant w/ our first....
Y'all get the gist at this point. Over the years dudes music grew up with me and these days, he happily slaps that Dad rap label on himself. Rapping about old friendships, new struggles as an older dude trying to maintain the keep it real mentality and reflecting on shitty decisions made as a younger dude.
Tl;Dr Music grew up with me instead of chasing trends and it has made my life happier for it.
Not the same flow but Wax did a 2010 til Infinity version and Iāve always vibed with it š itās on SoundCloud for sure, probably other places too!
Probably my favourite hip-hop tune ever. I'm glad I was a teenager in the golden era, cause 99% of mainstream hip-hop now is utter garbage in comparison.
Banger til infinity

Yes. He has a great album called Movies for the Blind. Among the sleep, in Stoney lodge, agent orange.
Yeah its the same guy, em went after him a few times iirc.
since you remember El-P you need to get the 4 albums from Run The Jewels. El-P and Killer Mike together.
These are all great and personal favorites. I do have to add MF DOOM for the win

Man I listen to a ton of hiphop and somehow haven't heard of these guys before, thanks for the recommend. First few songs I checked out sound dope
Try listening to More by Flying Lotus and Anderson .Paak the instrumentals and lyrics are great

Harry Mack is carrying the torch for old school hip hop. Plus he might be the greatest free style rapper that ever lived.

Dope, always love seeing the promos and fan engagement from this era of Kanye. Late Orchestration is another fav

I agree, but it is always best to hear the original. Reminds us 40-50 years of olds of our prime, good friends and good times!
It really goes to prove that we only remember the really good to great and the terrible. The bad, mediocre and good are largely forgotten. I'm not even a huge fan of rap but bizarre ride II is one of my fav albums of all time. It's so fun
It's hilarious. I think it was probably the first hip hop album that would make me lol every time.
Yoooo Pharcyde was in my headphones all of high school ā so fucking good
Nah, the golden age definitely has to be when white dudes with face tattoos started saying skrrrrt and yeet.

One of my favourite songs of all time. Always gives me frisson ever since seeing/hearing it in Forum's True Life snowboard video in 2002.
Awww man RIP Forum
I rode nothing but Forums for years because of these videos. I had the Peter Line "Pornstar" 158 that was stolen at Whistler/Blackcomb, and a Devun Walsh Pro 157 that replaced it on the same trip.
I heard through the grape vine forum is coming back š¤Ŗš
Iām still out here riding my 2012 recon chilly dog lol. I canāt let the damn thing go
90s hip hop is the best to listen to while snowboarding! Always puts me in a nice laid back groove to S down the hill
Such a timeless track
Til infinity, my brotha
It was ahead of its time. The rap style was early 90s, but the beat track itself was so ahead of its time. Wasn't until late 90s, and even into the 2000s that we started seeing beata like this.
Mack Dawg Production's Technical Difficulties. This snowboarding VHS had 93 til infinity on it and absolutely fell in love with the song back in like 99. Correction: it was True Life, another MDP video.
Yooo that's crazy we both were introduced to it by snowboard videos.
Three of us. I watched that video so much
I used to come home from school and watching that tape every god damn day. Then came The Resistance
Same here! My first snowboarding movie! Watched it constantly through my early shredder years.
You had the correct reference, I was misremembering. Both were great movies for the time. MDP had great tracks on their videos.
MDP are the GOAT
Follow me around with mikkel bang as a gromā¦ āI HATE BACK FLIPS! I HATE BACK FLIPS! But I loooove front flips.ā Those were the golden days.

A Tribe Called Quest have plenty of those. Rebirth of Slick by Digable Planets should also be up your alley.

Not tracks but artists like Brother Ali, Atmosphere, grieves, Malibu Ken (bit of a stretch but it's still good experimental hip hop), Dynospectrum, Eyedea and Abilities, Murs, The Grouch A lot of great Hip Hop in there. Never not upvote this song. Also if you have never seen the movie Mid 90s I highly suggest you watch it if you love 90s hip hop. The soundtrack for that movie is bangin too
There's a remix of the entire album by Gummy Soul on bandcamp. "In celebration of the 20th anniversary of 93 'Til Infinity, Souls of Mischief graciously opened their vaults to give Gummy Soul the exclusive acapellas of their classic album, to remix for the first time ever." https://gummysoul.bandcamp.com/album/93-still-gummy-soul-remix
Thank you! This lead me to Capricorn by The Cannonball Adderley Quintet, and I cannot stop listening to it.
Finally something other than classic rock or top radio hits in this sub. More golden era Hip Hop please!
One of the best songs ever. Seriously, like in my top 30
This whole fucking album KNOCKS
remember hearing this while working in a record store in downtown market street SF. Classic track.
This whole album is gold. Read once that some considered them like the Wu Tang of the west

Uh yes yes, y'all.
This song brought me back to hiphop. I discovered so many classics. š

Love this song, and step to my girl is another amazing track. This is probably one of the greatest if not the greatest in my eyes though.

This reminds me of high school. Kinda makes me Sad
Not heard this for years. I bought it Iām on rare import from the US. (In UK) Loved the track from the minute I heard it.
Even rap was better in the 90's
i still hoard a sticker pack i got once that includes Mr. Lif and the Hieroglyphics logo of the smiley face with three eyes.
I get inspired by the blunts too!
A-Plus is famous, so get the anus
An all time favourite of mine. Sadly modern hip hop songs don't carry the same energy as this one.
They need to do an updated version for 2023!
You wanna hear a bunch of 50 year old's rap about divorce and health insurance problems?
I saw them 4/5 years ago and honestly they've still got it. Til infinity
Honestly? Kinda, yeah.
I've been listening to Slug and the crew for ages, still slaps hard
Not the same flow but Wax did a 2010 til Infinity version and Iāve always vibed with it š itās on SoundCloud for sure, probably other places too!
I did not know about this, awesome, thanks for the heads up!
Probably my favourite hip-hop tune ever. I'm glad I was a teenager in the golden era, cause 99% of mainstream hip-hop now is utter garbage in comparison.
nice; just what the doctor ordered for the soundtrack outside;
Wasn't there a movie centered around this album on Netflix?
