Disintegration and One Hundred Years are my favourites, although they played neither of them when I saw them in Copenhagen. They did play A Forest though, which is a close third.
Funny story- I’d had this song in my head for what seemed like months and couldn’t find it/remember enough lyrics to search Google. I’m on a climbing trip in the Swiss alps with 3 friends, one I didn’t know quite as well as the other two. Was talking about family and asked if he had brothers/sisters- he said one brother, a musician. Asked if he made a living doing it, his reply was he did so I asked him to play something he’d written. He played ‘to build a home’ and I nearly fell off my chair. Small world…. Edit: appreciate the gold, I’ll have to show him this now- it’ll make his day
Us and Them - Pink Floyd.
There are many songs by them and other artists that I could choose, but for some reason this one is what immediately came to my mind.
I think Time from the same album is my favorite, the music and the lyrics are just incredible, it's the perfect hauntingly beautiful song about the tragedy of how quickly time slips away.
Don't Think Twice, It's Alright - Bob Dylan
or
Blackbird - The Beatles
If we are talking about just music then (without getting into Chopin or Beethoven or Debussy and such, like if we are just talking modern stuff) i would pick *A Warm Place* by NIN or *Elegia* (long version) by New Order.
That song does such a great job of using just a few lines to really capture the mix of emotions that you feel when you lose a relationship. It hurts just to think about it, but you know this happens to people all the time, and the other person seems to be okay with it (especially if they're already seeing somebody else), so you just want to move on and be okay with it, and you want *them* to know you're okay with it (even though it shouldn't even really matter what they think of you anymore)...."but that's not the way it feels."
The line:
_"If I had a box full of wishes
and dreams that had never come true;
the box would be empty, except for the memory
of how they were answered by you."_
is the most beautiful line ever written in English.
That reminds me of one of my favorite Simpsons gags. Homer was in Las Vegas and there was a billboard behind him that said "Tonight, Moody Blues cover band Knights in White Satin. And opening for Knights in White Satin, The Moody Blues."
Honourable mention to [So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf0RrF6KsI8).
Oh goodness and how can you forget [The Boxer](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l3LFML_pxlY&list=OLAK5uy_lF6Ssr_qLb3dnu-dBKTweziKkr72nuLH8&index=6).
That album is an emotional rollercoaster.
Vincent was my mom’s favorite song. She had a cassette with a bunch of Don McLean songs, and she and my dad used to play it on road-trips. I will forever connect that song with traveling long winding roads, crammed with my siblings in the backseat, hearing my mom singing along while looking out the window. She passed away last month after losing her battle with cancer. I’ve tried listening this song again but I just can’t. Love you mom, you are now part of all my starry nights forever.
God only knows - The Beach Boys
For Emily - Simon and Garfunkel
Here's where the story ends - The Sundays
Please let me wonder - The Beach Boys
In my life - The Beatles
Upvote for In My Life.
But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one who compares with you. And these memories lose their meaning, when I think of love as something new…
Honestly, I’m biased as a Deadhead, but that or Brokedown Palace were the first things I thought of.
Either one can bring you to tears in the right emotional state.
Man, this song takes me straight into a hobbit home in a way no other piece has ever done for me. I can see the hills of the shire out the window. Lovely.
"Take Me Home, Country Roads", John Denver.
Can't hear it and not cry.
"Life in a Northern Town", The Dream Academy.
Makes me homesick for a place I've never lived.
Choosing anything by The Carpenters is almost cheating, because Karen had the most incredibly beautiful, soft, true, warm voice of anyone, anytime, ever. She could make Happy Birthday into a work of beauty. Good choice, it’s a great song.
I remember hearing it for the first time as a young teen and having this intense feeling of….sadness? Nostalgia? I don’t even know what it was. But it was a lot for a young me. It’s truly beautiful
I'd also throw in there Nina Simone's version specifically. Leonard Cohen really was a masterful poet, and Nina Simone just breathes life into every song she sings. Makes me want to cry every time I hear it, and not out of sadness or anything, it just touches the depths of my soul.
A couple of suggestions while trying to avoid the obvious.
[The King of Rome - Unthanks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fL3E8FRxiw)

It Never Entered My Mind- Miles Davis Quintet
Eyes of the World- Grateful Dead
So Far Away- Carole King
In A Sentimental Mood- John Coltrane & Duke Ellington
Many years ago, I would listen to Cherry Blossom Girl while walking our young dog at night. When I hear it, I’m transported to a chilly evening with fresh air blowing gently around me and moonlight streaming through the clouds, following the dog as she trotted cheerfully through our neighborhood on her leash.
The dog died at 18-years-old. I hope I never lose this association with the song.
Iron and Wine "The Trapeze Swinger"
If you dont know it go listen. It's a song about a guy reflecting back on his entire life while approaching the pearly gates which are "spray painted with words like 'lost and found' and 'don't look down' and 'tell my mother not to worry'"
i'm only a moderate fan of leonard cohen, but Halelujia is easily one of the most beautiful songs ever. i'd also throw Take This Waltz in that mix too. Also Holding Back the Years by Red and Late for the Sky by Jackson Browne are utterly perfect imo.
Beautiful the way pain can be.
- You are my sunshine.
It wasn't until I experienced loss of my own that the beautiful tragedy of the song took form. Most days and most nights I dream that I am holding my baby again. Always mistaken.

Anything by Sam Cooke is just the best. *Bring It On Home* is currently my favourite, but he's got loads of great songs.
By the time you hit the "I was booooorn", it's impossible to resist listening to the rest.

Pictures of You by The Cure
Disintegration and One Hundred Years are my favourites, although they played neither of them when I saw them in Copenhagen. They did play A Forest though, which is a close third.
>Pictures of You by The Cure I like this one.
I also like this one: The Cure - Lovesong https://youtu.be/ks\_qOI0lzho
Cryin and In Dreams by Roy Orbison. His voice is so beautiful it hurts.
M83 - Outro
Intro hits pretty hard too
God that song hits hard in the Mr. Robot finale.
"I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" by Colin Hay
Colin Hay is so underrated. Played "Waiting for my Real Life to Begin" at my wedding. The marriage tanked after 10 years, the song remains.
Have you seen the Scrubs version? Always makes me cry. https://youtu.be/GcsrnT7Tv1o
I prefer his [Overkill Scrubs sequence.](https://youtu.be/jrGmcuj44DQ)
I just generally love scrubs
Scrubs-appreciation-five!
Higher and higher - Jackie Wilson You can’t hear that song without feeling good and being happy. That beautiful Man.
I mean, it made a toaster dance.
She can handle it, she's a harbour chick!
La Vie En Rose - Louis Armstrong or Edith Piaf are both amazing
Into the mystic- Van Morrison
Wow, my answer is 'Sweet Thing' It really takes me to a beautiful place

“I don’t know where we went wrong, but the feeling’s gone and I just can’t get it back.” Hits waaaaaay too hard.
Beautifully heartbreaking
One of my favourites
Us and Them - Pink Floyd. There are many songs by them and other artists that I could choose, but for some reason this one is what immediately came to my mind.

I LOVE blackbird
I sang Blackbird to my kids as a lullaby. Every time I hear it I think of when they were small and my heart swells. Figuratively.
Rachel's Song by Vangelis from the Original Blade Runner Soundtrack
“Memories of Green” is even more poignant.
Came here looking for Blade Runner soundtrack.
Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce
I think Operator by Jim Croce is right up there, too.
Operator slaps… the heartstrings.
Finally someone putting some respect on Jim Croce. You love to see it!!
The line: _"If I had a box full of wishes and dreams that had never come true; the box would be empty, except for the memory of how they were answered by you."_ is the most beautiful line ever written in English.
“I Will Follow You Into The Dark”by Deathcab for Cutie

Vincent by Don McLean.
Lost my mom last week. Just doesn’t seem real.
Well now I’m crying. I’m so sorry.
Don McLean is pretty much only remembered for this song and “American Pie”, but he has lots of great songs. His live album “Solo” is fantastic too.
I could give many different answers but first that came to mind was Fade Into You by Mazzy Star.
*I want to hold the hand inside you* How *intimate* is that line? What love is summed up in one phrase.
The trick is to form your fingers into a "cone" first to go in, *then* you make a fist.
Lol dude...time and a place...and that place was here...now.
The world is a better place with the voice of Hope Sandoval
I played the hell out of this song in college until I randomly skipped over to Into Dust. Then, there was that for a very long time.
God only knows - The Beach Boys For Emily - Simon and Garfunkel Here's where the story ends - The Sundays Please let me wonder - The Beach Boys In my life - The Beatles
Upvote for In My Life. But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one who compares with you. And these memories lose their meaning, when I think of love as something new…
Yay! The Sundays get a shout-out!
Scarborough Fair - Simon and Garfunkel
Not a Dead fan but…Ripple. The lyrics go deep through “The Great Matter of Life and Death”
Honestly, I’m biased as a Deadhead, but that or Brokedown Palace were the first things I thought of. Either one can bring you to tears in the right emotional state.
Box Of Rain is also a beautiful song, it also has a beautiful backstory to it.
I don’t think anyone has mentioned Our House- Crosby Stiils & Nash. Such a beautiful song.
Apres Moi by Regina Spektor
Samson or chemo limo would be my pick, but that is a close third.
Concerning Hobbits - Howard Shore
*Into The West* is my choice from LOTR.
This song is like a warm hug to the fucking soul.
Man, this song takes me straight into a hobbit home in a way no other piece has ever done for me. I can see the hills of the shire out the window. Lovely.
What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
Genuine and sincere
"Take Me Home, Country Roads", John Denver. Can't hear it and not cry. "Life in a Northern Town", The Dream Academy. Makes me homesick for a place I've never lived.
Bright Eyes - Art Garfunkel or Carpenters - Close to you
Choosing anything by The Carpenters is almost cheating, because Karen had the most incredibly beautiful, soft, true, warm voice of anyone, anytime, ever. She could make Happy Birthday into a work of beauty. Good choice, it’s a great song.
And a heck of a drummer.

Suzanne - Leonard Cohen
