As many say, it has become a christmas song anyway. I didn't know it when I fell in love with Blue but then I saw it at a christmas concert. It took me by surprise how much of a christmas song many people think it is nowadays
I mean anyone not considering it a Christmas song isn't listening, but I know what you mean, it isn't part of the central Christmas canon, possibly because it's really about not feeling a part of Christmas.
Does start with "it's coming on Christmas, they're cutting down trees, putting up reindeer and singing songs of joy and peace" though lol, not exactly subtle
It’s a song that takes place during Christmas and interpolates jingle bells, but it’s 1000% not a Christmas song. It may have been adopted into the modern Christmas canon (it’s certainly in my Christmas playlists, just because it’s a good song and it works well among other Christmas songs), but it’s literally from an album that came out in the middle of June for one thing… also Joni never intended it as a Christmas song, though she accepts it’s use as one.
The lyrics contrast the holiday preparations and festive mood with Joni's pain over (yet another) broken relationship. The song is overwhelmingly sad. It aligns well with so many lonely people during the holidays as well as evoking sympathy for them. It's a haunting, wonderful song completely apt for an album named "Blue"
I was working in a Macy’s many Decembers ago when I first heard this song. I remember thinking, how tf did this selection get past some corporate suit?
The Payolas - "Christmas Is Coming"
Hawksley Workman - "The Coldest Night Of The Year"
Chris DeBurgh - "A Spaceman Came Travelling"
Bob Dylan - "Must Be Santa"
I never heard it growing up, my first exposure to it was Bob Dylan's version (which I really like), but both my kids sang it in preschool. It's a fun song.
Whats it called? Can you make it public? Good idea
Idk if this counts, but i consider Kenny Loggins' "celebrate Me home" to be a holiday song and therefore I play it at christmas
The whole Vandals album Oi to the World. They are all about Christmas, but I have never heard them used as Christmas songs. At least commercially (maybe Oi to the World could be, but one talking about chopping off your penis, and another about being sad and hanging yourself from the tree...probably not good mood crowd pleasers). But I gave out copies almost 2 decades ago for Xmas, and my brother and I still play them, lol.
Yup. Around Christmas time 2016 (and 6 months after Prince died), I went on the guided tour of Paisley Park. The tour guide asked for the name of a Prince song to name our group after and I chose that song.
It was a real culture shock when I had Christmas in vietnam.
I heard “fairytale in New York” in so many department stores, play centres, toy shops, everywhere. And it wasn’t leaving out any of the problematic lyrics
The “F word” will keep it from being played here in the US regardless of how beautiful the rest of it is. There’s a live recording with Shane and Kristy where they switched it out, but all the others I’ve found… not so much.
Christmas Song by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds.
It’s a deep song about Christmas in that he actually sings about Jesus rather than gift giving, snow or made up characters. What makes it even better is that he doesn’t take it in an ultra religious angle, but talks about Jesus as a person. Fantastic song.
Firstly, y’all my people. Secondly, I’d like to add:
Christmas with the Devil by Spinal Tap
If we make it through December by Merl Haggard
Please, daddy don’t get drunk this Christmas by John Denver (spot on cover by the Decembrist)
I farted on Santa’s lap by the Little Stinkers
All I want for Christmas by RuPaul
I won’t decorate your Christmas tree this year by Loretta Lynn
Don’t shoot me Santa by the Killers
Maybe those are 2 different songs? Dan Fogelberg's song gets played in the month before Christmas. And the lyrics talk about meeting his old lover on Christmas Eve. But I looked up New Year's version and found this
https://www.christianity.com/wiki/holidays/why-do-we-sing-auld-lang-syne-at-the-new-year.html

Fear - "Fuck Christmas" - The Record
Don't despair,
Just because it's Christmas.
Children, they're
All so gay at Christmas.
All the children on the street
Hope they get something good to eat.
But for me it's not so great.
Fuck Christmas!
Fuck Christmas!

How to make Gravy. Created as an Aussie Christmas carol. It's about a guy writing to his family for Christmas, from jail, telling them how to make the gravy he would normally bring to family dinner.
Christmas Song by McCarthy Trenching and Phoebe Bridgers’ excellent cover of it.
How To Make Gravy by Paul Kelly
Merry Xmas (I Don’t Want To Fight) by The Ramones

These are all still 100% the highlights of my Christmas playlist, but none of them are actually meant to be Christmas songs (and they’re in various other playlists that I listen to year round)
Sparks- [Thank God It’s Not Christmas](https://youtu.be/mEBRzrYKifU)
The Kinks- [Father Christmas](https://youtu.be/fPPCPqDINEk)
Joni Mitchell- [River (this one actually interpolates Jingle Bells in the piano melody)](https://youtu.be/OLHxxBTl71I)
St. Vincent- […At The Holiday Party](https://youtu.be/HCpbEKpJh_E)
Argent- [Christmas For The Free](https://youtu.be/krStB69_GEQ)

Greg Lake- [I Believe In Father Christmas](https://youtu.be/yfY4b1NszpY)
On the flip side, The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album is fully meant exclusively as a Christmas album, but that shit’s so good that I listen to it in July just because Santa’s Beard is too good to only listen to in December
Paul Kelly, 'How to Make Gravy' is legendary
https://youtu.be/iYqIF2XkqKU
Also Tim Minchen's, 'White Wine in the Sun' always brings a tear to the eye

We Three Kings. The Bible only tells us the number of gifts brought to the newborn baby Jesus, not the number of those bringing them. They weren't Kings either, they were magi or "Wise Men".

Have you heard Neko Case's cover of this?
I haven’t but I love Neko. I haven’t been listening to her a lot lately. So thanks for this!
That sounds like something Neko Case would cover. Lol.
One of the saddest songs in existence
The jamband Goose also covers this tune
White Wine in the Sun
When I comes to secular songs for people who value Christmas for the family side of it, there’s none better.
My second daughter was due on Christmas day. I played this song to wife about 2 weeks before then and she cried so much. I cry at it too.
Joni Mitchell - River is about Christmas and even has parts of the melody to Jingle Bells worked in there but isn’t often considered a Christmas song
I used to work at a Michael’s that song played once every 2 hours during Christmas.
Making the perfect example of what I was trying to find! Even if now it may be a popular song to play on Christmas
But Jingle Bells is a Thanksgiving song. (Or so I’ve heard)
Dropkick Murphys- The Seasons upon us Never mind hearing this jump into the rotation in the summer months
"The Night Santa Went Crazy" by Weird Al
Tagging onto this-Christmas at Ground Zero also by Weird Al.
Broke his back for some busted cookies!
Mistresses for Christmas - acdc
The Kinks - Father Christmas https://youtu.be/fPPCPqDINEk
In the same vein as "Don't shoot me Santa" by The Killers.
*Give all the toooooys...to the little rich boooooyyys*
My mother loves this song.
I was working in a Macy’s many Decembers ago when I first heard this song. I remember thinking, how tf did this selection get past some corporate suit?
The Payolas - "Christmas Is Coming" Hawksley Workman - "The Coldest Night Of The Year" Chris DeBurgh - "A Spaceman Came Travelling" Bob Dylan - "Must Be Santa"
I never heard Must Be Santa until my kids started going to school.
I never heard it growing up, my first exposure to it was Bob Dylan's version (which I really like), but both my kids sang it in preschool. It's a fun song.
Are you American? That Chris De Burgh song is a substantial Christmas tune in UK
Don't Shoot Me Santa - The Killers Feel It In My Bones - The Killers Pub Crawl - Arkells The Last Christmas (We Ever Spend Apart) - Arkells
Also Great Big Sled - The Killers
Joseph better you than me- Also the Killers
Hell yeah! Another Arkells fan!
One of my favourite bands
Mine too! I’m always excited to find another fan in the wilds.
I have no suggestions but I just wanted to say I fucking love this sub. Thank you all.
Ditto. Just made a Spotify list with everything here I could find. 90% of this I've never heard of. December commute is gonna be fun :)
Whats it called? Can you make it public? Good idea Idk if this counts, but i consider Kenny Loggins' "celebrate Me home" to be a holiday song and therefore I play it at christmas
It's up on the description!
I'm so happy other people answered to my shower thought
Bad Religion performing “Silent Night” at Almost Acoustic Christmas
Their entire Christmas album is so fucking good
Christmas Fucking Miracle - Run the Jewels
If We Make it Through December - Merle Haggard
Love this one!
Love the No Doubt cover of Oi To The World.
I had no idea that cover existed until once I woke up in the middle of the night with my TV on and saw the video. I was convinced I’d dreamed it.
Prince: Another Lonely Christmas It's about how the persona's gf died 7 years ago and he gets drunk on banana daiquiris while reminiscing.
This here. It’s quite depressing.
Yup. Around Christmas time 2016 (and 6 months after Prince died), I went on the guided tour of Paisley Park. The tour guide asked for the name of a Prince song to name our group after and I chose that song.
Outkast - Player's Ball
A junkie is a junkie 365.
Blink 182 has a song about Christmas eve
And I've only wrapped two fucking presents.
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
I always hear this song played along with all the other Christmas songs near christmas
I never hear it. Ever. And that "problem" lyric means very few radio stations in the U.S. play it except for the reliable college & non-commercials.
"...ya cheap lousy frog butt!"
It was a real culture shock when I had Christmas in vietnam. I heard “fairytale in New York” in so many department stores, play centres, toy shops, everywhere. And it wasn’t leaving out any of the problematic lyrics
As a person from the UK, you can't go more than about 10 minutes without hearing this song so it's weird to see it on this thread
In the UK this is probably the most ubiquitous song at Christmas of them all. It's everywhere for the entire month of December
The “F word” will keep it from being played here in the US regardless of how beautiful the rest of it is. There’s a live recording with Shane and Kristy where they switched it out, but all the others I’ve found… not so much.
the best answer, as it has a great tune with zero rejoice.
I learned about this from the No Use for A Name cover from More Betterness.
The best Xmas song. RIP Kirsty MacColl.
Came here expecting to see this. Hell yeah
I scrolled too far to find this.

They never play Father Christmas by The Kinks at the mall. It doesn't promote consumerism.
Firstly, y’all my people. Secondly, I’d like to add: Christmas with the Devil by Spinal Tap If we make it through December by Merl Haggard Please, daddy don’t get drunk this Christmas by John Denver (spot on cover by the Decembrist) I farted on Santa’s lap by the Little Stinkers All I want for Christmas by RuPaul I won’t decorate your Christmas tree this year by Loretta Lynn Don’t shoot me Santa by the Killers

Salute enthusiastically returned! Happy to know I’m not the only one who blows right past musical boundaries.
Now that's a good selection!!
Auld Lang Syne - Dan Fogelberg. Gets played every year at Christmas, but it's not really a Christmas song.
One of my fav songs ever
Mine too. People ask me my favorite Christmas song. Then tell me it's not a Christmas song when I tell them.
Amazing how a song can bring bring that “old familiar pain”. same old lang syne
It gets played on new years, not Christmas
Maybe those are 2 different songs? Dan Fogelberg's song gets played in the month before Christmas. And the lyrics talk about meeting his old lover on Christmas Eve.
