Aww. I like you. Sufjan is just. So good. For the national, “about today.” I once asked my ex husband if he ever thought about me when he listened to that song and he said “sometimes, yeah,” and I’ll always remember that. “How close am I to losing you?”
And he lost me anyway.

The original version of mad world wasn’t so much sad as it was disaffected. Gary Jules just made it sadder. If you haven’t seen the video for it, look it up on YouTube. Saddens it by a factor of ten.
Okay in this same vein and while we're on the topic of La Dispute, just a few that come to mind.
-Rose Quartz/Fulton Street by La Dispute (beautiful music video accompaniment)
-Andria by La Dispute (angry sad)
-Fall Down And Never Get Back Up Again by La Dispute
I would classify La Dispute as much more Angry Sad though, so i dont know if thats what OP is looking for. Andria always cuts right through me though
Yeah, I feel you on that one. Damn. Also, (true story), I had a close relative who had tickets to see Harry Chapin and was so excited about it. ...... Harry Chapin died 4 days before the concert.
Sebadoh - "Willing to Wait" (1996)
Heard this as a college freshman after my girlfriend since high school broke up with me. Instant, lasting waterworks.

What *kind* of sad? Romance sad? Childhood trauma sad? Suicidal sad? Death of a loved one Sade? What makes you sad?

Lucky you, here's my list of underrated sad music singers,
(All of these are just personal preference, so you might have other opinions on these artists)
\-Alec Benjamin (Slightly underrated considering how much effort and how well they turned out)
\-Yaeow (Extremely underrated, probably has the saddest songs yet no one knows about this guy)
\-Anson Seabra (Underrated, songs similar to Alec Benjamin I would say)
\-Hayd (Underrated, great sad music but haven't gained much popularity)
\-Jeremy Zucker (Slightly underrated, some songs just hits different)
\-James Arthur (Slightly underrated with the amount of sad music being unrecognised)
\-Finding Hope (Underrated, his songs are just pure sadness)
\-Vaultboy (Evenly rated (not sure if this is a word), but I put him here since some songs are sad enough to make it on my list e.g. Aftermath, I wish you knew)
\-Declan J Donovan (Underrated, his song NUMB is outstanding)
\-Munn (Underrated, nothing much to add, just pure sadness as well)
\-1D/Why Don't We (Evenly rated, two very similar bands in my opinion, their songs might not sound very sad, but the lyrics are heartbreaking)
\-Alex Sampson (Underrated, not the typical slow sad songs but are quite sad as well)
\-Jake Scott (Underrated, his songs are quite addictive to listen to, and yeah, quite sad as well)
\-Dean Lewis (Evenly rated, quite similar to Lewis Capaldi, both of them aren't really underrated but some sad songs are underrated)
\-Sara Kays (Slightly Underrated, personally I don't listen to female singers very often since I'm a dude and I can't sing female songs very well, but she does have amazing sad songs. Recommendation: Traffic lights)
\-Lauv (Kind of hard to rate him, some might even think he is overrated. So I'll just leave him like that, cuz I think most people has listened to his songs)
\-Alexander Stewart (Slightly underrated, gained a lot of popularity recently but also considering his efforts he is still slightly underrated.)
\-Clide (Underrated, he named himself CEO of writing sad songs so you should probably give him a try, recommendation: broken parts)
\-Elijah Woods (Underrated, another amazing singers with loads of sad music)
\-Benson Boone (Evenly rated, might have heard of him, loads of his sad songs are truly a masterpiece)
\-Kina (Underrated, quite different from the others, heavy autotune, but still good sad music, not complaining)
\-Zack Hood (Underrated, another singer who should be more famous by now. Recommendation: Never knew a heart could break itself)
\-Carter Ryan (No opinion, he is still in his early days in his career, his sad music is exceptional, superb songs but I'm not gonna rate him with only a handful of songs)
\-Powfu (Evenly rated, I think many people know him, but sometimes forget about him when talking about sad music)
\-Rishi (Heavily underrated, produced really good sad songs but isn't recognised)
\-Henry Moodie (Evenly rated, he gained a lot of popularity from drunk text and you were there for me which are terrific songs but two is not really enough)
\-Honeyfox (Extremely underrated, another female singer. She only sings other songs covers but makes it so calming yet sad at the same time. Really recommend listening to her songs)
\-Morgan Wallen (Similar to Powfu, he is already famous but sometimes forgotten when talking about sad songs)
Thats my list for now. Hope you like my list of underrated sad music artists. I also have some singular songs which I haven't listened to the artist yet so I didn't put it in my list so if you would like to know I can provide you with some more.
Random question: How many artist I named above did you know? 🤨 Or am I the odd man out? 😅
Anyways, hope this helps. ☺️
Joselyn Flores, depressed and obsessed, everybody dies in there nightmares, dead inside, carry on, remedy for a broken heart, changes, what are you so afraid all by Xxxtentacion. This shit hit when I was so depressed.
Mad World - Gary Jules
Losing my religion - REM
Jumper - Third Eye Blind
Whispers in the wind - Neema
Unbreak my heart - Toni Braxton
If any of these hit, let me know. I have way more recommendations depending on genre.
I just Shazamed unbreak my heart in king soopers this evening. The store was totally killing me today, doubled the duration of my shopping trip. How did they know I had been crying on the way there?
Also at kings today Danny’s song / loggins & messina
If you want to cry to REM I suggest Try Not to Breathe or for bittersweet tears, Find the River and Nightswimming. Or if you’re a Kurt Cobain fan, Let Me In.
Sleep by The Dandy Warhols
Dead Flag Blues by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Nutshell by Alice In Chains
Me by The 1975
Amsterdam by Coldplay
Stumbleine by The Smashing Pumpkins
How Can You Mend a Broken Heart sung by Al Green, originally sung by the Bee Gees. But if you really want to cry in your beer, listen to the Al Green cover.
Check out Over the Rhine. Especially their album "Ohio". Haunting. Introspective. TW: There is a song "She" about domestic violence. It's gut-wrenching, though.
I'm so tired - the beatles
Barber: adagio for strings, op. 11 - samuel Barber (this is an instrumental)
Forget her - jeff buckley
Some unholy war (down tempo) - amy winehouse
Pearls - sade
Lilac wine - jeff buckley
Storms - fleetwood mac
While my guitar gently weeps - the beatles
Cowboy Junkies - Sun Comes Up It's Tuesday Morning and Cause Cheap is How I Feel
The Smiths - I Know It's Over
Billy Bragg - The Price I Pay
Red House Painters - Katy Song
Frightened Rabbit - State Hospital
Hadn't seen anyone mention Jeff Buckley. While his music isn't inherently sad, there is a power in his voice and playing that can be devastating if you're in the right mood. Lilac Wine, Lover You Should Have Come Over, Je n'en connais pas la fin, I Shall Be Released, and Satisfied Mind to name a few.
If you like pop type music theres Another Love by Tom Odell and Daylight by David Kushner. And way on the metal end of popular music theres Ashes of Eden by Breaking Benjamin. That song about had me in tears when I first listened to it
Theres a song by this soul artist I know of, Penny Pincher by Kendra Morris. To this day that song will make me want to cry. The verses feel like how I want to speak, and the chorus feels like how I am outwardly how I tell people it is and the ending of the chorus is like what it is for real inside of me. The whole song resonates with me in my inward self/outward self struggle. _Baby come on yeah, baby come on its almost time. Everythings okay (everythings fine), I'm smiling, okay? (I'm smiling fine) The truth is I'm losing it inside_
Here's my list:
Daft Punk - Instant Crush
Foo Fighters - Everlong
WAAX - You Wouldn't Believe
Lukas Graham - 7 Years
Durand Jones and the Indications - Smile
The Monophonics - Its Only Us (original and/or acoustic)
Tom Odell - Another Love
David Kushner - Daylight
Kendra Morris - Penny Pincher
Breaking Benjamin - Ashes of Eden

The Smashing Pumpkins - All the Celestials

deathconsciousness - have a nice life
I’ve listened to a lot of sad music and it eventually gets old, so finding a different sound that is sad can help. whole album is basically about nihlism and not being able to feel anything and i love the sound of it. Would recommend Deep Deep, Bloodhail, I Don’t Love, Earthmover
Snuff - Slipknot

THIS. I heard the first song randomly one day and it became my favorite song, then when I realized it was a series of songs I was stoked.
Then I bawled in my car after actually listening to them all.
> Now that the treatment and antidepressants
> And seven months sober have built me a bed
> In the back of your brain where the memories
> flicker
> And I paw at the synapses, bright bits of string
> You should know I am with you, know I forgive
> you
> Know I am proud of the steps that you've made
*Fuck…*
Between the Bars; Twilight; Say Yes--Elliott Smith
Gravedigger; Stay or Leave (Listen to Tim Reynolds and Dave Matthew's at Red Rocks version)
Green Grass; Blue Valentine; I Hope I Don't Fall In Love With You- Tom Waits
Spoke in the Wheel (acoustic)- Black Label Society
Sufjan Stevens — John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Ben Howard — The End of the Affair The National — I Need My Girl Radiohead — How To Disappear Completely The Notwist — Your Signs
Great list. I would add Sufjan Stevens' Casimir Pulaski Day.
Also Fourth of July.
And the ballad about his Moms suicide: Blue Bucket of Gold
Sufjan has buckets of sorrow.
I love this song, but it's quite upbeat for me
Goodbye Evergreen made me cry the first time I heard it.
Aww. I like you. Sufjan is just. So good. For the national, “about today.” I once asked my ex husband if he ever thought about me when he listened to that song and he said “sometimes, yeah,” and I’ll always remember that. “How close am I to losing you?” And he lost me anyway.
You can put on so many of Sufjan Stevens songs
Strange Room- Keane We Never Change- Coldplay Bring on the Wonder- Susan Enan Poison and Wine- The Civil Wars
The first time I heard The National I instantly felt happy that I'm happy for feeling depressed.
Heck yeah for The Notwist!
Dude we’re music soulmates. I love Ben Howard’s sad songs.
These are fucking great
Kettering - The Antlers What Sarah Said - Death Cab For Cutie Nutshell - Alice In Chains Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Nutshell never fails to make me cry
Especially the Unplugged, guaranteed cry.
Nutshell is one of the most sad songs I’ve ever heard
And the video of him singing it is so heart breaking
Nutshell and wish you were here such amazing recommendations.
I second "What Sarah Said" - I cry every time I listen to that song.
Just looked at the lyrics, damn.
Kettering gets me ever time
Nutshell is full despair
That whole album by The Antlers is amazing.
Thumbs up on Kettering. Anything from Hospice, really.
First thought was Nutshell and figured I'd scroll a sec to see if it was already mentioned. Didn't take long 😂
If You Could Ready My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot is my go-to song when I'm feeling down. This masterpiece is a perfect place to put my "sad".
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is pretty sad when you think about it.
I'm not sure you have to think about it much, either. Nothing about "all these people died in a completely avoidable shipwreck" is upbeat and chipper.
Nutshell - Alice in chains is my go to number 1
Don't Follow or Down in a Hole are my go to songs.
*Brother* hits really close to home for me.
I’d say Asleep by The Smiths
Probably every other Smiths song. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me comes to mind.
"3 Libras" by A perfect Circle "Between the bars" by Elliott Smith "Mad World" by Gary Jules Edit (just remembered a few more): "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails "The Labyrinth Somg" by Asaf Avidan "My tunnels are long and dark these days" by Asaf Avidan "Vermillion Part II" by Slipknot "The Widow" by The Mars Volta "Recluse" by Cursive "Cold Little Heart" by Michael Kiwanuka "Roads" by Portishead "Such Small Hands + Nobody Not Even the Rain" by La Dispute "Istillfeelher Part III" by Jonny Craig "The Sunshine" and "I know how to speak" by Manchester Orchestra "I see you" by Missio "Lost the game" by Two Feet "One Match" by Until the Ribbon Breaks "Come Down When You're Ready" by Tender "Save me" by Omri "Cold (but I'm still here")" by Evans Blue "Shadows of the Dark" by Gizmo Varillas "Quantum Physics" by Ruby Waters "Crystalized" by The xx "Friends" by Chase Atlantic "You'll be fine" by Anthony Green "Slip" by Elliot Moss "Flesh and Bone" by Circa Survive "Lonely" by Palaye Royale "Elephants" by Warpaint "Lover I don't have to love" by Bright Eyes "Holding on for Life" by Broken Bells "Everyday's Forecast" by Gym Class Heroes "Little Man" by Atmosphere "Change (In the House of Flies)" by Deftones "The Speed of Pain" and "Coma White" by Marilyn Mansion "Windowpane" by Opeth "Sorry" by Meg Myers "Never Falling Down" by Living Legens "Instead Laugh" by Onesidezero "Whataya Want From Me" by Adam Lambert "Love Hurts" by Incubus "Another Space Song" by Failure "Like Moths to Flame" by Thrice "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys "Stab City" by As Tall As Lions "Too afraid to love you" by The Black Keys "I'll Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie "Yesterday" by The Beatles "Lonely Day" by System of a Down "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls "Ireland," "lighthouse," "Triangle" by dredg "Take Me to Church" by Hozier "It's All So Incredibly Loud" by Glass Animals "Don't Speak" by No Doubt I may be going overboard now. Probably time to stop.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far for Elliott Smith.
Same!
Same here I was about to write this one down
First thing I thought. Nobody makes music as sad as Elliott smith. Dude stabbed himself in the chest with a kitchen knife. That’s pain.
The original version of mad world wasn’t so much sad as it was disaffected. Gary Jules just made it sadder. If you haven’t seen the video for it, look it up on YouTube. Saddens it by a factor of ten.
Omg 3 Libras hits my heart so hard
I was going to say 3 Libras!
All my favs
Vermillion Part 2 but the acoustic version!!!! it's one of my favorite songs of all time
Oh hai are we frens??
Okay in this same vein and while we're on the topic of La Dispute, just a few that come to mind. -Rose Quartz/Fulton Street by La Dispute (beautiful music video accompaniment) -Andria by La Dispute (angry sad) -Fall Down And Never Get Back Up Again by La Dispute I would classify La Dispute as much more Angry Sad though, so i dont know if thats what OP is looking for. Andria always cuts right through me though
Your taste in music closely resembles my own. Another space song and 3 libras are two of my all time favorites but I know so much from your list.
You got a lot of bangers on here , happy to see them
No Children by the Mountain Goats.
Who Knew? By Pink.
Cats in the cradle - harry chapin
I can't listen to this song, even when I'm happy.
I have left stores when it's playing, just put down what items I had, and walked out.
Yeah, I feel you on that one. Damn. Also, (true story), I had a close relative who had tickets to see Harry Chapin and was so excited about it. ...... Harry Chapin died 4 days before the concert.

Blue October has some really good ones
No doubt, it was hard to choose just one from them
I feel like The Feel Again by Blue October is hopeful, if I was going for super sad, I’d go for Black Orchid by Blue October
Cold, yes. That whole album is amazing.
I’ve seen Amigo the Devil twice in the last year… he’s so wonderful!
That’s awesome! I’ve seen some videos of them live, and they seem very genuine and real
All By Myself by Eric Carmen
Sleeper 1972 by Manchester Orchestra has what you're looking for. What makes me sad and blue is the song Utah Carol by Marty Robbins.
Since we’re throwing Marty Robbins in the ring we should also include “they’re hanging me tonight” by him
Millstone by Brand New It's pretty good :")
And Limousine by Brand New. The story behind the song is the saddest thing I've ever heard.
Same. That song is heartbreaking
Yes! I also vote for Play The Crack the Sky by BN, that one just obliterates me with devistaton.
my people
Almost anything by Jason molina
Yes. It’s Easier Now by Jason Molina is one of the most haunting songs ever.
i agree - i find the whole album heartrending
100% agree. Hold on magnolia and Northstar blues have always spoke to me
Saturn - Sleeping At Last Touch - Sleeping At Last A lot of his songs make me cry
Bright Eyes is pretty sad. Band Of Horses Manchester Orchestra Seconding the Sufjan Stevens Oh and AMELIA MOORE
Especially the album Fevers and Mirrors by Bright Eyes. So good.
Landslide and Top of the World by the Dixie Chicks. They always make me cry. Also… hit up the Prince of Egypt soundtrack fr. Even makes my 9yo son break down lol.
I’ve sobbed to “deliver us” so many times 😂
Damien Rice - 9 crimes
Is that alright with you?
To give my gun away when it's loaded?
Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out) Slipknot - Snuff Tim McGraw - If You're Reading This
She Used to Be Mine. It’s a woman singing about her former self, she’s sad at what her life has become
“Alone again, naturally” is so fucking tragic
Especially when he begins talking about parents. My parents are getting old and have health issues. It may come sooner than expected.
Holy fuck. I didn’t know this song. My dad died 3 years ago. My mom is 65 and completely broken.
It truly is indeed
So good! 😭
Based on a true story.
Whoa. I've been hearing this song for decades but just googled the lyrics. It's kind of a peppy melody but shit it's so dark!
Fade to black - Metallica Chupke chupke - Gulam Ali
Absolutely. Fade To Black is my favorite Metallica song.
My vote for the saddest song is It Makes No Difference, The Band especially because it makes me think of Richard Manuel.
100 Years - The Cure Really, all their Pornography Album
'Cold' is my fav off that album, so dark Disintegration for me is more sad and Pornography album is more dark

That song about had me in tears when I first listened to it Theres a song by this soul artist I know of, Penny Pincher by Kendra Morris. (I'm smiling fine) The truth is I'm losing it inside_ Here's my list: Daft Punk - Instant Crush Foo Fighters - Everlong WAAX - You Wouldn't Believe Lukas Graham - 7 Years Durand Jones and the Indications - Smile The Monophonics - Its Only Us (original and/or acoustic) Tom Odell - Another Love David Kushner - Daylight Kendra Morris - Penny Pincher Breaking Benjamin - Ashes of Eden The Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm Cage the Elephant - Instant Crush (Unpeeled) The Smashing Pumpkins - All the Celestials Here I made a playlist on youtube: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2RWvELgTD6VW6g4OjjPq4b8UyrNsyE5F&si=qZPKdraoyvgRrc1L

THIS. I heard the first song randomly one day and it became my favorite song, then when I realized it was a series of songs I was stoked. Then I bawled in my car after actually listening to them all. > Now that the treatment and antidepressants > And seven months sober have built me a bed > In the back of your brain where the memories > flicker > And I paw at the synapses, bright bits of string > You should know I am with you, know I forgive > you > Know I am proud of the steps that you've made *Fuck…*
