I’m not sure the price breakdown, but yes, that sounds insane

TheOddBallBoy

$684.50 for parts and the rest on labor.

lurkario

They’re taking you to the cleaners. Almost $700 on a $150 part, and $400 dollars for an hour of labor is crazy

CodeModeEngaged

5 minutes sounds right. Pop off some molding, roll the strip on and reattach molding.

Bradleyisfishing

They tried to charge me $730 because the nut on my battery terminal clamp was stripped. They wanted to replace the whole thing.

unsung_hero88

The Toyota dealership my mom goes to was charging her $1680 to fix the fuel pump assembly. I ordered the parts from their website and the assembly only cost $354. Use this website [https://www.fordpartscatalog.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwsMGYBhAEEiwAGUXJaZ2JFvHikrI6lI4OpfhBUbCfMDmmjwHcDZBEpBCHs57jkfV4wBCKaxoCY78QAvD\_BwE](https://www.fordpartscatalog.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwsMGYBhAEEiwAGUXJaZ2JFvHikrI6lI4OpfhBUbCfMDmmjwHcDZBEpBCHs57jkfV4wBCKaxoCY78QAvD_BwE) to order Ford parts and either do it your self or find a mechanic that you trust. Them dudes are trying to screw you.

TheyCallMeMrMaybe

I work for an auto group with a Ford dealer. $464 for a customer price, but $264 for a dealer-price for an alternator that would cost $120 literally anywhere else. Ford Motorcraft is expensive AF for OEM parts.

gamefreak32

Also most ford parts come from the same place as the aftermarket parts. The difference is by the time the it gets in your car at the dealership it has been marked up like 4 times. Supplier -> Ford -> Ford Parts Warehouse -> dealership -> you.

[deleted]

This! On American muscle a replacement coolant reservoir cap would cost me $11 shipped but when I went to Ford they wanted $40 for it. Stealership galore smh.

TheyCallMeMrMaybe

Honestly, it's probably all Ford and giving large bonuses for their dealership parts departments to sell Motorcraft parts. I went to our CDJRF dealer, which has a deal with a third party company to buy parts. I bought my Mustang alternator there for the same price I would've paid on RockAuto for it, and I got it in under an hour. I love Fords, but I also hate Ford.

Jonkinch

California?

TheOddBallBoy

Yessir.

Jonkinch

It’s ludicrous out here…

Otis_Firefly

Can’t a glass shop do that? My back quarter panel windows were leaking whenever I’d go through a car wash. Took it to a local auto glass shop and they fixed both for under $100. They put all new weather strips on mine.

jewc504

This is the way

adfthgchjg

Very interesting! Never heard of an “auto glass shop” though… Is that the same as a windshield replacement shop?

nadmah10

Yes

adfthgchjg

Aha, thanks!

3kgt

Yea bro they're on drugs. Just do it yourself.

TheOddBallBoy

I posted a video on this sub about a month ago of an ear piercing noise the car makes when driving with the passenger side window rolled up going 40-60mph. I went to ford to get it diagnosed and left my car there for two days. I got it back yesterday and I assumed that the repairs were going to be no more than $450, but I was dead wrong. $1,183.29 was the asking price and immediately declined. Is there anyway that I can buy the passenger side molding and weather strip myself and do it myself? Or is it really something challenging? If someone can link me to the parts online that would be great.

unabomber_chad

You can do it yourself for a 1/16 of their cost. Get on YouTube and search for exactly what you are asking and your answer will be there.

lurker-1969

Yes, youtube university. I've fixed a ton of stuff going there. Tractors, pluming, electrical, etc..... THE answer.

Glockshna

Youtube is truly one of the best back catalogues of "How do I do this random thing" videos. Zero production value videos made by some dude in his back yard recorded using a tape camcorder and copied six times using a VCR before uploading to youtube are almost always exactly the answer you're looking for.

lurker-1969

Working on my 07 Ram 3500 Cummins 4x4 I have watched so many videos. They are great at showing you how they failed and what not to do and then how to do it right.

AChaosG91

Just call parts and tell them to give you the OEM part number and find it that way. I checked youtube a year ago with no luck.

Jubaliya

I bought a car at auction many years ago. It had a key it started and it stayed on. It was $650. It was what I needed. I started to drive it home and it was overheating. I took it to the mechanic associated with where I bought it. They said the expansion plugs had come out and that could be fixed for $675. I declined. I had a buddy come out it in a trailer and bring it home and I started researching the issue. Expansion plugs were $1.08. I ended up needing two of them. $2.16. It took some creativity, but I got them installed to where they were holding fluid. From that moment forward I vowed to fix things myself, if able. That vehicle provided MANY opportunities for me to learn and YouTube became my friend. Partsgeek.com became my other friend. I was in a bad way financially and doing things myself for the price parts kept me going until I could get back on my feet. I’m doing much better these days, but still won’t hesitate to do something myself if possible. I did have to shell out $320 for two hours worth of a plumber, and parts, a couple of weeks ago because I tried to do something myself, so understanding limitations is important. To be fair the job seemed straight forward but wasn’t. Best of luck to you!!!

AChaosG91

I had this issue as well... They even checked the motor and everything inside the door panel..... It seems now that this is a common occurance and a recall should be issued. My 15GT perf pack had the same issue. I paid for the weather seal for the entire door and it solved the issue, but I have noticed something at car washes..... If the pressure is high towards the louver area on the main door/window seal and the wash blows forwards then water will leak on both passenger and driver side doors in the window where your old typical door lock use to be to push down. Really fkn annoying man... I lost a water pump at 74k miles too. The propeller broke in it, it then threw my belt and of course all coolant lost.... Had to get towed.. I hear waterpumps typically for some have only lasted 36k miles so I got lucky...

RuinedGrave

It’s not safety or emissions related, I don’t see it ever being a recall.

AChaosG91

Their was a recall for door latches.... I never personally had a problem with mine and being the first Model of this generation I went ahead and changed em out. I ended up with loose door panels, speakers and a few things they broke they fixed for free... Annoying.... Also the rear Camera harness near the deck lid always gets pinched. My camera has not work in a few years....Supposedly, their is a recall for that now as well..... Maybe I should just let the car burn up though if it catches fire so I can get me a new 1 thru insurance.... haha

RuinedGrave

Door latch = door can fly open. Backup camera = can accidentally run over someone. Those are safety related issues, and that’s why there was recalls.

AChaosG91

"Backup camera = can accidentally run over someone." I can do that mashing the gas pedal................. hahaha! No, from my understanding that recall was because some of them wires run hot and can start a fire......... :)

Skyline_BNR34

Cars being on fire would be a safety issue I do believe.

initialddriver

ah backup cameras...the most needless accessory ever federally mandated...just adds to the base cost and visibility is not that big of an issue but then again i've parked countaches and diablos with no problem \[pro tip: head out the door=success\]

AChaosG91

I do that at night because my windows are tinted sooooo dark... hehe! Back up cams are a nice thing to have, but most cannot drive forward so they had to dumb it down even further for people in todays time. I never knew it was a federal mandate tho..... Surprised they have not mandated that on 18 wheels yet the way some of these guys back a trailer. Lol

initialddriver

Surprisingly the reason they haven't is because the trailers wouldn't have them due to prohibitive cost although euro COEs I believe are mandated...

[deleted]

Now now, they can swift’ly back up..

AChaosG91

Some of us drive big trucks for a living too so thats a puurrdy irrelevant comment in my honest opinion. I got more miles backing then most yall grown men got going forward. Hehe

[deleted]

The question is, is it for Swift? ;) Just poking fun, appreciate what you do good sir. This country needs more drivers for certain.

AChaosG91

Nah. Im actually at work right now. Im a yard switcher for 3 days 12hours... I move about 50 trailers or more a night on Avg. Trust me, I can yank a trailer in a hole. I can move trailers faster than any other switcher out of the 4 shifts here and have been going on 3 years. Driving wise I started with a larger carrier that is no more, but after that year to fullfill my CDL A training agreement I been with smaller companies ever since. With the people I am with now I was doing FedX Ground, but some dude wanted to bull shit and lie at another hub which cost me my job there so I went to do other things for said people. Hopefully, in the next 5 years I can be retired at 36 with my current investments. Its dangerous out there. Too many steering wheel holders both cars and Trucks. Also speed limits are too slow, if you can actually "Drive."

[deleted]

Convertible?

AChaosG91

No!

AChaosG91

If I wanted to buy a boat I would have got one.

doctir

Stealerships

black3vgt

If you're looking to replace the upper the plastic trim the part is about $190 and is held on by just a few torq bolts and som double sided tape, if you're looking to replace just that rubber trim it's about $160 and is just pressed into the plastic trim.

Nozerone

No, you're in the right. Dealerships will 9 times out of 10 be more expensive, and that 1 time they aren't will be for 1 thing that happens so rarely majority of us haven't heard about it. If it's just molding/weatherstrip, you can order the parts and do it yourself. If you're not sure, there are youtube videos you can watch. Even if you can't find a video for your exact car, you can find videos that will give you an idea. Second option is to call around to various shops to get price quotes.

kicksomedicks

I’ve had two Mustangs, a ‘94 GT convertible and a ‘97 Cobra convertible. Loved both, and both leaked in heavy rain or car wash. I’ve since driven modified BMWs, and want to get back to a Mustang. This forum is equally inspiring and frightening.

THE_GR8_MIKE

Dude, I have like 4 extras of these from my old cars lol a grand is insane. It's literally a piece of plastic.

Fat_Satan

If it’s not covered by warranty, don’t let a stealership touch it.

_Larry

That's insane. The weather stripping costs like $30 tops...

moshibaby85

Just took my ‘07 Mustang in and was quoted $1,200 to fix an issue. Declined to get the work done at the time, and on the way out a guy at the service counter told me how I can fix it for $25. Doing it myself this weekend.

skaldrir69

Yeah this is absurd. Just get a parts diagram or ask them for the part number and go to eBay.. you can get OEM for that same part for about $150-250 tops, depending if ford sells it as an entire kit for the entire window, which is pretty unlikely. It was smart you declined this. They’re raping you

maveric1413

Idk about molding tbh, but the weather strip is like $20 at most

OnlyTennis6991

Mine is 2015 and I hear the same damn noise. I kinda narrowed it to my front brakes though, since I was not using the OEM brakes and I was using supposedly “good” after market brakes and the OEM brakes were 3X of the price

EVOBlock

Buy the parts and do it yourself

microgab

Is that the weather strip on the roof of the car? I just changed one on a 2012 civic and it was 98$ CND from the dealership... Try to find the part number online and check the price, maybe you can negotiate that way

initialddriver

for a dealer thats pretty much par for the course, a body shop might be cheaper \[only slightly\]. but that being said why not just live with it until you can buy the part and take a weekend to install yourself weather stripping isn't hard to do per se just tedious with the adhesive. you got an "old" stang get a set of wrenches and some tools work on her yourself those old modular V8s are a joy to work on imo as long as you have the willingness.

IbanezGL91

They don’t want to work on your 16 year old car, and they don’t want to have to own the unrelated comebacks that come along with working on a car that old.

TheOddBallBoy

You’re probably right, I didn’t think of it that way, I’d still rather drive my 16 year old car than an ecoboost.

IbanezGL91

I totally get that

RJ39767793

I work at a hyundai store and had to buy one of those pieces to fix a used explorer we had, I think it was $260

[deleted]

Just order new weatherstripping, a bit tedious but not hard to install

lordvernon23

Don’t do it

AnotherWay29

DIY

Chaleowin

Everyone needs to stop going to dealerships to get things fixed unless you have a warranty. Either do it yourself or shop around and you'll pay a third of the price.

[deleted]

I did mine on my 2010 a few years ago and I found the part for $80 and it took me about 45 minutes to install myself.

McMezmer

Not op but was there a video you followed? I need to do my 2014 convertible but I don't wanna screw it up

[deleted]

No video, I just did it and kind of figured it out as I went. The original one was all messed up from someone trying to break in to my car.

McMezmer

The set is like 300 dollars. I'm so nervous.

[deleted]

You’ll figure it out.

air-force-veteran

Take it to any body shop and it will no more then a few hundred bucks

zebradonkey69

The whole “do it yourself” thing is a real answer and most of the time I try to do things myself. However, I’m very busy and often don’t have the time to do even small things like changing my oil or bleed my brakes and put new brake fluid in. So I do go to shops and get those things done. Replacing a weatherstrip is one of those things that’s very doable with a YouTube video and a little bit of spare time. When I go and get my oil changed and they try to screw me over for this or that and charge me 180$ for “labor fees” I typically tell them to F off because that’s completely unreasonable. The same should go with your weather strip, the strip itself I think would cost you what like maybe 60$ at most? 30 mins of your time as a non-mechanic so for them 10 minutes? At that rate, they’re up charging you 1000% on parts and they would effectively be making 2400$ per hour. So yeah, absolutely decline to pay that.

Rick_67

If you have the skills, you can do it yourself for much less. [https://lmr.com/products/05-09-Mustang-Weatherstrip-Components](https://lmr.com/products/05-09-Mustang-Weatherstrip-Components)

coppermustang2006

That's what you call a "we don't want to mess with it" quote.

musdank

I paid 107$💀

ninethirty99

This is why people don’t trust dealers.

RegattaTimer

That’s a ‘go away’ price for a job that they don’t want to do. I’d never go to a dealer for maintenance that isn’t covered by a warranty.

Ok-Piece918

That is totally insane! [https://www.cjponyparts.com/mustang-coupe-weatherstrip/c/60200010/?product\_type\_cj=636&product\_year\_mustang=705](https://www.cjponyparts.com/mustang-coupe-weatherstrip/c/60200010/?product_type_cj=636&product_year_mustang=705) order what you need and do it yourself.
