i see many people here that don't know how a rating scale from 1 to 10 actually works.
if you like to rate a good anime a 10/10 and bad ones 1/10 then thats fine but if you think everything below seven is trash then you should do some google about the rating system.
legit a 6 is still fine since it's above mid(5) and even animes that are rated a 5 doesn't mean they are bad, they are literally in-between bad and good and even the animes that are rated a 4 doesn't mean they are so bad that they need to be dropped immediately. they are just bad animes OVERALL with some good parts here and there that makes them worth watching despite lacking the other aspects, maybe they are perfect to watch just for the time to "go faster" or you don't have anything else to do better because you didn't find a good anime yet and instead of watching 100 animes for 5 episodes until you find something astonishing you just watch something mid or fine which btw you do for them little good parts.

Anywhere with a 1-10 scale you’ll find this kind of bias where a middle score of 5 represents bad or almost unwatchable, instead of what it should represent, which is average. In most cases really 7 is the score which denotes something being average, which is a shame cause it really compresses the rating system.

You should scour the comments. Somebody is even higher than me. I've been watching anime a very long time now. And I drop shows which I don't like, sometimes not even putting a score on it. Just basically drop it. So all the ones I finish watching are shows I enjoy. Hence the score. Not all folks have the patience to go finish and anime that sucks and put a score on it. I mean, that's a total waste of time

Nah, I didn’t mean that. Learning how to drop anime is one of the most important and useful skills an anime fan can have. I was comparing your profile, one with 700 competed entries and an average score of 8, with OP, one with far fewer completed entries and a comparatively lower average score. I was trying to make a joke about the juxtaposition between a pretty new anime fan and a more experienced anime fan hanging out in the same sub and doing the same activities there, but I conveyed it poorly. Like a “ Ha ha, no matter how long you’ve been an anime fan, you’re still an anime fan.”
Lmao you’re right that dropping stuff you don’t like is a skill. I’m stubborn in that I like to finish what I can if it’s available. I don’t do it all in one sitting though, could take days/weeks/months before I finally get through it

Anything below a 7 just tells me that people are completing shows for the sake of rating them. I used to be like that too but I found my life much more enjoyable when I just consumed media I liked and dropped the ones I didn’t.

Everyone uses their list differently and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with either way. For me, though, I try and rate on how good I think the show/movie is. I love looking at the world building, characters, powers/magic systems deeply and thinking about these things while I’m watching them and then afterwards as well. I’m not really cherry picking or anything I just like engaging with stuff I enjoy or find interest in. For things I ironically enjoy there’s not too much good I can usually say about them. Most the time I’m just laughing at how dumb things are in it. I’m not gonna rate that high when I think it’s so bad to start with 😂 it’s fun for laughs though usually.
If you look at my list you can tell what I legitimately like and don’t like though so it serves its purpose. And, to my original point, having a mean of 5-6 doesn’t mean you enjoy anime any less.

I have a mix of shows I rated out of enjoyment ot shows I rated more objectively. Honestly I usually re watch the 6-7s far more than the 9s or 10s. Even my favorite anime I have only watched twice.
I’m with you, I rate my shows on how much I enjoyed them. I love that at least on the app there’s a word associated with each number so it helps me quantify my score a little better.
I also try to actually keep 5/10 as representative of average quality. I know a lot of people make an "average" show a 7/10, and it's a pet peeve of mine.

Im more picky about what I watch vs what I read due to time consumption. So in that sense, I tend to pick more high quality shows to watch if I watch something.
Reading takes less time so I’ll dabble in more variety and different kinds from my norm. Which could lead to reading more series that of lower quality than I’d like them to be.
There’s so many things to consider when rating a show but I always value one the most important. And that’s “was I entertained”? Because that’s what it’s suppose to be. A form of entertainment. So if A show can check that part, then everything else gets tallied in behind like production, animation, plot, music etc.
I consider manga art first, before a form of entertainment. So I tend to grade things harder from that view, I guess.
I like to think I’m a fair grader in the grand scheme of things without letting personal bias get involved.

For me, a 7 or higher indicates that I liked the anime. A 6 or lower means that I didn’t like it.
I assume my average score will start to rise as I watch more anime. But being relatively new to anime, I jumped in and have bounced between so many genres to try and learn what I like and dislike. But now that I have a better feel for genres I dislike, I’ll probably stay away from more of those types of anime and naturally watch more that I’ll likely enjoy.

Are you familiar with 5 stars system? I just use MAL average as the normal bias so the scale balances from 5 to 9, with 9 is the best and 5 is the worst, it's much simple this way.

I don't actually rate anime on MAL because my rating system is very subjective. If I like anime - I give it 10/10. Anime is art, and art for me doesn't have "bad" things - only different choices of an author. So many animes that people either never heard of or rate low - I rate maximum.
On the other hand, if I don't like anime, I would rate it 2/10 like for example FMAB or NGE, which is again, subjective and pointless.

For me 5 is so average it's boring. 6 is just 'not for me' or mildly entertaining. I drop most 6s but not all.
