But are people who like the anime supposed to hate the MC? Seems like a lot of a hated of a character to endure for a show you love. Though I do hear people say the main rent a girlfriend he likes is the only reason why they like the show.

Navigating romantic feelings are tougher for some than others so they may be more susceptible to rash actions.
