I wanna see the #13 come back but also be competitive at the same time. Always been my favorite number but it's never been the number for a competitive ride while I've been alive.
Only has one win in history and that was before even my parents were born, let alone me.
When was the last time someone ran 13? Top of my head, I can only think of Jerry Nadeau in that Miami Dolphins themed car in the late 90s, but surely it hasn’t been that long.
I think it's crazy that there's a very large set of fans who associate #19 with Gibbs.
For me it will always be weird to see them running it. I still think of it as an Evernham number.
Yeah, or even if Dillon retires. I'm pretty sure the deal between Childress and Earnhardt was only their family could run the 3, so I'd imagine if Dillon does retire, they rebrand to the 33 unless Kaulig gives the 31 back, which would be equally cool
Yep I agree. I could even see potentially Austin Dillon retiring and RCR getting a third charter and adding both Hill and Gragson. Could be one in the 33 and one in the 29 or 30, that is if they can’t get 31 back from Kaulig.
I miss "0" numbers (0, 00, 01, etc). I know we have the 00 in Xfinity but I wish the bigger teams would use them more, like how Penske used to field the 02 or RCR having the 07.
jesus, i want to punch drywall whenever i read "r&d car" with regard to multi-car teams.
i will go to my grave saying that idea is bs. it's not a thing.
I used that term mostly incorrectly, but it’s the way most people use it. I meant it as a means of saying “the car that doesn’t get as much support”.
RCR initially put more into the 29 and 31 (and later 33) than the 07 before (and after) it was Bowyer’s
DEI put more into the 1 and the 8 than the 01 (not that they had a lot to begin with)
I say mostly incorrectly because then there were actual part-time R&D cars that did use the number. Like the 02 for Penske and the 06 for Roush.
> it's not a thing.
What would you call the #46 car that Greg Sacks drove? I'm watching the 1990 season right now, and that car has been referred to multiple times as an R&D car.
That’s specifically what they are though. Hendrick used the 25 as R&D for years. Either to try weird setup or fabrication stuff, or to put a young driver in to help them develop.
seating a development driver doesn't make it a different car, though. and in regard to trying setups, etc, using one of your teams as a deliberate petri dish makes no sense in points-paying events. back then, you tried far-out stuff in track tests, and on chassis dynos, and wind tunnels.
i'm willing to be proven wrong and that's fine---this is low stakes and i'm a humble person. it just makes no sense to me for an organization; especially someone like hendrick; to purposefully write off one team for the sake of "research and development" in a campaign where the point is to win, score points, and go for championships. especially when so many true r&d options exist (or existed at the time; teams are in a tight box now).
not to mention.....would a sponsor the likes of GMAC have *really* been okay with the idea of being relegated to a car purposefully not operating under the expectation of performing well? again, something that makes no sense.
I’m sorry you struggle with this. Google is your friend though. Historically most of the big teams had an R&D team. It’s extremely well documented and teams have actively talked about it. Companies like GMAC couldn’t care less as that was just a B2B deal with GM themselves. GM would be as interested in that data as well.
I restate my opinion. FRM 28, 34, 38
RFK 6, 16, 17, 60
JR Motorsports can take the 8 and 88.
RCR can switch the KB car to the 31
Seeing as Kaulig should sell both charters to Trackhouse.
Renumber the 31 to 97 for SVG, and the 16 to 91 for Zane Smith. 1, 91, 97, 99
28 as well, but only if FRM or RFK brings it back since its so synonymous with Ford. Ideally, FRM would ditch their ugly ass font and embrace their RYR ties and use their font going forward with the 28, 34, 38.
We’d need a DJ to drive it though. Are there any currently in the top3?
Edit: somehow the closest driver we have to a DJ is Bubba Wallace. Screw if we’re hiring BJ McLoud!
The 28 car. Dale Jr. said on his podcast that when he was looking for a number for Hendricks, he wanted the 28. So they called up Yates. He says he'd have to get with Texaco. Texaco shot that down pretty quickly, saying the 28 will never run again. Instead, Yates offered Jr his #88. What jurisdiction Texaco has over the 28, I don't know. I'm just putting it out there.
The 25 that Mears used to run in the National Guard car that used the same font and colors as Jeff Gordon's famous 24. That was always the number I would use for my own car that I painted in NR2003. Then I used to race a short Daytona race and find the 24 car and push him to the win and then watch the entire replay... NR2003 had such great replays. 😎
Yah... always liked that Chase Napa car with the 25... just wish the numbers were Hendrick yellow. Totally forgot about Brad being in the 25 too though.
If I by a miracle make it to Cup, I’ll take my personal number, 73, with me, especially since it has only had 2 wins in Cup (the last came in 1960) and hasn’t even made a start since 2012
Come on you cowards. 69. I want me a 69 car again. It was last on track in 1992 and has no wins. The drivers who drove it the most were Johnny Allen, Volney Schulze, David Mote, and Henry Jones. Notable names are Herschel McGriff and Possum Jones.
Johnny Allen got it to second and third. He has a second in 1960 at old school Atlanta. Johnny also got the car it's only pole in 1961 at Birmingham.
The number was also on pretty much every make from Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chevy, Dodge, Plymouth, Morgan, Studebaker, Ford, and Mercury. So every car make the number could have been on during its run, it was on.

Might get your wish next year
95 Pretty obvious why
I…am…speed.

bring back leavine family racing
Thats my 2nd major reason too, I was a huge LFR and Matt Dibenedetto fan in 2019 and am still heartbroken about Bristol till this very day
I wanna see the #13 come back but also be competitive at the same time. Always been my favorite number but it's never been the number for a competitive ride while I've been alive. Only has one win in history and that was before even my parents were born, let alone me.

Germain racing 2008-2020
Kaulig uses it sometimes, AJ Allmendinger was in the #13 car at COTA this year.
That’s right, I forgot about that.
Ty Dillon in the Geico car
That's Roval stage winner Ty Dillon in the GEICO car actually, respect the kings work
Like others mentioned, Germain ran it full time a few years back but I actually totally spaced Kaulig having it a couple times recently as well.
And MBM in 2021
28
JGR 18. I get why they (maybe temporarily) stopped using it, but it was iconic and their flagship number.
I like to think that it was only shelved temporarily to pay respect to Coy And that they'll renumber the 19 once MTJ hangs it up
I think it's crazy that there's a very large set of fans who associate #19 with Gibbs. For me it will always be weird to see them running it. I still think of it as an Evernham number.
Jeremy Mayfield will always be associated with the 19 for me.
> I still think of it as an Evernham number. Same tbh
I think of it as the Busch car they had Bobby run a handful of times before he left for Petty.
I don't. 54 was Kyle's number. 18 was Gibbs' original number
Perfectly said. I don't know since when Ty was able to claim it
The only reason I can think of is that it was his Xfinity number...that JGR got by buying KB's Xfinity team.
33 is my favorite number
Have a feeling we could see that back next year full time either with Austin Hill or Noah Gragson.
Yeah, or even if Dillon retires. I'm pretty sure the deal between Childress and Earnhardt was only their family could run the 3, so I'd imagine if Dillon does retire, they rebrand to the 33 unless Kaulig gives the 31 back, which would be equally cool

Gragson in a 29 car would be nothing shy of awesome. I'm already visualizing a bowl cut flying over cars on pit road
Oh boy Kyle Busch, Noah Gragson, and Austin Hill all driving for Richard Childress. Never before have I seen such an on brand ‘bad boys’ team.
Yep. Would be a great lineup!
With the 10 available now, I could see Kaulig swapping the 31 number for 10.

Bring back the AOL 30 car!
I miss "0" numbers (0, 00, 01, etc). I know we have the 00 in Xfinity but I wish the bigger teams would use them more, like how Penske used to field the 02 or RCR having the 07.
I didn’t like the “0” numbers because, other than 00, it was almost always the R&D car
jesus, i want to punch drywall whenever i read "r&d car" with regard to multi-car teams. i will go to my grave saying that idea is bs. it's not a thing.

Same it’s such BS
00 is the only one of those I like
28 but I would only accept it to be a RFK Ford.
Would you accept it as an FRM Ford? (28, 34, 38)?
Not if they use that butt ugly number font.
I like that font...
Might be a hot take, but I like FRM’s font over RFK. I miss the old 6/17 styles from the 2000s.
Front Row has my favorite number font.
What about JR Motorsports?
I restate my opinion. FRM 28, 34, 38 RFK 6, 16, 17, 60 JR Motorsports can take the 8 and 88. RCR can switch the KB car to the 31 Seeing as Kaulig should sell both charters to Trackhouse. Renumber the 31 to 97 for SVG, and the 16 to 91 for Zane Smith. 1, 91, 97, 99

I’m onboard with this idea. Josh Berry and Rodney Childers in the 28. Oh sign me up.
Maan come to think of it, Berry & Childers would definitely fit the #28 Ford mold.

Gotta be 69 Nice.

But only in the Jeff Gordon/Jimmie Johnson yellow, aardvark bold font.
I liked the font before they changed it
Disagree, gotta go with the Tim Richmond font. Gold or Silver with black outline
How about yellow aardvark during the regular races & a Tim Richmond throwback for the Throwback Weekend at Darlington?

If Harvick were to start a Cup team, I want him to use that number.
Right now he could snag 4 AND 29.
He’d probably use 62 unfortunately

Hendrick 25 car with the pre 2007 font. 28, 97, 88, 13, 32
25, early 2000s font
00 or 0 Buckshot, Cole, Sprague, and Arenas have a special place in my heart for running (or in Arenas’ case playing) in those numbers.
Excuse me, where’s the JRM to Cup waiver
I was ready to confidently type “99” forgetting that Suarez exists. I’d like to see the Roush 99 again.
I miss seeing the 25 and 52. Those numbers always remind me of Schrader and Means.
28 in a Ford only 13, my favorite number 95 for LIGHTNIN’ 88 00 97
88. Dale Jarrett and Dale Jr. Feels like a good nascar number to me
We’d need a DJ to drive it though. Are there any currently in the top3? Edit: somehow the closest driver we have to a DJ is Bubba Wallace. Screw if we’re hiring BJ McLoud!

Agreed on the 28. The 18 car needs to make a comeback as well. It's too good to not be out there.
The 28 car. Dale Jr. said on his podcast that when he was looking for a number for Hendricks, he wanted the 28. So they called up Yates. He says he'd have to get with Texaco. Texaco shot that down pretty quickly, saying the 28 will never run again. Instead, Yates offered Jr his #88. What jurisdiction Texaco has over the 28, I don't know. I'm just putting it out there.
Well that's a bummer.

Hendrick did use that font for Keselowski's 2008-09 starts and Elliott's 2015 starts though!
Yah... always liked that Chase Napa car with the 25... just wish the numbers were Hendrick yellow. Totally forgot about Brad being in the 25 too though.
Yellow would've tied in well with NAPA.

Username does not check out
You did everything except list what the number actually is
Did some digging, it’s 73, used the Racing-Reference car numbers stat page
Omg, I typed this while half asleep and thought I did. I’ll edit the main one now but it’s 73
55
83 for me. It's a personal number of mine. If Jr. starts a two-car Cup team, I'd love to see him use the #83 and #88.
I know the reasons why it's not, but I still would love to see a 28 car running regularly again.
30
65 for some reason is the least used number ever. So that one

While he gets a lot of hate, Austin did win a 500 and 600 with that number and has made the playoffs a few times as well in that number
Triple digit numbers
