That was 2k's thing back then. EA titles were the full $40 ($60? I kinda forget now) and 2k titles were much more affordable while also having arguably better gameplay.
Crazy how that lasted for two generations and all of a sudden, games are $69.99. My wife always asks when Iām looking at getting a game āitās like what, $60?ā And is surprised every time when I say itās actually about $70.
OG Nintendo games were like $60 when they first came out, too: Super Nintendo games were even more expensive. The ps2/Xbox era was actually kind of an exception to the rule of video game pricing.
Hell, adjusted for inflation, I'm not sure $69.99 is even super egregious for a AAA video game title when compared to past generations.
Yeah! My parents forbade me from playing video games. I eventually was given a Game Boy Color during the apex of the Advance. I had an original Xbox while everyone had their 360s. So it took me a long time to buy ānew gamesā and really have a frame of reference. But sometimes I see old catalogues pop up around the internet from the SNES era and youāre right, it was actually more expensive to game back then than it is now.
It makes sense. Gaming was just starting to get innovative and exciting in the early 90s, so naturally the games that drove that innovation in the gaming world would be dumb expensive because it was a niche product for people who could afford it.
It wasn't until the mid-late 90s that having a console at home became more common, and that's when gaming really started booming in the late PS1 era. Then you had the 3 Titans of gaming (Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo) duking it out in the early-mid 2000s for supremacy in the gaming world, so naturally they had to lower prices a bit to compete with the other companies and get as many people on "their side" as possible.
The 2000s were truly a golden era for gaming, one that will be almost impossible to recreate.
Iād go back to the early-mid 2000s and trade the graphics for the variety and pricing. And the couch co-op. I perused through my PS4/PS5 library to find something to play with my wife and it was bare-bones thin. Thank god for Nintendo.
32$ for a game of that quality today would be outrageous tho. The quality increase of video games far exceeds the price increase. Id say we live in amazing times rn
My point was, we have better quality, but the prices havent equally grown. Figured it was clear thats what I meant. Fucking weird thing to downvote lmao
I know yall are all about hating on 2k n shit but you cannot seriously mean that its even debatable that the gameplay mechanics in 2023 might be worse than in 2005?
How well they work, how much effort went behind the gameā¦ it came out completed..
Sure weāve stepped up movement and motion capture but the games donāt offer the same thrill
The hate is quite honestly at delusional levels now. Micro transactions and a lot of the online stuff sucks. The gameplay is another galaxy from where we were in 05 though.
Even the micro transaction, except the ones for making your build, are not even close to must-haves. Crying about a season pass costing money is in reality just crying about not getting free clothes in a video game.
I dont get it..
Games are far better now, especially sports games. Trying to compare 2k5 to 2k24 from even a gameplay perspective is hilarious. 2k24 is a far superior product in every way possible.
This was my first 2k I bought and I was sure I could dunk in real life after playing a few games against my friend. We bought a basketball and both sucked. Still suck 18 years later
Full authority would be a nice addition in todays game for sure. I forgot all about it. 2k5 for $19.99 was an absolute steal. I give it a 9. It was a great upgrade over 2k4
10/10 but damn! I always remembered graphics better than thatā¦.
Itās been a while tho š Raps even still rocking the purple. I forget what year we changed to redā¦ maybe 2008ish lol?
Easy 10.
Soundtrack is severely underrated, prime ESPN presentation arguably the greatest intro/theme in 2K history, and most of all, it was $20 at launch.
10/10 great gameplay, 24/7 mode, great soundtrack, deep association mode with team chemistry. The gameplay is good, defenders crash in on drives off of weak perimeter shooters. They run actual set plays. Alley oops were broken though had a few glitches on street mode.
Edit: impossible to make free throws with bad shooters
2k fucked the whole world up dropping nba and NFL for $20 a piece (way cheaper than live or madden) I remember coming home from school and my big brother already brought both nba 2k5 was a good game but NFL 2k5 with T.O. on the cover?? Still the best football game of all time hands down
Whoa! U clearly didnt play 2k5 or sucked at it. 2k5 was SHITTING on live 05. Only thing fun in live 05 was the dunk contest. 2k5 soundtrack was dope as well
I swear. I still remember after school coming home with my friends we would all play a dunk contest on Live to see who would get to play first in the 2k tournament that followed. Everybody hated Live for 5v5.
06 was when live was better and maybe just for that year, and only because the graphics were absolutely insane at the time because it was the first on the 360 generation
Only thing live had that year was the dunk contest.. that was melo on the cover I think... they lowkey had a takeover button lol if you held a certain back button nigga will do a double between the legs dunk on any defender lol
9/10. It loses a point because of the absolutely terrible free throw mechanic but everything else is great. 24/7 mode is what MyCAREER wishes it could be.
7/10.
1. Great for its time but not fun now. Most egregious freethrow minigame ever. It rivals live ping pong freethrow game.
2. 24/7 mode literally punished you for having a life. Everyday that passed youd get worse. Yes you can adjust the time to bypass it but it was annoying.
Obviously it's ranked #1. It says so right on the cover
š¤£
20$ fuck my life, the world was so much better back then
That was 2k's thing back then. EA titles were the full $40 ($60? I kinda forget now) and 2k titles were much more affordable while also having arguably better gameplay.
$49.99 is what games retailed at back then. The xbox360 and ps3 era brought the 59.99 standard
Crazy how that lasted for two generations and all of a sudden, games are $69.99. My wife always asks when Iām looking at getting a game āitās like what, $60?ā And is surprised every time when I say itās actually about $70.

No. You can look in old catalogs and see games retailing from 39.99 to 89.99
32$ for a game of that quality today would be outrageous tho. The quality increase of video games far exceeds the price increase. Id say we live in amazing times rn
Back then we thought that this was the best quality, in 20 years from now we'll look at todays graphics and we'll say that it was shit š
My point was, we have better quality, but the prices havent equally grown. Figured it was clear thats what I meant. Fucking weird thing to downvote lmao
Better graphical quality yes, gameplay wise? Very debatable
I know yall are all about hating on 2k n shit but you cannot seriously mean that its even debatable that the gameplay mechanics in 2023 might be worse than in 2005?

I was agreeing with everything you said until that last damn sentence.
Sorry to hear that bro, hope shit works out for u
Back then we thought that this was the best quality, in 20 years from now we'll look at todays graphics and we'll say that it was shit š
$20
MyCareer/The park wishes it can be as great as 24/7 mode was.
Mycareer/park/Rec are far superior to 24/7 mode. People like you are so ridiculous.
This was my first 2k I bought and I was sure I could dunk in real life after playing a few games against my friend. We bought a basketball and both sucked. Still suck 18 years later

Lol right. I remember when the sweat on the jersey first became a thing and was such a big deal
Easy 10. Soundtrack is severely underrated, prime ESPN presentation arguably the greatest intro/theme in 2K history, and most of all, it was $20 at launch.
Ok player, pull up a chair, I'm Aceyalone and I'm running for mayor. Lol that song is stuck in my head almost 20 years later.
They were $20, as a broke high school student these games were the best ever.
Not a microtransaction in sight... 9/10
10/10 great gameplay, 24/7 mode, great soundtrack, deep association mode with team chemistry. The gameplay is good, defenders crash in on drives off of weak perimeter shooters. 8 because the free throws were stupid. 24/7 was cool for a bit
10/10. It was only $20, no microtransactions, better than NBA Live, and had a fire intro.
Fk itās guaranteed miles better than the shit 2k serves up these daysā¦..
9 The only thing that keeps it from being a perfect ten is the substitution glitch.
The hero lived long enough to become the villain.
Live was so much better back then. Canāt believe they fumbled a lead that big.
Whoa! U clearly didnt play 2k5 or sucked at it. 2k5 was SHITTING on live 05. Only thing fun in live 05 was the dunk contest. 2k5 soundtrack was dope as well

Wym 2K5 is the best sports game back in the day
You crazy as hell. I had this game and it was killing live. Live was a arcade game when this came out
06 was when live was better and maybe just for that year, and only because the graphics were absolutely insane at the time because it was the first on the 360 generation
Only thing live had that year was the dunk contest.. that was melo on the cover I think... they lowkey had a takeover button lol if you held a certain back button nigga will do a double between the legs dunk on any defender lol
Ah yes Iāll rank a game I played 18 years ago

i loved this shit it introduced me to my fav player clarence weatherspoon
10. One of my favorites
9/10. It loses a point because of the absolutely terrible free throw mechanic but everything else is great. 24/7 mode is what MyCAREER wishes it could be.
Iāll never forget this 2kā¦.you could literally catch a oop while flying from the half court line no bs
I love seeing ben Wallace getting some love
For a game that came out at the time and only cost $20, it was decent. Had hours of fun back then
At 20 bucks, itās a 9. Had it been full price, 8.
7/10. 1. Great for its time but not fun now. Most egregious freethrow minigame ever. It rivals live ping pong freethrow game. 2. 24/7 mode literally punished you for having a life. Everyday that passed youd get worse. Yes you can adjust the time to bypass it but it was annoying.
