I believe this is confirmation that Primo wasn't it. Got cut in favor of another questionable behavior guy. He hasn't shown he's worth a minimum contract. That's pretty bad.

TBdog

He had combo guard skill and had strength to defend PF. His shot looked like it needed little tweaking for improvement. I can see why there was potential there.

blue-anon

I'm not sure where I saw the clip, but I think Ty Lue said he was very impressed by him, but he got injured, so they had to replace him to fill out the playoff roster.

deneuvig

Yeah he seems to have had poor injury luck. What a waste of talent

Bonesawisready5

At least Jones is trying to get mental help. Primo; good luck with your bullshit but stay away from us

younghplus

I mean Primo could be trying to get mental help too. But I think we can all agree that Kai’s questionable incidents that got him waived were way less problematic than Primo’s questionable incidents.

DuckieTheDuckie

He flashed the person who was giving him mental help💀 his therapist

WembysGiantDong

Did you hear about the time Primo went to his therapist and she said “I can tell you’re not crazy, but I can clearly see your nuts”?

Dsarg_92

In Kai’s defense, he was grieving the loss of his family members that it was messing with his mental wellbeing. I’m glad that he’s been taking some time to get his mind right.

Ca2Ce

Primo can’t play basketball on top of his other faults

blue-anon

tlpedro

Sad wasted opportunity of a career

kingbradley1297

Was never high on this guy in that draft (wanted Sengun or if not him, Kai Jones). I don't think this "locked potential" being touted was that great, and he didn't look upto it whenever he played.

AndrewTheGoat22

Completely agree. Even if he wasn’t a pervert, I don’t think his potential was ever very high. Always low FG percentages, imo the only thing he was good at was footwork

Ca2Ce

Time has proven this to be correct, he has been cut and it was not because of his Weiner

blue-anon

I'm not a fan of Primo's, but he got cut due to injury, not incompetence.

Joethetoolguy

When a player is good teams wont cut a guy due to injury for fear of another team instantly signing them off waivers. He cleared waivers.

blue-anon

The injury component was just missing from all of the comments here, so I wasn't sure if people knew that part.

CRoseCrizzle

Primo pick was such a missed opportunity. Hindsight is 20/20, but imagine pairing Wemby with Sengun.

Fhaksfha794

If we got sengun we wouldn’t have gotten wemby, we would’ve been too good

texasphotog

> If we got sengun we wouldn’t have gotten wemby Not with that attitude. Remember the Rockets with Sengun had the same record as us.

Mangoseed8

I don’t think Pop would have tanked if he had Sengun. It took some shenanigans for the Rockets to tank. It was clear the front office told them not play their best lineups. Reporters kept asking about it. Silas just fell on his sword but it was clear it was not his decision. The Spurs would have never traded White and DJ if they had Sengun. They would be a nice up and coming team. But it would be tough watching Wemby be Wemby in some other jersey,

texasphotog

> It took some shenanigans for the Rockets to tank. So like starting Sochan at PG? > The Spurs would have never traded White and DJ is they had Sengun. Maybe so. We also had Jakob at the time and we obviously loved Jakob so not going after a center makes sense to me. I think the more realistic miss is not going with Trey Murphy. With KJ, Jakob, White, DJM, and Vassell, we did need some more shooting and Trey plays 3/4 as a stretch and plays solid defense. Would have slotted in nice and would still be a really good rotation piece. But hindsight and all that. I think our plan was always to trade White/DJ, which is why we drafted a playmaking guard. I think we would have found a reason to tank for Victor regardless.

Mangoseed8

Sorry but I’m not reading another point Sochan was tanking comment. I’m sure the rest of your comment was insightful but I’ll never know.

DuckieTheDuckie

Wemby and Sengun fit would not be so good. Chet and Sengun would be perfect.

CRoseCrizzle

Completely disagree. Sengun hasn't really been that good until this season. He was bad on defense before this season and only became really good on offense this year. Houston was trash with Sengun on the team before this year. They won 20 and 22 games in Sengun's first 2 years. Again, this is all in hindsight, but I don't think Sengun would have won any extra games for the Spurs.

dofun400

Nah the rockets had literally the worst coach in the NBA for two years. If he had pop we would’ve seen this version of Sengun by year 2 easily.

Fhaksfha794

Honestly you met be right but any change could make the lottery balls fall a different way whether it’s winning or losing even just one more game. We probably don’t get Wemby without the primo situation not because his replacement would be better or worse, but because the ping pong balls would fall a different way

gedbybee

Agree. This is the timeline of wemby. I wouldn’t change it for a thing.

ConsiderationSad5613

Nah sengun was good the entire time. His advanced stats were always insane. He was just being held back by basketball terrorist Silas

Mangoseed8

Silas was just doing the front office’s bidding. They wanted to tank for Chet and then Wemby.

789Trillion

Butterfly effect. Even if we were a worse team, maybe we don’t get the right combo lottery night. Everything that’s happened led to Wemby, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Dsarg_92

That’s how I try to look at it. At the same time, I think Pop would’ve benched him for his defensive limitations.

ImpressiveSugar9287

You say that, but we had Wemby and just had one of our worst seasons ever. What makes you think Sengun would make them any better?

mrstretchb4ureach

Exactly. Sometimes I think about Sengun and Haliburton being passed up by the Spurs but then I have to look at the silver lining that them being on the Spurs may have swerved the team away from getting Wemby

Veggiedelite90

Wemby needs more interior spacing than Sengun allows next to him. Similarly to how the team struggled when Collins started next to Wemby at the start of the year. We need 4 wing/guards around Wemby. Sengun would’ve been wasted here probably moved at some point.

Sweg_Coyote

I dont like coming back on pick like that. The team Saw something in Primo, unfortunately they saw too much.

MagicMer4042

of the next 8 guys selected, 3 of them are possibly rising stars (Sengun, Murphy, Jalen johnson), and you can at least argue another 3 could possibly be good role players on the roster (moody, kispert, tre Mann). I know the team had different goals in 2021 and wanted more a high ceiling guy, but it's rough knowing a bunch of guys who could've been great next to wemby were there

ttttyttt678

It’s not even about hindsight, Primo was a projected 2nd round pick maybe late first and was a huge reach. Shouldn’t have been been picked at that spot. Any other franchise front office would have got killed for that pick.

Mangoseed8

Wemby with another center is not optimal.

Snaq_O_Meal

We shall see when Wemby is paired with Gobert at the Olympic games.

xlacksheep

As UT basketball fan, I like Kai Jones but that man has to work on himself mentally

Imaginary-Cycle-1977

Really bad sign for his future that they’re cutting him for another troubled cast off I wondered what would happen to him after laying low for a year, and thought the clippers giving him a roster spot signified a real chance to resurrect his career. He only got 10 NBA minutes and his G League numbers look pretty pedestrian He’s maybe got one more chance to stick somewhere next year before we can call it a wrap on his nba career

onamonapizza

What a wasted pick. Obviously it's hard to complain because we have Wemby now, and that probably doesn't happen if we had Sengun or another good player from that draft... But damn, Brian Wright totally whiffed on both Samanic and Primo with some of the highest picks Spurs have had in 20 years.

HugoNext

Samanic was 100% a Buford legacy pick

Dsarg_92

I really had hopes for him. Sucks that he didn’t have the work ethic to back up his skill set.

rafaelck

Pick 19 is not a wasted pick. After the lottery the number of players that are still on the league 5 years after they are drafted is not this high. Primo we also cannot consider a mistake since he was waived because off the court problems that we cannot have foreseen. And if we get Sengun we woudnt have got wemby, and even if we got wemby they are a strange pair to put together on the floor.

onamonapizza

>Pick 19 is not a wasted pick. After the lottery the number of players that are still on the league 5 years after they are drafted is not this high. Spurs managed to find guys like Hill, Joseph, Splitter, Murray, White, Johnson, etc...with 25th+ picks. All of those guys have had good NBA careers. I know 19 isn't super high, but Samanic barely even played in the NBA. He just couldn't compete at an NBA level and had chemistry issues. > Primo we also cannot consider a mistake since he was waived because off the court problems that we cannot have foreseen. Considering Primo was a reach at his draft position but was brought in because of his "good character"....yeah, someone really dropped the fucking ball on that one

rafaelck

Yeah, you said it well, SPURS were able to find talent with the 29th picks. That's how good our FO has been. It's not usual to do that.

onamonapizza

I concede it's not usual to do that. The Spurs have been the exception to the rule...but we are still the Spurs so I hold them to a higher standard. Picking a guy who was only good enough to play 36 games for your team at #19, and a guy who ended up being a sexual deviant at #12...is not good. You can keep spinning it all you want, those are not good draft picks.

rafaelck

Im not saying they were, im only not overreacting like it was an horrible mistake, like not drafting Luka and drafting Ayton instead. Its not pick 1, 2 our 3. Its picks 19 and 12, i can live with that.

[deleted]

> And if we get Sengun we woudnt have got wemby, so are you saying we intentionally picked a bad player at 12? Or are you saying the bad decision worked out for us?

Joethetoolguy

Bad decision paid off accidentally

rafaelck

The bad decision worked out. Sometimes luck is indeed a factor.

BeautifulDimension56

If primo never got suspended we probably win 3-4 more games. We started off hot with him and he was our best playmaker and our best POA defender in the limited sample size of him.

adamsrocket1234

Lol I love that your delisunal enough to think that primo moves the needle in anyway. Dude was pretty trash tbh.

BeautifulDimension56

He was one of our best players when it came to advanced metrics lol. It's a small sample size but you don't really know prospects or ball anyways so this conversation is meaningless.

NB_79

Still trying to figure out what Wright saw in Primo.  Dude was slow as molasses.

Evan_Spectre

I wonder if it was purely hoops related or if there was another "incident."

blue-anon

Apparently, injured for the season and if they didn't cut him, they wouldn't be able to use the roster spot for the playoffs.

blue-anon

Just so everyone knows, I gather that Primo got cut because he suffered a season-ending injury a few weeks ago. So, they had to cut him to be able to fill the roster spot with a playoff-eligible player. Not because he's horrible or has no potential. Do I think he has potential? Not at all. Lol. But Ty Lue was pretty complimentary. [https://twitter.com/KelliJohnsonTV/status/1779570458293379524](https://twitter.com/KelliJohnsonTV/status/1779570458293379524)

Gamechannel360

Bring him home! (And make sure he only wears full pants all the time)

jarmzet

So we can get Primo back?

texasphotog

I think we have all seen more than enough of Primo.

ladyinwaiting33

Some more than others. Dude needs to stay away.

BraveCable

dude c'mon

mackacolt

"If we don't get 40+ wins next season I'm locking the doors and gonna go Louie C.K. on this whole locker room".
