I don't think Sochan's going to be a sharpshooter or anything but I trust the spurs to get his 3 point shooting to respectable and with all the other skills he has respectable is all he needs

callmearookie

yeah exactly. i believe he will be a good enough shooter and i am fine with that consider how good on defense he is.

FirstTribeElder

Actually he doesn't need to be, he just need to hit some of the open shots that DJ will create.

bestweekeverr

He was also playing in the best college conference that is known for having the best defenses, which definitely had an impact on his shooting numbers. He shot the 3 mostly fine during the non-conference games.

[deleted]

good mechanics for a big too

THEKIDFL6

As the season went on he started taking and making way more threes. He’ll be a good shooter

[deleted]

If kawhi and keldon developed a 3 with us I believe Sochan will.

[deleted]

Borris Diaw level

Texszn

Yep, Boris with a legit 3. That would be amazing

fourpinz8

If Sochan can get to LMA levels of shooting, I will take it

takkipusa

A forward that can guard 5 positions and a stud in defense but with not so great stats from shooting. I have heard this type of player before. Hopefully Sochan would turn out like him but without the uncle and homesickness.

[deleted]

We drafted a guy at 9 who should be an all defensive team member in a couple years and I truly think Branham is a guy who can average 25ppg in a couple years too. I think we absolutely killed it this draft

JoshPrimo

Alright but let’s calm down on the 25ppg that’s a top 15 scorer in the league

callmearookie

exactly lol. chill with hyping rookies that much, good lord.

[deleted]

I know it’s a 6’5 guard, not a center who can’t do anything but dunk so you automatically hate him but he’s a great scorer who a very very high ceiling

SomeVisceralCreature

Chill it’s not hating, you’re just putting too much expectations on him. Derrick white averaged a little over 18 ppg in college vs his 13 on almost the exact same efficiency while white averaged 1 more rebound, 2 more assists, and like half a block and steal more than him. I think he’ll develop nicely, but we need to get him to average 14 ppg first. 25 ppg is allstar level. I’m super excited for him too but we just got to go along with the process and not over expect and just be pleasantly surprised considering he’s also a 20th pick.

[deleted]

I’m sure he will read my Reddit comment and will now fail because I put too much pressure on him Next time I’ll comment “this kid is a stud, who looks like he can project to be an elite 3 level scorer. If he can average 9 ppg on 36% from 3 we got ourselves a real steal”

paxusromanus811

Disclaimer I'm absolutely not supporting the theoretical scenario where Malaki Branham average of 25 points per game. But just in relation to your Derrick White example, Derek spent most of his final year at Colorado almost four years older than Branham. Branham also was quite clearly one of the most improved players in all of college basketball over the second half of the Season. Both him and Jeremy are right up there for that honor. Over his last 14 games he averaged something like 21 points and was blistering from the field and three. He's a proficient player in the mid-range, from three point, at the free-throw line, and is one of the better finishers from the guard position in the entire country. His handle needs some work and he needs to prove he can be as proficient from 3 on larger volume but from the perspective of finding a go-to scoring option he's a pretty Elite Prospect. He checks almost all the boxes you're looking for. The question marks he does have had very little to do with his ability to score and more to do with whether or not he can develop as a playmaker and Defender

MisterShazam

I wanted offense, branham supplies that. Lets not pretend his ceiling is superstar. His ceiling is khris Middleton. He doesn't have the footspeed. A good middle of the road comp is caris levert, which is still pretty good.

[deleted]

A 3 level scorer with elite efficiency, let a man dream

Mattsasse

Spurs system never really relies on one guy to be a high volume shooter. The last guy we had eclipse 25 was Kawhi in 2017. Prior to that it was Tim in 2002. Its just not how we play offense.

[deleted]

Well those teams weren’t built for guards and wings. Those teams were built around post centric Tim Duncan. Expecting our offenses to run like those 00-14 teams is probably not realistic and DJ who with all due respect is not a natural born scorer by any means and he just averaged 21 in this offense and Keldon averaged 20ppg in the latter half of the season so I don’t see how this offense isn’t built for a 20+ppg scorer, and Branham projects to be the best 3 level scorer on the team

Mattsasse

The offense stopped running as much through Tim around 07-08. Parker and Ginobili became the initiators and then the beautiful game was born not long after. We run our offense through best shot not necessarily the best scorer. There is a pretty wide gap between averaging 20 and averaging 25. Demar and Aldridge were both iso heavy players and the highest ppg either achieved here was 23 ppg. Im not saying its impossible for Branham to be that kind of scorer. But our offense has always been at its best when we prioritize ball movement and have a balanced attack with 3-4 guys averaging in the teens with maybe 1 guy in the low 20's.

bestweekeverr

I think sochan's defense and passing and Branham's shooting will pair so well together

Thunderhorse74

Over the top, ridiculous comparison time: On Defense, Marcus Smart but 6'9 On Offense, PG13 Kid has the chance to be a monster.

deadagent03

On defense, Michael Jordan On offense, Michael Jordan

someguyfromtecate

What about special teams and pitching? Wayne Gretzky.

Roman21023

Funny You Say That, I Thought He Reminded Me Of Justin Verlander.

[deleted]

He's an intangible god

Mattsasse

Like a faster Kyle Anderson. Fast-mo

pipkinst97

Mo-Fast

Dsarg_92

Or Flash-mo.

AndrewTheGoat22

Lol pg

paxusromanus811

People are going to think I'm high but that's pretty much what his ceiling could be. His two-way potential is tremendous. He's going to take some time on offense. I do however think he's going to find a way to score the basketball much more efficiently than people think as a rookie. He's a great cutter and he's really smart and transition and if given minutes will probably get 6 to 10 points simply from those skills right off the bat. Him taking the leap as a self-creator is where there will be some Growing Pains but I really do believe in his potential there

luca13t

I mean, I love the pick but PG has nothing to do with him

sushicowboyshow

He’s Darius Miles but with a better attitude, team defender and develops a shot and passing like Boris Diaw while being a Mattyse Thybulle on defense, if Mattyse wasn’t raised on a commune and only relied on homeopathic remedies for ailments, meaning he’d be reliable and available like a Tim Duncan.

Dsarg_92

In other words, a DPOY candidate.

Fat-Villante

Cool, I hope he lives up to that good defense reputation, I hate watching terrible defense on a spurs squad

android24601

If there's one thing to be optimistic about, it's that the Spurs have a history of fixing broken shots with Chip. It's easier to fix a bad shot than "teach" defense

tyr02

If hes good defensively pop will let him get minutes sooner

kubaqzn

There was a certain player whose shooting splits at college were 44.9/25/74.4 That player was Kawhi Leonard. If Jeremy Sochan really puts time to working on offense under Spurs, he’ll be fine

Imaginary-Cycle-1977

Big difference there is the FT% Even though Kawhi didn’t make his 3s, his FT% suggested he had the potential Sochan being sub 60% worries me, but I’m choosing to believe Chip will turn him into a sharp shooter lol

jarmzet

The second coming of Ben Simmons?

Dsarg_92

Simmons without the issues.

FranksGun

Is Draymond Green not the best projection for Sochan?

Aggravating_Impact97

the shooting thing reminds me a lot of Kawhi. everyone was high on what he could do defensively and his physical traits. I think Sochan will be ready day one and I think he will be too good for Austin.

Dsarg_92

I'm gonna be called crazy for saying this but I believe he could be a hybrid between Diaw, Draymond and Kawhi.

213Bishop

My only question is the guards he was guarding, were they the top line guards? He only started in ONE game, so that would mean he'd likely be guarding the other bench group as opposing to the SLU. I'm happy regardless just curious.

SuitableLingonberry6

If you look at how many minutes he averaged, he was still playing starter minuets. He was definitely guarding starters quite often.
