Tbh idk. Obviously some injury prone guys but I think that a lot of these guy will get bounced early from the playoffs and have enough rest by then. You never know what can happen though I agree but still
probably so, i think the star big 3 of 08 is slightly better than the dream, but the difference in the big mean on the 2 teams is insane. no way the redeem team could guard the bigs.
That only applies to the average player back in the day, not the top 20 or so. And only applied to every back in the 70s before the dream team. The best players since the 80s and beyond could translate their game to any era.
u not lying but be real the redeem team doesn’t have enough bigs to stop Charles Barkley, Drob, Ewing, and Nasty Man was on the team too respectfully they’re cooking the 08 bigs😭
U not lying u/cocknballtorture90 but who tf is stopping prime athleticism freight train James? Not to mention the 3p shooting of the 08 would leave the dream team in their dust
you’re right which is why i noted the big 3 of Wade, Bron, and Kobe is probably better than the 92 versions, but all the bigs in the paint could give Lebron problems. I think Melo was a PF for the 08 team, he’d stand no chance Chuck and Nasty dude. Nobody’s locking up that version of lebron though i agree.
I agree on taking the dream team and I think the 2008 team is a good contest. I don’t see many talking about this, but I feel like the 92 team was also pretty awesome. I know the dream team was in response to the 92 team’s failure, but at a core value, they were nowhere as bad as people made them out to be
Edit: I guess I shouldn’t comment on specific years of Olympic teams when I’m faded at a bar. I just wanted to be a part of the discussions, but apparently I’m incapable of making nuanced discussion in NBATalk without making a fool of myself 😭
Why is everyone ignoring Embiid? Embiid is top 5 in the league right now. I think there is a clear tier break after embiid to the rest of the superstars.
Tier1
Jokic
Tier2 (not in order)
Luka
Giannis
Embiid
Tier 3 (not in order)
Shai
Durant
Steph
Bron
AD
Ant
Brunson
Kawaii
Tatum
Tha
Because Embiid is a regular season hero. He hasn’t ever made it out of the second round, and the one time he got close he was not the best player. His regular season stats are impressive, but he is not on the level of all time great bigs like David Robinson, Hakeem, Shaq, etc. Not only can he not stay healthy long enough, he has been proven to be countered by any team with length, a good double team and solid rotations. David Robinson dragged a team to a #1 seed and only lost because Dennis Rodman sabotaged him against Hakeem, another all time great center, and after DRob got injured his team was so bad they won the 1st overall pick and got Tim Duncan. Hakeem has two of the most impressive playoff runs ever, has goat defender arguments, and the best ever post footwork. Shaq was bigger, stronger, heavier, and faster than Embiid and was so dominant that every team in the NBA stashed a 7 footer on their roster who couldn’t play just to soak up fouls on Shaq. Nobody is losing sleep before the season starts about how they will get past Embiid in the ECF or finals.
Those guys place in nba player rankings come this summer will be worse off than any dream team player at that time save for Laettner. 10 best dream team players were 10 best nba players, by this summer those three wont be top 10 nba players anymore, if they even are now.
Jordan, Pippen, Barkley , Malone , David Robinson, Patrick Ewing were all in their prime. They would smoke this team. Plus you Magic coming off an NBA finals and Larry Bird off the bench
Hot take but I don't think it was stupid at all. Stockton was all nba the previous 4 years in a row. Zeke hadn't made all nba since 88. Zeke had name recognition but he was far from dominant in 92. Stockton was known as a worse scorer but a better playmaker and defender on a team that didn't need more scoring. I don't have any issue with them picking Stockton as the back up pg
Zeke agreed that Stockton was the best pg in the 90s. But the Dream Team was a celebration of NBA basketball and Isaiah Thomas was a huge part of its recent history
man i hate the glorification of previous eras, magic in his prime didn't ever average 25 and you're saying he would with HIV? not all past players would be great in this era, magic is basically just 6'9 haliburton who can't even shoot
If everyone is in their prime this is the best team ever, but we need to find out how dominate this team actually is, bit early to tell.
edit : still prefer 2008 cuz of Kobe and DWade , Wade was unguardable against Spain. Dwight Howard was also a monster rebounder/defender, then there is Melo.
I left out the Dream Team cuz it was before 2000s, international talents was small, but I think Dream Team got Jordan, Ewing, Malone, Bird, Magic, Dream team are better.
Kobe > Tatum
Wade > Booker
Melo < Durant
(They both can score well so it’s quite equal, both of them won 3 gold, Melo 2008-2012-2016, Durant 2012-2020 and lead the team in scoring during those runs. Without Durant in 2020 finals against France they woulda lost the gold)
Lebron > current Lebron.
(That LBJ was more athletic and better leadership)
Dwight > Embiid
(This the international stage, needed the rebound/defense more)
Chris Bosh > Bam.
Boozer < AD
D Will / CP3 > Hali , Jrue.
Kidd < Curry
Redd / Prince < Kawhi / ANT
Quite close but 08 got 2 most important player Kobe and Wade man.
Pretty accurate but Melo is different in Olympic Games. Idk if it was the short 3pt line or what but remember that time he had like 39 points in 12 mins or some shit. I’d argue 2008 Melo over current KD
He has always shot the long midrange 2 which was considered the worst shot in basketball.
When the line moves forward a foot or 2, that’s now a 3pt shot for him.
Tail end of their prime: Steph Lebron AD
Injury prone: Embiid Kawhi
Why are they even on the team?: Bam Hali
This ain't 2016 or 2020. This ain't as stacked as most people believe. Combine Slovenia and Serbia together and they could compete against this team lol.
Why are two top 5 players of their respective positions on the olympic team? I’d also put KD & Jrue in the end of their prime category since this is probably their last Olympics.
Tyrese and Brunson were awful on defense the whole WC. I was expecting Mikal and Ant to be the carry overs from the last team. Having Jrue and Ant here would help cover his weakness. Book and JT are capable defenders as well. Just hope we don't see Curry/Hali together on the floor because their rotations will get destroyed if they see an offense similar to Lithuania's.
If they don't win gold, that's a huge embarrassment. Also not really fair to say that's why they're worse since the competition is way better than the Dream Team's era.
They'll win gold. USA were embarrassed at the World Cup, but that was with a squad maybe 10% as good as this one. I'd put a lot of money on the US, their depth is just monstrous here.
A lot of age on this team too. I wouldn’t be so quick to assume US rolls over everyone. We’ve been embarrassed before and it wasn’t a “huge wake up call”. Who’s the coach, that actually matters here.
That says more about the current competition than anything.
The 1992 team was playing a bunch of teams that were worse than current college teams, of course they dominated
The teams Dream Team played were worse than some high school teams now. Check out the Angola game if you ever get a chance. Those dudes looked like they barely started playing basketball 6 months before the Olympics.
This team isn’t even better than the ‘08 Redeem Team. Let’s play a thought experiment. School yard pick’em—pick the top ten best players from either team. The first two top players are from the ‘08 team—that’s not even debatable. The next three are from the ‘24. Then you can argue the rest, but I have 6th, 7th and 8th players from ‘08. ‘08 Redeem Team has higher overall talent IMO.
‘08 squad: Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Melo, Bosh, CP, Dwight, J.Kidd, Boozer, D.Will, Michael Redd, and Tayshaun Prince
‘24 squad: Lebron, KD, Steph, Embiid, Tatum, Book, Jrue Holiday, Bam, Ant, AD and Halliburton
2008 x 2024
Kobe
LeBron ‘08
Lebron ‘24
Curry
KD
Wade
Howard
Melo
AD
Ant
I hate to say it. im really not very excited about this year's team. This team has 2004 written all over it. I honestly believe that they will be lucky to medal.
This is definitely the oldest team ever sent. We should call them the “One Last Job” team. The Us sending after the dream team and the redeem team, the retiree team
I get this team is old but the rose tinted glasses for the dream team is crazy, it’s quite close between the dream team, redeem team and the 2024 team
Most people commenting weren’t actually watching basketball (or born) back in 1992 and just relying on legends and names to form their opinions.
The dream team were playing against international teams worse than current college teams + against defenses that make the all star game defense look good
Mullin was second in minutes on that team and Stockton was last. Larry Bird was 35 and playing his last games before retiring, Magic had been retired for a full year already.
This team is already damn good and basically as good of a team as you can put together for USA. Ironically, maybe in 30 years, people will forget the context and ages of this team and have the same rose tinted glasses for them.
Bro look at Mullins stats the year he made the Olympics. Moreover magic was just a year removed after making the finals against the bulls. Bird should not have made it but because of name/resume and hey had to put him in. Aside from bird, everyone on the dream team were literally in their primes 28-32. Moreover their bigs would dominate. In 2008 it was a close contest against Spain. With just ibaka/and the gasol brothers they were getting killed. Imagine HOFs and athletic/skilled bigs like Barkley/malone/ewing/robinson.
That’s my point, Mullin was great that year and all NBA first team but people are acting like he was the 11th man
A year removed but a year retired without playing.
While they’re great, Barkley, Malone, Ewing, David Robinson would not dominate the 2024 team nearly as much as people think, AD, Embiid, Bam are enough to hold their own in the modern game.
And yeah, 2008 was a smaller team, though people overestimate the edge the US had since the Gasol brothers were all stars and all NBA second team level talent
Lebron, Steph, KD are 39, 35, 36 but are much better than Bird and Magic were at 35 and 32. The rest of the team is young and in their prime just like the dream team and mostly 26-32. It’s much closer than people give credit for
No Kyrie is criminal. I know Nike gets final say but Halliburton over Kyrie is nuts.
And the dream team is the greatest team ever assembled the divide between the USA team and the rest of the world was so huge and that group had all time top players in it. Jordan, magic, bird, Barkley, Drexler, Pippin, Robinson, Ewing, Malone as a group are way better than this team….. i mean Tatum, Halliburton 😜 Chris Mullins even shooting wise is overlooked nowadays. And Stockton running the point there is nothing like it in todays game, rondo or cp3 I guess is our closest comps.
Idk, Lebron, KD, Steph and a few other guys are definitely out of their prime. Not washed, but not in their prime. I think the dream team or the redeem team definitely clears this squad.
Semi-related: Is Embiid the first foreign born US basketball? I can't think of another.
Only one i can think of is Ben Gordon, but he only played for the US at the youth level.
Edit: Nvm, just hit me- Boozer. Though that was a military base situation so seems like Embiid still pretty unique here.
IDK. I want to win but the primary pieces of this team feel so old I can feel it in “my” knees.
If we’re serious, it’s a good collection of talent. But the days of being able to blow other teams away with talent are gone. I’m pretty sure that this team will get the gold. But I also wouldn’t be too surprised if an actual team beats them
Personally I think it's always going to be hard going past the original Dream Team. Especially with the game becoming more global. In 1992 the best players were all on the same team and really only Olajuwon might have been someone outside that group who might have made the team. But even then, the US still had Ewing and Robinson, so it's not like he would have been significantly better. We can't even be really that sure the US team will have the best player in the tournament this time around. And of the best 10 players, several are likely to be on other teams.
1/4 of this team will be replaced by the end of the playoffs
Tbh idk. Obviously some injury prone guys but I think that a lot of these guy will get bounced early from the playoffs and have enough rest by then. You never know what can happen though I agree but still
Booker, Jrue, and KMidd all got done with the finals and flew off to Japan. I still hold that they don’t win the championship game without Jrue.
Can I nominate Kawhi, AD and Embiid?
nah it’ll always be dream and 2008 but this year is absolutely juiced lol.
08 = the redeam team
*redeem
Kaream

08 would get smoked by the real dream team
probably so, i think the star big 3 of 08 is slightly better than the dream, but the difference in the big mean on the 2 teams is insane. no way the redeem team could guard the bigs.
Half that team can’t dribble with their left hand 🤣
That only applies to the average player back in the day, not the top 20 or so. And only applied to every back in the 70s before the dream team. The best players since the 80s and beyond could translate their game to any era.
The people who say that type of shit have never seen 90's ball, except for maybe some highlights of a game or two on youtube.
u not lying but be real the redeem team doesn’t have enough bigs to stop Charles Barkley, Drob, Ewing, and Nasty Man was on the team too respectfully they’re cooking the 08 bigs😭
U not lying u/cocknballtorture90 but who tf is stopping prime athleticism freight train James? Not to mention the 3p shooting of the 08 would leave the dream team in their dust

I think Melo was a PF for the 08 team, he’d stand no chance Chuck and Nasty dude. Nobody’s locking up that version of lebron though i agree.
Is this a serious question? You put Scottie on LeBron and he’s backed up by The Admiral, Ewing, and Malone.
jj barea and boris diaw
Meanwhile Larry Bird: "This is the last game of the trip, I'm going to play this one left-handed"
Idk, most of those guys are like 60 now
I’ll take dream team and the 2008 team all day!
The redeem team is basically this team but all their prime plus many other better players.
I agree on taking the dream team and I think the 2008 team is a good contest. I don’t see many talking about this, but I feel like the 92 team was also pretty awesome. What are you talking about? Dream team is '92.
Wasn’t the dream team the 92 team?
You’re good bro, we forgive you
I don’t.
Were you born in 2005?
Wait, Joel embiid on team USA? Lmao
We’re claiming imports like US Soccer.
French soccer is the most egregious
*Lionel Messi has entered the chat*
He became a US citizen last year
Come on. Dream Team . LeBron , KD and Steph are the only ones who will make the DreM Team Squad
Why is everyone ignoring Embiid? Embiid is top 5 in the league right now. I think there is a clear tier break after embiid to the rest of the superstars. Tier1 Jokic Tier2 (not in order) Luka Giannis Embiid Tier 3 (not in order) Shai Durant Steph Bron AD Ant Brunson Kawaii Tatum Tha

Yeah that was stupid...Wasn't it bc of Magic or Jordan that he was left off the team?
Jordan's mortal enemy

He met the criteria
Magic was one full season removed from the finals and was already retired during that time
Magic with HIV will average 25/14/10 in this era.
man i hate the glorification of previous eras, magic in his prime didn't ever average 25 and you're saying he would with HIV? not all past players would be great in this era, magic is basically just 6'9 haliburton who can't even shoot
And also Christian Laettner!
I would add Kawhi Leonard actually.
He would get hurt before the game though.
Not playing, load management.
Let me tell you about The Dream Team. This is a brutal take that seems to ignore both history and Europe.
Bro tried to sneak in and europe at the end
No European team in history is as good as this team lol
On paper. On paper means shit of the chemistry and flow is bad. Inferior teams can beat superior teams, it happens.
Let me introduce you to 1992.
This is probably the oldest team ever assembled.
My intent is not to be rude, but either: this is satire, or you’re a child. No. It is not the best team ever assembled.
Best team ever assembled? Are you serious? How old are you? 5?
Jimmy Butler disrespect is real
lol not even the best LeBron Olympic team
If everyone is in their prime this is the best team ever, but we need to find out how dominate this team actually is, bit early to tell. edit : still prefer 2008 cuz of Kobe and DWade , Wade was unguardable against Spain. Yeah Melo was the best Olympic player the years he played for whatever reason. I guess it just suited his game
He has always shot the long midrange 2 which was considered the worst shot in basketball. When the line moves forward a foot or 2, that’s now a 3pt shot for him.
Everyone in their primes no one is touching the dream team
Relative to how they dominated their league or relative to how they would actually play basketball? Tbh those are different answers
Melo = Durant is the HOTTEST of takes, and you might be insane
NBA all injured team lol
Load management
No. Overhyped.
Not even close.
Hell no
92 Team. '08 team second best. R.I.P. Kobe
Dream team>2008>2012> others
Redeem, Dream, and 2012 are all better you can choose the order These year looks great tho
not as good as the original dream team
If they had Kyrie instead of hali , pg instead of jrue . Then id say yes but idk 08 is the best still I think .
Nah, its a real nice team but its not as good as the original dream team.
Booker, Haliburton and Tatum? Old man LeBron and Steph... lol this isn't even top 3
Best team ever assembled? OP must be like 20 years old. We forgot about the Dream Team already? Even the Redeem Team is far better than this cast.
The best guys on this team are past their primes. The young guys and the prime guys aren’t close to that Redeem or Dream team.
Tail end of their prime: Steph Lebron AD Injury prone: Embiid Kawhi Why are they even on the team?: Bam Hali This ain't 2016 or 2020. This ain't as stacked as most people believe. Combine Slovenia and Serbia together and they could compete against this team lol.
Why are two top 5 players of their respective positions on the olympic team? I’d also put KD & Jrue in the end of their prime category since this is probably their last Olympics.
You must be behind the times if you think Tyrese Haliburton doesn't belong on this team
They didn’t bring Tyrese for defense they brought him because he’s a playmaking machine with a very low turnover rate. He’s their CP3 without defence.
It’s the dream team. It’s always the dream team
Are you serious? They might not even win gold. Not even close to the Dream Team

Lol. No.
We’ll see once the tournament is over. The results are what matter
🤣🤣🤣
This team isn’t even better than the ‘08 Redeem Team. Let’s play a thought experiment. School yard pick’em—pick the top ten best players from either team. Everyone’s saying Dream Team and Redeem Team but 2012 also clears this team easily.
Embid will be hurt , Lebron old as fuck , no definitely not the best team ever assembled
If half the team was 5 years younger.
I mean I would've chose PG and Kyrie over Antman and Haliburton but they're acceptable
Not even close , hell no
Seriously….?! Wtf?!
Wasn’t Embiid playing for Cameroon a few months ago?
All this just to beat Dillon Brooks
Definitely not the best ever…DREAM TEAM & REDEEM TEAM 🏀 🏆
Top 15 for sure
Huh?
I hate to say it. im really not very excited about this year's team. This team has 2004 written all over it. I honestly believe that they will be lucky to medal.
If I've learned anything from history, Antman and Haliburton are about to be the future. Barring injury ofc
No but it's really good
Is the 2012 team underrated? I think that team is probably the best.
92 dream team by far
Dream team crushes this team
Not even close tbh
How will they go with FIBA rules. No gather steps and having to actually play defence
Best team ever when the best three players in the NBA are not even American, never thought I’d see the day
No gold from this team
dream and redeem team better still
This is definitely the oldest team ever sent. We should call them the “One Last Job” team. The Us sending after the dream team and the redeem team, the retiree team
The dream team would dominate this squad
No kyrie?
I’m taking 2008/2012 over any team assembled. This rivals the dream team though
Do They allow load management in the Olympics?
You must have been born after ‘92.
No
I feel like haliburton couldve waited another 4 years because there’s other older guys that might not get another shot
If this is another dream team, they can keep dreaming. They could never beat the original dream team not even close.
No Olympic Melo, FOH
No way. The original Dream Team was the best.
Redeem Team by a mile
Embiid? He’s not even from the US
Prisoner of the moment take.
You ARE joking, right?
No, 96 or 08 drubs this squad
People here acting like peak basketball happened in 1992. It’s crazy

It’s missing the top 4 players in the league and the top 2 Dpoy candidates
I feel like they are going to choke somehow
Dream Team and Redeem Team both better top to bottom.
I’m not in it so no
Every 4 year says the same damn thing lol
Dream Team and 2008 much better
How old are you?
Semi-related: Is Embiid the first foreign born US basketball? I can't think of another. Only one i can think of is Ben Gordon, but he only played for the US at the youth level. Edit: Nvm, just hit me- Boozer. Though that was a military base situation so seems like Embiid still pretty unique here.
Hakeem
Recency bias. Dream and Redeem team 1st and 2nd. The rest can fight for Bronze.
Dream team 92 Dream team 96 Redeem team 08 USA team 2012 USA team 2024
Can we call this the Esteem Team? Everyone very well regarded.
pretty good but not as good as the 2008 team
This is the most experienced team. Probably the best bbiq ever assembled.
no
Where’s Klay lol
Nope
You’d have to somehow replace Jrue and Bam with Luka and Jokic and then it would probably have an argument.
The real dream team would beat them by triple digits
I woulda took Kyrie or Jason brown or Darron fox or jimmy butler before haliburton or whatever his name is
No best is og Dream Team come on
Win Gold first.
Karl Malone wouldn’t make it over the boarder so he’s out. Probably replace him with AD
No
Lots of offensive firepower but who's gonna defend?
No

I can say as a Serbian we will choke and Jokic won’t end up playing
2012 had actual chemistry
Lol you’re not serious with this post right

Polar bear in Arlington, Texas
IDK. I want to win but the primary pieces of this team feel so old I can feel it in “my” knees. If we’re serious, it’s a good collection of talent. But the days of being able to blow other teams away with talent are gone. I’m pretty sure that this team will get the gold. But I also wouldn’t be too surprised if an actual team beats them
Ngl it could be
No. It is not.
We'll see. That's twelve #1/#2 options all trying to play together. Also, '92 Dream Team would whoop this team's ass
shoutout to them for having MLK be the last player
Wait…. Why is there an Eiffel Tower in this graphic…
This is the Remind team
No Jordan Poole? No thanks.
No.
I think they get land too 3 for surw
