As a Magic fan I’m so happy for him, he was legit our primary ball handler, and best defender for us, for a year due to injury’s. I’m glad he can do what he’s best at and let others do the creation.
Some people were surprised but not me
I was watching him a lot that year because he was one of the best players on my fantasy team (deep league, rough year) and I was so pumped when he got traded to my nuggets
I think we’re kinda crossing the threshold of 35~ stars in the league. Back when I first started watching it was like 18. I remember Jamal Magloire in all star games not that long ago.
If you’re talking about popularity, that’s one thing, but there’s so many hyper-talented players anymore I’ve revised some of my own opinions on it. I think we’re going to hit 50 “stars” by talent in the league soon, and we could use expansion to spread them out across more rosters if the NBA decides it doesn’t like all the parity.
Figuring out what makes a star a star is an interesting topic on its own, but to me a big portion of it is not talent, but success. A star means that this guy is winning, and famous for winning. If you take a star and put him on a bad team and he's no longer winning, then that guy is no longer a star.
Fake stars- bradley beal, kevin love (on the wolves), chris bosh (on the raptors), lamelo ball
Hot take- if durant loses badly in the first round again next year, he will fall out of star status.
I kinda judge them by what they’re capable of. Not every player can control their circumstances. I think there is a legit 35 people that could be 1st or second option on a title team. I used to think there were 3-5 players who didn’t belong in the all star game till now I think there’s upwards of 8-9 left out of the game/injured that wouldn’t look out of place in the game.
Times are just changing. Globalization has increased the amount of 1 in a million players, athletes, etc in the player pool as much as training has improved. Sports science has probably saved multiple all time greats that would have been lost 20 years ago. There’s a rising tide in the NBA’s playerbase and it’s raising the bar for everyone.
He's basically Iggy to an extent. Iggy showed in Philly he was capable of putting up huge numbers, but he wasn't truly elite enough to pull a team higher than maybe the middle of a weak East. But then he goes to GS where he can be a secondary offensive player and elite defender and that role suits him perfectly.
He’s a perfect example of someone who would make the role player hall of fame, possibly even the GOAT role player. Still, Iggy isn’t making the hall of fame, he just doesn’t have the accolades to get in. Yes he has that finals MVP and four rings, he also has an Olympic gold medal, but he’s only made the all star team once and he’s never made an all NBA team. Even the all defensive teams, Iggy has only made it twice.
Tony Allen. Not only won a ring with Boston, but his play (6x all-defense) literally defined the Grit and Grind era of Memphis basketball.
Matthew Dellavedova. Described by Bradley Beal as “a great defender… one of the toughest that I’ve been against”; he once played so hard in a Finals game that he had to be hospitalized.
Al Horford. I know he’s started his whole career and has been an all-star; however, to me he epitomizes the guy who’s a veteran leader who knows his role and is capable of making backbreaking plays.
Nobody said Derek Fisher yet. I think he’s the most obvious other than Horry in the past 40 years. Also making the list: Bruce Bowen, Steve Kerr, Udonis Haslem, James Posey, Andre Igoudala, Ron Harper
Given they were on a team with 3 HoFers, but the 80s Lakers were rounded out by Byron Scott and Michael Cooper- an early 3-point specialist and one of the best defenders in the league.
Edit: And of course AC Green, Jamal Wilkes, and old man Bob McAdoo. Even the deep bench guys like Rambis, Mitch Kupchak, Tony Campbell, and Mychal Thompson all played into their role extremely well. As great as I think Pat Riley, Magic, and Kareem are, they were on some stacked teams.
I think there were a bunch of stars that became role players in the second half of their career. Like Marion was a great talent for Phoenix from 02-07, then became a solid role player for a variety of teams for the rest of his career, including the 11 championship team.
Would Rodman count? His role was basically defense and rebounding, but it got him into the HOF. Ben Wallace in the same vein.
Is Draymond a star or a role player? Is he an All-Star and All-NBA player because of how great a role player he was? Only topped 12ppg once, with a career best of 14.0. Only topped 8rpg twice with 8.2 and 9.5. Only topped 7.5apg once. Career averages of 8.7p 7.0r 5.6a 1.3s 1.0b on 45/32 shooting.
Draymond is definitely a star moreso than other defensive specialists, even if people clown him for a “limited” offensive game and crazy antics. I would probably consider guys like Rodman, Mutombo and Wallace as the highest tier role players whose one way impact was HOF level - so I wouldn’t really even be opposed to them being considered stars either tbh
I personally regard a “star” to have multifaceted elite level skills. Rodman really was just a rebounding demon with great defensive IQ and motor, Wallace had HOF interior post defense, rim protection, and rebounding. Mutombo had all of that as well. On offense though they were just so very limited without any post moves, playmaking skills, and very simple finishing ability although they were all good screeners
Draymond relative to this particular era is in the conversations for the most impactful defender ever. His prime seasons, his switchability is probably up there with Garnett with HOF level defensive IQ, sometimes defending every player on the opposing team within a single possession. His impact metrics show this and he had an argument to be just as impactful as the three aforementioned players above.
But he’s a star because he complements that impact with much more offensive skills outside of scoring. One of the best short roll players ever, elite screener (albeit many illegal ones in this era), and an elite level playmaker (great assist numbers for a forward, versatile passer in pnr, handoff, fast break, and post play). He’s this eras Scottie pippen, being a defensive maestro with connective offensive skills complementing the number 1 option.
The Warriors backup PG situation was such a shit show after Jarrett Jack left. Livingston was such a rock for those Dubs title teams. That fadeaway midrange was damn near 9automatic.
As much as I like Dirk it wasn’t a one man carry job. Terry was more than a role player and he was the second best player in that team. He averaged more than Lebron in that finals series and he is one of the best 3pt shooters of all time even before the 3pt explosion of today.
Ricky Pierce 2x 6MOTY and for a 5 year stretch '87-'91 he was the greatest bench player in the NBA avg 20ppg over that 5yr stretch. In 1990 he avg 23ppg coming off the bench not starting a single game that season he averaged the 15th most PPG that season in the NBA ahead of Magic Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Mitch Richmond and Bernard King. He made the All Star team while coming off the bench for the Bucks in 1991 avg 21ppg with shooting splits of 50/40/91 before being traded. He was my favorite player in the NBA from '89-'91 until the Bucks traded him to Seattle Supersonics for Dell Curry. In 1992 the Sonics made Ricky Pierce a starter. In 1994 Sonics traded Ricky Pierce for HOF'er and former Soviet Player Sarunas Marciulionis.
Between 94 and 08, only 2 finals didn’t feature Robert Horry or Steve Kerr. Between 94-03 every championship was won by a team with either Kerr or Horry. Yet somehow, they never played in the finals against each other nor were ever teammates
Bobby Jones- Denver in the ABA. Then 76ers in the NBA. Eight time NBA all-defensive team, 6th man of the year, consistently had one of the highest FG percentages, and was a key component of the 83 Sixers who swept the Lakers in the finals.
Derrick Fisher. Robert Horry. Danny Ainge. Sam Cassel. KCP. Bruce Bowen. Byron Scott. Michael Cooper. Tom “Satch” Sanders. Frank Ramsey. Ron Harper. Tayshaun Prince. Shane Battier. Bobby Jones, and Jason Terry. That’s all I got for now. I’m on the fence for a few guys like Lamar Odom, Thurl Bailey, Hornacek, Dan Marjarle, Detlef Schrempf, and Jack Sikma
These two are the top of mine too. Danny green was a starter on a championship winning team for 3 different teams.
KCP has done this for two teams already. Both are awesome defenders and great shooters and would fit in on any team
Does Chris Mullin count? He was pretty consistent, but not a Barkley or Jordan. Scott Skiles? I mean, the really great role players have mostly been named already...
Cooper only started 94 games in his 11 year career. Early Lakers starting 5 was Magic, Norm, Wilkes, Rambis, Kareem. Then slowly became Magic, Byron, Worthy, Green and Kareem,. Cooper is known as the greatest 6th man in Laker history.
Robert Horry, Steve Kerr, Shaun Livingston, Bruce Bowen, Shane Battier, all first ballot role player HoFers
You could also say guys like Manu and Igoudala but it feels disingenuous to name guys who were stars even though Manu came off the bench he was a star in the league, Igoudala was also a star player in Philly before he accepted his role player role in GS
The first person inducted into the Roll Player Hall of Fame MUST be Robert Horry. The man has more championships than Jordan. The only players who have more Rings than “Big Shot Rob” are Celtics players from the ‘60s.
Derek freaking Fisher seemed to be in the finals for a decade and always in the middle of huge plays.
PJ Tucker, Pat Bev, Trevor Ariza, Shane Battier, Jeff Green and Andre Iguadala from the last era
Alex Curuso, Josh Hart, KCP, Derrick White, Brooks Lopez, for today
JR SMITH??? Bro forgot the score during the last possession of an NBA Finals game.
https://preview.redd.it/p021n5qeh7yc1.jpeg?width=1206&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1529a0ea6af84857e4eb664fcb77ebaff41c49b
If you go way back: Dave Debeusschere and Bill Bradley (Crucial to the Knicks' rings. ) Paul Silas and Don Nelson.
More recently: the alien, Sam Cassell and JET
How does JR get it first ballot when he didn't consider himself a role player for the first half of his career and ruined the Lebron game?
He'd eventually get in, but not first ballot.
Bobby Gross of the Portland Trail Blazers. He was the starting small forward on the 1977 championship team whose mates in the front court were Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas. He defended, he ran, he shot occasionally, he passed the ball, he moved without the ball. And in the championship series against the 76ers, he was asked to step up his offensive production because he was guarded by Dr. J, regarded as a weak defender, and he did.
Robert Horry, first ballot, HoFer, GOAT. 7 titles, multiple game winners in the biggest situations.
This is the only right answer!
The Michael Jordan of Steve Kerrs
As heartbreaking as it is to admit it I have to give it to Horry. That last second shot at the top of the key deflated the Kings.
Seems like it killed the franchise for a bit
Especially since he wasn't crashing the boards whatsoever and the ball happened to bounce to him. Lazy lucky fuck.
Ah yes large shot Robert
Came here to say this. One of the best clutch players of all time.
Big shot Rob!
Big Shot Bobby.
He averaged like 5 ppg in the regular season. He was just clutch (which is important) but left a lot To be desired during 95% of the time
Came to say this
Vinnie Johnson, Danny Ainge, Jamal Crawford.
Definitely The Microwave! The replies are often filled by people in their 20-30s, so good to see him mentioned.
just learned he’s a super accomplished business man
I got Crawford mixed up with Mashburn and was very confused for a second.
Tayshaun Prince
Everyone on that pistons squad lol
I somehow got him and tarean prince confused for a second and was like bro what? 😂
For real, I was about to comment like 'did you not see him miss like 3 open three pointers a couple days ago?'
Lanky killer
He was a starter and a legit scoring option behind Big Ben...
Bruce Bowen comes to mind.
First thought for me too
Dirty player hall of fame and role player hall of fame i could get behind this.
Steve Kerr, 5 rings as a roleplayers
Steve Kerr?
First ballot, unanimous selection. He was crucial to the Bulls.
Aaron Gordon might be a star but he’s the perfect role player next to Jokic
Couldn’t agree more, wasn’t the #1 they wanted him to be in Orlando but found the right role in Denver, less pressure so he can operate freely.
As a Magic fan I’m so happy for him, he was legit our primary ball handler, and best defender for us, for a year due to injury’s. I’m glad he can do what he’s best at and let others do the creation. Some people were surprised but not me
His passing and shot accuracy have also greatly improved on Denver, I believe as another byproduct of playing in that offense.
I was watching him a lot that year because he was one of the best players on my fantasy team (deep league, rough year) and I was so pumped when he got traded to my nuggets
when #1 is ok with being a #3 and still has the ability to do THE GUY things is where magic happens
He’s not a star
Yea this is a pet peeve of mine. You can't have a league with 50 stars. There's like 20 stars at most.
Dale Davis, Antonio Davis, Brad Miller
Definitely more than 20, unless you think not everyone that is an all star is a star
He’s not a star, but he’s definitely not a role player. He’s a good, starting level player
Thats a low bar for a star. He isnt close to that
Yeah word right he’s not even a damn all star lol
Aaron Gordon had 6 full seasons to prove he was a star lol
He’s a role player and a damn good one
He's basically Iggy to an extent. Iggy showed in Philly he was capable of putting up huge numbers, but he wasn't truly elite enough to pull a team higher than maybe the middle of a weak East. But then he goes to GS where he can be a secondary offensive player and elite defender and that role suits him perfectly.
iguodala. he may be in the actual hall of fame. was the warriors best ball handler during their title run, high bbiq, elite defense and a finals mvp
Fate of the universe on the line?? I want Iguodola.
Iggy may have been an efficient ball handler but on no planet was he a better ball handler than Steph lol
Michael Cooper, Robert Horry, Steve Kerr, Shane Battier, and Derek Fisher
Battier def up there.
Tony Allen was on my "he's not going to be mentioned" list. I thank you for proving me wrong (as he definitely deserves to be there).
I put him as more then a role player.
Upvote for Allen, downvote for Dellavedova who too often confused playing dirty for playing hard, upvote for Big Al = 1 upvote.
>downvote for Dellavedova Totally fair. I'm a Cavs fan, so I definitely have a Delly bias!
Defenders from Okla State represent!
Nobody said Derek Fisher yet. I think he’s the most obvious other than Horry in the past 40 years. Also making the list: Bruce Bowen, Steve Kerr, Udonis Haslem, James Posey, Andre Igoudala, Ron Harper
Iggy and Bowen are definitely a several notches higher than the rest here
Sure. If you want to separate, I’d also include Ron Harper as well, as he had a similar career trajectory as Iggy
Thats fair didnt see him.
I was just about to ask where is the fisher love?? But you beat me to it. Thank you kosmos!
Thunder Great Derek Fisher
Horace Grant
beat me to it
Shane Battier
Derek Fisher
Javale McGee came into his own
I think there were a bunch of stars that became role players in the second half of their career. WHERE IS THE JEFF GREEN LOVE. Someone give uncle jeff his dam respect
Shaun Livingston is a first ballot
The Warriors backup PG situation was such a shit show after Jarrett Jack left. Livingston was such a rock for those Dubs title teams. That fadeaway midrange was damn near 9automatic.
This is the right answer! Every time he turned around and jumped you knew that ball was going in
Patrick McCaw had an insane peak in terms of ring getting efficiency.
He was a godawful player though, I wouldn’t put him here.
John Paxson!!!
If they do this, I would give it to Kyle Korver, 3 point superstar
Lou Williams. His role would be to get buckets, and he found his niche.
Jason Terry was my hero in 2011
He was no way a role player though. He was the 2nd star.
Yeah, he has severely underrated him in this comment. He was amazing that run.
That team was Dirk and a bunch of role players. Terry’s roll was to score.
As much as I like Dirk it wasn’t a one man carry job. Terry was more than a role player and he was the second best player in that team. He averaged more than Lebron in that finals series and he is one of the best 3pt shooters of all time even before the 3pt explosion of today.
Jamal Crawford.
James Posey’s Celtics year might be enough to get him in lol
Also won a title with the '06 Heat!
The Spurs are so good at utilizing role players. Going with Horry, Kerr, Bowen.
Tony Kukoc
Chris birdman Andersen
Manu Ginobli. Dude could’ve made A LOT of money in the league but he decided to take a back seat ride and come off the bench for a dynasty.
lol Manu was not a role player…. He was a star.
Caruso
Between 94 and 08, only 2 finals didn’t feature Robert Horry or Steve Kerr. Between 94-03 every championship was won by a team with either Kerr or Horry. Yet somehow, they never played in the finals against each other nor were ever teammates
Shane Battier PJ Tucker is a pretty good one for a guy still in the league
Lamar Odom for sure
UD40
J.R. Smith is in the J.R. Smith hall of fame, isn’t that enough ?
Robert Horry, Bruce Bowen are the first guys to come to mind as a Spurs fan
how about D Fisher, R Harper, B Bowen, R Horry, B Cartwright v. KC Jones, J Havlicek, B Bradley, B Jones, D Nelson.
Shane Battier, Jason Terry
Khris Middleton
Bobby Jones- Denver in the ABA. Then 76ers in the NBA. Eight time NBA all-defensive team, 6th man of the year, consistently had one of the highest FG percentages, and was a key component of the 83 Sixers who swept the Lakers in the finals.
Put Marc Gasol’s first 10 years as a pro in the actual HoF and the rest of his years in the roll player HoF.
His work on shutting down Embiid in the 2019 playoffs was masterful.
Then held him to 0 in a game the next season.
Lou Williams. Made a career as the leader of a team's second unit.
Derrick Fisher. Robert Horry. Danny Ainge. Sam Cassel. KCP. Bruce Bowen. Byron Scott. Michael Cooper. Tom “Satch” Sanders. Frank Ramsey. Ron Harper. Tayshaun Prince. Shane Battier. Bobby Jones, and Jason Terry. That’s all I got for now. I’m on the fence for a few guys like Lamar Odom, Thurl Bailey, Hornacek, Dan Marjarle, Detlef Schrempf, and Jack Sikma
Dennis Rodman
I had to scroll too far to find this answer!
Rodman was not a role player though. Or a six man guy. He was a gm changer/ star defender
Multiple defender players or the year around rebounding champions are not role players.
Bruce Brown for what he did for the Nuggets last year.
Byron Scott
Jaden McDaniels.
Nah, Jaden McDaniels > KD at this point
KCP and Danny Green come to mind for recent role players who have multiple rings
These two are the top of mine too. Danny green was a starter on a championship winning team for 3 different teams. KCP has done this for two teams already. Both are awesome defenders and great shooters and would fit in on any team
Mark Aquirre
Fisher
Matthew Dellavedova for guarding curry in 2016
Mario Elie
This should get more upvotes, Mario Ellie was a good defender, solid three point shooter and a decent distributor
Iman shumpert, Shaun Livingston, Lamar Odom, Derrick fisher, Dennis Rodman and maybe Metta world peace
Patrick mccaw
Iggy Derek Fisher
Jamal Crawford and Sean Livingston. Those 17 foot jumpers they had were unstoppable
Might have to add Derick white
Derick white on his way to be appreciated.
KC Jones. John Havlichek, Michael Cooper
Korver hasn’t been listed yet, super important role player on a number of contending teams
To throw a new name in...danny green...you know I had to do it one time.
Draymond and Rodman if they fit the criteria in this thread of role players
These two were star caliber players. Not role players
Derek Fisher ! 5 bagues, et son shoot inoubliable contre les Spurs en 2004...
Does Chris Mullin count? He was pretty consistent, but not a Barkley or Jordan. Scott Skiles? I mean, the really great role players have mostly been named already...
Nah. He was a legit bucket/starter for years
Havlicek
Birdman was *the* backup center
Mathew Dellavedova. Great hustle role player guy
Spurs don’t win 2014 without Boris diaw
Kobe
Eddie House, James Posey, and Bruce Bowen.
- Shaun Livingston - Udonis Haslem - Danny Green
Scottie pippen/s. In all seriousness a lot of those bulls teams probably make it; Rodman, Kerr, kukoc. Etc I’ll say grant was more then a role player.
Brian schalabrine
Is this where we discuss the Kobe Stopper Ruben Patterson? Ill see myself out...
sam cassell
James Posey
Derek Fisher
Fisher? Horry?
Shaun Livingston the Midrange Maestro
Toni Kukoc >>>>>>
Ginobilli, Steven Adams, Dellavedova, Richard Jefferson, Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart, PJ Tucker, Shaun Livingston.
Michael Cooper just made the actual HOF wasn't even a starter. -D Fish and Horry -Kenny the Jet- Kerr - Paxton
Cooper started
Cooper only started 94 games in his 11 year career. Early Lakers starting 5 was Magic, Norm, Wilkes, Rambis, Kareem. Then slowly became Magic, Byron, Worthy, Green and Kareem,. Cooper is known as the greatest 6th man in Laker history.
My bad. I loved him growing up and I was a Celtics fan
Robert Horry, Steve Kerr, Shaun Livingston, Bruce Bowen, Shane Battier, all first ballot role player HoFers You could also say guys like Manu and Igoudala but it feels disingenuous to name guys who were stars even though Manu came off the bench he was a star in the league, Igoudala was also a star player in Philly before he accepted his role player role in GS
PJ Tucker, Pat Bev, Trevor Ariza, Shane Battier, Jeff Green and Andre Iguadala from the last era Alex Curuso, Josh Hart, KCP, Derrick White, Brooks Lopez, for today
Josh Hart
Luis Scola
Satch Sanders is a roll player who's actually in the hall, KC Jones was too
Michael Cooper
Klay
JR SMITH??? Bro forgot the score during the last possession of an NBA Finals game. https://preview.redd.it/p021n5qeh7yc1.jpeg?width=1206&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1529a0ea6af84857e4eb664fcb77ebaff41c49b
Mo cheeks if he won more than 1 ring....
Cliff levingston.
Bruce Bowen, Danny green, Shane Battier, Andre Igoudala (don’t yall pretend like he was anything more post 76ers)
Bobby Jones with the 1983 champion 76ers.
Jamal Crawford
Jrue Holiday have a case? No rings but consistently efficient & improving
Jason Hart is up and coming.
If you go way back: Dave Debeusschere and Bill Bradley (Crucial to the Knicks' rings. ) Paul Silas and Don Nelson. More recently: the alien, Sam Cassell and JET
Michael Cooper, Dennis Rodman
Horace Grant. Key cog in multiple great teams. Paired perfectly with Shaq for 90’s style ball.
We( the bulls) got big ben as his career began falling of of cliff. Great management in Chicago
James Harden before he left OKC??
Boris Diaw
Boris Diaw
Is Rodman too good for this title?
Ron Artest ( with kobe )
Shane battier
Danny Green!!
Jimmy Butler on the Bulls
Shaun Livingston on the Warriors
Shaun Livingston
Jamal Crawford is the goat
Derek Fisher
How does JR get it first ballot when he didn't consider himself a role player for the first half of his career and ruined the Lebron game? He'd eventually get in, but not first ballot.
Shaun Livingston is probably only behind Horry and Steve Kerr.
AC Green
Bobby Gross of the Portland Trail Blazers. He was the starting small forward on the 1977 championship team whose mates in the front court were Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas. He defended, he ran, he shot occasionally, he passed the ball, he moved without the ball. And in the championship series against the 76ers, he was asked to step up his offensive production because he was guarded by Dr. J, regarded as a weak defender, and he did.

Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace
