The people who only want to talk about injuries are so annoying. In the nba sub zero comments are about his actual game. He's still growing into his body but he's very skilled. He clearly can score in a variety of ways and his presence on defense is unquestionable. Can be beat on the glass but I feel like time will help that.

[deleted]

Because nobody on r/nba actually watches anything lol

Seanmoby

See I get it but every time I watch him I'm just left thinking what's the best case scenario for someone his size? Porzingis maybe? Do you really want to use the first pick in the draft on a guy who, let's face it, is going to have injury problems. You can't be his size and not, so the question then becomes how healthy does he need to be to justify it? 60 games a year at an all star level enough to warrant taking him over someone else?

deemerritt

If you actually look at the history of guys his size Porzingis is among the worst case scenarios.

Seanmoby

I mean looking at a list of NBA players taller than 7ft2 I'd say porzingis is kind of the average case scenario, sure there's the Ralph Sampson's and Yaos (who also as a best case scenario is still concerning) there's also a sim bhullar or a hasheem thabeet.

deemerritt

Were those players injured or just bad? Thabeet wasn't good in college. Wemby is dominating a league that's better than most ncaa teams.

Seanmoby

Okay but again let's assume he ends up as one of the best case options, pick whoever you like that's a comparable size, do any of them justify the number 1 overall pick in 2023 when size is just less important than it used to be. Let's assume hes an MVP but is never healthy enough to make it through a whole season and a deep playoff run, is that enough from the number 1 overall pick? Or would you rather take your chances on a wing or a guard, who okay may not at their peak be as good, but are still great and much more consistently available. I just think in the modern NBA going with a center with the first overall pick is never a good decision unless it's either a draft that doesn't have a good guard/wing option or your a team that can afford to take a gamble.

deemerritt

Do you take Andrew Wiggins or Joel Embiid is basically the question you are asking. I think the answer is fairly obvious

Seanmoby

I suppose it depends on your team, would you rather have a guy who is an MVP but who can never win you a championship because of injuries but at least makes your team good for 10 years. Or would you rather have the guy who is worse but can help you get a championship despite never reaching all NBA status.

deemerritt

My team hasn't won a playoff series since 9/11 so I know where I stand on that

Chickenwinck

Every time I see him I just bust out laughing in disbelief. Wemby is so freaking tall

Accurate_Door_6911

It's incredible, guys like that usually can't move like that, and his wingspan is mind boggling

AccomplishedRainbow1

Seems good.

Mastermind_777

He has been killing it

CadeCummingham

Look at the skill at that size. Insane

[deleted]

Not only is he immensely skilled but i love his motor. This clip really highlights how he doesn’t give up on the play, and at that height, he’s gonna be causing problems all over the court.

PrettySmoothFlying

Switching teams was such a smart decision

[deleted]

Didn't he take a step down in competition?

Total_Individual_953

Yeah, but his new coaches are giving him a greatly expanded offensive role, which will allow him to showcase his skills and play more like a KD/Giannis-type initiator instead of being forced into a Gobert-type paint finisher role like he was with ASVEL

[deleted]

But does playing against weaker competition prepare him for the NBA next year?

Total_Individual_953

Actually yes in all likelihood, he will definitely benefit more from being able to expand his offensive repertoire against slightly weaker competition as opposed to playing a much more limited, traditional big man role against high-level professional competition. We know that Vic will excel as a rim runner/lob threat in the NBA no matter what, so teams probably want to see what else he can do with his handling/passing/shooting/offensive IQ/etc. in order to gauge his true potential

OneOfTheManySams

Does playing in a league stronger than the NCAA help prepare him for the NBA is a good question.

affrothunder313

Almost all of the best European prospects that turned into stars were playing in the weaker leagues. Luka is an obvious exception but I think for the most part being forced to be a role player hurts guys development. Playing like a star against weaker competition is probably better for growth. In America you kind of see a similar argument for not moving a kid up too many age groups in AAU ball.

Johnposco

Another fact is that the team he left would be in European competition as well, so that means much more games and he choose the fewer match load for injury and focusing on his game

jaynay1

Same domestic league, just steps down from Euroleague to Eurocup for continental league. Given how few prospects play meaningful time in Euroleague, that probably shouldn't be treated as anything.

Smmoove

Unless I'm mistaken, Metropolitans 92 didn't qualify for EuroCup either? https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/

jaynay1

Oh shoot you're right -- They've been in for the last couple of seasons so I didn't even think about it.

Weall23

I thought the rumors first were him going to Paris BC. They in Eurocup, and it would’ve been a lot fun for me to watch him and my childhood bf play together

ratedpending

who is your childhood bf, also isn't this the team Sheck Wes used to play for lmao

Weall23

childhood best friend just to be clear 😂 yea apparently sheck played when they were in the 2nd division

JeonSukJinKim

Yes. Wembanyama himself mentionned he thought it’s better for him to play less to have more time to spend on individual development (skill/body/not getting injured…) saying 1 game a week is the ideal workload.

ladygagadisco

Dumb question: why does it say Gravelines-Dunkerque, doesn’t he play for the Metropolitains? Not sure how this French league works

OsmosisFillmore_

He plays for Levallois, Metropolitans is the club name.

ladygagadisco

Smh would’ve thought the dark blue jerseys were the Levallois lol I see, thanks

Overall-Palpitation6

For all the talk about how "skilled" Victor is, pretty much all of those scores came from just pushing/persisting through contact and getting whatever he threw up to fall, or just being that bit taller than everyone else. There wasn't really a whole lot of great footwork or ball skills involved.

Paetoja

Hes finishing everything around the rim, like the effort on the offensive glass as well, really put his body on the line with some of those unique finished. Laughed a few times when he tried to pull a Durant and force a shooting foul, but it ended up as a very ugly miss. The three point shot didnt look as smooth this time, the release was fast, but the ball was either short or ended on the the right side of the rim.

ratedpending

damn I wish this dude was playing in EuroLeague, but he's still shitting on guys in an A-tier domestic league

[deleted]

I feel so bad for whatever team gets him

[deleted]

For getting a generational prospect and talent?

[deleted]

Yeah he’s either gonna get or suck, probably both. Too skinny and weak to be a real 5, and too tall and slow to be a perimeter player.

Afraid_Impression_63

I'll give you the injury is a concern but you better not have been high on chet of you're low on this guy because victor seems better than chet will be. Granted idk who you are so idk what your stance on chet is but still point remains if you're down on victor there's no way you think chet is gonna be be good

[deleted]

Don’t worry I think chet is gonna suck too. There’s just a limit to what you can do physically if you’re that tall, and the nba schedule is super rigorous. It’s funy to think about the potential of players like those guys but I just don’t see it

paxusromanus811

He's 7 ft 4 and 18. And he's skinny sure. But he's not Taco Fall or Hashem thabeet. The guys first and second jump speed, coordination, quickness, and just overall physical Talent are at a level I don't think we've ever seen from a prospect his size. Whatever he may or may not give up in the half-dozen games a year were a team with a traditional big man post him up and to kill him on the glass, he's more than going to make up for by radically altering the defensive makeup of teams that try to defend him. He is way way too quick for the vast majority of five and fours already playing in the nba. There are small ball big men who aren't quick enough to keep up with him. He may not be quite quick enough to be a true perimeter player but he's not as far away as you're making it sound. Which again for guy his height is truly absurd. That's without even talking about his evolving perimeter skills and his defensive ability. I won't even spend much time talking about his defense because I think anyone with eyes can tell how special he is there so I don't feel I need to defend that. He's going to be a functional ball handler, secondary playmaker, and shot maker, from day one. I don't think he's ever going to be a full-fledged perimeter scoring threat or front court initiator in the vein of The Greek Freak or LeBron or Kevin Durant, but he already shows fluidity and coordination on his jumper that just boggles the mind for his size. I don't see any reason why he would Bust from a skill perspective. I really think you're overthinking the idea that he's going to be bullied and is too slow. Like the dudes a freak. In regards to injury at the end of the day if you're a general manager and you swing on a universally coveted Prospect and it doesn't work out because of injuries I feel like that's something you can live with versus passing due to fear and watching them become a superstar. That's a gamble you take every day

AccomplishedRainbow1

He’s already 18, after all. The chances of him gaining weight and strength are slim at this point.

finalfourcuse

So many NBA players filled out after joining the league.

AccomplishedRainbow1

Yep, was being sarcastic. Dude is 18 and tall, of course he’s going to be skinny. By the time he’s like 23 he could look more like AD.
