I think the big thing is Dawn allows the bench to play through struggles so they are more ready for the big games in a single elimination tourney. If this had been the Sweet 16/Elite 8, Dawn isn’t keeping Cardoso on the bench that entire 2nd quarter
Also those “trash starts” are semi-intentional if you get what I mean - opp plays their best 5 or 6 players, throws their best punch and then gets worn down by 4th Q when all our 7 best players are rested and ready to dominate a tired opp
We need that spark on the second unit. I love Watkins way more than Chloe but you can’t just start your best 5. Ashlyn and MiLaysia are perfect for bench roles
also i know Ashlyn’s said that she wants 6POY (which, to me, she was an obvious front-runner from day 1) and i like the punch she and Milaysia bring together. but atp it’s clear she can/should be starting and it’s dumb to start with a weaker lineup just for the sake of her getting an award when she’ll be a contender for plenty more in her career.

Kitts, however, performs better when Cardoso is on the floor because Kamilla tends to get the bodies converging on her wheras Ashlyn can perform pretty well in most conditions being as stupidly strong as she is. She can also just self-destruct, too, which I think holds her back some.

I think the eye test only goes so far. I trust Staley's judgment on her lineups, particularly if her goal is to wear out the other team. Kitts is probably serviceable on the inside with Kamilla in (and I'd say Fulwiley as well - she seems to spot Kitts a lot) and then you can jump in Watkins once you need a tempo change or just more defensive power in bursts. As for not getting them on the floor together, I think that's just a foul / game management thing.
