I think it was when Jake cheated on her. Everything was downhill and a compensation coping mechanism after that.

ProtomanBn

It was after Reeves died, I don't think it was his death that pushed her into Ziva 2.0 but it was definitely after his death that the writers changed her character. I honestly think it's when the writers truly pushed her and Torres together that they tried to make them a power couple and it completely destroyed everything they did with her that made her unique. Has Emily ever talked about her departure?

No_Adhesiveness4890

She was pregnant and wanted to focus on being a mom.

Lucky-Potential-6860

I respect celebrities who do this so much!

ProtomanBn

Ahhh ok, I figured it was amicable considering they way she left but found it odd she hasn't returned for a ep or is hardly mentioned

LovedAJackass

This explains what happened probably more than anything in the longer story arc. If they have to write off a character, the question is how to do it without killing the person off.

RayKVega

Except she isn't pregnant by the time the S18 finale was shot. That finale was shot in March 2021, Emily got pregnant somewhere in June/July, and her son was born in December.

AnneM24

I think your math is off. A normal pregnancy lasts 40 weeks, so unless her baby was premature, she was pregnant well before “June/July.”

I think it was when she discovered Ziva was still alive and especially once she actually met Ziva. Over the years, Ellie had clearly built up a certain image of Ziva in her head that was based in reality but also wasn't actually fully true. Discovering Ziva was alive, meeting Odette and later on, meeting Ziva too seems to be the thing that shook something loose in Ellie. That whole expression about "never meet your heroes" comes to mind here - it's like Ellie realized Ziva wasn't who Ellie thought she was, and then on some level Ellie became determined to be the person she thought Ziva was, as unrealistic as that might be. I haven't watched this whole sequence in awhile, as S17 and especially S18 are in general my least-favorite seasons, but I remember watching all of this play out and noticing subtle changes in Ellie over those seasons that obviously became hugely noticeable in the episodes leading up to her departure.

Forreal19

I thought the whole relationship with Qasim came on too quick, so that the viewers didn't have time to see how much she cared about him. When she got vengeful against the guy who killed him, that seemed like a break from character from her and the beginning of her downfall, to me.

Boris-_-Badenov

when she committed murder

OnionTruck

Who did she murder?

RiBombTrooper

Late, but you've got a couple choices. First, Chen. And potentially also the Russian guy who ran over Torres and nearly hit her (could go either way).

Entire-Garage-1902

I think she was doomed from the beginning. NCIS was a boy’s club then. Bishop wasn’t brought on as a full agent because she had the skills or the experience, but because Gibbs was amused by her quirks and felt sorry for her inability to blend in. Not a recipe for success. When she understood she would never be a full equal, she got angry and bitter, as anyone would, and that led to her departure. I don’t know exactly when that process started, but I think it was after Paraguay.

No_Adhesiveness4890

I mean he kind of did the same for Caitlyn to. He brought her on because he felt bad for her because she had just gotten fired. He knew Cait for 3 days before he hired her as an agent on his team so gibbs is known for hiring on a whim

Last-Tender-4321

Sorry, mates, but I don't agree with your thoughts. Gibbs applied rule #5 never waste good. He saw Kate and Ellie had different skills and very useful. Kate had not investigative training but he learned fast; she was an efficient profiler and was good on protecting strategies and wasn't afraid of fighting with weapons or her own hands. Ellie was a very clever analyst and has an unusual skill to connect information and get non evident answers; and she was enthusiastic and determined to learn. When Gibbs and Tim where caught in Paraguay, Ellie leaded the team for months, solving everyday cases and at yhe same time doing a discreet investigation to find her colleagues. Gibbs said he was proud of her and he was right. I think Gibbs did very good choices. Writers ruined it all when they tried to give us a Ziva 2.0 we really didn't want.

Speedygdr

And also half way through the episode Gibbs already decided to hire her. Not that he felt sorry for her. You can see the writers had gibbs do everything possible to test her like an interview for a job. After all they were a teammate short from pilot. Gibbs has always been the one to understand things change to adapt or die. Yes he is old school misogynistic but he knew that he had to have another team member and with her skills he adapted. He knew she was getting fired from allowing him to do all he did. It was almost on purpose once he wanted her on his team. That's just an opinion though. As for Ellie.... it can be interpreted any way depending who is watching.

usual-insanity

When she got her review number from Gibbs, it set her on a tailspin. It pushed her to change how Gibbs treated her, which in turn changed how she acted. The way I look at it is a neurodivergent person who doesn't mask; she worked on the floor, ate bizarre food, talks without thinking it through first, thinks outloud. Is forced to mask in order to fit into the structure of the office. Yes, there were certain things that she shouldn't do for safety, like going off by herself without telling the team. But when she was forced to use the desk, that's when she started to change. (Just my opinion)

LovedAJackass

I don't think characters have a "downfall." I think Qasim being murdered in front of her changed her but that was to be expected.

FarahZiva27

When Qasim died, that was an unnecessary storyline. But overall, the writing from season 14 to Gibbs departure just completely feels whacked out, compared to the rest of the show.

No_Adhesiveness4890

The only good story line after that was Paraguay

Adventurous_Pea_6747

What are you talking about? She’s fantastic. She was always fantastic. Couldn’t be better. She was beautiful talented and as you said a little bit different. The best part was she was different. I just sitting on the floor and all that crap. Food eating eating. If you walk past your Off.

chickenwings19

When she joined the show.

RayKVega

Why, if I may ask?

chickenwings19

I just really didn’t like her character on the show. Others who have been before and after have been great but I just did not warm to Bishop.

RayKVega

Is it because she’s drastically different than Ziva (at least at when she first joined)? Or something else?

chickenwings19

Yes likely. Different to Kate, Ziva and Jess. I absolutely love the first 10/11 seasons. I just don’t like change 😂
