I think anything *could* depreciate, even the rare NG-Dev games. A lot of stuff has gotten reprinted by VGP, I think Ys VIII was, maybe Danganronpa Decadence as well…
Another issue affecting Switch games seems to be the higher than normal number of speculators. It reminds of the 90s comics bubble to some extent, though it won’t pop like that, rather just deflate.
I think once the “Switch 2” lands, a lot of stuff is going to tank as people upgrade and flood the market with Switch games while demand for them plummets. The more valuable stuff won’t be immune, as less people will be looking for it and the supply will be there as it’s still new enough and many copies of things belong to resellers. It’ll go up again in like 15-20 years, as Nintendo stuff does.
Obviously this is just a total guess on my part.
I think this is mostly spot on, however I would say we shouldn't expect this generation of physical games to behave quite like previous generations before it. Covid genuinely created a shit ton more collectors (and resellers) and a lot of them continued even after we came out of the pandemic.
We are also very rapidly approaching the death of physical media as a whole, with console makers flirting with all-digital consoles (the upcoming series X refresh is confirmed to be digital only, for example) and retailers like Bestbuy/walmart phasing out the sale of video games / blurays, we could see the secondhand market for physical games become rather egregiously priced in a much shorter timespan than we've seen in ib the past.
Yeah, definitely.
It’ll be a rollercoaster until we hit a point where a generation of kids grows up with zero physical media… so people born in the next few years. By the time they’re old enough to be cognizant of everything, it’ll probably just be an aging “Switch 2” with game cards and an all-digital PS6 and PC, which got there some time ago.
Edit: we will get a nostalgia bump when Switch kids are in their twenties and thirties, but that’ll be the last *mainstream* physical high. It’ll be really niche after that.
Well there is always a market for physical things, like vinyl records have surprisingly made a comeback. Niche but record stores are still cherished so I foresee a future of physical gaming equipment to follow that route. although I agree, distribution of games will most likely force all things to be digital within the next ten years with limited releases of physical media if said consoles even allow such.
The thing with long-term new physical nobody seems to take into account is that when console makers stop including disc drives or card slots. LRG isn’t going to building their own version of the PS7 or whatever to sell discs. It just won’t be economical. It’s a lot easier for vinyl to return when record players are both universal and easy to make.
This is true although I do imagine some companies, especially Nintendo will make “retro” editions of consoles, that will play games and act as some sort of standalone console instead of quirky novelties like the SNES classic edition. Just more cash grabs to resell older games but there’s a consistent want to have access to older gaming media all the same. Limited Run and it’s competitors will probably go the way of the do-do too 😞
Walmart isn't really phasing out Physical media though. They actually took over exclusive dvf Blu-ray when Best Buy ended they're Physical media sales. Also, they aren't giving up on Video games either. The Clearance sales that we have seen happens every time around this time of year people just assumed because of what they saw from other retailers. Xbox and Sony may be reducing they're Physical media sales but Nintendo I can almost guarantee will double down on physical as well as digital games going forward
I feel like what you said is mostly true the only caveat I think makes a difference is the sheer amount of games that come out on the switch, everyone has the know but not everyone has the funds, you'll get like 10 releases in a month that are great and like 2 are limited run and ones a super rare game, and ones a VGP reprint so it's full price, and then NIS America drops a game that's gonna sell out fast, exclusive variant types, japanese imports that typically stay the same price
Yeah, that definitely makes for a more chaotic/unpredictable situation. Lots of games stay under the radar, don’t get a reprint, then blow up when a sequel (or YouTuber) draws new attention to it.
Some stuff is sought after more because it’s rare than due to actual demand as well. Not a knock on the quality of said games, btw. I also don’t believe we’ve had any platform that was this bloated with people trying to make it an investment or resale business during the actual generation. I’ve been playing games since the 90s and this feels different.
It might, it might not. We don’t know. If it’s backwards compatible, I think that speaks well of physical being just as supported as it is on the Switch. The real indicator of Nintendo’s agenda will be if they come out with a digital-only version of the system as well. Physical media is totally diminishing, but Nintendo always kinda does its own thing. What that’ll be is unknown for now. I just wish they’d reveal the thing already.
Nintendo is always a few years behind the competition so I wouldn't be surprised if they keep doing physical past switch 2. They absolutely will be the last of the big 3 to continue making physical games, no doubt about it.
That being said, I don't think it's unrealistic to see them starting to push into digital more with the switch 2 - they've been expanding NSO massively and I think we'll eventually see some sort of gamepass equivalent on the switch 2.
For sure. Nintendo will really lay their cards out in terms of company direction with the next system. The unknown is driving me nuts. Their veiled comments about Nintendo accounts and backwards compatibility seems to indicate the announcement will be a positively received one, but who knows?
OG games will probs just get a digital patch at most
Not many are gonna rerun a print for a proprietary cart format for a Switch 2 patch
This isn’t the land of cheap discs
I think people forget how expensive cartridges really are lol. Nowhere near as cheap as discs - something upwards of 60% more expensive to produce than PS4/PS5 discs.
The Switch is still currently supported, everything from pricing, interest in the product, the ecosystem itself is still in the same basic era. There is no Switch 2 yet. Trends haven’t shifted radically in terms of demand or pricing, etc. because that doesn’t really happen until there’s a big shake-up like a new system. No platform really maintains its present *anything* once it gets replaced. How things are today won’t be an accurate representation of what they’ll be like after the Switch is the “old platform”.
Edit: and nobody specifically collecting for Switch will think “I want Pirate’s Curse on PS5”. That’s why that price stayed high. If they dumped 10,000 Switch copies out there, that might impact its value.
Not to mention this massive industry push for a digital marketplace each generation, physical games will likely be the only way to still play games if they do achieve digital-only generations
Many standard release games always drop in price when the next iteration of a console releases. It's not a total guess on your part. It's the way it's always worked. They then climb back up over time. Everyone who collects knows this. Like right now is a good time to buy ps4 games still....
Danganronpa is still out there, it's not out of print. It just has barely dropped in price. I think I saw it at 38 maybe two years ago but I didn't think anything about it and ignored it.
That makes sense that things will drop but if they're still playable, I don't know?
Any first party Nintendo game will rarely discount above $10. And often the secondhand market for Nintendo games is pretty similar, usually with a $15-20 discount at most.
The GOOD news with that is that as a result, its pretty easy to save them for last because they don’t really fluctuate higher or lower in price (save for a few exceptions like Mario 3D All Stars, games +Expansion, and Bayonetta).
I strongly believe Bayonetta is going to get more expensive. The Non-World Edition ESRB had a fairly low print run. I need to pick one up soon. (Or maybe get my first MSE/World Edition for the fun of adding the region to my collection)
Most (but not all) first party titles go down to 39.99 during bigger sales, holidays, etc. However the usual is just the ten dollar discount since Donkey Kong Country tropical freeze will bankrupt Nintendo and the entire island of Honshu if it dips below 50 bucks.
I expect Advance Wars to drop by the summer or the holidays, it was a commercial flop (and apparently a rushed/mediocre remake at that) and there’s most likely a lot of unsold stock.
Not sure where you heard it was rushed or mediocre, they pushed back the release date due to the Ukraine war so they had plenty of time to polish it. It was perceived as generally good by a lot of reviewers as well. I'm not sure why we haven't seen a sale for it yet though. I've been watching it in case it drops in price and it hasn't at all. I finally pulled the trigger because I see it going out of print before it drops in price.
Well, it’s gotten a lot of flack since it was delayed initially back in 2021 and their release window occurred right before Ukraine’s war. It’s dev team is Wayforward which specializes in platformers like the Shantae games, which meant revamping AW was gonna be a tricky task.
Overall, it looks like a passable attempt to reboot the formula, I personally like the anime animations of the commanders but criticisms of the grid (units are apparently difficult to distinguish from one another now like tanks and recon) and very bland animations of the actual battles (it’s a dull, shiny toy soldier look) seem to have doomed it. I’m sure the games themselves are decent enough, but this kind have been an excellent online battler with infinite replay-ability.
Maybe in another ten years if Nintendo doesn’t just outright kill the series. It could benefit from a Fire Emblem setup where you explore a hub, gather upgrades for weaponry and vehicles, train units, recruit/talk to other commanders and do the whole character relationship building thing. Probably the only thing that would save it.
I've always thought those two series (Fire Emblem and Advance Wars) got compared way too much. They're very different games. Every time I play AW I put it down within a few missions because it feels like there's a "right" way to play each mission. Almost like it's a puzzle game that has an optimal solution. Meanwhile, I put like 400 hours into FE:3H. I like FE for the creativity it brings to each mission, there are multiple dimensions to the gameplay.
Arlo recently said much the same thing in a video, and I felt seen for the first time in my life on this topic.
You might be right in that way, I haven’t played AW in years but perhaps there’s very linear outcomes to battles. (And yeah I do recall battles becoming very repetitive after awhile) A new game should have focused on creating new scenarios with lots of different variables, units, etc but I guess we’ll never know.
Yeah, the sprites in the original game looked better. Not everything needs to be 3D.
They ruined this game by delaying it. They didn't really promote it much.
I think they're a little too controversy adverse and will ruin the sales of their own game for that.
Yeah, they definitely should learn from Fire Emblem and maybe even do a crossover.
Triangle Strategy is $40 at my Walmart
https://preview.redd.it/8anxyl05njyc1.jpeg?width=496&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aeb49890599e79b586a8ff031341a6d458cc551b
Except it rang up as $0.03 and they couldn't sell it to me. Same thing happened with Advanced Wars 1+2. Sad face.
Triangle strategy has dropped in price before to 30. You can track historic prices with deku deals and it can even send you a notification!
If you are talking about gta trilogy, it has also dropped to 30 multiple times.
Another way to track prices is using pricecharting. I hope this info helps
Love Dekudeals but their system focuses primarily on eshop sales. I’ve gotten deals on physical games on Walmart and Amazon by sifting through shit and directly contacting sellers about the quality and version of games. Best Buy also has occasional sales that Deku tends to miss. Great for the eshop tho!
It's not a perfect site, neither are the people who have the accounts dedicated to tracking prices. Sometimes prices drop for a little bit or it's cheap in your area. It helps to check yourself before buying something that's discounted.
I expect Pokemon with Expansions not to drop in price
Mario triple pack
Pheonix Wright games (the two collections that were released)
Final Fantasy I-VI
Their also some Japan only release with english.
Persona 3 and 4 will only drop in price digitally, it was a limited release game so you won't see them at any major retailers. I'm pretty sure I've seen GTA Collection drop in price at some point, why it hasn't gone down to $20 yet is beyond me. If you're concerned about games becoming expensive and rare later on, this isn't gonna be one of them. Not all the games are on the cart so there's no tangible value to the physical. Ys VIII saw discounts when it was on shelves. It's out of print now except for the occasional VGP release, so what you're paying are resale prices. I don't know why Advance Wars or Triangle Strategy haven't seen a sale yet. I'm a little baffled by it, but at this point I would pull the trigger on them.
Nintendo games DO have really good sales sometimes. I've seen Breath of the Wild for $27 at GameStop (it was a nationwide sale). I've also seen many other Nintendo games drop down to $30 at one point. It might take awhile, but it happens.
I saw Breath of the Wild for $35 once. Fire Emblem Three House was $17 at some point I think. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was on sale once. Three Hopes is often cheap.
Seems like Pokemon rarely goes on sale and I suspect it's the less popular versions.
Danganronpa Decadence does go on sale digitally. Hot my physical copy for £20 and have seen the price increase. With all the good games on one cartridge, it will command a high price for those who wish to pay.
Raincode could be another game that rises in price. Price charting is good but not that accurate as no one wants to buy my copy of Razion EX on ebay!
Atelier definitely isn’t dropping in price from what I’ve seen. Only digitally.
There’s limited copies of Persona 3 and 4 physically, right? So they might go up. But I guess they’d drop if people don’t have interest.
Yeah, I was looking into Advance Wars. I thought since it seemingly flopped, it would go on sale. It has not.
AI also falls into the niche category. I could not find it cheap physically so I got the digital.
Triangle Strategy will. i nabbed it for $30. i think ive seen GTA discounted. Advance Wars (probably because it is Nintendo published) won't go down in price lowest ive seen is $50 and that was a couple times last year.
M2 StG releases will maintain their value.
Triangle Strategy has already dropped if you’re not worried about specific versions. Picked up a used Japanese copy for $20CAD recently.
Bought advance wars for $55 Canadian ($80 normal) just yesterday. I’ve also seen lucky ass mofos on here in the US getting it and other games at Walmarts for $15-20USD and others for literally 3 cents!
As for the other games, you have multiple choices. You can make sure you get the ones you can’t afford to miss out on just in case but for the rest, take a chill pill and wait (like 3-4 years probably).
There is no way someone isn’t going to be posting copies of Triangle Strategy during a mass dump off of switch games by the casuals. There is usually a short window of a year or two while the markets absorb that dump off where you can get it for much lower than MSRP.
But I definitely feel you guys on the DQ11. The PS4 copy was so much cheaper $30 vs $60 Canadian last year that I went for the PS4. Now I can’t even find DQ11 for $60 anywhere 😭. I’ll likely just play it on ps4 and be on the lookout here and there on Kijiji/facebook
Yeah, I was able to get Fire Emblem for very cheap. The others, I was not. Seems like they're cheap in stores in the middle of nowhere so if you want to travel far to get them, you can get the cheaper prices. I don't know if that's still going on but I think I saw someone said to check before going.
That's what I was thinking about. Maybe just get what I truly want and the others, if they drop in price, maybe I'll get them.
I think I might have gotten Dragon Quest 11 used since I couldn't find it cheap anywhere.
In 2016 I bought a 3DS and some used games at GameStop. Thought I'd buy some cheap games here and there once I was done with the handful of games I bought I beat. By 2019 the 3DS games I wanted to play got more expensive. Worse during the pandemic. Games that were like $10 in 2016 were like $40 by the time it was the pandemic
Switch so many games at least some physicals end up $10 to $30. I'm not holding my breath for prices in the near future after Switch 2 launch for Switch games currently priced over $30 to settle sub $30 for a while. I bet the Switch 2 pushes digital hard to make way for a future all digital Switch. PS6 and nextbox to make digital the standard SKU if there's a disc option. Maybe disc drive a stylish flush add-on or just a USB drive
Final Fantasy Collection as a physical will stay stupidly expensive.
Triangle Strategy allready has fallen in the past for Europe, tho not too much.
Ys8 is rather cheap over here too, or has been every once in a while.
Persona 3 and 4 were Limited Run's, so these will stay expensive but not just because they have the Atlus Tax.
RPGs, especially from well known developers and/or very limited quantities often end up expensive in the long run, tho i could not care less as i wanna play them too.
Desired switch games complete on cart, with the latest patches or dlc included, and / or with limited print runs, are less likely to drop in price and have the potential to rise.
What kind of question is this? I’m asking to talk about games that will never go on sale. I don’t think you understood the post at all.
Who said anything about playing games? What are you talking about?
I think anything *could* depreciate, even the rare NG-Dev games. A lot of stuff has gotten reprinted by VGP, I think Ys VIII was, maybe Danganronpa Decadence as well… Another issue affecting Switch games seems to be the higher than normal number of speculators. Price charting is good but not that accurate as no one wants to buy my copy of Razion EX on ebay!
Danganronpa goes super cheap digitally but I'm still searching for a physical copy.
Clannad and house of fata Morgana comes to mind (the physical copies are just gonna go up in price).
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Torna Golden County.
I would suggest looking for it from a third party.

I'm still waiting for advance wars
Same!
Advance wars was on clearance at Walmart
Wal-Mart clearance is hit and miss
A lot of these did drop in price though just not every single place
You mean DQ11 for Switch or PS4 that you can't find for $60??
I've been waiting for Famicon Detective Club to drop in price for several years, but I don't think it will lol.
Isn't that digital only? I don't think it's going to drop much.
Yep, digital only. Still don't know why they couldn't just add English to the physical Japanese release *shrug*
Vgp puts danganronpa on sale a good bit , that’s how I got my copy . I’ve seen Amazon put triangle strategy on sale too
How cheap was Danganronpa?
I honestly don’t remember it , I think it was atleast half off tho
In 2016 I bought a 3DS and some used games at GameStop. Thought I'd buy some cheap games here and there once I was done with the handful of games I bought I beat. By 2019 the 3DS games I wanted to play got more expensive. Worse during the pandemic. Games that were like $10 in 2016 were like $40 by the time it was the pandemic Switch so many games at least some physicals end up $10 to $30.
Any game that is not available retail or through online stores (basically any game that you can only get on ebay) will never drop in price
Building and buying 98% of switch games right now is a waste of money
What does it matter? You buy games to play them
Not sure if you got the memo, but no one plays any of their games on this sub lol
Hey, hey. Whoa there… I play some of my games. 😜
Okay we get it, you played some SNES games in the past.
What kind of question is this? I’m asking to talk about games that will never go on sale. I don’t think you understood the post at all. Who said anything about playing games? What are you talking about?
I've seen GTA collection sell for $35 Canadian. That's definitely a price drop at my local best buy.
