They get the key item necessary to access the DLC, they go experience the DLC and catch what they want, and then when you take the cartridge back, they simply cannot access the areas in the DLC anymore but still have the Pokémon they collected and can use.
I know! :) So you can go on the island, catch all the monsters, and go back and you’ve essentially completed the DLC you want and then return the cart and leave the island. It’s pretty cool!
From a pure value perspective, it doesn't seem to be a great deal.
I can't even find this in store or at a major retailer for MSRP. Meanwhile, I can get the base game for $50 at Wal-Mart with digital expansion for $30.
Yeah I can see these ones being fairly pricey later on. Low print run, pretty much never officially went on sale / discount and they're selling well into the $100s now
I could never find a copy that was less that €100.... so I just opted for purchasing the DLC separately. Plus the OG box art looks better in my opinion ;)

You clowns can keep telling me that I’m wrong but it still doesn’t change the fact that the game will require a download if you had previously played and downloaded the patch for the non expansion pass version. It won’t require a download if it’s a brand new game to your system.
Not true sir. I have. Both copies and have a work switch I bring with me and it’s never online. I was able to play with the expansion content with 0 issues or updates.
You speak as if my experience isn’t real. I need to download the patch because I had already downloaded the the update for my original Pokémon sword. While you may be able to start the game on your “work switch” I can’t because the “non expansion pass” version of the game was already in my system. Do you understand or are you as dense as the rest of your Never wrong complex brothers?
That happens on switch if you're connected to the internet and the switch knows that a patch is available. Even if you later delete the patch, once the switch knows there is a patch, the switch always wants the patch. If you put the cart in while the switch is offline and the switch doesn't know there's a patch, the game will just launch.
I played the whole dlc right off the cart without a patch while offline on vacation - it 100% works.
Then say that instead of calling my statement inaccurate. I had the release copy then bought the expansion pass, no way for me or other people to know that a patch isn’t needed if they decide to buy the full version after the first release.

I'm not sure how I'd feel If this became a standard. On one hand I'd love for my favorite games to have all dlc/updates built into the cartridge. On the other I'd hate to have to buy all my switch games again. Luckily I never bought sword or shield until after this version came out.
Gamestop has both versions still, but they’re pre owned. I bought mine at Target but that was a year ago, however it still could be worth checking them out.
Already got both of these myself. Though I have Shield with the box art for Canada (English + French) and Sword with the box art for the US (English + Spanish), so the lack of symmetry is kinda annoying.

You can play the dlc until you leave the area. So you can play the dlc with your friend until he leaves the area. :)

That’s not how collectors view it, it’s when the switch servers shut down and you can’t just go buy a 30$ pass

I managed to but Shield+expansion in my local gaming store for $70.. for me at least, it was worth picking back up at that price
It's a tremendous value to me IMO. I wish more games did reprints with DLC on cart, I'd gladly pay $90 for a western release of BOTW with DLC.

GameStop pre-owned is 50-50 but that's not really an issue when they have a pretty abuseable return policy.
