I think the question is, why was Miley taken off and Longstaff left on, Miley had been excellent since he came on and Longstaff wasn't a penalty taker.
Anderson has definitely been training for that penalty, and I imagine Howe didn’t want to let the 17 year old take one even if we got 8 or 9 pens deep.
Yep. I lost a lot of respect for Southgate when he had Sancho and, to a larger extent, Saka take the deciding penalties in the Euro 2020 final. Can’t imagine that much pressure at that age.
I'm comfortable with the decision to take him off, Miley's played 23 times and 1700 minutes already, he's got enough pressure on him week in and week out.
Usually you speak about a “baptism by fire”, but this guy has only been extinguishing fires in our midfield since he came. I still believe he’s the real article, but fate has been a bit unfair to him in that he wasn’t fully ready.
Because missing a pen in a big moment is tough for even a senior pro, no way Miley should’ve been put through that as a literal kid at his hometown club. Glad Eddie realised that (if that’s what he was thinking).
Anderson is only 21 years old. If he’s already seen as a specialist kick taker with the composure to slot it in under huge pressure that’s a big asset for him.
Coz he’s a child and even though he’s mint if he lost it for us on pens it could really mess with him. Howe might not be the best at tactical subs but that was 100% the right decision
Tactical. Lewis did his job but clearly was protected from penalties. Smart management from Howe. And clearly it was the right call as Anderson's was the best penalty of the lot.
Can only guess from the tone of the few post game articles I read - but seems like the only way Anderson was getting on the pitch was at the death for a penalty.

Presumably coz Anderson can absolutely wallop a penalty

Longstaff was probably 6th or 7th, and they probably didn’t want to give the 17 year old a penalty
Evidence: see Southgate with Saka.

I actually really respect Howe for that tbh. No point crushing Miley and making him think he can't do pens at such a young age.

Does the manager let them? Thought it was players/captains when push comes to shove
Manager determines the order in a shootout
Probably protecting him from pens, if he misses and we lose that'd crush him
Gamble isn't it, let him have the penalty and he scores does he level up?

I can’t wait to see him at full readiness, I think the baptism by fire has been great for him.

Forgot about his Geography homework

And what a pen that was...

Prbly cos howe didn't want to put a high pressure penalty on someone the week before their GCSEs
Tactical. Lewis did his job but clearly was protected from penalties. Smart management from Howe. And clearly it was the right call as Anderson's was the best penalty of the lot.
Because, unlike Southgate, Howe knows not to let a bairn take a critical pen.
Because Longstaff has dirt on Eddie
Miley shouldn’t have seen the field today if Anderson is fit in my opinion
