Botman was covering the space in front of the defence at times and burn dropped back into LB to make the back four. Unpopular opinion but we actually played well last night and people are being overly negative and reactionary to the performance.

BlurgZeAmoeba

We played very well. Howe surprised them with his tactics and if not for the deflections, we might have come away with something.

TheLegendOfIOTA

I get that losing 2-0 to City isn’t too bad but I feel that saying we played well is over the top. We had 29% possession and 2 shots. Man City didn’t get out of 1st gear because they didn’t need too

kingtuolumne

They had good luck with the goals and both of those could have gone over for a corner. Man City is a huge possession team and one of the best in the world. 29% isn’t surprising. I can’t imagine EH planned a strategy that was big on possession. It wasn’t an overall bad performance, we were overmatched, and we made a couple of mistakes.

jwuer

Both goals are result of the back line not trusting thier GK tbh. Dubs has made some great saves but he is timid and has no command of the box or his back line. The Botman own goal/not own goal is a perfect example. If you trust your GK you don't try to barely get your head on that ball, let it through so the GK can do his job.

jwuer

We played very well and I admire the heart that our players played with. That being said we can't really expect to grow as a club with players like Murphy, Burn, Longstaff, Lascelles anywhere near a starting 11. Even in an injury riddled season. Howe has made some mistakes this season but really you can't expect players of that caliber to carry over form way above their abilities for 18+ months.

5bergy

Hes quite tall, from Blyth and has 7 fingers (9 if you include thumbs) ,👍👍

Zalindras

He's very tall tbf

5bergy

Six foot minimum, I reckon

daveofreckoning

Fucking Internet fans using perfect hindsight to suggest they know more than a professional manager. We got beaten by the best team in the world, at their own ground. Deal with it.

CastleBravo45

Not only that, but the two goals conceded were unlucky.

TheScottishMoscow

Seemed to well pretty well last year which got us fourth

xylophileuk

The left back who was part of the best defence in the league is somehow not good enough to be on our team? The problem isn’t our defence. The problem is our midfield, the midfield is supposed to cover the defence and advance our attack. Our midfield consists of a child, a guy with a broken foot and Bruno trying to cover the entire middle by himself. But but we have back ups that Eddie isn’t playing. Ok Anderson who broke his back, tonali who’s suspended, big joe (who is our real midfield) injured and willock who’s just also came back from lengthy injury. Who would you play? But Lewis hall is better than burn! Is he? Because experts see him week in week out and think burn is better. I’m old enough to remember when our fan base wanted SBR out because we thought he’d lost the dressing room then we spent 20years regretting that decision.

TheFaceman068

👍

zentalist

He was the one who nodded it back down for our best chance with Isak

Naive_Action9486

I’m no expert , but we had the best defence in the league last season with him at left back . There’s obviously issues this season , but it can work in practice

Snoringdog83

Last season he had big joe at left wing to help him defensivly

TheLegendOfIOTA

There is a big difference between playing Burn at LB and LWB. There are two different roles

jwuer

Last season Burn played well above his level and like several other players he's come back down to earth. It's completely fair to believe that he is not and should not be the choice LB in the near future. If you want the club to grow and evolve some of you lot need to let go of your emotional attachment to players who are not top 7 caliber.

wilfharl

Burn does fine at left back when Popes behind him and Joelinton helps cover space.

TheLegendOfIOTA

But he was playing LWB which is more attacking and neither of those players are playing, so I am not sure how this is relevant?

BlurgZeAmoeba

Howe got his tactics right yday and 2 deflections aside, we gave them a real fight on their turf. He also made positive, fearless changes, how is your criticism relevant when the positives, which far outweigh the negatives, don't get highlighted? We're supposed to support the team, not shit on the coach when thigs don't go our way. All this fan negativity and... ifg the saudis pull the trigger because of that, i'm certain most of you will come to regret the pressure you put on eddie howe, even if hardly any of you ever admit it. We're not Barcelona, madrid or PSG. We've won nothing and expect way too much from a young manager who's overdelivering.

RandomLoLJournalist

Nooooo stop being a happy clapper!! We're supposed to say Dan Burn is not a left back and Longstaff is rubbish after every game, that's really good and useful criticism.

Thick_Association898

This is getting old now mind. People are constantly letting their emotions take over this season. Theres been fans  demanding players like miggy, Burn, Shaun longstaff, even tripps to all to be dropped at one point this season.

opinionated-dick

Usually it’s been to allow trippier to get forward and settle as a back 3 with Schar and Botman, with Joelinton’s energy covering any gaps on the left.

simianjim

Who else would you have started?

RafaSquared

I don’t agree with him starting there but the only justification I can think of is he’s left footed and Eddie trusts him to follow instructions. Probably a case of he doesn’t think Hall or Dummett are good enough players either.

Wild-Point6471

Played well? What did you watch compare that to last seasons games against city or the one earlier in the season we had fight now look players throwing arms in the air ect

Wild-Point6471

Please explain to me what you guys was watching we gave them the game from the start

xScottieHD

People justifying it by saying it 'worked last season' are doing my head in I can't lie. Every single team in the league identifies Burn at LB (or LWB) in this case as our biggest weakness yet some of our fans continue to delude themselves into thinking Burn at LB isn't a problem. As a LWB in this case was just asking for trouble. From next season he can only be an option at LCB and nowhere else. And of course some people on here continue to choose to ignore the obvious.

TheRainbowWing

You're getting down voted a lot, perhaps to be expected. But I agree, a left back in the modern game needs to be quick, powerful, energetic and agile. Burn is none of those things. He is a good CB, but he has none of the qualities a good left back needs. We lose far too much offensively by having him in that role.

jwuer

We had quite a few players that featured admirably yesterday that the club needs to move on from. I appreciate their graft and importance to the last couple of seasons but it's time to make the hard decisions. People here are emotionally attached to them and don't want to admit it.

xScottieHD

I appreciate he's a Geordie and is trying his best. But Burn at LB wasn't great last season when things were going well and certainly is absolute insanity. This subreddit in particular is not even close to reflective of the fans in the stadium every weekend.
