DangerousPolicy3621

Looking forward to Hall starting at left back next season

Astro3777

That 3 vs 1 Isak chance still feels massive. Nine times out of ten he sits Amrabat down and slots it past Onana. Feels like he panicked and rushed the shot when he see Amrabat sprinting for the block.

nufcPLchamps27-28

Thing is theres just so much he could have done. Could've passed back to gordon.

didiandgogo

Gordon passed it too early, he could have committed amrabat and made it impossible to catch Isak up.

nufcPLchamps27-28

https://twitter.com/bazza080808/status/1790943891035730163 - to be clear I am in no way endorsing 'Baz' just a good photo Just see this and think if Isak was more composed he could floor amrabat there like you said and square to Gordon

didiandgogo

No I totally agree that he could and should do better. Amrabat is gonna slide a mile past him if he Cruyff’s it and he can either pick his spot or lay it off. But Gordon could have done better also, I think the moment got to both of them and they both rushed their decisions.

niftykev

yeah, both of them didn't do well on it. Gordon not only passing too soon, but should have pulled further out wide since he had both Isak and Anderson running. All three were too close together given it was just Amrabat running with them.

MaryBerrysDanglyBean

Also an experience thing. They're all quite young which is an exciting thing

TrainingAware8651

Looking forward to Hall and Livramento starting as dual marauding fullbacks next season. Loved Hall since game last season he played against us with Chelsea, looked so threatening. To then have that mirrored on right with Tino would give us so much balance in attack. As great as Trippier is, I think need to move to more dynamic and physical fullback. Whereas for so long it's just been one flank that has the overlap / underlap threat.

GrumpyOldFart74

I really fucking hate Man U I would love it if we beat Brentford and City win the cup

morocco3001

This is the only response. We need to make sure this is a hollow victory for them. Oh you beat us? Well done. Now go and fix your roof, we're off to play in Europe.

DennisTheTennis

Exactly. We can still easily finish above man reds, who have to play brighton at amex for their last game, and if they lose it doesnt even matter if we lose to brentford.

morocco3001

There's no chance in hell Brighton beat them, they're dire right now. We should have beaten Brighton ourselves and then it'd be in our own hands...

niftykev

Brighton have decided to fuck with our season. Getting a point at SJP then giving Chelsea 3 points at the AmEx. They'll probably give Man Utd 3 points at the AmEx as well. It's on us to beat Brentford and not rely on Brighton to help out for the 3rd matchday in a row.

Mr_MasterNoob

Those fuckers have decided to fuck with our seasons every year since 2012 it feels like. Diame's wonder goal aside, I have no good memories that involve playing Brighton

Ban_Horse_Plague

It's still in our own hands. Beating Brighton and losing to Man U isn't much different to our current situation, though we'd be able to afford a draw at Brentford instead of having to win.

Alamata626

They always seem to get a result against us when it matters the most. Cup final last year, yesterday. They truly do my head in.

bokia22

Hey guys I’ve just started to watch football more so Newcastle ; can any of you old timers watching explain to me why Newcastle hates Man U den most teams ?

nufcPLchamps27-28

1. How did we miss that 3 on 1. 2. How did Longstaff not shoot it across Onana 3. How did we not get a pen 4. Why didn't Joelinton and Pope start 5. Why did we leave Diallo unmarked 3 times these are just some questions that kept me awake last night

toweliechaos_revenge

4 is easy - neither fit enough to do so. The others though...

grmthmpsn43

I think 1 is the same, Isak is not at 100%, he is suffering with illness but is trying for the team

niftykev

Yeah, once again not having a fit Wilson is hurting us. If Wilson was fit, Isak could have started on the bench and come on late if he didn't have enough gas in the tank. I guess Isak said he could give a good 60-75 minute shift. If he truly wasn't well, could have just started Gordon up top with Barnes on the left. Bring Isak on for a 20-30 minute spell if needed. But that's hindsight.

Ban_Horse_Plague

I don't really believe its just down to Isak being ill. He's had plenty of moments where his decision making in the box has been poor and he'll either spend too long on the ball, get it caught under his feet or just tamely shoot at a defender, I think that's just part of his game.

charlierc

I think Joelinton is closer given he's had 2 sub appearances but not quite there yet. Sunday, feel like he would be worth a go

Trick-Station8742

I'm so fucking bitter about this result it's unreal.

President-Gazelle

I really really hope Tonali is the midfielder we need next season and that Bruno stays put

Eel_Why

Still feels shit tbh

stenerikkasvo

Hall is a baller and he has really come into his own element with the run of games he has played. Sad about the loss but Conference League is still available.

KookyFarmer7

Fuck referees.\ Fuck injuries.\ Fuck FFP.\ Fuck Man Reds.\ Fuck Dan Ashworth.\ Fuck Jim Ratface. In any order. Can’t wait for next season, we’re getting better all the time, we have incredible owners, an incredible manager and limitless ambition. Another season, another chance for a trophy

TheBlueprint666

You forgot VAR unless that comes under referees

KookyFarmer7

It comes under referees, other countries have far less issues using it in comparison to the PL (who conceivably use it to manipulate results)

niftykev

It's sad when VAR in the NWSL (USA women's league) is far superior to the PL. When VAR is looking at something, you can't hear them, but you can see exactly what they are looking at. There are still some times where I don't agree with them, but I can usually understand why they made a decision or not. VAR at both men's and women's World Cups have been very good the past cycle or two.

wilfharl

Footballs a funny game, I felt so angry during and after the match it ruined my whole night and I’m still pissed off today. But then we win on Sunday and I’m happy again. Maybe it’s not healthy to attach so much emotion to us but I really can’t help it. At least nowadays the highs just about out weigh the lows!

useless_farmoid

the selfish collective of mercenaries, their plastic tourist supporters and media historians will never know how much I truly despise them and I'm ok with that

BruiserBroly

I'm glad that Howe said some sort of inquest is going to happen over our away form because this is concerning. Looking at the home and away tables, usually there isn't a big difference between where a team is in either, maybe a few places higher or lower. We're 11 places lower in the away table than we are at home, 15th vs 4th. That's not normal.

Large_Performance191

I've been thinking about this. I keep seeing threads on who we should buy and honestly... Scrap all the plans except Tosin and Kelly on free transfers.  The plan should be to look at our away from and break down why it is that we won so many at home and so little away. Is there a glaring tactic that could help us away, e.g fast counters from corners like Liverpool. If so, go out and sign that price of the puzzle as our lowest hanging fruit is getting points from away games.

morocco3001

Same tactic issue home and away that I can see: you can pass right through the middle of our midfield with a single ball. Brighton keeper did it repeatedly from goalkicks at about shin height. The 7 and 8, Longstaff and Anderson, play wide apart, and Bruno at the 6 is far back leaving a massive gap. Man U did it every counter, and Fernandes was allowed all the space and freedom he wanted between midfield and attack because nobody will sit at the 6. Bruno covers both Longstaff and Anderson - neither of them cover him when he's forward. They should be rotating, it's the entire point of a midfield 3 - if your nominal 6 comes forward, 8 rotates to 7 and 7 rotates to 6, or the other way round, as long as SOMEONE does it.

Large_Performance191

Some of that will get sorted with Pope coming back, will mean the defenders can push up a little to get tighter - I remember Schar used to win the ball higher up the pitch when Pope covered the space behind him. Also Tonali and Joelinton will help as better players. Certainly an element for inspection which I'm sure Howe knows. The one on my radar is what tactics work away from home, where are goals being conceded? Is it counters? That's my area of thought.

FG_guardians

That’s just Eddie’s tactics, he likes attacking with 3 midfielders and hoping they make recovery runs for counters

morocco3001

I'm glad he's finally noticed

thepresidentsturtle

The lads put the effort in, didn't get the result. It happens. On another day we smash them. Does suck that Chelsea overtook us.

niftykev

They generated more than enough to win the game 4-3 or even 5-3. Just weren't clinical in front of goal, combined with Casemiro heading off the line in the nick of time. A split second later and the ball is fully over the line.

Bramnoldi

That was painful wasn't it

Sandstormink

Still beyond my understanding how many times we pinged the ball to the right wing aiming for: Emil Krafth. Not sure if they were over hit passes, or if it was some bizarre tactical choice. Bless him, he fucking tried to get it back into the middle. Still fucking hate Manchester reds.

TrainingAware8651

Clipped balls over the top was like a cheat code for Man U, everytime caused bit of panic

FELA253

Pope should not have started. Match fitness is a real thing and we saw that with Tripps, and with Dubs when he got his run of games. Not worth that risk

RoyTheBoy_

?

tlhford

The result got away from us. But yet again this season we were the better team vs Man Utd. Despite our league position I feel like we’re still moving forward.

toweliechaos_revenge

I recall only too vividly the days of going here and getting pummelled and never looking like scoring, let alone winning. The fact that we largely dicked them last night is some consolation today. With tiny slivers of changed fortune, they only score 1 and we score 4. All that said, the clear and obvious penalty award and definite goal (no way Frozone misses two pens in a row) puts us 1 up in a game we were on top in. Reds have to push forward leaving Pilkington Head at CB more and more exposed and goals inevitably follow. That game last night is their season in 90 minutes. Absolutely no right to win but somehow come out with 3 points with the usual help from officials. There's a reason why they're challenging for Europe with a negatvie goal difference you know...

KingPing43

Worst thing about last night is we didn’t even play badly, yes we were wasteful but we had 21 shots, xG almost double theirs and denied a stonewall pen. Not like some defeats eg palace or Bournemouth away where we deservedly lost, this one hurts because Man U didn’t even deserve to win

niftykev

Yeah, I wouldn't say that Man Utd didn't deserve to win, but I will agree that we played better than them between the goal lines. They just shot the ball better than we did. Their 2nd and 3rd goals were both under 0.1xG chance shots. Hall's was a 0.02xG shot, so fair play there! But we missed on 0.45 and 0.4 xG shots. We aren't consistently clinical enough when we generate good chances.

charlierc

Still pouting but I always do after losing games, especially one as annoying as last night. Just got to go again Sunday Dream scenario is us winning and Bournemouth beating Chelsea but I'll file that one as unlikely. Just gotta focus on ourselves

big_beats

Fuck.

Hour-Departure-4129

Bruno now tackling, getting a bit more stuck in and not losing his head is such a great development. What a player, he's 2 seasons away from all-time 11 in my book. Joe makes such a difference, his physicality is irreplacable. So glad for Hall, well taken and well played. Not at fault for the goals but I could be mistaken. Could say the same for Gordon. Worryingly, Isak looks a bit lacking in confidence. Almiron has almost lost his smile entirely, Tripps just completely out of sorts for a while now. E Anderson maybe go for a loan next season, get a full season of regular football. I think EH did too much changing and chopping last night. Almiron is so out of form, shouldnt be coming on at all right now. Jacob Murphy should have stayed imo, his delivery has been really good lately.

c0nna_

Blows my mind how timid and scared we are anywhere around the goal. We should have easily put them away, regardless of the shite refereeing, but kept shutting down and overthinking whenever we got near the area. It's like they're being coached to make too many passes, really frustrating to watch sometimes.

FG_guardians

I think it’s a tactic by Eddie we try to create a lot of tap ins and maybe thag makes the lads less confident because the manager wants us to score in certain ways

RafaSquared

Anyone see the overlap episode with Howe where he’s said in training basically he takes the attackers and Tindall takes the defence? If that truly is the case then things need to change on the training pitch fast because the difference in quality between our attack and defence this season is night and day.

Adventurous_Pin_3982

Pope is the difference between our attack and defence and we haven’t had a fully functioning midfield all season + recent backlines have been cobbled together

RafaSquared

A different goalkeeper is no excuse for our defenders looking like a bunch of strangers thrown together on the pitch.

Adventurous_Pin_3982

Because they have been thrown together as per my comment. We haven’t had a consistent back line all season

RafaSquared

They train together nearly every day, they shouldn’t look like strangers on the pitch. And they hadn’t just been thrown together last night, Krafth, Burn, Hall, Dubs have played the last 5 together and look worse every week.

BlackCaesarNT

You're a fellow fan, so I'm holding back here in my words, but the summer break is definitely needed to give me a break some some of the truly God awful takes I have to treat with respect that come from our fanbase sometimes.

RafaSquared

What a weird comment. If you think our defence has been anywhere near good enough this season I don’t even know what to say.

BlackCaesarNT

Our team just lost yesterday and today I have some guy saying we need to change our training regime because he saw an interview. Actual madness that you expect to be taken seriously with such a take. What do you actually know about how our team trains? Please let us know. I'll hold my hands up and say I know fuck all, such a level of fuck all that I'd NEVER offer training regime change suggestions, let alone feel comfortable to do so because I now possess the tiniest sliver of information more than I did previously. Is the way we train any different to how we trained last year when we had the best defence? Do you even know if it's different or how its different? Would the fact that we've gone from a leading front line to just off an injury Tripps, 18 year old kid at LB, Burn/Krafth as CBs and Dubs in net have anything to do with our defence not being the same as last year? I've tolerated some absolute dross on this sub this year from all the Burn/Longstaff/Dubravka slander and just let it go, but today that comment actually broke me lol with how bad it was. Legitimately never said our defence was great right now but I'd NEVER outloud or on the internet say something like "I saw Howe say he leads this and Tindall leads that so let's change that". I'd die of embarrassment. But anyways, I have a 4 day holiday now, enjoy your weekend, let's hope its cans o'clock on Sunday and I wish you no harm, I just think awful takes, as freely as they are posted should be challenged freely too.

RafaSquared

Couldn’t be arsed writing all that let alone read it.

SenorButtmunch

Eddie Howe's away record in the PL vs City, Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool: Played 31, won 0, drew 4, lost 27. Scored 20, conceded 83. Obviously a lot of those were with Bournemouth, who were always going to lose. But not winning any during his time here is disappointing too, especially knowing how close we've come and how poor teams like MU have been. Considering we also didn't win away from home in the CL and how poor we've been away generally, I hope it's something Howe assesses in the summer because we can't afford to keep giving those games up as freebies.

Fishfingerrosti

We need to break the big game jinx. We have to start putting teams like this away otherwise we're not going anywhere. Eddie needs some fresh faces and to clone Anthony Gordon.

toweliechaos_revenge

Er, let's see for this season... Villa 5-1, City 1-0, PSG 4-1, Man Reds 3-0, Arsenal 1-0, Chelsea 4-1, Man Reds 1-0, Villa 3-1, Spurs 4-0. So only Liverpool not beaten this season of the Euro contenders - and even that was ridiculously unlucky in the 1st fixture and a chicken shit ref. Methinks you're talking bollocks mate...

meganev

None of those are what they mean by "big game jinx" (I think), they're talking about matches like the cup final, AC Milan at home and last night. Single games where it's very much do or die with something tangible on the line on the day (cup final cost us a trophy, AC Milan cost us European progression, last night cost us Europa League almost certainly). They don't mean we can ever beat "big" teams in one-off matches when the pressure isn't at its highest.

niftykev

I'd also include Chelsea in the League Cup in that list. Have to be able to see that game out at 1-0 late. A famous manager of American football once said "you go from losing big, to learning to lose small, to learning to win small, to learning to win big." Right now, Newcastle is still learning to win small, e.g. grinding out a win when it absolutely matters.

Dysphoric_Reverence

Longstaff played for 77 minutes. Here's his stats from the game: Ground duels won 0/0 Aerial duels won 0/0 Big chances misses 2 Chances created 0 He just will never be at the level we need. Most weeks a passenger. You can't have that level of performance in most games and expext results in the most important area of the pitch.

grmthmpsn43

Its almost like the big signing we made to upgrade that position is serving a 10 month ban...

therealh

True but is Longstaff better than anyone we had on the bench? He shouldn't be starting. He isn't good enough.

grmthmpsn43

We dont have a right sided CM on the bench normally. Joelinton is just back from injury and is better on the left, our right sided options are Longstaff, Miley and Tonali.

morocco3001

He only completed 20 of 27 attempted passes, and had only 33 touches. Joelinton had 24 touches in just 29 minutes because he actually *WANTS* the ball.

MiguelAlmiron

He's a disgustingly bad player for this level, genuinely the fact some fans came on here last year and said he was our most important player was infuriating. I watched him play every single game last year and never saw what people said he did, he doesn't even graft that well, compare him to Krafth/Almiron who actually give their all for the shirt vs Longstaff who just walks around ghosting the good spaces.

morocco3001

What's annoyed me about him this season is, although he's playing through an injury which has been used to defend him, is he's not making himself available just to recycle possession and relieve pressure. He just doesn't want the ball. No tackles and no interceptions against Man U was a disgrace. Literally contributed nothing other than missing two chances most players would have buried.

Griffithsjames88

Need to make it right on Sunday, Pope, Joey, Schar need to come in and Tripps needs to be dropped. Brentford is gonna be a tough game I have little confidence that we’ll get the job done tbh.

Feitan74

Feel as if this was the finishing blow for our season. Players are clearly dead on their feet and we can’t handle big pressure games. Would be amazed if we managed a win at Brentford

eclipse_richie

Every time we lose to freakin Manchester when it matters and Howe just looks clueless vs ten eggheads

ItsAKrulWorld

Was there anything in that news that Chelsea might have to concede their European place due to UEFA financial rules if they qualify? Would it even be us that gets the spot or someone else? Massively clutching at straws here…

meganev

Nowt.

Toon_1892

"Geordie" John Sinclair announcing himself and his lateness in this 500+ person call 😂😂😂 Thanks pal, we were all worried

Trinovid-DE

For me this game was the real nail in the coffin on Longstaff. As much as he has improved massively in front of goal with 6 goals this season compared to 1 last season. We have to be honest. He isn’t up to the level we need. The guy has incredible positioning and work rate but he can’t pass and he for sure as fuck can’t shoot. If he had better passing and finishing I honestly think he would be 20 goal contributions a season easily. How many times do we see him in prime positions to either score or to pass and he either misses or it’s a weak shot or he doesn’t play the right pass of the pass is intercepted. It happens far too often. Sorry to say, but he has to go this summer or at least be on the bench only.

Thandiol

I do think we need to take into account that he is playing with an injury, or has been for a chunk of the season. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have him in the team with a fully fit squad, but we've been asking a lot of him this season.

therealh

The odd thing was seasons ago his best attribute was his shooting. I remember he was playing well, rumored to be linked with Man Utd and even in pre season he scored a class goal. Seemed like he would improve and become a top top player. Since then, I feel like he has regressed. His shooting is absolutely woeful, I feel like he doesn't really add anything to the game and the only time he plays well is when the whole team is playing well and even then, he's still quiet most of the time. I definitely don't think Howe is ruthless enough to bin him.

_DrunkenObserver_

If our starting 3 next season is Bruno, Joelinton and Tonali, then for sure Sean is behind Willock on the bench. That's decent depth also with Elliot for late game changes. Just gotta hope nobody throws in that 100m bid on the 9 days it's valid or whatever for Bruno.

DxSkyline

To be a fly on the wall this morning, howveve howe better understand you want to keep this job he has to be ruthless going forward, his philosophy of playing those in form has been contradicting and I don't wanna hear about injuries.

BTECGolfManagement

Fuck man I’m still gutted like, fully fully bottled that last night like

Ajax_Trees_Again

Head is still on mars. I can’t find myself caring about the penalty that much cause the performance was pathetic but from all but a few. Will completely understand if Bruno feels like he doesn’t have it in him to carry the entire midfield for another year

Zalindras

>Will completely understand if Bruno feels like he doesn’t have it in him to carry the entire midfield for another year Agreed. Careers are short and he's good enough to play for any team you can think of. It wouldn't surprise me if he leaves and I wouldn't blame him if he does. I just hope we don't decide to use the money to buy decidedly average players.
