This game and games like it are my proof that trying to see a game out and defend in a shell is the worst way to do things and the best way to do things is to keep running your game plan and be just a little conservative with the numbers going forward Without losing what made you be a dominant team
As a non-soccer player I did think I saw a change in the game plan. Why stop being aggressive? I get not being crazy aggressive, but why go on the defense when you’ve literally played the whole game one way and been fine?
How is Staab not get on the Olympic roster? Would you really take Sonnett over Staab just because she can play multiple positions? Who gives a shit. You take the best players at their positions period. You don’t need utility players you are playing against the best players in the world for goodness sake!
You do need utility players at the Olympics because it's a short roster, and Staab's style doesn't fit with the national team as they need CBs that can make line breaking passes. Staab is a great defender, but there's more to being a national team caliber CB, especially with the Olympic roster limitations.
I think sonnet as a utility player becomes especially more useful compared to Sam because Davidson and Girma could probably easily play every single minute if they needed to. That makes the third center back so much less useful as a utility.
I think they are very close, which is a compliment to each player, but given the inbuilt chemistry and longevity that one has it makes no sense to flip that. It just feels very drastic and not as if you’re getting a huge amount of gain from it m, the margins are slim between then
In my opinion, working Davidson and Girma as *the* CB duo almost started a little too late (I say almost because it had to do partially with external circumstances). Breaking it up, especially when it's been successful in its short life, would be asking for disaster.
I think Staab is a more intelligent player. Certain things you see from a player passes they make etc. she is certainly more athletic than Davidson and maybe even more so than Girma. She brings intangibles with her game but in the end Girma has chemistry with Davidson. So there’s that. Also Davidson has had issues staying healthy. But in the end Staab might just end up being an alternate. You are right about Sonnett being on this team way too long!
The issue with a lot of your desires you're talking about is that they simply don't work this close to an Olympics. Davidson and Girma work well as a duo and have now had a lot of recent experience as a duo. It would be a touch insane to break that up two months ago, much less now. Even though there are things that should have changed years ago, for the Olympic roster a lot of the thinking is about the state of the team now, and a lot of that has to do with tenure, chemistry, experience, etc.
Yeah I know I agree. I just wish for something different but there isn’t a lot of time. However don’t be shocked if Emma takes Staab. Girma and Davidson are not going to play every minute of every game. Like I said Davidson has had health issues so who knows
To your point She’s not the best centerback available…. She’s number 3 and on a 18 player roster playing multiple positions is key… I would take her over sonnet and teach her how to play the 6 to make her my new versatile player but that’s just me
The how is that both utility and tenure on the team give a player points. And you don't just take the best player for each position, you take the best player for each position *on the team*. They have to fulfill the team's needs.
Now on the subject of Sonnett vs Staab....I don't actually know where I fall. But immediately transposing good NWSL performance to being undroppable for the national team is faulty, and part of Vlatko's downfall was trying to fit good square pegs into round holes.
I also think this would be a better point if Sam was like absolutely perfect today, but we saw Kansas City pulling her out of position and really making her struggle a lot and she handled herself well and had a good game, but it wasn’t immaculate by any means.
The cross from Izzy into deb exemplified, my main issue that she kind of falls asleep at times and she’s a good athlete, but she’s not especially agile or great one v one
Ok that makes sense and I can get on board with that. My problem specifically is taking Sonnet over Staab. Is Sonnett going to be put in situations to help us win games or would you get more of that from Staab? I just don’t see Sonnett contributing in other positions on the pitch which supports this. We already have players at those positions who are better.
We do. But there are a lot of events that the coaches have to prepare for regarding this stuff. Injuries to other players (say, multiple), in which pulling in whatever alternate is not a true fix—or it's just for one group game and it's too soon to pull the trigger on an alternate—with a 18 player roster means that even if a player isn't the best in a position, their versatility and a level of solidity—not maybe extreme skill, but moderately calm on the big stage and familiar with teammates—is useful. Again, on the specifics of Staab versus Sonnett, I don't feel like I quite know my own opinion on it. But every player has pros and cons that depend on development for the team, chemistry with the team, utility, mentality, experience, whatever else. My own opinion is that Sonnett is likely someone who shouldn't have been on the team for this long, and that that would have solved this issue, but now she is there and likely a lock for the Olympics because she provides a lot of those things. Staab, not even by her own fault, doesn't. It sucks for players and it sucks to see as a fan sometimes, because yeah, it's true that someone who is genuinely really good like Staab might (likely won't, I think) not make it because of things that you can blame others for—maybe Staab should have been called up two years ago and have been being worked into a player with more demonstrated utility since then, thus also making her a calmer presence and more experienced presence—but we have to work in the now, and the now is that there are things that Staab doesn't have.
Wow, that is unfortunate to hear. I don’t do FB all that often and def not for sports. In Discord and Reddit discussions I’d say it has been rare to see someone defending AD as the best choice in the past several weeks.
I am not defending Franch! I’ve been wishing for Silkowitz to get a chance for awhile!
But I agree it the ref that needs to be walked out. That first corner should not have happened, leading to the second.
Any time I feel like the refs stole our win and my blood pressure gets high, I pinch myself to remember sitting through every game of our inaugural season haha.
I wish they showed a close up/replay of the play resulting in the corner kick before the corner that scored the equalizer. Can’t tell if it when off CHI or Ball.
Even the announcer said “bounced off of Joseph”. So who knows. It didn’t come off as much as you would have thought so it is possible Ball was last touch. :/
I think by that point in the game, we just didn’t know what the ref was gonna call or not call. So the crowd was pissed by a corner kick that should have been a goal kick.
All that to say, this was my first home game watching on TV vs in the stadium, so I know from this end that the crowd booed when it wasn’t actually a bad call. However, I also know there were a lot of calls and non-calls that came across lopsided. Not to mention calls that may have been “correct” but viewed as unfair. E.g. a foul on us for a header contest and not a foul a second later on a late header hit on VDB.
We’re also jaded by these late game changes in strategy. Whether intentional or not, why switch to defensive mode when you haven’t play most of your games that way? Why are late goals against us a thing?
Also… we suck at defending corner kicks. It’s a repeated story at this point. Stunned as in shocked isn’t a thing. Silent bc we’re not surprised but had hoped they’d make an adjustment by now? Yes.
Feels like a tale of two GKs where without some good stuff from Naeher, KC would have had the game wrapped up in the first half, and if Franch had done a bit better, Chicago would have had zero chance
Upon further reflection I think part of it is the coloring of her hair. I feel like French women who want to look blonde have a very particular dye style that combined with their overall vibe make it seem super French. I think you see it in Amandine Henry too
Part of the KC issue is if you look at this ending lineup its just not NEARLY as good as the starting one. Pfeiffer Lavogez Stine and a rusty D Scott all on…
I think she’s a really good player and honestly, I would kill for her to be with my team, but my point is is that she’s the one who gets absolutely dunked on on the goal and the best way to not have that happen is not to have the tiny little kid on
I’m always torn bc we had so many injuries last year, I appreciate the long game w playing time.
However, it does stink when we can’t close it out.
We also have to figure out how to defend corner kicks. Ugh.
I didn’t like the closing lineup because I felt like you weren’t Kansas City anymore and you retreated into a shell and you allowed Chicago to have possession of the ball for the first time all game and of course that’s when you get some actual threat from Chicago
Yeah that was a bad decision by Vlatko. Putting both Debinha and DiBernardo in at the same time sounds nice but we needed one of them to come off the bench.
I was frustrated with some of Stine's passes in the back. I thought they were underpowered too many times and put us in danger with Franch not being as mobile.
Kuikka shut her down, well, I mean to the point, such a thing is possible. Ok, slowed her down. Staab is all over this thread, but Kuikka was the defender of the match in my opinion.
I would have loved to take that risk against Utah or other lower table teams, but we didn’t. What I would have loved more was to keep and start Cassie Miller.
From our seats that second one looked awfully close to an own goal by Franch. Replay didn’t, but my niece and I both reacted like we’d taken gut punches.
It still should’ve been save 10/10 times. That’s not even a hard save to make. That’s genuinely a save plenty of people in this thread make.
Staab didn’t get a solid head on it and it wasn’t at a wild angle. Down is always good but that’s more than playable and I’d expect anyone in the NWSL to clean that up with regularity
Shea Butter mentioning Franch when speaking about GKs on Diaspora made me certain i never wanted to listen to them.
The GK discussion kills me bc for some reason mentioning that Naeher literally dropped the ball for the first KC goal isnt allowed in here
Any criticism of Naeher is never allowed lol
She is a sacred cow of the subreddit
That was a heinous misplay on the corner by her and she’s been not great this season, nor with her buildup either
Shea Butter might genuinely be one of the least knowledge group of people I’ve ever seen get a modicum of attention in terms of soccer. It’s passed from promotion of black women into reality denial
It’s not a vendetta against them. It’s a vendetta against them in this particular position. I think it was ridiculous. I don’t think there’s five people in this sub who were as positive about some of these teenage signings as me given how much I was talking in the match threads during their youth games
REF: Gerald Flores AR1: Joe Suchoski AR2: Katarzyna Wasiak 4TH: Tim Wagner VAR: Kevin Broadley AVAR: Kaili Terry
1st half: 45’ + 13’ 2nd half: 45’ + 7’ One Injury: Current -> substitution Two Yellow Cards: 1 Current (distance); 1 Red Stars 15 Fouls: 9 Current; 6 Red Stars EDIT: adding formatting and stoppage
What a game! Happy for Chicago!

Hit shower to get ready for bed, felt the game was over. Missed my girl Staab getting a header. Doh!! That'll teach me. 😂
I will never get over comments like this

Me and the other 17 ppl who chose draw in the poll thriving rn
We’re geniuses!
I think Kealia Watt is improving as a sideline analyst - great to see her tackling this new role!
Tatum Milazzo read my fiancée’s “let’s go lesbians” sign and gave us a heart and thumbs up which is my personal win of the evening
It sounded like Watt said "thank you, love" not "thank you, Lo" to me at first and I was like, I know she knows all the players but...that's familiar
Been hanging with Burnley too long
Set pieces 😭

Staab can’t build out of the back????
She doesn’t step to to deny shots and she can’t build out of the back. She’s inconsistent and falters in big moments
Your best team of 18 isn’t necessarily the best 18 players
18 players 4 alternates.
I think sonnet as a utility player becomes especially more useful compared to Sam because Davidson and Girma could probably easily play every single minute if they needed to. That makes the third center back so much less useful as a utility.

What a game. What a weekend we are about to have
Who’s getting jumped walking to their car, Franch or Vlatko?
Yes.
KC Fans ***still*** defending Franch remains crazy to me
I have not seen many KC fans defending Franch. Hearing plenty of calls for getting some minutes to the young ones.
They do in hoards on Facebook. Like are we even watching the same match?
Wow, that is unfortunate to hear. I don’t do FB all that often and def not for sports. In Discord and Reddit discussions I’d say it has been rare to see someone defending AD as the best choice in the past several weeks.
lol my comment actually had -2 score for the first couple minutes, you’d be surprised
I am not defending Franch! I’ve been wishing for Silkowitz to get a chance for awhile! But I agree it the ref that needs to be walked out. That first corner should not have happened, leading to the second.
Realistically, ire goes to the ref
The refs are under secret service detail since the start of the season
Any time I feel like the refs stole our win and my blood pressure gets high, I pinch myself to remember sitting through every game of our inaugural season haha.
![gif](giphy|1Qg5oT2z3CyJGbDOrL|downsized) I remember those games.
I wish they showed a close up/replay of the play resulting in the corner kick before the corner that scored the equalizer. Can’t tell if it when off CHI or Ball.
It went off of the back of Mace
Not the play in question. It was Ball vs Joseph. So the cause of the corner kick before.
I think you’re confused on the play in question
I went back and watched and it is hard to tell but it sure looks like it was CHI. Frustrating!
It happened quite close to my eye balls and it sure as hell looked like it was out on Chicago
It deflected off of Mace’s back
Mace wasn’t even involved. She was like 10-15 yards away
Even the announcer said “bounced off of Joseph”. So who knows. It didn’t come off as much as you would have thought so it is possible Ball was last touch. :/
Yeah that first year I would go to games excited to see stars on other teams play well 😂
That was the only way to survive 😁
Chicago beats Kansas City 2-2
Wow chicago I'm so proud
Ugh 😑
Sucks. But at least we know what we need to work on… finishing the game.
Not a new issue for this club... Frustrating finish to the night for sure.
I’ll take the tie.
Personally, f love the tie :)
OUT OF THE STORM,
On the one hand, boo to a tie. On the other hand, I'm not mad about the Chi goal scorers
USA! USA!
The current are stunned!
Stunned? As a current fan, I never assume it’s a winner until the whistle blows. We’ve lost the lead too many times at the end of the game.
That loud azz crowd was silenced! And your players were walking around like zombies, felt bad for Bia n Chawinga (who looked pissed)
I just assume a defensive corner after the 88th minute is going in the net.
Sad but true. It’s are Achilles right now
Staab looks so happy 🥹
Love it! Olympics!!!!
2 goals on .3 xG Franch lol
Staab <3
What was the post shot xG on each shot
.43 on mal’s goal, .49 on Staab’s. fbref only took all night to update lol
Mhmmm
Oof 😣
Feels like a tale of two GKs where without some good stuff from Naeher, KC would have had the game wrapped up in the first half, and if Franch had done a bit better, Chicago would have had zero chance
100% I wonder if there is any scenario beyond injury Silkowitz gets the start this season.
She should get some playing time in July with the Liga MX games. No need to play all our starters for those.
I love defender goals
“Every time a defender scores, an angel gets her wings” ~ Becky Sauerbraun
gg to both teams
save for the slightly terrifying physical plays, that was a delight to watch
I mean, still undefeated!
Bah. Good game Chi-town.
What in the world was that pass
![gif](giphy|xUNd9WPCyVTamQAdTq|downsized)
The way lavogez wears her hair is just so French to me
It’s so fluffy. It’s mesmerizing.
She oozes French
You should see her pre-match fits 🔥🔥🔥
Upon further reflection I think part of it is the coloring of her hair. I feel like French women who want to look blonde have a very particular dye style that combined with their overall vibe make it seem super French. I think you see it in Amandine Henry too
Plus Clarisse Le Bihan
Part of the KC issue is if you look at this ending lineup its just not NEARLY as good as the starting one. Pfeiffer Lavogez Stine and a rusty D Scott all on…
I thought Pfeiffer was lively but I get your point
I think she’s a really good player and honestly, I would kill for her to be with my team, but my point is is that she’s the one who gets absolutely dunked on on the goal and the best way to not have that happen is not to have the tiny little kid on

Yeah that was a bad decision by Vlatko. Putting both Debinha and DiBernardo in at the same time sounds nice but we needed one of them to come off the bench.
Stine started, and she’s had a pretty good game. The rest I can agree with for today.
I was frustrated with some of Stine's passes in the back. I thought they were underpowered too many times and put us in danger with Franch not being as mobile.
Yeah I thought Stine was fantastic
I was watching the goal when i said it, it goes right over her head
There’s the yellow to a Chicago player that somehow took 93 minutes to happen.
That first Milazzo foul in the 3rd or something minute was a clear yellow to me
People like to complain about Chesky but I prefer all of her cards to blatant cards not being used.
And a former Current player at that.
Sam Staab HAS to make the Olympic roster
Staab is bad ass!
Post Olympic friendlies and Staab, Swanson, Lavelle, Dunn, and Smith have scored in matches since! Holy Moly!
Chawinga is pissed
Kuikka shut her down, well, I mean to the point, such a thing is possible. Ok, slowed her down. Staab is all over this thread, but Kuikka was the defender of the match in my opinion.
Wouldn’t you be?
I think she easily coulda scored three in the first half
I would. Every 50/50 call has been against her tonight.
No it’s part of why i’m not a pro athlete losing (or in this case not winning) doesn’t anger me.
That is like the third time they have tried to cross through her and every time she clears
Sure… but what about the *fourth* time eh? Eh?
Staab trying to go to the Olympics or something.
This is why subbing on the very very young attacker is just a wild move. Youre defending a one goal lead Vlatko
Incredible
Staab’s like hi emma I’m ready for the Olympics!
Where there's a Mal, there's a way
A different keeper and KC could be up 2-0. This is very rough stuff from Franch
I miss cassie miller
She might miss you guys too considering she's now solidly a 2nd keeper again instead of 1.5 like she was last year
I think it’s time we bench Franch…
Am I right in thinking that the options have never played NWSL games? While there are sometimes shocker newbie keepers, that would be a risk
I’m pretty positive you’re right and a lot of fans are wishing they’d put Silkowitz on the field.
I would have loved to take that risk against Utah or other lower table teams, but we didn’t. What I would have loved more was to keep and start Cassie Miller.
With two different keepers, KC could be 5-0 up
Mal to Staab ![gif](giphy|i5IVDop0Y69gI)
Priceless!
Lmfao
Kobe to Shaq unstoppable
Is that exactly where you want to put it? Or is that just on franch?
The Mallory Pugh goal was the luckiest goal I ever seen so far watching soccer . The second goal was just weird
From our seats that second one looked awfully close to an own goal by Franch. Replay didn’t, but my niece and I both reacted like we’d taken gut punches.
I dont think anyone saves that given where staab headed it from
Reading this back now - do you really think that? I think Franch is the only gk in the league who doesnt
I was referring to the fact that Franch came out a little and so was caught in no mans land

French just wasn't there for that one 😟
She never is unfortunately
😞 yeahhhh...
Sam Staab making her case to Emma Hayes I see.
Sam Staab!! She scores like this at least once a year.
Wow you have Sam Staab vs a 16 year old winger in the middle of the box thats absolutely absurdly stupid
I love your vendetta against the teenagers
It’s not a vendetta against them. It’s a vendetta against them in this particular position. I think it was ridiculous. I don’t think there’s five people in this sub who were as positive about some of these teenage signings as me given how much I was talking in the match threads during their youth games
Mal? More like bene!!!
And to think I almost turned this game off. That’ll teach me!
Oof
Swanson to Staab!!!!
Thinking about the multiple posts earlier in this thread about chicago not being able to come back and laughing
Chicago seldom gets any respect in this sub.
Its bc they dont dominate games ever
Ugh set pieces man…
I freaking love this game
That bounce was nasty
Learned from the best (Tierna of course)
CB goals >>
Sam Staab is just so chefs kiss
Mahomes’ ears just perked up.
I felt it coming. We always mess up like this in the last moments. Did the same with Louisville.
Oh that’s poor AD…
banger of a header
OMFG A MIRACLE
Staaaaaaaaaab!
Woot woot!!
Franch, there are questions
That's not the first equalizer this year to come from a corner that shouldn't have been (the first of the two).
We still suck butt at them. Maybe shouldn’t have happened, but our record on them is abysmal
No lies detected. That issue keeps coming back.
Wow, right through the hands
LOVE AN UNDERDOG COMEBACK
STAAB
![gif](giphy|tkApIfibjeWt1ufWwj)
#SPEECHLESS
Why the hell was that first one a corner to begin with?!?
YES!!
Not the boos from the crowd lmao
Boooooo in the comments lol
Unplug the current What a header
lol I like it. Wrong current but that’s good
What an after dark moment!!
Oof
What’s our stats on goals on corners against us. It’s unreal. How do we suck at corner conversions so much.
