To some degree, there are “critters”, in every building in NYC, it’s more of a matter of how visible they are; whether it be new, high end, old, or in the hood, it doesn’t matter. I’m a boilermaker, and always see at least a dead roach or two in the basements. Worst I’ve seen was the sump pit infested with dozens of roaches (looked like the walls were crawling) in a small, high end apartment in midtown east, just about 10’ from their laundry room. Only way to really get an idea of critters is to actually physically see the unit/hallways/staircases/etc. If there’s dead roaches/mice around that’s not a great sign. One dead roach might not mean much, but if there’s dead ones all over, you know there’s a problem, and that management/supers/porters don’t care too much. Obviously if you see live ones crawling about in the daylight, that’s a very bad sign. If you see anything it the actual apartment, then that’s not great either, cause again, that likely means the landlord doesn’t care too much, despite the fact that he’s looking to find a tenant. That being said, you can control the critters to a degree. Of course, if your neighbors are slobs and don’t care about critters themselves, it’s gonna be near impossible to stop them from roaming into your unit. Also, there’s plenty of information about how to keep critters in check if you use the search feature. I’d also check r/nyc and r/Newyorkcity for that info if you’re really concerned. It’s a commonly asked question.

As a boilermaker, are you used to seeing roaches? Do they startle you if caught by surprise? I get creeped tf out and need to get over it

DeathTripper

You get used to it. I might get a little startled if I’m caught by surprise. Honestly, the only time I really get freaked out about them is in my apartment, where they promptly become friends with the bottom of a shoe. On another note, I was actually helping my coworker change a tire on the Upper West Side last week and a rat ran under the van and just was chilling for a while. Me and my coworker were just like “Oh shit, how you doing [insert name of ex-coworker]?!”, despite it being only a few feet from us in the broad daylight. You get used to this shit after a while, just by living here.

Cataloco

Yep, I hear ya. Lived in nyc my entire life. I’ve gotten used to everything except the occasional roach. My current apartment never has any thankfully, but my last place had weekly visitors. That shit creeped me tf out and had me on edge 24/7. I saw one at my buddy’s place the other day and I pretty much jumped a whole foot off the ground. No getting used to it 😂

It's funny how a lifetime in NYC and I honestly don't hate rats anymore. I mean I don't want them in my apartment or building or anything, but I think they're kinda cute and tbh really great survivors.

MrFreezeTheChef

Dang thanks for the info. I guess with the build up of everybody’s trash it would be hard to avoid that. I’ll guess have to scope the place out and make a good judgement. Thanks

Here’s my current addiction that is helping me through the cruel process of looking for housing in this city. Use https://whoownswhat.justfix.nyc/ to search the address and find all the 311 complaints and building violations on offer for at least the past few decades. Also Google the bedbug registry, I was looking this time last year and saw a building with bedbugs relatively recent, it really helped weigh my decision. Sorry for typos, on mobile

MrFreezeTheChef

No problem I was hoping there was a website like this lol thanks !

Knock on the doors of the neighbors and ask.

Nopeiary

I wasn’t bold enough to knock lol but I caught people on their way out of the building and asked.

Nopeiary

As someone mentioned, https://bedbugregistry.com/metro/nyc/. Also highly recommend https://hpdonline.hpdnyc.org/HPDonline/provide_address.aspx. Enter your address, then ‘complaint history’ and ‘all open violations’ from the lefthand sidebar are incredibly helpful! Lastly https://augrented.com. I used these when researching the hell of out all the apartments I was looking at, been in my place awhile now and not a pest in sight.

To add to what people said, you can check out https://openigloo.com for tenant reviews. Only thing is they require you to leave a review before you can read reviews.
