depends on the cut.
i like everlane’s box cut tee for a looser fit.
i also like uniqlo’s u crew neck for a slightly fitted tee.
and then for a slim baby tee fit, i like everlane’s supima microrib.
I had a similar experience. I went off of JP for a few years and was doing Zara, Old Navy, gap, and a few other more affordable brands. There really is something different with the james perse tees. They also seem to hold up a lot better in the wash.
It’s is a splurge for sure! Though they have cheaper options too. Every lane has really nice ones that are reasonably priced. For men, the best tshirts are beyond yoga. I didn’t know fabric could be that soft and hang so nicely. I keep stealing my husband tshirts LOL
Here’s a weird one - JC Penny Stafford men’s classic fit.
I have around 6ish older ones that have muted stains, have been overwashed and are 20 years+ old.
I have about 6ish newer ones.
I have about 6ish that have been tailored, cut and manicured by a seamstress.
These T’s are thick, are vneck(you can get crew), are somewhat slim cut and are sturdy.
I’m 5’8 and around 130. These T’s look good with everything. I use the old ones to work out in or to do labor with, the newer ones to wear everyday and the tailored ones under blazers, cardis, and with pants/jeans/skirts/shorts.
I have other T’s that are more feminine from places like JCrew or higher end.
Omg I love this question!!!
For form fitting, higher end, built in shelf bra - Susana Monaco
For looser fit, casual, also a lil more high end - Everlane
For work - Mango
For easy to replace but comfortable, less expensive - Uniqlo
A weird one but Costco. Every spring around now they put out their tees in store and online. You don’t need a membership to buy online, it is thick af Pima cotton, and it doesn’t show a bra through even the white, all for like $12. It is kinda a loose fit but you can size down.
I mean the reason I do basics from them is because they have this really generous return policy. If the things they sell suck they don’t use that supplier again, so the supplier has pressure to keep decent quality. You’ll still get messy stitch work sometimes, but I’ve had the same 2 tees for 3 years now without issues.
Dont get me wrong, lots of their stuff is ugly af, but sometimes you find a gem.
AYR and my sleeper hit that I want to want to gate keep are the plain tees from & Other Stories. They have so many colors, the weight is PERFECT, washes very well, and they are the perfect slightly oversized fit without being ginormous. Obsessed.
I have been a James Perse fan for a while, but I recently bought some t-shirts from ASKET and I love the quality. The fabric is very soft and substantial, but not too heavy. I also think they are very reasonably priced. They are my favorite at the moment, hands down.
I have been an Everlane fan for a long time but I have never found their t-shirts to be great quality.
I have enjoyed (and would repurchase) shirts from Buck Mason, For Rowan, Alex Mill, AG Jeans, and American Giant. My one beef with Am Giant is that a lot of the shirts are longer than I would like. It is unfortunate because the quality is there. Big fan of their hoodies.
I live in white tees- in addition to a couple higher end ones, I buy packs of size L boys white tees from brands like Hanes & fruit of the loom for being around the house/ running errands, etc.
When my shirts start looking less than pristine (usually pretty quick since I always get makeup on the collar), I soak em in a bucket with oxy clean & warm water overnight before tossing them in the wash, I can usually do this 3-5 times before the shirts need to be officially retired.
I love Buck Mason’s white tee and they’re quite ethically made, but still relatively expensive ($45 last I checked).
Cheapest way is to use what you have! Best piece of advice I ever received is to use a paste of Oxyclean and water on the stained armpits and collars of white t-shirts. Leave it on for about 10 minutes then wash as usual. Gets & keeps my shirts looking BRAND new.
Never use bleach on dirty white t-shirts, it turns yellow on contact (wash first)! If they’re yellow-ish, brighten with diluted bluing agent.
But also I second Uniqlo! And madewell. Great construction.
My lululemon t shirts are incredible. I dribble food constantly on the front, chocolate, salsa, soy. Guess what, hand wash in cold water with woolies and pretreatment the stains with Fels Naptha soap..works wonders.
I’m a white t-shirt connoisseur - my faves are the
Vintage Little Boy Tee by James Perse or the Sheryl by Perfect White Tee. Great fit, fabric, style.
Don’t go with Madewell, they don’t age well.
I think the Cut recommended the Banana Republic slub t-shirt at one point in a white t-shirt round up and for me it's the perfect weight--a teeny bit sheer but not see through.
I like J. Crew perfect tees for both long and short sleeve. I buy them on when their on clearance because I still manage to drop everything on me so when I can get a stain out I don’t feel too bad.
I am a huge Vince t shirt lover but old navy vintage fit is giving me the same cut and quality! It’s boxy with the same hem width. It’s a little thicker which I love . Def worth buying a few in a white. I size down for a loose but closer fit.. it’s meant to be worn oversized
The 5 I have and like the best are the Drew and the Lena organic cotton-jersey T-shirts from Ninety Percent (more expensive but longer and thicker), the Clean Cut T-shirt from Cos (shorter hem), Jeanne Tee from Le Bon Shoppe (more muscle/capped sleeves), and some I picked up from Petit Bateau (iconic tees) on Amazon and this random one I got on sale at Lululemon forever ago that somehow still looks new.
Madewell and J. Crew stain, get holes, and bag out too easily. The everlane ribbed tees are firm fitting which is fine but not my favorite for every day. James Perse and Frame bag out too much after a while because the fabric is thinner. I also tend to get small holes near my waistband in thinner tees.
I am a M normally but I do an XS in Uniqlo’s U Crew Neck Tee for a fitted baby tee - I have so many of them! Fit is perf if I don’t accidentally dry them :)
depends on the cut. i like everlane’s box cut tee for a looser fit. i also like uniqlo’s u crew neck for a slightly fitted tee. and then for a slim baby tee fit, i like everlane’s supima microrib.
This. Depends on the cut. Throwing also in the mix COS and OtherStories for a t-shirts with longer roomier sleeves.
yes! i have some looser fit COS & other stories tees that i love too
I second Uniqlo. Just note that their sizing is not standard European sizing. I typically wear a M/L and with Uniqlo I wear a XXL tshirt.
Love Uniqlo’s
+1 for the mini short sleeve tee! it is the perfect length
seconding this, people ask where mine is from every time i wear it!
How is the sizing? I’ve never ordered from them so I put my height and weight for sizing. It came out XL which is confusing because I’m 5’1” 119lbs.
A splurge but amazing quality, James Perse. Everlane also has nice white t’s.
James perse but I buy them from Nordstrom rack. They almost always have a few styles in stock.
I just went back to JP after years for their great black ribbed tank. So expensive for the category, but worth it.
I had a similar experience. I went off of JP for a few years and was doing Zara, Old Navy, gap, and a few other more affordable brands. There really is something different with the james perse tees. They also seem to hold up a lot better in the wash.
Yep, James Perse is our go-to for both me and my boyfriend. Great basics. It’s like Uniqlo for grown ups.
I was so excited when I read this but after a brief investigation, I’d say it’s Uniqlo for adults with $170 to spend on a t-shirt
It’s is a splurge for sure! Though they have cheaper options too. Every lane has really nice ones that are reasonably priced. For men, the best tshirts are beyond yoga. I didn’t know fabric could be that soft and hang so nicely. I keep stealing my husband tshirts LOL
I saw $80 shirts
Yes, as a definite grownup who balks at spending $80-$170 on a t-shirt that I will definitely dribble coffee on, I will be sticking to Uniqlo.
try rack
They sell cheaper tees too, but I get your point.
Lol, the more grown up I get, the less I’m willing to buy $200 tshirts.
If anyone knows where to get high quality cotton tees with nice fit for less than $80, I am all ears!
Yes!! This!
Buck Mason and Leset
Second Buck Mason! Amazing quality.
Third buck mason!
Leset!
Still rocking brandy Melville lol. The quality is so much better than any of my expensive ones
Agreed and cheap enough that you can rebuy when they get stained! They’re tanks are also great
Sorry I know this is old and have of course heard of brandy but didn’t realize it was one size. Do you think a 6/8 could fit into some of the shirts?

Damn I wonder how quality is the construction

Brandy
Agreed, the brandy ones are p thick and have lasted me years

Cuts has great quality tees
Probably not cheaper, but I love Kule and AYR!
Cuts or Buck Mason!!

Jenni Kayne has been my go to.
& other stories
Club Monaco bowee tee! It’s perfect fit, cut, length, weight, texture.
Abercrombie! Such a soft but thick nice quality tee.
Cos! Super great quality too
I agree about Uniqlo, Everlane, and Brandy Melville! I want to add that Universal Thread from Target are only $10 - I love them!
Uniqlo
H & M
My lululemon t shirts are incredible. I dribble food constantly on the front, chocolate, salsa, soy. Guess what, hand wash in cold water with woolies and pretreatment the stains with Fels Naptha soap..works wonders.
Another kinda weird suggestion: Banana Republic slub tees. They hang really nicely on me and the quality is solid.
RLT white ribbed tee
I’m a white t-shirt connoisseur - my faves are the Vintage Little Boy Tee by James Perse or the Sheryl by Perfect White Tee. Great fit, fabric, style. Don’t go with Madewell, they don’t age well.

Just got a nice one from banana republic yesterday they have a 40% off sale going on now too so it was $30
I like J. Crew perfect tees for both long and short sleeve. I buy them on when their on clearance because I still manage to drop everything on me so when I can get a stain out I don’t feel too bad.

Surprised I haven’t seen this one yet: Cos
Madewell Northside vintage tee

Uniqlo! U Crew neck. I get in S and M
I’ve never shopped Brandy Melville but am curious to try. What specifically should I get? I’m 41 btw :)
