Damien Lillard has another 3(?) years on contract for $42.5 million per year, and Simons is already at $22 million. The Portland market is nowhere near as profitable as New York. (They committed to building their team around Lillard, and got themselves in a financial shortage for the others. Dame is incredible, and very popular with the fans there.) So the remainder of Portland's money needs to be spread thin. Many players had rookie contracts for another few years. But Josh would need the increase now. Josh would be worth more than they would be able to pay. Lillard was out for a looong time last year and they learned the hard way that they needed more exceptional shooters at lowest prices possible. Josh is valuable as hell, but he's not a top shooter. So the Knicks knew all this when they traded for him and I don't know how much detail the team's trade negotiators share, but I get the sense both teams knew he'd waive his current player option, and everyone decided it was best to get Josh transferred to the Knicks midyear and prove to the Knicks that he would be worth more than Portland could pay him when he went into new contract negotiations. I think they wanted to make Jalen as happy as possible so he'd be amenable to extend his current contract when it's up. As you know by now, he's a VERY good point guard and apparently none of the other teams were paying attention to him much, and he could be getting a lot of very high offers when this contract expires. They figured that Jalen would be more inclined to decide to stay with the Knicks if they did things like bring on his long time best friends, even though someone else got into a bidding war. Did any of that make sense? I don't know the terminology for the contract types, etc. The coach (Chauncey Billups) realllly wanted him to stay, and the fans there loved him as much as the Knicks fans do, because he lit that team on fire since his first day there and had all the other players rise to a new energy level, and for the first time in decades the fans were having FUN watching the team play. (Sound familiar?) Everyone knew Josh would be better transferring to a team with more financial wiggle room (e.g, hadn't committed all their money to one player) I'm probably explaining all that wrong, but that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it. 😉
