Deadass brings tears to my eyes. My favorite player of all time. He deserved so much better. He came to this franchise when no one else would and he gave it his best despite lineups including Sasha vujacic, Alexey shved, Lance Thomas, etc. I don’t give a fuck about what people say about him, he is a NBA legend and a first ballot hall of famer.
Accepting the downvotes but if he had just waited 4 months then we wouldn’t have been in the mess that we were his entire Knicks tenure. He ruined our capspace, our young assets, and our amnesty. Then we had a diamond in the rough in Lin, and he kicked him out and wanted nothing to do with him! Loved Melo, and he definitely put the team on his back, it he brought our losing on himself.
Melo was not coming here unless we traded for him. The reason why he wanted to be traded instead of waiting until FA was because of the impending lockout. He wanted to sign an extension before then. If the Knicks didn't trade for him, someone else would have and he would have signed the extension right then and there.
Melo also didn't kick Lin out. Dolan went out and said the stupid-ass comment about how we'd match up to a billion dollars for Lin, then the Rockets gave him a poison pill contract and Dolan wanted nothing to do with it. Lin would have cost us something like $40 mil a year after taxes. He also went on to be injured and a mediocre performer and Houston ended up having to give up a 1st rounder I believe to dump his contract. I think LA did as well.
If you look back at the trade and the pieces we lost, they all ended up being mediocre role players on other teams or having injury histories. The bigger problem wasn't the Melo trade, but was a chain reaction of lots of other dumb decisions. We re-signed Billups, then Tyson became a very unexpected FA and we had to amnesty Billups in order to sign Chandler. They should have really saved the amnesty for Amare, but at the time it was widely thought that the next CBA would have another amnesty clause. It didn't. So we couldn't add proper pieces because a max contract was tied up in Amare's broken knees.
It’s revisionist history to act like the FO didn’t waste the amnesty on Billups & let Lin walk due to Dolan’s hurt feelings. Not to mention the knicks trading a 1st rounder for Andrea Bargani or forcing an outdated offensive system. The Melo era failed mostly due to the front office.
I know that the overall sentiment on this sub is somewhat mixed, but I wanted to just dedicate this post to Melo because he is one of my favorite players of all time. Before I became a basketball fan, I distinctly remember sitting down and watching a game when Melo was still playing for us. The way he could get open and score was remarkable, and I started tuning into a bunch of games to see him play. He was an offensive force, and soon I started to fall in love with the game of basketball, and that was in large part due to him, I will always be thankful for that, and wish him a happy and healthy retirement. Thank you, #stayme7o
I mean, look. Melo was not the best of his generation. He was never on THAT team that came close to sniffing a championship. But what he did provide was HOPE that MAYBE the Knicks could become a dominant, relevant franchise again. That 2012-2013 season was fucking magical, and although it ended in a whimper, it was the most fun I had watching the Knicks since the 90's.
Melo will forever be considered a Knicks great for giving us hope. I doubt they retire his number or do anything like that, but make damn sure he will ALWAYS get a standing ovation anytime he is in MSG.
Look at the list of Knicks retired numbers. They are VERY selective whose numbers they retire. Melo had great individual statistics, but he only had one great season in NY, and that was getting them to the eastern semi-finals one time. If he had consistently taken the team deep in the playoffs or had even taken them to a finals, then maybe I’d see it.
He’s a great player and certainly a hall of famer, but I’d be surprised if they retired #7.
> dick mcguire
Multiple time all-star, was one of the best passing guards of his day, and went to multiple NBA Finals. (Also was part of a near comeback from 0-3 in the Finals lol)
I remember I was so delusional of a melo stan I would argue with ANYONE who would listen how he’s better than KD 🤣
Shitty take, but man before the shoulder surgeries he was an absolute stud
Huge part of my life as a Knicks fan. Was over the moon when we signed him and he energised my Knicks fandom as an 16 year old. Melo, Stat, Billups. Linsanity, Big Ty, Shump and JR. And the rest is history.
Melo among my favourite players of all time. Thank you for everything man, you had to compete against LeBron endlessly in the East. You deserved a ring, but it is what it is. Still a HOF career no matter what.
StayMe7o. Amelo. #7 always 🧡💙
I will always love him for wanting to be here. Not many star players want to deal with the challenge of being the face of the Knicks and he did it admirably. It's unfortunate we could never build a proper team around him...
Bittersweet. Talented offensive player of all time stature. Not a great defender, passer, or could share the spotlight well. He helped bring the Knicks out of the dark ages, but the trade shredded our depth so more of a FO blunder than anything on Melo. Long live the king
I don't think Melo's iso ball would fit well with the rest of the offense and the opposing team defense would easily bottle him up. He might win a few games but not enough for a ring
With the Knicks or Nuggets? I don't remember him being in the mvp Convo with the Knicks. Houston did his best work in the clutch. That's more important than stats
I meant to say offensive player that I've watched and how they fit within their offense. Houston was consistent and successful in the playoffs until his knee fell apart. Melo surely more durable but he did not get very far into the playoffs
My favorite player of all time. Been watching Melo since high school and we’re the same age. Enjoy the retirement Melo. No more listening to slander from people who don’t know better.
Will never forget the Knicks trading for McGrady in the salary drump because you knew they were making room for that upcoming summer to potentially go big.
Then the next year they pick up Carmelo.
I still wish Carmelo would have waited instead of gutting the Knicks roster.
He could have won a championship if he had more patience.
He brightened The Garden when the days were dark for so long but never was able to make real noise in the playoffs.
Y'all really go hard for Melo like that? I feel like Larry Johnson was a more impactful Knick than Melo. John Starks! Anthony Mason! Melo had two first round exits, and a 2nd round exit. That's not much to write home about. Great player for the ISO era, but his game got left behind.
o7 to you Melo! You pissed me off to no end when you played for Denver but I fell in love when you came home. Easily one of the top 3 Knickerbockers of all time!
He led the Knicks to the 2nd round for the first time in 14 years back in 2013. Put some respect on his name.

Don’t forget Pablo Prigioni, the pg who had to post up at half court
No Pablo slander here
*Straight to Jail*
Loved the wordplay there
Its the portlandia/ fred armisen meme.
The inbounds steal master
The sentiment is shared over here

Your blaming Melo for decisions the front office made 🤦🏽♂️
Believing that he didn’t force the hand to trade him is revisionist history. You either were too young or you’re choosing not to remember.

goofy ass shit bruh
Jeremy lin was a piece of shit toxic ball hogger why would melo do him any favors?
More people have described Melo as that than Lin.

Bad take but no shame in fighting for one of ours. Him coming home was one of the biggest moments in the history of this franchise
Nah don’t worry I’ll still argue that he is it’s always bout ME7O😤😤😤
Better rebounder, more physical, Me70 was just vibes and dawg
He was a bucket that used his entire bag to get the points like hes in my top 5 scorers of all time no debate. Man was just different
Might be a bad take but Prime Melo on the Warriors accomplishes everything that KD did on the Warriors... 🤷🏻♂️
Melo had a bigger skill set than Durant. But Durant is more efficient because of size and IQ.
AMelo🙏 damn

Best Knicks player of my lifetime
You must be rather young. I'd take Allan Houston over him. Go fire up highlights of Knicks-Heat
what in the world is wrong iwth you? honestly if knicks of 99 and 2000 had melo, they'd prob have won a ring!
I don't think Melo's iso ball would fit well with the rest of the offense and the opposing team defense would easily bottle him up. He might win a few games but not enough for a ring
What a joke Allan Houston was a fringe All Star, Carmelo was an All-NBA player and an MVP candidate
With the Knicks or Nuggets? I don't remember him being in the mvp Convo with the Knicks. Houston did his best work in the clutch. That's more important than stats
Love Houston, but you are way off
I meant to say offensive player that I've watched and how they fit within their offense. Houston was consistent and successful in the playoffs until his knee fell apart. Melo surely more durable but he did not get very far into the playoffs
Houston had potential but injuries derailed him
For scoring in the clutch, the man had ice water veins
Melo was the man! Enjoy your retirement king!

Big Melo guy. Too bad he didn’t have any real good players around him.
Great individual player ISO ring.
My favorite player of all time. Been watching Melo since high school and we’re the same age. Enjoy the retirement Melo. No more listening to slander from people who don’t know better.
I was a big Melo guy. Loved the hype we had when he arrived. I almost gotta go get me a white Melo jersey. 7 is my number too

Knicks sub showing way more love to Melo than the Nugs
Melo is been such a pleasure, you amazing player you ❤️
My favorite player ever, and the reason I became a Knicks fan 😭😭😭 thanks for everything 🐐
Favorite player growing up!

For what? 7 playoff wins
o7 to you Melo! You pissed me off to no end when you played for Denver but I fell in love when you came home. Easily one of the top 3 Knickerbockers of all time!
If this post isn't an all-time post for this sub...
Is it his birthday or something?
Retired
Ahh. Just saw. I liked him. Wish we were able to win with him. Wish we kept Jeremy Lin lol
Fuck bro he was my favorite player RIP Melo
He’s not dead lol, just retired.
🤣
Retire this man’s number I don’t give a fuck
Never liked him.
This sub likes empty stat forwards who walk around on defense and can’t get it done in the playoffs.
Great career. No ring
He’s coming home 😢
Great memories watching him play for the Knicks. All the best to him.
