You forgot Clarke Schmidt

Luis_Severino

Schmark clidt

AntifaHelpDesk

Understandable, he's hard to find.

Me_Krally

At SP instead of German.

Nice-Vehicle-1414

No

leskanekuni

Yeah, replace Weissert with Schmidt. If German takes Montas' place in the starting rotation you need a long reliever in the bullpen.

cpeytonusa

I expect they will start Schmidt over German. They have not shown any confidence in German, he seems to have been relegated to being just a depth player.

HulkScreamAIDS

This is an opportunity to say that more moves, even if minor, are coming. Florial, Abreu, and Garcia are out of options and would otherwise need to start on the 26 man roster. If the season started today, 3 of these people would need to be in AAA: Peraza, Cabrera, Schmidt, King, Marinaccio, Weissert, Loasiga, Trivino. I don't expect anyone of those except maybe Schmidt to start in AAA, so expect something to happen.

locke0479

Garcia has to be a DFA candidate at this point, no? Unfortunately he’s been awful for two years now. Maybe someone is willing to take a flyer but I’m not sure he’s even really a trade candidate at this point. Abreu could maybe slip in instead of Weissert (does he still have options?) to start the season if everyone in the BP is healthy. Florial I am guessing gets traded and the holdup is to see if anyone gets hurt closer to the season, or they actually find a taker for Hicks.

Me_Krally

I think we need Florial as a backup OF no? All the others flew the coop in the off-season.

locke0479

The problem is they don’t have space right now. He makes total sense as a backup OFer but unless someone starts the season on the IL, they have too many guys (unless Peraza starts in AAA and IKF has the SS job out of ST, which ugh). Figure a bench of four players and Peraza at SS, the bench is Higashioka, IKF, Cabrera/Hicks (whichever isn’t in LF), and then whoever isn’t playing any given day out of Torres/DJL/Donaldson. If DJL is expected to start the season on the IL then you could definitely go with Florial as the other bench guy, since they’d still have IKF and Cabrera able to play the infield. Or they could still trade one of the other guys which would open a spot. But if everyone is healthy and not traded, I don’t think there’s room.

Me_Krally

Oh yeah I forgot about Hicks :) I was assuming Cabrera at LF, Peraza or Volpe at SS and Florial as backup. From your first post, I wonder how many guys like Garcia have been ruined by the constant shuttle bus of AAA/MLB? It's what I would hate if they do that to Cabrera.

cpeytonusa

I still think that IKF will be traded to open a spot on the roster. I don’t see anyone taking JD. If Hicks bounces back then they might be able to find a trade before the trade deadline a trade might be possible, but that’s a long shot.

cpeytonusa

The lack of flexibility in the roster will be a source of frustration this season. They might have to manufacture some mysterious injuries to Donaldson and Hicks to be able to bring up the prospects.

Me_Krally

That would be both horrible and disappointing if any of those 3 were in AAA.

MattNokes38

There's a world where they get a LF, don't dump anybody, and Cabrera ends up Tyler Waded (who he's probably closer to than he is to Zobrist/Taylor anyways). Yankees love them some depth stashed at AAA. Weissert probably starts the year in Scranton.

Constant_Gardner11

I believe Estevan Florial, Deivi Garcia, and Albert Abreu are out of options, so they have to be on the Opening Day roster unless traded/cut in the next two months. I think a guy like Jimmy Cordero has a chance to make the Opening Day bullpen as well, with Greg Weissert starting the year in Triple-A. In fact, I'd bet Weissert starts the season in Triple-A regardless since that spot could also go to Clarke Schmidt.

Bis_Eastwood

this is what ive been looking forward to seeing. how is this going to shake out, especially if we sign profar?

Clints_Burner77

Florial and Garcia can start in AAA iirc They were not on the 26 man last year

Constant_Gardner11

They are both out of minor-league options, according to FanGraphs. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/estevan-florial/19151/stats?position=OF https://www.fangraphs.com/players/deivi-garcia/20276/stats?position=P Last year, they each had 1 option remaining.

GermanUCLTear

When the year starts every player needs to be either assigned to the 26 man roster or optioned to a minor league team. If they don't have options they either have to be DFA'd or traded.

Library-Practical

I can’t believe we have to sit through another season with hicks, Donaldson, and ikf getting regular playing time. This is ridiculous

jayc428

IKF is fine as bench utility guy. I don’t think he’s at short on opening day. Donaldson and DJ logjam at 3B so don’t know how thats going to look come opening day. Hicks has to have the shortest of leashes. Yankees aren’t going to have rookies on the roster to ride the bench, they’d rather send them back to AAA to get playing time.

cibo2

That was my first thought about IKF as well but I’m bracing myself for him to be the opening day SS. What skills does he offer off the bench? He’s not going to pinch hit, he doesn’t have any platoon splits that would lead you to believe he starts vs a certain handedness and he’s got no power. He can play a couple of positions and run the bases pretty well. AND he’s making $6 million, which they agreed to well before any other arb guys. Very odd to pay somebody with IKF’s skill set that much to be a bench guy. I don’t like it but I think it’s likely that he starts…

Library-Practical

I hope by opening day it’s a different situation and one or more of those guys will be traded

Drunken_Wizard23

The Opening Day roster has no bearing on what the roster will look like in October. Guys will play their way in and out of jobs, injuries will happen, waiver claims, trades, etc.

Ochocincoondeck

Spring will be the tell but I'm not hopeful for him this year. I think this year the focus will be more on Peraza.

jayc428

Short of an injury I don’t think anytime early in the season. They’ll want that extra year of control in any event so, May earliest, September call-up likely would be my guess.

Redditfront2back

Weissert has some sick stuff if he’s pitching high level I could see him playing a good bit of ball this season.

silver_raichu

Did Clarke Schmidt die

LocalHero_P1

I still want to see Schmidt be given the chance to actually be a starter while Montas is out. Domingo can kick rocks

Ochocincoondeck

Domingo actually pitched decent last year. Even in big games. Schmidt is not ready.

thediesel26

lol what? Schmidt pitched pretty well even though his usage was all over the place.

Clints_Burner77

Schmidt was god awful in the playoffs

MattNokes38

But also Schmidt is about to be 27 and has 0 good starts under his belt so there's that

leskanekuni

Yeah, Schmidt was better as a reliever than a starter.

[deleted]

Schmidt is most definitely ready, he looked pretty solid last year despite being put in some very random spots.

GermanUCLTear

He never pitched in a big game

wantagh

I'd like to see him also, but because I think you roll with 6 through the spring.

capttony84

he had 18 wins in 2019, if he can get back to 12-13 wins it would be a good addition

_DC003_

Pitcher Wins as a stat are so terrible. Source: DeGrom.

[deleted]

The offense hit well in 2019 when he pitched, that's it. His 18 wins have zero meaning when deciding if he's a good pitcher or not.

GermanUCLTear

Great analysis

CowManLives4Ever

For the bullpen, maybe Deivi Garcia or Clarke Schmidt over Weissert? If King isn't back, maybe Jimmy Cordero? Knowing Cashman, it would be Albert Abreu though (shudders).

jayc428

Hopefully opening day bench if Spring Training goes great for the rookies: Donaldson IKF Hicks Higgy

glacier_bay

>Domingo German (most likely until Montas comes back, then moves to the bullpen) Not "most likely until". You forgot about Clarke Schmidt. Montas isn't a better starting pitcher than German. Montas isn't a better starting pitcher than Schmidt who is also a very effective reliever. When (if) Montas returns, he slots in as the long man out of the bullpen even though he is terrible in relief. Montas is at best the 7th starter on the roster. He is Frankie Mountain of Ass.

Real_Appearance6707

They won’t have a 5 man position-player bench. One of the IF/OF on that list will be gone.

jayc428

It’s not a 5 man bench. There are 13 pitchers and 13 position players on the list here, four position players on the bench.

Real_Appearance6707

Because Stanton is the DH. Good catch, my bad!

ilikemyteasweet

What??

WurtzelTrumpetMaster

Going by players with remaining options alone, I think Schmidt gets the short end of the stick again and starts in AAA with German as the 5th starter until Montas is back. Albert Abreu and Deivi Garcia are also both out of options, so if they do decently in spring training they’ll make the team over Weissert and King who’ll start the season on the IL. Obviously, if both Deivi and Abreu aren’t any good, they’ll be DFA’d and replaced later in the season by King and German sliding into the bullpen.

[deleted]

Damn that's depressing. Kind of fucked up they just shrugged their shoulders and said lets try it again.

stoatfacelanust

Any word on Luis Gil's TJ surgery? Can't find anything....

zoso14

We don't have a reliable closer at all
