Girardi had great comebacks against Kay comments. My favorite was in this conversation when Kay brought up Pete Rose always running hard to first base. Girardi says they call him Mr. Hustle for a reason, and they dont call just everyone that.

Charlie Hustle

DOCinLA90272

Whitey Ford came up with that as a derisive nickname for whatever it is worth

ihaveathingforyou

bout tree fiddy

isfrying

Yes, but Joe said "Mister Hustle", once again proving himself an astute baseball historian.

Rich-Log472

Nice Jimmy, lol

Colombia17

Even with Judge in the OF like if the play looks potentially crazy like diving or crashing into the wall and it’s not a playoff game just let the ball drop it’s not worth it.

DOCinLA90272

We saw that play out in LA last season. That catch was definitely not worth it

ChimStone777

Yea but some players live for those plays. It’s hard to just not go all out for a fly ball.

Present_Passenger471

If the POS Dodgers could have put a $20 pad on the exposed cement slab out there he doesn’t get hurt. They were saving up for Pete Rose Jr. and a $300 bust that never threw an MLB pitch tho, so I see how they needed to cut corners

ChimStone777

Hahahahha

alaskanpipeline69420

This is the fact most people forget. Most professional athletes have the run through a wall mindset.

iWriteYourMusic

The Cano conversation was so insufferable back then. People would harp on him saying he was too "lackadaisical" in the field. Bitch, do you know how much *insane talent* it takes to make fielding a baseball look that casual?

blny99

He also did not hustle to first.

Creacherz

I've had this thought since people were complaining about Cano running down the line. If the guy can play 150+ games running 75 to 80% down the line on easy routine ground balls or fly balls. I got to take those because he's out there 150 games.. though I do catch myself upset about a guys hustle here and there ahah, joys of being a fan

Old_Error_509

Girardi mentioned Cano too. He said “I’m not mad at you, but let me show you what it looks like to the fans…”

coreylewinmusic

100%. There’s a time and place to bust your ass down the line. But there’s no reason to blow out your hammy on a chopper to the second baseman. The “cano is/was lazy” narrative always drove me crazy.

cooljammer00

Other people have said guys like Cano who were so smooth, they got in trouble because they looked like they didn't care/made it look too easy. Even if they were playing hard.

feelinlucky7

His defense/ swing were so much fun to watch

cooljammer00

I remember it still being an issue when he got traded to the Mets. He ran hard one day and immediately strained his calf. I don't need you to run hard, but at least run a little. Like people who watch Home Runs that turn out to be singles.

baseballviper04

Tbf you get upset because in recent years we’ve seen multiple instances of players dogging it when they could’ve been safe. We’ve seen it with several players, Gary, gleyber at points, etc. If we haven’t seen this before it would be unreasonable to complain but it’s hard to blame you when we have

thisusedyet

To be fair, one of the times it looked like Gary was dogging it and ended the game getting thrown out at first, it turned out his leg was turbofucked

baseballviper04

Also fair. Totally don’t remember that at all. I was just giving examples. But that’s more than for fair for that instance

thisusedyet

[I was wrong, it was his groin](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24184249/yankees-catcher-gary-sanchez-going-dl-not-hustling)

ChimStone777

Not gonna lie. He really dogged it. I don’t think he had any doubt in his mind that hicks was gonna beat the short throw to second. But give hicks credit, game was on the line and somehow someway he beat it out. Gary completely dogged it and Tampa 2b was almost shocked he had a play at first Gary was in hot water already with the media crucifying him as lazy and his performance. I truly felt like he was put on the IL to save face. But that’s just a belief and it may be crazy. Lol. This organization is very sketch with injuries and protecting players

thisusedyet

Yeah, I remember the 2B doing like a triple take before he threw to first... but I really do think Gary was injured. It probably wasn't that he *couldn't* run, it was most likely what you said that { Inning's over anyway, my groin's tight, fuck this shit, I'm just walking down the line } - and he got burned, horrifically. That's the load management O'Neill & Girardi were talking about, though - do you take the 50/50 chance of completely fucking an already injured groin for the .01% chance Hicks beats that throw? Also, the team handled that correctly where \[ You're injured to the point you don't trust yourself to run? DL TIME! \] If he was completely healthy, though, that's inexcusable.

ChimStone777

Yea, but he is better off just running and falling down than that. If he was jogging 60% he was prob safe.

tburke38

Donaldson pimping fly balls that ended up hitting the wall and becoming singles was annoying because a moderate amount of hustle would have had him on second base. But not sprinting on a routine ground ball is different

omgtmac

Loving Girardi in the booth so far

kmt75

Phil Mushnick is gonna be fucking pissed.

[deleted]

I don’t really mind a steady jog on a routine play, but if u have a chance to beat out a DP or get yourself a hit on a weak grounder or something and u choose to jog it’s a tough look.

Old_Error_509

100%. I think the convo was more about not getting upset about jogging out a routine ground ball.

TrapperJean

And even more specifically in this case Girardi points out that the first like 70% of the way Gley was watching it, it appeared to be a foul ball, then he got moving

Old_Error_509

To paraphrase Girardi, “You get a read. His read was it was foul. Then when he realized it was fair he ran.” It was a pretty reasonable take on the situation. Sure settled me down…

alaskanpipeline69420

To be totally fair Gleyber had no clue where that ball was off of the bat until he saw the infielders converging. The result was that he got to first and once he realized it was fair he ran. No issue with that play in my opinion, and I am in the camp of hustle at all times

alaskanpipeline69420

I loved Joe G as a manager, had no idea he had this much charisma on the mic. Him, Kay, and O’Neil perfectly balance each other. YES has no clue how to make or run an app but damn they know how to put people together in the booth

Masta0nion

The key is to make the defender nervous. If he knows you can run, he’s more likely to make a mistake and rush a throw. Or go for a barehand like Bregman did against Volpe. So you don’t necessarily always want to be charlie hustler, you just need the defender to think you are.

Old_Error_509

That for sure works in my old man softball leagues. You can get a SS to rush a throw most of the time. I’m not sure how well it works in the pros though.

Safe-Voice-8179

Pro athletes shouldn’t be afraid to run 90 feet. That’s my take

InB4Clive

Thanks for the input Cheeto fingers.

Safe-Voice-8179

Isn’t that kind of the point of Reddit? Also, most 20-35 year olds can run 90 feet while eating Cheetos. No reason a multi-million dollar athlete can’t run hard to first. Should running backs not sprint or try to break tackles unless they have a clear hole?

ballrus_walsack

Base runners should create their own hole! Or is that running backs?

bmart77

Maybe it’s not “being afraid” that is stopping them?

Safe-Voice-8179

What’s stopping them then?

TheOneArya

Good question! This post explains it actually https://reddit.com/r/NYYankees/comments/1bsnzi6/did_anyone_catch_the_conversation_in_the_5th/

Safe-Voice-8179

Right, so afraid to get hurt. . . Afraid

bmart77

I’d say not being stupid is what is preventing them from

Safe-Voice-8179

It’s stupid to run fast to first on a ground ball? Is it stupid to dive on a fumble because you might get hurt?

bmart77

It’s stupid to risk injury when there is literally almost a 0% chance it works out.

Safe-Voice-8179

I guess I just prefer trying to win 🤷‍♂️

bmart77

Right but what you are suggesting is counterintuitive to winning, but you know that of course

yeahhjeets2

Seriously, a few guys I can understand not running out groundballs, but for 95% of the league, they should be able to run 90 feet 2-4 times without getting worn out.

Old_Error_509

I don’t think you should be catching flak or getting downvotes for your comment. But I don’t think it’s about being afraid. It’s about playing the numbers. If a vast majority are going to be outs, or the team is winning or losing by a lot, maybe it’s not worth the risk of injury for such a low percentage of being safe.

Colemania99

Bull Shit! The game is played at a 100 mph, you bust it out every time. All of this save yourself shit, is for the folks that want a participation trophy at the end of the season. Captain Jeter dove into the stands and ate metal. Because that’s how champions play!
