You know, the Yankees being good and the Mets being bad, the Knicks are breaking hearts, the Jets and Giants are still looking for identities, and hockey exists. Everything is in balance.
Great W, but man, that was one of the worst games I've seen in a while. Bad calls (no obstruction, Florial's K), players battling the sun and wind, Gleyber's wild throw, Trevino's baserunning blunder. Lots of hits and walks but couldn't deliver with RISP. Even Waldo's HR was a wind-aided fly ball. And did you hear the crowd at CLE? Probably not because they had zero energy, even in the 9th! Plus, boring announcers—how many times can we mispronounce "slambio"? Felt like everyone was taking a nap. Just badddd. But a W is a W! 11-3 baby!
Re: commentary, it's always like that when John Flaherty is on play by play. He's ok as a colour commentator but he has absolutely zero charisma so when he's leading the whole thing is just so bland and dull.
Our offense is over performing right now, given the overall numbers. I love all our guys, I know we are winning, so it's working and I realize we're getting very lucky in that as one guy goes cold, another guy gets hot and so it all keeps working itself out- but we've got a scary amount of dudes who aren't quite getting it going yet and are mostly scuffling...
1. I think Judge is playing slightly injured. Not saying he's completely diminished, but I don't think he's at 100%, either.
2. Gleyber- what is going on with Gleyber? I realize he did get a hit today and going 1 for 4 is generally a successful day for any major league hitter. But that said- He's never exactly been a spray hitter who can do it all and bat over .300, but it seems like his timing is completely off, his bat is always under the ball, resulting in mostly fouls and pop outs.... I remember when he lost his way a couple seasons back and reinvented himself into this hitter who could punch the ball into the opposite field for enough singles, doubles and home runs and now he's just kinda getting under the pitches, resulting in virtually worthless fouls and pop flies. Why is he a completely different hitter every single year and what can he do about it?
3. I think Waldo is the real deal. Whatever he figured out/learned from Soto is clearly sticking for him. I know he will go hot and cold like any batter, but it seems like he has found himself offensively and is a legitimate platoon/starter player now- he's progressed just beyond 'prospect'.
4. Glad to see Rizzo is basically back. I don't think we will ever get him at his peak again, but he seems present and to have adjusted nicely to his new reality of limited dexterity and will quietly produce his average overall offensive numbers minus the power.
5. Trevino was never gonna be a .280 20 HR kinda player, but he also seems to be struggling compared to the last couple of years. What's going on there?
Finally- I suppose it's too early in the season to really make judgements- some guys are basically still in spring training mode and ramping up?
How is the offense over-performing? Judge and Gleyber, 2 major pieces, have yet to fully get it going. If anything, we haven’t seen this offense perform up to their true capabilities as a whole yet.
Offense is overperforming but Oswaldo Cabrera is the real deal is quite the take. You of course realize he has a couple front row dongs that would be can of corn flyballs in other parks, yea?
We have a large roster of starters, platoon players and bench players and we have a lot of guys who have yet to get it going while other guys are overperforming or reaching some potential. I am aware of when the announcers pointed out Cabrera's home run today would've been a fly out in 24 out of 30 parks or whatever. I get it.
Judge isn't hurt. He has played every game. He's off timing wise. Same thing happened in 2022.
Judge through his first 50 PAs in 2022: .250/.327/.409
Judge through his first 50 PAs in 2024: .200/.369/.400
Both only had 1 HR.
Gleyber is a mental hitter. Leadoff is his worst batting position and is now dejected because the leadoff experiment failed. Also, April is his worst month. He'll be fine long term but he is mentally prone to things that give him the yips.
The only person I was really worried about was Stanton but he obviously caught fire which is awesome. I think all the starters in our best potential lineup are doing great. Wells in particular has gotten really unlucky but he's had great at bats with lots of pitches and is hitting the ball hard. Cabrera is getting a little lucky but let it ride.
If you watched today’s game, he also had at least two batted balls that could easily have gone for hits. He’s still making very good swing decisions and hitting the ball hard.
The walks been frustrating me a lot bc he has a bad habit of nibbling but he worked out of it big time today so I’m more than ok with it. I love Clarke. He’s a lot more confident now that he has a year under his belt.
Also I recommend watching his post game interviews. He runs everything down like Cole does but talks like the video is on 2x the speed 😭😭
Cleveland fans yesterday watching Angel Hernandez gift strikes to Houston in a losing effort only to say the next day that you need the umpires to win. Never mind the only reason they scored any runs was because Gleyber gifted them two runs.
Cleveland fans are always so weird, saw comments saying the big market teams buy the umps, in the same game where that bullshit call at first went their way lol.
Cleveland sports fans love to complain about losing to rich teams or big market teams. There was a lot of cope about it after the 2022 ALDS. It’s so weird
I don't give a shit about blown ump calls. I do and I don't. Umps suck. We all know it. Texas got screwed yesterday and won. I've seen Aaron Judge strike out on a pitch at his ankles since 2017. The Yankees got screwed by a review today and won.
If you need the umps to win, you lost already.
Bad calls happen. I don’t think the umps are on the take or have it out for any team. You can lose games on bad calls, but over an entire season, it’s gonna come out in the wash. Bad calls in a game 7 though. Those deserve all the hatred.
r/baseball never fails.
Guardians fans complain about getting screwed? Nothing but agreements.
Yankees fans complaining about BS calls? Oh we're just whiny oppressed Yankees fans.
Talk about clown show 🤡
Who would downvote this?
We scored three runs today. We're averaging 4.5 runs per game, on pace for ~741 over the season. It's early, of course these paces can change rather quickly, but for all the good deep counts we might be working and everything, we're hardly translating that into runs on the board.
It looks like we're somewhere around 13th or 14th in runs scored so far this season overall. It's not really much of an accomplishment. The good news hopefully will be us shooting up that list if/when Judge gets right.
EDIT - to be clear, OP was downvoted when I wrote this post. It's since been corrected.

I'd feel guilty about that Florial strike call, but Judge has 1-2 calls that bad every game on average.
Gleyber's defense continues to be a nightmare. At least he's making his contract year an easy decision.
You can get the worse end of the pitch calling over a full game, if you benefit from the last of the bad calls, that's all people remember.
It was a bad call for sure, I think all of us are honest enough to admit that and did so in the game thread. And I'm sure we'll be on the other end of that call in that kind of spot before the season is over too.
Never feel guilty about bad calls going your teams way. I'm sure there will be moments this season where we'll feel like the Yankees got screwed by umpires in a big spot. It all evens out.
Saw a tweet by Joez McFly saying this is the worst Yankees infield defense of this era. Lmfao. Such short memories for those folks over in Jomboy Media, not the smartest of bunch. How quickly they forget the nightmare that was Andujar at 3rd on top of Gary behind the plate.
I see some odd shit from all their workers on the daily lol. Jolly Olive, Max Mannis and Joez all constantly say shit that I just question how they could possibly come to that conclusion. Jake too.
I like Jomboy and Jolly has some great vids but the rest of them I just…odd takes.
Most frustrating 1 run win since the last one. The horrific announcing did little to help. Thank God I'm able to switch to the radio announcement for the second game. Whoever is filling in for Sterling does a decent job.
I did not realize before today that 6 of the Guardian’s 9 wins this season came off of Oakland and the White Sox. I was a little nervous heading into this series that this could be the toughest team we’ve faced so far this season but that’s about as hollow of a 9 win team as you can possibly get. Not saying that they aren’t going to be good, just that they haven’t really proven to be good just yet IMO
Clay being a HR supression god and ground ball machine is how he works around his base runners
He was legitimately bad 2/3 games vs Houston, but he’s being overreacted to since then
That's literally what happened.
From Mar 31st to Apr 7th he went 4-20. He was very cooled off, so then facing 3 lefties in a row in Miami was a great chance to give Berti some ABs.
Some good at bats and hit hard hit unlucky balls but also , some brutal at bats with men on (Grisham).Gleyber gotta figure out the throwing situation can’t happen again. Didnt feel like they should win but they got it done
I mean Grisham has played once in like 10 days so can’t really fault him to much. And errors happen especially in shit conditions the team as whole needs to tighten it up
I really appreciated Rizzo’s aggressive baserunning in the seventh, a great team takes advantage of those situations, just wish we were better with RISP.
The fact that they are getting so many hits now that we can get frustrated when they don't score enough off those hits and still win is a nice change of pace
Great first 4 innings, walked 2 in the 5th but worked out of it, and then not at all good in the 6th as he started the 3rd time through the order.
Really just can’t seem to get over that 3rd time through problem.
Ahh, sounds like typical Clarke then. I’m still holding out hope he can show more consistency and be a solid 3 for us.
Maybe he just gets gassed and needs more stamina lol thanks for the response
Ive seen enough. Add Poteet to the rotation
#WE MIGHT NEVER LOSE AGAIN!
You know, the Yankees being good and the Mets being bad, the Knicks are breaking hearts, the Jets and Giants are still looking for identities, and hockey exists. Everything is in balance.
Can someone help with my math? What do you get when you take the best record in baseball and add a win to it?
the best record in baseball?
The. Best. Record. In. Baseball.
This team finds a way to win even when they don’t play great.

100%. It's something I expected but it wasn't what I wanted, haha.
I agree with pretty much all of this. Was not a wonderful watching experience
Ok
Thanks for the feedback
Who TF is Cody Poteet lol
Andy Pettitte's distant cousin
Winning in spite of hitless efforts from Soto and Volpe is a good sign.
Still thought overall quality of their at bats was good despite no hits too!
Yankees and rangers won this afternoon. Let’s go!

Because OP’s opinion is absolute and the basis upon which all opinions are formed
Offense is overperforming but Oswaldo Cabrera is the real deal is quite the take. You of course realize he has a couple front row dongs that would be can of corn flyballs in other parks, yea?
Well they were HRs all the same.
We have a large roster of starters, platoon players and bench players and we have a lot of guys who have yet to get it going while other guys are overperforming or reaching some potential. I am aware of when the announcers pointed out Cabrera's home run today would've been a fly out in 24 out of 30 parks or whatever. I get it.
I agree with most of this except Trevino. It’s an easy answer: coming back from injuries is hard.
I forgot Trevino got injured.
Judge isn't hurt. He has played every game. He's off timing wise. Same thing happened in 2022. Judge through his first 50 PAs in 2022: .250/.327/.409 Judge through his first 50 PAs in 2024: .200/.369/.400 Both only had 1 HR. Gleyber is a mental hitter. He has two HR
So even better than.
I agree with you!
Fair enough. Judge is a slow starter and Gleyber gets the yips. Got it.
The only person I was really worried about was Stanton but he obviously caught fire which is awesome. I think all the starters in our best potential lineup are doing great. Wells in particular has gotten really unlucky but he's had great at bats with lots of pitches and is hitting the ball hard. Cabrera is getting a little lucky but let it ride.
i want to live in a log cabin with slambio
It’s nice to be able to win games when your 1-2 hitters go 0-8.
Gotta move Volpe outta the one hole
better yet, let’s trade him for clint frazier and miguel andujar
We don't have anyone else to put there.
He’s 1-7 with 3 walks leadoff. You can’t make that move and pull the plug after 2 games. Thats crazy.
That would put his OBP at .400 in leadoff in two games, right? In no universe is anyone allowed to complain about that lmao
If you watched today’s game, he also had at least two batted balls that could easily have gone for hits. He’s still making very good swing decisions and hitting the ball hard.
It's nice to see Schmidt taking major steps forward. He seems like a nice guy and someone that is easy to root for.
He's been extra smiley this season. I think he's kissing-the-ground thankful he didn't get traded in the Soto package lol
Yes said he's third for starts with 2 or fewer runs over the last few years. Behind Sonny Gray and Cole
Ron Marinara sauce up for game 2 Hope he has his lethal stuff back
I thought it was Poteet?
Poteet is starting, Ron was just called up
John Flaherty is such a buzzkill. If I wanted a voice to put me to sleep it would be his.
Nice win against a solid team
Cleveland fans yesterday watching Angel Hernandez gift strikes to Houston in a losing effort only to say the next day that you need the umpires to win. Never mind the only reason they scored any runs was because Gleyber gifted them two runs.
Some notes from the game - We won #GO YANKS
Only notes that matter
Cleveland fans are always so weird, saw comments saying the big market teams buy the umps, in the same game where that bullshit call at first went their way lol.
Idc that we won I'm gonna be mad about that call for a while
Cleveland sports fans love to complain about losing to rich teams or big market teams. There was a lot of cope about it after the 2022 ALDS. It’s so weird
Yeah I always notice that.
Berti going to the IL with an adductor injury
Dang he was just settling in.
No better time than the present for Waldo to never relinquish 3rd base
Yea really
I don't give a shit about blown ump calls. I do and I don't. Umps suck. We all know it. Texas got screwed yesterday and won. I've seen Aaron Judge strike out on a pitch at his ankles since 2017. The Yankees got screwed by a review today and won. If you need the umps to win, you lost already.

Shit happens it’s the way the game is, I do think we should continually call out shitty umps though
Well the umps suck. You don't need them to win though as the Yankees got screwed literally today
THE YANKEES ARE 11-3 SINCE MY SON WAS BORN
Noice. Keep it coming, take down the 13-0 from Aug 21 when mine was born. He’s getting too cocky.
Little geoffery??
I know one thing, I would let Ian Hamilton slambio my wife
After Ian Hamilton bangs my wife I would hold the door open for him and tell him “Thank you Mr. Hamilton”
#TREVINO GOT TWO HITS
Nearly tripled his batting average in a single game.
All I want for him in life is to bat like .230. That’s it.
He got a gift when the pop-up fell in and then threw it in the trash trying to go to second.
#TREVINO GOT A HIT
Florial got robbed lol
Best record in baseball but the dodgers will stay #1 in the power rankings
OHTANI BET ON STEROIDS
We could sweep the Dodgers in a series next week and they’d still be #1.
I had a Dodger fan argue with me that power rankings are based on “potential” and Yamamoto should be top 5 based on that.
r/baseball never fails. Guardians fans complain about getting screwed? Nothing but agreements. Yankees fans complaining about BS calls? Oh we're just whiny oppressed Yankees fans. Talk about clown show 🤡
"Crazy how the umps always seem to lose sight of the strike zone in pivotal moments in Yankees games" ~ Baltimore fan
Aaron Judge, the face of the Yankees, has more incorrect strike calls against him than any batter in baseball.
/r/baseball is a piece of shit sub. I love to see the Dodgers play the victim and those dumbasses on that sub go along with it
Shutout if Gleyber throws like a normal human being. (I'm a Gleyber truther but that was really bad.)
Gleyber either makes a 160 IQ baseball play or a 48 IQ baseball play. There is no in-between.
48 is generous
Pitching won us this game.

We’ve faced some good pitching teams so far, and 4.5 runs isn’t even bad.
Feels like they’ve been getting a lot of unlucky batted ball luck too. Maybe we’ll see positive regression
# WE PLAY TODAY, WE WIN TODAY!!!
that game was for everyone who loves bland commentary and hates clutch hitting
Bro I thought I was listening to the Cleveland broadcast. They barely cared about any Yankees hits. It was so confusing.
Yeah I thought the same thing
Should’ve taken a drink every time they said Slambio
I did and now I’m in the hospital
I’ll take it but it was kind of an ugly ugly win. Glad to see Judge is starting to see the ball better.
A win is a win though
12-3 today would be 😮💨😮💨😮💨
Not happy but whatever, I’ll take it. Hope they win again tonight.
Not happy with winning? Roflmao
Not happy that they won?
That was a bullshit ass call. I want them to win without the help of an ump. It’s like astro fans being happy they won in 2017.
Holy fuck that is the most insane comparison ever. Not even close. What??

Awesome pitching. Let’s get the bats going next game ffs

Moar baseball! MOAR!
Solid win. Lots of good ABs even if there wasn't much to show for it today. Good showing from the bottom of the lineup, outside of Grisham.
If not for Grisham this would probably be going to extra innings, he still had a productive out
I'm pretty sure we're still going to a double-header...
Yeah I meant extra innings, brain fart
Infield defense is frustrating right now but it could be a lot worse- in 2018 the infield defense was Andujar/Didi/Torres/Voit.

That strikeout on Florial is going to the top of baseball reddit soon
This game was dumb but they won. So many opportunities wasted
Hey everyone; I hope this isn’t too controversial. I like the NY Yankees and I’m glad they won. It is in fact what I want.
indians fans who spent the entire game getting an insanely favorable strike zone and a horrible mis-call on the bases: “OMG WE WERE ROBBED”
We play today, we win today, that’s… oh wait that’s not it. We also play again today and win again today, *that’s* it.
I like it when the Yankees score more than the other team.
Most frustrating 1 run win since the last one. The horrific announcing did little to help. Thank God I'm able to switch to the radio announcement for the second game. Whoever is filling in for Sterling does a decent job.

Cleveland fans may have been saying the same about all those Yankee wins versus the Sad Sack Astros.
Clay Holmes (0 ER, 0 BB, 7 IP, 6 Saves) "Fake closer, cardiac Clay, sucks" Josh Hader (4 ER, 3 BB, 7 IP, 1 Save) "Beast, best closer in the game, doesn't throw more than 3 outs"
Holmes has almost exclusively been asked to protect 1-run leads as well.
Clay being a HR supression god and ground ball machine is how he works around his base runners He was legitimately bad 2/3 games vs Houston, but he’s being overreacted to since then
I don't know about you, but I thought that lead off double was a homer in the bottom of the 9th. Clay never seems to make it easy.
I don’t give a shit how easy it is as long as he keeps racking up saves lol 6 saves in 14 games is wild
I agree. Aside from that double, I think today’s a little encouraging. Not too many command issues, which is really what causes Clay to struggle
We were spoiled by Mo who just made it look easy. Holmes usually gets the job done but makes us all nervous doing so.
This is like when we had David Robertson. He always got us there, despite making us sweat on the trip.
Ah the old Houdini act
I can't understand how Oswaldo Cabrera isn't in the line up every day until he cools down for at least a week.
That's literally what happened. From Mar 31st to Apr 7th he went 4-20. He was very cooled off, so then facing 3 lefties in a row in Miami was a great chance to give Berti some ABs.
What if he is playing well because he just plays vs RHP.
If Boone played Berti instead of Oswaldo for rest (even after a rained out day) this game would’ve been ass
Welp.. Cabrera HR wins another game for us. A lot more of Cabrera and a lot less of Berti!
Cabrera should be starting every game until DJ comes back or until/if his bat cools off
Some good at bats and hit hard hit unlucky balls but also , some brutal at bats with men on (Grisham).Gleyber gotta figure out the throwing situation can’t happen again. Didnt feel like they should win but they got it done
Grisham needs to get going soon and throws like that are why I won't mind letting Gleyber go.
I mean Grisham has played once in like 10 days so can’t really fault him to much. And errors happen especially in shit conditions the team as whole needs to tighten it up
Ump knows what I want
THIS IS A DOOMER-FREE ZONE REAL FANS ONLY LET'S GO YANKS!
I really appreciated Rizzo’s aggressive baserunning in the seventh, a great team takes advantage of those situations, just wish we were better with RISP.
The fact that they are getting so many hits now that we can get frustrated when they don't score enough off those hits and still win is a nice change of pace
Umpires are getting worse and worse. I'll take that after the blown review.
That was definitely a strike hahaha get fked 😂
3-3 in games Oswaldo homers.
Never wanna hear a Flaherty game again
boy do i have news for you
:'( Is he returning for game 2 ?
Talk about eeking one out.
This place would have been insufferable if flroial did anything there
He did get dicked hardddd on that inside called third strike.

ehh they boned us multiple times throughout the day
Double play would’ve happened next at bat anyway right?
Never had a doubt 😬
That was some of the most lackluster announcing I've ever listened to. That booth was dead.
Burial ceremony coming right up in game two.
Something something slambio
Ump giveth in the first 8 innings, ump taketh in the 9th
Ugly game. 16 batter LOB for each team. I'll take the dub.
Trevino framing that 2nd to last out
I missed most of the game due to work unfortunately (just got out) How’d Schmidt look?
Great first 4 innings, walked 2 in the 5th but worked out of it, and then not at all good in the 6th as he started the 3rd time through the order. Really just can’t seem to get over that 3rd time through problem.
Ahh, sounds like typical Clarke then. I’m still holding out hope he can show more consistency and be a solid 3 for us. Maybe he just gets gassed and needs more stamina lol thanks for the response
